Brad Pitt to Play Mob Enforcer in ‘Cogan’s Trade’
    November 2

Brad Pitt is reteaming with Andrew Dominik, his director of The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, for a comedic crime story titled Cogan’s Trade.

The project, being financed by Inferno, is being unveiled at the American Film Market.

Trade centers on Jackie Cogan, a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high stakes poker game under protection of the mob.

Sources say Dominik is seeking to reunite some of his Jesse James actors for the ensemble movie, with names such as Sam Rockwell and Casey Affleck mentioned as among those that may join Pitt. Also on the list are Mark Ruffalo and Javier Bardem.

Producers on the film include Pitt and Dede Gardner from Plan B and Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz from Chockstone. Inferno’s Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel will exec produce along with Marc Butan.

CAA, which reps, Dominik, Pitt and his Plan B banner, brokered the deal between Plan B, Chockstone and Inferno and will handle domestic rights.

Inferno is prepping The Grey, with Joe Carnahan directing and Liam Neeson in final negotiations to star and in post-production on the action/thriller The Killer Elite, starring Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro.

Brad Pitt Back With ‘Jesse James’ Shooter Andrew Dominik For ‘Cogan’s Trade’

The picture is being produced by Plan B’s Pitt and Dede Gardner and Chockstone’s Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz. Inferno’s Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel will be exec producers with Marc Butan, and Roger Schwartz is co-producer. CAA packaged it. The agency reps Dominik as well as Pitt, who’s managed by Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

The film quickly becomes one of the hot titles at AFM. When Pitt plans to make the movie isn’t clear yet. The actor, who has two pictures in the can — Moneyball and Tree of Life — hasn’t landed on his next project. I’ve heard there’s interest on a New Regency adaptation of the Mark Greaney novel The Gray Man, a drama about a CIA operative-turned-hired-killer, is targeted for death by a team assigned to rescue him. A chase leads them across Europe and leads him to a daughter he didn’t know he had. The script is by Adam Cozad and numerous directors are circling the project.

Brad Pitt and his ‘Jesse James’ director pull a Vegas hustle in ‘Cogan’s Trade’

Published on Tuesday, Nov 2, 2010 10:45 PM Drew McWeeny

If you were to take a poll purely of film critics and not the general moviegoing public, I think you’d find that “The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford” is considered one of the most unjustly overlooked films of the last decade. I know I tried to impart to my readers an urgency in regards to seeing the film on the bigscreen, and if I was the sort of person who got crazy about awards at the end of the year, I would have spent most of that year’s award season sputtering and spitting about the film’s mistreatment.

I think history will eventually hold the film in high regard, and part of the reason for that is the incredible ensemble of actors that director Andrew Dominik put together. Casey Affleck did some of the best work of that year in his role as Robert Ford, and Brad Pitt did career best work in the lead. Sam Rockwell, Garrett Dillahunt… these are some of the best guys working now, and Dominik not only put that great cast together, he also knew what to do with them.

Now word comes that Dominik and Brad Pitt are going to reunite in what sounds like a comic heist picture. “Cogan’s Trade” is described as the story of “Jackie Cogan, a professional [enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high stakes poker game under protection of the mob.” And in addition to Pitt, there is a chance Dominik will be using Rockwell and Affleck, which would be tremendous news. If he adds Mark Ruffalo and Javier Bardem to the mix, that sounds too good to be true.

Keep in mind the American Film Market is in progress in Los Angeles right now, which means you’ll be reading a lot of casting news and word of exciting new projects, and it’ll seem in the next ten days or so like every one of these projects you read about is happening, absolutely, set-in-stone, no-chance-anything-goes-wrong. That’s not the case, of course. Much of what the AFM does is hypothetical, in which rights packages are sold and unmade movies are described in the most glowing possible terms.

I like hearing that “Cogan’s Trade” is meant to be at least somewhat funny. As much as I love Dominik’s last film, making a slow and elegiac film about the death of the Old West and the impermanence of legend is hardly the way to set the box-office on fire. Dominik’s early film “Chopper” is hardly a comedy, but there’s a macho bluster to it that is funny at times, and I think there’s a chance Dominik is one of those guys like David Gordon Green, who starts with films in one vein, but who is able to easily switch genre and style because of his skills. He seems enormously gifted, and I hope we’re just at the start of his career, and that he’s got a lot more to show us.

