Cate Blanchett Joins 'The Hobbit' Cast!

Cate Blanchett will reprise her role of Galadriel from The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the upcoming adaptation of the trilogy’s prequel, The Hobbit.

The film will be split into two parts that will be filmed back-to-back starting this February, according to Variety.

Director Peter Jackson commented on Cate‘s casting, saying “[she] is one of my favorite actors to work with and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK about Cate Blanchett reprising her role?

    Interesting, but not unexpected I agree. Kate Blanchett did the role very well, but we now have a further clue about deviation of the screenplay from the book. Galadriel is only talked about indirectly in “The Hobbit” and only referred to by name only, I think, in the fellowship trilogy in reference to events taking place during the time of the Hobbit. Perhaps development of the story and scenes involving Galadriel as leader of the “White Council” using her “magical” prowess to help banish the necromancer (actually Sauron) from his hideout in Mirkwood forest are in store. Could be very cool to see as part of the movie and I could see why Peter Jackson would want to use this very interesting character from Middle Earth more!!!

    Kate Blanket and the old photo !
    Pete lost some weight, I assume this is from an LOTR party.

    So now in essence we do have confirmation that that PJ will in fact “invent” a part of the text that JRR never wrote. Ahh … poor Tolkien, he’s spinning in his grave. And yes, you can thumb it down as much as you want but the man left specific instructions about his work, especially in the case of making a movie. But well, honouring the wishes of a writer who has left us such an incredible legacy should not stop big business making money right? This is one movie I won’t be seeing. It won’t do any good in the grand scheme of things but at least some people will respect the great man and writer that JRRT was.

    Well, I am glad to see this is finally taking shape. I don’t think I can handle another delay.

  • Great news

    Can’t wait both for this one AND the ‘prequel’ he’s promised fans to the LOTR trilogy. Personally I’m so happy he’s back at the helm.

    Umm Galadriel isn’t IN the Hobbit. Her role in LOTR was fantastic and I love her work, but if they’re going to add extraneous stuff to a perfectly good story I, for one, will be very disappointed. The book is nice and short and can fit in one good movie if they don’t overdo it.

  • Trin

    Great news. I love Cate and I love her performance like Galadriel. Cate is the best.

    @Iffy Miffy:

    Oh come now. I’m sure peter will base it on the banishment of sauron, and stay true to LOR lore. Kate is intoxicating on-screen, so I’m thrilled she will be in The Hobbit movie.

    Why such a negative attitude? Unwarranted. Let the movie be and watch it for what it is when it is released, and then pass jusdgement.

    @Iffy Miffy: this comment must be some sort of joke or you clearly have very little understanding of the Hobbit and its ties with the LOTR and the following Silmarillion. Although Galadriel does not directly take part in the events of the Hobbit, Peter Jackson is not “inventing new text”. The Hobbit was written long before Tolkien had any understanding of where the story of the Lord of the Rings would head, so later Tolkien wrote Galdriel (and many many other characters) stories back through the Hobbit. Galdriel quite often spent time in Imladris (Rivendell) and seeing as Elrond married her daughter she quite often came to visit her grandsons and grand-daughter Arwen. Also as a member of the white council (which consisted of the Istari and other wise beings of middle earth) she helped forge the movement against the necromancer Sauron in Mirkwood) which as was later revealed in Tolkien’s writings is the reason Gandalf rides off and leaves the expedition to traverse Mirkwood alone. Jackson has the liberty of two movies here, which he has most certainly earned the right to having produced on of the three greatest trilogies of all time, so there is the wonderful chance for him to elaborate and intertwine many other stories back through the Hobbit. Just because we see Galdriel in the trailer does not mean he is just making things up.
