Garrett Hedlund: 'Country Strong' Opens Today!

Garrett Hedlund grins as he arrives at a screening of his new movie, Country Strong, at AMC Village 7 on Thursday (January 6) in New York City.

The 26-year-old actor plays a songwriter named Beau Hutton in the film, which also stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Leighton Meester!

“I mean, country, it was the only thing we listened to on the farm with the one radio station,” Garrett told MTV News. “You try to veer from it and you to go to rock and then to rap, and then country on this film kind of pulled me back home.”

  • r.

So glad he and the cast are at least getting good reviews for their performances and musical talents. And the regular, unpretentious people I’ve seen it with love the film.

  • Ba

    He’s beautiful.

  • Lola*

I cant wait to see it, also mostly for garret and leighton. However he does not look too hot in this photocall. Cmon Garret, step it up! You can do better than this!

  • panda

Going tonight to watch Garrett and Leighton on the big screen!!!

  • nina

hmmm….definetely noot looking pretty in this pics

  • jenny

@r.: huh??? The cast are getting great reviews? I think you have a reading comprehension probem! Most of the reviews say that Gwyneth was totally miscast, Tim should at least sing cause he’s the only one who can do it, Leighton..well they’re a bit biased&Hedlund’s character has been described as “looking like he’s on drugs”. If you don’t believe me, check out Rotten Tomates, they have all the reviews; right now it’s at 16% rotten. I can understand when people are fans of one actor or the other&want to concentrate on the good things, but come on, don’t make up BS, when the reviews are out there for every1 to see!

  • marie

    @jenny: you’re brave…! You’re gonna be crusified now!

  • ..

The cast did get good reviews. They said that’s what saves the movie if anything. I know how to read and I read the reviews right. Thank you very much.

  • mel

@jenny: Stop the BS…critics are complaining about the script not about the actors, you should take another look at the reviews because they acknowledge the acting, performances, and the music as being the movies strength

  • Flo

Psht reviews! He’s hot, and his voice is amazing,

  • T

These are just some comments from different critics….mostly about Leighton and Garrett

Garrett Hedlund (who made this film immediately after getting digital for TRON: Legacy) and Leighton Meester (who dabbles in singing) are photogenic and convincing (if not Oscar material) as singers and actors.

Also, both Hedlund and Meester gave terrific performances and have great chemistry, especially when performing together on stage giving a country music skeptic like myself the impression that country music can be somewhat sexy. I do caution that it is an intense drama despite the film’s marketing which depicts a knee-slapping, toe-tapping good time.

You could tell that Gwyneth Paltrow as Kelly was in pain, and Leighton Meester as the innocent and bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed Chiles was consistent and entertaining.

Coming off a somewhat mediocre performance in “Tron: Legacy”, Hedlund delivers the exact opposite in “Country Strong.” He is a scene stealer and this film will serve as a turning point in his career, pushing him into the caliber of leading man.

Despite the obvious flaws, the actors manage to inject believability into their characters, allowing them to be raw and less than perfect. That vulnerability, coupled with fresh music and enthusiastic, heartfelt acting and vocal performances all round, make “Country Strong” worth tuning into.

I am definitely watching this movie for these two

  • Susan

He has pretty eyes. Like him clean-shaven more though.

  • Unwatchable

GP is a total miscast. This movie is so cheesy and weak. I think you’ll have to be drinking yourself to make it through it. “Ordinary” people are not dumb. This movie will definitely be a big flop.

  • miumiu

i am watching this for leighton and garrett!

  • irene olson

When will Tim McGraw and Hollywood realize he cannot act. I would bet Garrett and Leighton are the best actors. Tim and Gwyneth lack in the talent department. McGraw better stick with singing. Best of luck to Garrett.

  • nikki

no matter how you spin it, the reviews are bad! 74% of the critics think the movie is a waste of money; when they say stuff like the actors are not as terrible as the rest of the movie, that is NOT praise people. Come. On.

  • Sophia

    @Ash:
Me too! They look really great together.

