Daniel Radcliffe: Anti-Gay Bullying is 'Heartbreaking'

Daniel Radcliffe has spoken out about recent anti-gay bullying situations across the country – and he reminds teens everywhere that help is always available.

“Learning about the suicide deaths of Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh, Asher Walker, Billy Lucas and Justin Aaberg has been heartbreaking for me,” Daniel, a huge supporter of The Trevor Project, shared. “These young people were bullied and tormented by people that should have been their friends.”

“We have a responsibility to be better to each other, and accept each others’ differences regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ability, or religion and stand up for someone when they’re bullied,” Daniel added. “When a friend is feeling depressed or says they’re thinking of killing themselves, we must take it seriously and get them help.”

Help is always available for teens in crisis. Visit TrevorProject.org for more information.

What a nice guy,, good for him…

I am sure Dan is sincere. Sadly enough, if he gets too involved in gay causes, it could hurt his career and I am sure that holds him back to some degree. Could he risk having a number of public gay friends to show his support, or would that create doubts about him too? Difficult situation.

Who Cares? Really? Why are gays the new protected class of persons on this earth? Why not fat people? Fat people invariably take much more abuse than anyone else, including gays, during high school.

People are dicks, there’s no way of getting around that.

@Jim There have been a number of celebrities speaking out against anti-gay bullying over the previous weeks. Someone’s got to speak up, and try to get these kids helps before any more horrible deaths happen.
I think it’s fantastic that there are straight men and women showing support. It may give some hope that there are people out there that don’t care if you gay, straight or a little of both.

bullying is NOT just a gay issue… but only counts when it happens to a gay person, right? MTV has been trying to address this topic with shows like “If you only knew me…” which has been very successful in showing that young people to accept each others differences and that most of us are in the same place.
BTW, The gay community has some of the meanest bullies out there (i.e. Perez, Dlisted, most gossip sites, etc.) so maybe they should clean house first before they expect the world to change instantly.

@jim

this is not just a gay issue; it is a human issue. no one has the right to target another person because he or she is gay/lesbian. it’s not just. you worry that daniel’s statements would make him out to be gay?? please think a moment. did the active support white people, like my mom, gave to the civil rights movement make them black? no, anymore than the support that daniel and others have given to this cause makes them gay/lesbian.

@Who Cares: every one that faces racism should be protected .its ridiculous to say those must be protected more than the others gay and bisexual people fat people disabled people etc .all need to be accepted but i get that the issue about fat people is even more controversial as when an action to support them happens eg beth ditto walking the gaultier catwalk everyone complains that they promote unhealthy lifestyles as if anyone said come become like them

TOLERANCE………………. NO MATTER WHAT OR WHO YOU ARE…….

I completely agree with everything he said. Bullying is wrong. Everyone deserves respect regardless of their race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, or any other part of their being.

You miss the point entirely.
Anyone with a shred of decency cares about treating others with respect.
The issue is bullying, and all bullying is reprehensible.
As was your response ~ you are quite possibly a bully.

@sarafina56: Does that INCLUDE ZOOS???

Dalek de Skaro @ 07/01/2011 at 11:29 am

@Celia: So Zoos are ok too then? Great, we need more support!
