Kanye West: Matt Lauer Tried to Force My Answers

Kanye West has sounded off about his recent experience on Today.

The 33-year-old rapper dropped by Today and apologized for his infamous outburst during a Hurricane Katrina telethon.

Here’s what Kanye had to say on his Twitter:

“I went up there to express how I was empathetic to Bush because I labeled him a racist and years later I got labeled as a racist….While I was trying to give the interview they started playing the ‘MTV’ under me with audio!!!!!!!

“I don’t mess with Matt Lauer or the Today Show … and that’s a very nice way for me to put it! HE TRIED TO FORCE MY ANSWERS. IT WAS VERY BRUTAL AND I CAME THERE WITH ONLY POSITIVE INTENT. I feel very alone very used very tortured very forced very misunderstood very hollow very very misused. I don’t trust anyone but myself! Everyone has an agenda. I don’t do press anymore. I can’t be everything to everybody anymore.”

Read the rest of Kanye‘s reaction inside…

“I can’t be everybody’s hero and villain savior and sinner Christian and anti Christ! I can’t take anymore advice!!! I create, I’m creative, I have a good heart, everyone will see and understand one day. Everything sounds like noise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVERYTHING SOUNDS LIKE NOISE!!!!!!! I don’t trust anyone! Very judged very scrutinized very criticized! I want everyone to know I have lows all the time but I make it through them!

“Yo I really wonder if Matt Lauer thought that s— was cool to play the ‘MTV’ clip while I was speaking about Bush? He played clips of Bush and asked me to look at his face while I was trying to talk to him. I wish Michael Jackson had twitter!!!!!!

“Maybe Mike could have explained how the media tried to set him up!!! It’s all a f—ing set up!!!!”

What about pushing that nice little white girl off the stage after SHE won the award? What goes around comes around, huh Kanye?

  • LastWord

People try to hold Kanye to today’s standards of a entertainer. Most don’t understand he is a throwback Rock Star, say what he wants does what he wants f what anybody thinks. Like “Scarface ” said you need people like Kanye West so you can point your fingers and say thats the bad guy.

  • G-Girl

Oh goodness this guy as talented as he is he freaking whines about everything. Doesn’t he know when to shut up? Constantly going on comparing himself to Michael Jackson, Mandella! Did those guys compare themselves (publicly) to legends? Come on. Kanye… let others compare you to greats. Don’t do it yourself. It may come off a tad arrogant. We also don’t need to hear you rant and rave about how hard it was to do your videos. Let others boast about you my friend. When you make the video and then say how amazing it is, it takes away from the great video. Let others compliment your body of work. Goodness, humble yourself, if even for a moment. You are heading into a dangerous place. You are isolating yourself. You went away to clear you mind and now your mucking it up again. Oy!

  • Crittle

Maybe he’s not fully recovered from his ‘breakdown’ or whatever it was. Really, he just needs to shut up for like 5 years.

  • ICU

WOW! No wonder our world is the way that it is… no more forgiving people left. We have all done things and said things that we wish we would have never, ever done or said. He has asked for forgiveness and has now been treated the way that he treated others. He sounds as if he has learned from it and wants to, and is trying to change. We all have needed a break or maybe even need a break now. Spread the LOVE people, NOT HATE! Love creates more love:) Hate creates more hate:(

He can’t leave shit alone. Stopping one problem then creating another just makes him look like more of a jackass. When the president calls you a Jackass, enough said.

  • cat,

Likt they said…..what goes around does comes around…and its not fun when it does!!!!..thats how the universe works….anything you do or say…..it’ll come back to you….the stronger intent and its stronger impact!!!!

  • Linda

This dude needs to ‘really’ go away….what a f%@*%en nut job….really. “I’m gonna check with my business manager to see how much we can give”………….REALLY…!!.. You got nothing in common with the victims of Hurricane Katrina…nothing…..they think you are a JOKE like the rest of us…never did hear just how much you gave! Still waiting to hear back from your ‘business manager’.. Such a dumb ass………….