  • nora

Yeah, so great reviews for the cast!!!
“The relationship between Beau and Chiles contains no chemistry”
“Hedlund was okay as the scrappy kid in Tron: Legacy, but he’s hopeless at anything requiring greater nuance. His constant smirk makes him look perpetually stoned”
“Hedlund doesn’t help much. He’s attractive in a scraggly, hunched-over kind of way, however he can’t act. It looks like he’s trying too hard to come off like a 2011 country version of James Dean, and trust me, it doesn’t work”
    “Meester is flat-out awful”
“The performances – not just of Paltrow but also (even especially) Hedlund and Meester – create a viewing experience in which several great country music videos are contained within a sappy and hoot-filled feature-length movie”
“Hedlund and Meester aren’t complex or interesting enough to carry so much of the movie”

    etc, etc, etc, etc, etc…….

  • GG

That is BS! Garrett is getting a lot of praise for this movie. Judging by the clips I’ve seen, him and Leighton have chemistry.

  • http://T.com Kaz simply smashing !!!!!!!

    I don’t care wried

  • Helen

    The movie’s so bad

  • http://hedlundfrance.net/ moio

    @nora:

It’s easy to put only the bad reviews, here are good for balance and show that you’re in bad times.

    - And the lead quartet is perfectly competent, with flashes of brilliance, most notably in Garrett Hedlund’s performance. He’s a relative newcomer to the silver screen, and I wasn’t blown away by his performance in “Tron: Legacy,” but he was a perfect actor to play thoughtful, lovelorn Beau. He looks at home in tight jeans and a dirty cowboy hat, with a guitar in his hands. And that voice! Gwyneth Paltrow may be getting some notice for her singing, but I’d be much happier to hear Hedlund singing on my radio, and I’m not even a huge country music fan.

    - Audiences will enter “Country Strong” bracing for a powerhouse performance by Paltrow. They’ll leave eager to see what else Hedlund can do on the big screen.

    - I really did love the performances in the film. Particularly Garrett Hedlund who I was not really impressed with during TRON: Legacy. Tim McGraw and Gwyneth Paltrow both do a great job in portraying the varying emotions so that the audience can real be with them on their rollercoaster. Leighton Meester is even great as “the next Carrie Underwood”. While her performance is the least impressive of the four, she is still very good.

I was also surprised at the singing in the film. Meester, Hedlund, and Paltrow all did their own singing and I was really shocked at how good they were. I knew Paltrow could due to her guest stint in Glee, and I had read about Meester signing a recording contract. But Hedlund really shocked me at how good he really was.

    - Garrett Hedlund could give Brad Paisley a run for his money and especially shines on Timing Is Everything

    - Speaking of Garrett Hedlund, I had no idea he had such a good singing voice. His deep talking voice already had melting, now that I know he could serenade me, I’m seriously considering stalking this guy. He’s such a versatile actor. Just watch him in “Tron” and you’ll see that character and the one here couldn’t be any different, but he sells them both quite well. Garrett wasn’t the only thing I enjoyed. Leighton’s character Chiles Stanton and her pop-country sensibility were as charming as apple pie. When Garrett and Leighton were on the screen, the chemistry they displayed was infectious and adorable. I could’ve watched two hours of that.

    - But the stage ultimately belongs to Hedlund. The 26-year-old, who dunked a toe into his leading man potential in “TRON: Legacy,” emerges from “Country Strong” a full-blown heartthrob, equal parts Brad Pitt’s rascally “Thelma and Louise” drifter and Kris Kristofferson circa 1976.

    - Hedlund shows vulnerability and charm, and there are times when he seems like a young Heath Ledger.

    - I surprised myself by being impressed more by Hedlund than any of the film’s other actors. His blue eyes and natural smile give his stage presence an undeniable magnetism, and he turns out to have a fantastic gravelly singing voice. Hell, I’d go out and buy his album, if he had one. (Meester and Paltrow: not so much.) His laid-back countrified persona in this film is in remarkable contrast to the high-intensity performance he turned in in Tron: Legacy. Under the brim of his stained Stetson and behind chin whiskers, he’s hardly recognizable as the guy who co-starred with Jeff Bridges in that one.

    etc, etc, etc, etc, etc…….

  • Tiptoes

He has a nice voice ~ I like Garrett!

  • Tiptoes

I really admire the way he prepared for this role (it took him 6 months). And to think he didn’t know how to sing country music and play the guitar before.

He is going to go a long way!

  • sheri

    brillant film…. great story!!
