Rape as an instrument of war is pretty bad. Being forced to have sex with multitudes over the entire period of captivity is brutal. Being informed that the bowl of soup you have hungrily eaten was one of your co-captives who failed to sexually perform satisfactorily, is incomprehensible cruelty.

That is why that history remains such a unforgettable nightmare to the Chinese, try as they might.

Historian Iris Chang was so haunted by researching and telling that same story, that she is understood to have taken her own young life.

Note: While the relentless haters here might want to label those particular victims with their usual misogynistic epithets, once they see the film, they are advised please do not. If ever there was a hot button issue among the Chinese, it is that.

This is a surprise because of the subject matter a bold project, Christian Bale is great actor. Such a devastating history though, the rape of Nanjing. The Japanese were the most brutal in WWII, which is not to say that Stalin and Hitler, Mussolini were not brutal but the Japanese were the only people reported to resort to cannibalism, and beheadings of their prisoners. Look this up if you don’t believe me. The Japanese history books do not even acknowledge Pearl Harbor either.
