Stars Glam Up Vanity Fair's Hollywood Issue

Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Anne Hathaway, and James Franco grace the cover of Vanity Fair‘s 17th annual Hollywood Issue.

For the special issue, the magazine “went back to the basics – no teenagers, no penguins, no (full-on) nudity, just the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment.”

The three-panel foldout, which was shot in L.A. and NYC, also features Jennifer Lawrence, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund, Noomi Rapace, and Robert Duvall.

“We wanted to evoke the glamour of 1930s Shanghai, an era of smoky, alluring elegance,” said VF fashion and style director Jessica Diehl. “We had the gentlemen looking dashing in black tie, whilst the ladies were radiant in spring’s gowns – from Gucci to Yves Saint Laurent – and glittering with diamonds from Chanel and other arbiters of glamour.”

TELL ME HATERS. HOW CAN YOU HATE SOMETHING THIS PERFECT.

# 3

Why is Natalie Portman not included in this issue?

# 4

@?: because it would be tacky to show her tummy in those dresses.

# 5

does anyone else notice how vanity fair doesnt have young black actors on the COVER, even for the young upcoming cover with kristen stewart and carrey and now this one hes in the inside

# 7

jake and anne should def hook up!!!! incredible chemistry

# 8

Rashida Jones and Olivia Wilde are unworthy of Vanity Fair’s annual Hollywood issue.

# 9

@dex:

do you really think that`s a big deal? I personally don`t. I didn`t even noticed that.

p.s. can ANYONE tell me is that Kevin Connolly from Entourage on last page next to that brunette girl? Tnx a lot!

i see Hollywood is still trying to make Jake Gyllenhaal happen

@sfingaaa:

yes i do, this happens everytime vanity fair comes out with a issue like this

i agree wtf? @ 02/01/2011 at 3:02 am

@wtf? Isnt it sad when they constantly shove people down your throat you clearly have told them you DO NOT LIKE???

also rashida feeding the baby cheetah milk… that is not creative at all.. its tomfoolery!!!

Cant wait until they put Henry Cavill on the cover!!! That will be worth buying..not this

amazing!!!!!!!

Ryan Gosling should have been on the cover too!

ahh! 2 of my favorite actors on the same cover!!! James Franco and Ryan Reynolds. <3 I love how everyone looks so glam. xD

Garrett <3

People like Jake G. or Kristen Stewart are constantly forced on the audiance despite the public showing over and over again they don’t care about them. But when you have parents who work in Hollywood like they do then you can always appear on cover of such magazines.

JAMES FRANCO <3<3<3<3

Love Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He’s finally getting the recognition he deserves.

the two hottest men in hollywood!! james franco and ryan renolds!! love it!

OMG RYAN, JESSE, AND JOSEPH in the same room?! aren’t we lucky? full of talent!

What’s with the men being completely covered up while they’ve photoshopped all these lovely women into skinny, naked oblivion? Seriously these are near perfect creatures in terms of women, and yet their bodies are unfamiliar here, drawn into cartoonish shapes.

@akanni: oh give me a break, kristen’s dad is a glorified STAGE MANAGER, while her mom reworks scripts. Hardly a high powered couple in hollywood, give it a rest.

UGH, how annoying that once again Vanity Fair treats women like pieces of meat and decorative pieces for the men, just like that Tom Ford-naked Keira/Scarlett cover that Rachel McAdams REFUSED to be a part of cause she didn’t want to be a piece of meat.

@Kaz simply Amaazzing !!!!!!!!:
Learn to speak English first.

Great cover overall, Looks nice having Anne as the solo female on the main cover too. I would have had a few different people in there such as maybe Natalie Portman instead of Rashida. Really glad to see Olivia and Jennifer included though.

@Chris: I simply hate the PsD (photoshop disaster) and how they lengthen people’s figure whose physics we already know! Anne Hathaway’s a LOUD AND CLEAR bodyswap, as she is thin and tall but not in that model-like way. Sorry! not buying it! I’m sick on how they lie to us in our faces and everyone seems to be ok with it!

Ok. I’m very happy for Noomi Rapace. But what Olivia Wilde is doing here? That TV show actress doesn’t belong here. It’s called Oscar Contenders. Some thing that this one note, just pretty face actress will never achieve.

Who the eff is Rashida Jones. Is she the daughter of editor of the magazine or something? It’s called Oscar Contenders and then they put in there chick that I never even heard of. Never.

Why do I have the felling that the only reason they put Anthony Mackie in there is that those people in the comments would not scream “It’s all white cast. They hate black people.” again. And why is Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds on the Oscar cover? James Franco is nominated.
Anne Hathaway is host. Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal don’t have anything with Oscars.

And I’m so glad they didn’t put Justin Timberlake in.