We’ll have more on “Cogan’s Trade” when and if it develops.

    Brad Pitt Finds Cogan’s Trade
A new film with director Andrew Domink

The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford might not have earned a lot of loot at the box office, but A) it was bloody good and B) Brad Pitt and director Andrew Dominik clearly enjoyed the collaboration, as they’re fixing to team back up again for something with just as much crime but a few more laughs: Cogan’s Trade.

Dominik has apparently adapted George V Higgins’ novel, which finds skilled mob enforcer Cogan (Pitt) called in to investigate when a Mafia-run poker game is robbed. It doesn’t sound high-larious, but then it’s probably shooting (pun intended) for more of a black comic tone.

While Pitt is already on board with the idea, there’s also word that fellow Jesse James cast members Casey Affleck and Sam Rockwell might be tempted back to take part. And according to the Heat Vision blog, Javier Bardem and Mark Ruffalo are also on Domink’s wish list.

Higgins’ story takes place in Boston, though Casey Affleck commented recently that the film version likely wouldn’t be set there. Still, we’re interested to see what Pitt and Dominik would do with an urban crime setting.

    Pitt Plying Cogan’s Trade
Jesse James helmer, actors may reunite for crime flick.
    November 2, 2010
    by Jim Vejvoda

Please see an important update below. Casey Affleck, who starred in the critically acclaimed Boston crime drama adaptation Gone Baby Gone, may reunite with director Andrew Dominik for another Beantown crime lit adaptation.

The Playlist claims Affleck and Dominik, who made The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford together, will reportedly team for the heist comedy Cogan’s Trade, an adaptation of George V. Higgins’ 1974 novel of the same name. Publishers Marketplace reported yesterday that Dominik had optioned the book, which follows the eponymous Boston underworld enforcer who is out to determine who ripped off a mob-controlled high-stakes card game.

Affleck first mentioned the possibility of reuniting with Dominik last month. He told The Kevin and Josh Movie Show in Washington DC: “In January, I’m going to be doing a movie with Andrew Dominik again. … I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about it but it’s a Boston-based crime — it’s a novel that was set in Boston that’s not going to be set in Boston unfortunately. But it’s a novel that was set in Boston, it’s a great novel and his got a great take on it. There’s a lot of good people in it, it’s going to be a great movie.” Sounds like Cogan’s Trade to us.

UPDATE: Deadline reports that Brad Pitt, who played the title role in Jesse James, will play the title role in Cogan’s Trade as well, with Casey Affleck said to be up for another role in it. Pitt will also produce the film via his Plan B shingle, along with Inferno Entertainment. In addition to starring together in Jesse James, Pitt and Affleck also appeared together in the Ocean’s films.

The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford was an amazing film. Truly sorry it never made it big in theatres. IIRC, it was shown in very few venues, and just wondering if any of the regulars who know the history behind it could tell me. I have a bit of a soft spot for that film, since it was partially shot in my province of Alberta. As much as I am a fan of Brads for his good looks, devotion and humanitarian endeavors, his acting is really what does it for me. When he portrays a character, I forget that he is Brad Pitt, and that signifies great acting to me. Casey Affleck is the same (I was creeped out by his portrayal of Robert Ford). Teaming them up together is a surefire winner, but then you add Javier Bardem and Sam Rockwell to the mix? Sounds incredible. The only way they could make it any better is if they put John Malkovich in the cast (amazing actor, that guy). I could die happy right there in the theatre!