  • Linda

Dude…he KEEPS saying stupid shit…. everytime he opens his mouth or twitter page… he needs to carry around a recording device…maybe those jaw muscles will think twice… he is OUT OF TOUCH… HE SPEAKS FROM SOMEWHERE…FAR…FAR… AWAY… PLANET NO CLUE MAYBE….?

  • Bellas

I hate to love Kanye, but I do.

  • v

Wah Wah Wah… god what a big freakin BABY! It’s no wonder no takes him seriously, look at the shit he writes!

  • Jokergurl

Kanye putting his foot in his mouth again and tripping over his ego, what’s new. You NEVER hear 50 CENT whine! Sheesh! I remember the telethon when he said it and it just was totally inappropriate, it took away from the victims of Hurricane Katrina and got Kanye a LOT of publicity. He’s got a bad case of the histrionics.

  • collegenurse

Kayne has no problem blurting out his reactions…but as soon as someone calls him on it he gets all jammed up….hide behind tweeting Kayne…man up and while your at it go for counseling regarding your anger issues.

  • Seriously

This guy need to pull his little girl panties out of his crack and shut the hell up. Good Lord, he whines more than my four year olds.

  • webhybrid

If this guy has any talent whatsoever, I have yet to discern it. Ego… well, that’s another story.

Just for the sake of full disclosure: Taylor ‘One Note’ Swift has no talent either, except for self promotion. Can’t sing at all, really. Not even the single note she attempts.

As a Ph.d. in Media Communications, I would have to agree with Kanye in this situation. The Today Show interview was given a negative tone in its entirety. Matt Lauer did not once embrace Kanye as a neutral guest trying to field questions but rather chose to push for certain negative reactions.
Check the research, in most interviews you can see Lauer, or any of the Morning network’s interviewers, typically create an upbeat and positive tone by nodding their head and not making the interviewee seem like a defendant. It is all in how you present the interview and ask the questions.
As an interviewer, your interviewee is at your mercy of how you present the issue, especially in front of a nationally televised audience. Producers of live shows typically give the interviewer a well prepped outline with his/her questions while the interviewee is given a rough outline of what will be asked and what they intend to convey. Even during the scene where Kanye abruptly exclaims his discomfort with the notorious film clip of he and Taylor Swift being shown, Lauer could have easily diffused the situation by commanding the audio/video personnel to stop the video and allow Kanye to speak with an open mind. Instead he chose to ask the audio engineer to “ok can you take the sound out of the overheads, please?” “please pick up…” A blatant lack of disrespect to West, Matt Lauer should have apologized to his guest like it were Mr. George Bush, or anyone else fot that matter, sitting in the seat and had a similar opinion of the disruption.
Further, Lauer goes on to justify his interview through his actions and wording of his follow-up commentary which explains the situation to all of the viewers, as if the viewers need a tailored explanation given to them. That follow up piece right there shows you exactly what you need to see. Lauer was not conveying anything but doubt and a guilty conscienced uncertainty about his actions during that interview. You can easily see this by his willingness to raise his hands and wonder “what?” and ask co-host Meridith Viera for reaffirmation, to which she gladly provides, “ok.. not much [hub-bub].” The follow up piece should have provided West with an explanation and an apology for taking his very serious piece and turning it into a control-driven masquerade. Instead Lauer, Veira, and the rest of the Today Show’s Producer’s decided it be best to stand for their position and claim they were right when they were wrong, and conveniently adding that George Bush appreciated West’s apology……. at a time when that was not relevant to anything in their dialogue.
I am very saddened by the bias of Matt Lauer and the Today Show as a whole. As an Asian-American, I always knew they were targeted to Caucasians in the U.S. [filling minority the spots by the very Cauasian-Traited Al Roker and Ann Curry], but this blatant and unfortunate attempt to bury an artist at their lowest point is absurd.
