Glee's Ryan Murphy Lashes Out at Kings of Leon
Glee stars Chris Colfer, Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch join creator Ryan Murphy and 20th Century Fox Television chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter‘s current issue, on newsstands Thursday.
Ryan chatted about the business side of the hit show and dished on why fans will never hear songs from certain artists.
Here’s what he had to share with the mag:
On Eminem: “We went after ‘Lose Yourself,’ and it was jaw droppingly expensive. Around $200,000. We couldn’t
do it because the episode would’ve been so over budget.”
On Kings of Leon, who famously rejected Glee: “F— you, Kings of Leon. They’re self-centered a–holes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It’s like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.”
(FYI: KOL released this statement to THR: “This whole Glee thing is a shock to us. It’s gotten out of hand. At the time of the request, we hadn’t even see the show. It came at the end of that record cycle, and we were over promoting ['Use Somebody']. This was never meant as a slap in the face to Glee or to music education or to fans of the show. We’re not sure where the anger is coming from.”)
Ryan also shared he’s trying to write in Jennifer Lopez and Stevie Nicks for some future episodes!

Way out of line. Tsk.
Agreed. Ryan Murphy needs to cool it. Artists should have the right to say who they want to lend their music to and not. It’s not like Glee hasn’t already been able to use so many other songs! Just move without making such rude statements.
Ryan Murphy is starting to believe his own hype! Kings of Leon have the right to do what they want with their songs; it their lyrics, their music. Some people just don’t want their hard work bastardized.
It’s bad form that he’s now trying to shame/embrass Kings of Leon in public.
KOL not wanting their song used isn’t “hating on arts education”. Ryan Murphy sounds like the self centred a–hole.
not necessary
Yup. Ryan Murphy sounds like he can make or break an artist… Umm, no? And a 7-year old watching Glee? Isn’t that way too young to be watching about teen pregnancy and bullying?
Oh no….is that true….???
srsly Murphy? when artostsd don’t wanna go to yur shoe they’re assh_les?I can’t wait for Glee to cool off&f_ck off!
Stupid man ! Who is the self sentered a. hole here ??
They are artists you morron !!
An artist is not a prostitute, they can do whatever they want with their art.
I , just heard about Glee like everyday, without seeing it.
Now you’re sure I don’t even want to try to see it !
Here’s what you just did !
Try to say the same thing to Slash who thinks even worst things about Glee, just try if you’re a man !
So stupid, he can’t even imagine that maybe the Kings Of Leon are not running after albums sellings, particulary with little kids.
F.U.C.K Y.O.U too !
…I don’t know…it depends on what they said at the beginning(how they declined the request)…but Ryan shouldn’t have said that anyways.
make a spice girls special!!!
Forget the fact that 7year olds shouldn’t even be watch that over hyped trash now refusing the “Great” Ryan Murphy means you hate children and the arts? I’m not even a fan of KOL but good for them for saying no to that egomaniac. Murphy better watch cause Glee isn’t always gonna have the medias pushing it as the”hottest hit show” just look at Ugly Betty,The O.C., and Gossip Girl.
Oh no…is that true….??
Get over yourself, this just makes you and Glee look bad.
idiot. they said no, they have every right to. Ryan murphy is an idiot.
By the way, I give him a week before he apologizes like a coward !
They want try to scream
I was kinda surprised by Ryan’s statement, but I do remember KOL downplayed Glee when they refused to giveout their music.
Glee takes some great songs and re-introduces them to a younger generation that needs good music to believe in, rather than go after Bieber and Miley trash. It would have done no-one any harm to have had some awesome KOL songs on Glee– instead, it would’ve made their songs popular amongst a younger generation that relates to Glee so well.
Oh, and for those thinking Ryan believes his own hype– if you read the whole THR article, you’ll realise he knows as much as anyone else that where there are highs, there are lows, too. He’s just bitter that KOL let down Glee so rudely.
They want to be thriller
Really?!…
Yeah this song thriller nice
Ryan Murphy, this really applies more to you than to anybody else you “self-centered *******, who missed the big picture”.
No ones life revolves around Glee, unlike yours.
Ooops, Ryan Murphy definitely overreacted here.
But we have to admit that KOL weren’t exactly polite themselves when they bashed Glee a few months ago.
Everybody should just take a deep breath and cool off a little before this ego clash hurts somebody.
Both KOL as well as RM are doing a great job respectively, so no need to get too involved or worked up about it as a viewer/fan, no matter which side you’re on.
I’ll just go enjoy both like I did before.
Oh really?!…
Some one here start to freeze