MERYL STREEP IN LISA KUDROW’S WEB SHOW
    .
By Nellie Andreeva November 2, 2010
    .
EXCLUSIVE: It seems like the great Meryl Streep is heading to the Web with a stint on Lisa Kudrow’s popular Internet series Web Therapy.
    .
I hear that the Oscar-winning actress quietly shot a three-episode arc on the series’ upcoming batch of fresh episodes, which LStudio is expected to launch soon. Details about her character are sketchy but word is she is playing a counselor.
    .
Streep has been in such great demand in features (she recently signed to do Michael Patrick King’s new comedy at Universal) that she rarely does anything else, with the exception of an occasional prestige longform TV project such as HBO’s Angels in America.
    .
The Webby-winning improv comedy series Web Therapy, created by Kudrow, her producing partner Dan Bucatinsky and writer-director Don Roos, stars Kudrow as Fiona Wallice, a therapist of unspecified credentials. In April, Showtime picked up the produced webisodes of Web Therapy to air as a half-hour series on the pay cable network.

One of the guests was a shrink and that’s basically what she said. There was also a woman there freom Peeps and she was saying that thing was Charlie Sheen is that all of his off-stage drama doesn’t affect his work and that’s probably part of why he gets away with it. She also said that he’s making CBS so much money that they’re not going to do anything to jeopardize their cash cow. Since she was from Peeps she was much politer in the way she worded it, but that’s what she meant. She said that today when Sheen showed up at CBS Studios everybody was glad to see him, there were hugs all around, lots of back slapping – nobody said anything about his meltdown in NYC and nobody asked him about his divorce. It was business as usual and he was there to work. She also said that was thing with Charlie – CBS didn’t have any problems with his work ethic. He shows up on time, he knows his lines, he’s friendly with the cast and crew and gets along with everybody. There’s no drama on the set. There’s work Charlie – and the stuff he gets into off the soundstage isn’t their business or their problem. The shrink was saying that’s how a lot of addicts function – they compartmentalize their lives and never the twain shall meet…until it’s too late and that’s probably what would happen with Charlie, too. He’s got his work in compartment, his kids in another and his drugs and drinking in another and one day the drinking & drugs would put the kids in jeopardy and that’s when something will finally get done or that’s when he’ll finally go to far or OD. The other thing the Peeps lady mentioned was that they talked to several of Charlie’s ex-wives and girlfriends and almost all of them said they think that deep down inside he wants to be a good guy, but he struggles with keeping promises. And she said they all said the same thing – he’d be fine and they wished him well, no hard feelings. Someone else pointed out – the lawyer chick, IIRC – that what it all comes down to for everyone turning a blind eye (CBS) and making excuses (the exes) that it’s all about the money. Charlie makes a buttload of money for CBS and that money in turns buys these women the lifestyles they want and they wouldn’t have without Charlies alimony and child support. It was pretty comical because basically what they’re saying is that if these greedy hos had pressed charges instead of taking a pay-off Charlie would be in jail for the numerous assault comoplaints – and they’d all have to get a j-o-b like the rest of us. Like Kanye said…now I ain’t sayin’ she’s a golddigger…

On Cogans Trade: anything Brad Pitt or his production company Plan B is involved in generates excitement. Brad’s movies be it the ones he acts in or the ones he produces and known for its quality.
    .
I think over time he and Plan B has built up a reputation of producing good movies. I checked rotten tomatoes and of the 11 films that Plan B produced, 8 scored above 70%. Troy scored 55%. Only Eat Pray Love and the Time Traveller’s Wife scored less than 40%.
    .
Troy, Charlie, the Departed, The time Traveler’s wife, Kick Ass, and EPL all made significantly more than 2 times production budget in the Box Office. And we know that Kick Ass and a few others cleaned up in the DVD sales.
    .
People go and see a Plan B movie or a Brad Pitt movie or an Angelina Jolie movie because they expect to get a certain quality and the movies deliver that quality.
    .
It’s like how Jodie Foster played it. Quality movies. One a year and that’s just plenty.

    Megamind = Megafunny
While I generally concentrate on music, I had a chance to see the new Dreamworks/Paramount animated family film Megamind last weekend and wanted to report in on it. The movie was mega-clever, mega-fun and mega-entertaining.
The terrific team of comic actors (Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and, don’t forget, David Cross) wonderfully handles all of funny things to do and say – which isn’t always the case on film or animated comedies. Brad Pitt also seems to be having a fun time with his heroic role.
It’s one of those animated films that offer plenty of laughs for young and old alike. Parents will be having just as much fun as their kids.