Oh great. I did search for Big Star Rashida Jones. Turns out she is that layer from Social Network. She was there for few scenes. And I always felt that from all the cast she is the only one who was miscast. I didn’t believe her character. She was a little fake.

And it’s still doesn’t explain why they put her in there. I only recognized her when I went to her IMDB. No one knows her and no one cares. After Social Network Oscar run will come to an end we will never hear from this chick again. In 2-3 years people will look at this cover and will ask themselves: “Who is this girl?” An even after they will be told that she was in Social Network – people will still not remember her in there. She doesn’t belong on this photo.

@?
Natalie is not included because she is pregnant and the american people are bunch of fat people who calls other people fat and they don´t like to put chubby people on their magazine, that´s why

see, all ladies are just covering their boobs with a little bit of “dress”

Hollywook young! @ 02/01/2011 at 5:35 am

Looks SO GORGEOUS!!! I’m happy i’m subscribing!

@sola:

That’s why they got her the best PR team in HW, God knows she needs them considering how bad her public image is. Each time she opens her mouth she causes controversy: calling her fans retards, comparing herself to rape victims etc. and being a ***** in general.
On top of that she has zero acting skills.

@? imo the reason why natalie portman is not included is because she’s an oscar front runner(imo again a sure winner) not a contender like what the tag line says. it would be quite funny if you put her alongside with them, i mean she’s on a different league now and her achievements as an actress are quite far above than any of the actors/actresses that are included on this issue and no it has nothing to do with her being pregnant and fat(for goodness sake she’s not)like some people on this site say… gee she can have her own cover!

Why is Jake Gyllenhaal on the cover? The last Oscar worthy performance he gave was in Brokeback. He’s spent the last 5 years making bad movies with lackluster preformances and giving horrible performances in bad showmances. Must be nice to have your PR firm buy you a magazine cover. Maybe rubbing elbows with real actors will inspire him to focus on his career instead of tabloid covers.

“the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment”??
Where the hell is the best actor Leonardo DiCaprio????????

it’s an shame that Robert Duvall is in the backround.

@akanni
what is your problem with kristen stewart exactly?
she isn’t even on this cover of VF and i don’t even know why her name even came up in this topic.
why are you so obsessed with her if you hate her so much? Jealous much?
For someone who is supposedly being shoved down your throat , you sure bring her name up when she isn’t even supposed to be in this specific topic of conversation about people being on this issue of VF Hollywood’s issue?
And FYI her parents are hardly any big major movie producers out there and I wonder how she is being shoved down your throat when all her movies outside of Twilight are little Indies? and if you are talking about Twilight then you should talk about Robert Pattinson and Talylor Lautner too or may be it’s cause they are man that you don’t complain about them? *rolls eyes*

The men of Twilight are the ones with the six figures salary and getting roles they don’t deserve even though they are average actors at best and only getting those leading roles just because they are in Twilight but oh watch, the fangirls will never ever criticize the male actors, just the female ones. JMO.

I feel rainbow power….. haha

@akanni: who said that the public don’t care about jake G or kristen stewart ? if it’s the case why jake’s movies are always a hit on the box office, and kristen is an amazing actress and her performances on the runaways and welcome to the rileys brought a lot of attention, if you don’t like them don’t look at this page and find something useful in your life

Some of my fave people! Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Franco, Jake Gyllenhaal and Andrew Garfield!

BTW It’s the Hollywood Issue. That’s why they have people like Olivia Wilde in the cover.

If you look under the title OSCAR CONTENDERS…you see Christian Bale, Annette Bening, Natalie Portman, and Jesse Eisenberg. Something obviously INSIDE the magazine. DUH!

BEST thing about this cover is: KRISTEN STEWART MAKES HOW MUCH????? hahahahahahahahaha!!!!! IKR? Overpayed piece of white trash!

jean, you are too funny !! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!! I truly needed a good laugh . Thank you

jean, you are too funny !! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!! I truly needed a good laugh . Thank you

jean, you are too funny !! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!! I truly needed a good laugh . Thank you

Jake Gyllenhaal ♥

yay, yay joseph is included in the mag!!!!!!!

@jean
that ‘Overpayed piece of white trash’ as you so eloquently say still gets paid more than you so haha
Still, I wonder why they never questions why male actors gets paid more than the female ones when in reality there are more young talented female actresses out there than male actors lol, I mean every year, there is a young talented actress that breaks out ex: Carey Mulligan, Jennifer Lawrence, Hailey Steinfield etc but still, there are way more male lead roles than female lead ones and all the female actresses has to battle it out for the few female lead ones, you ever wonder why you rarely hear about male actors battling it out for male lead roles ?
It’s cause Hollywood has a narrow-minded tight knit circle of elitist chauvinist male club that gives those average actors those lead roles and rotate among them and the talented female actresses are left doing only supporting roles. And there are even fewer female directors out there so it’s kind of unfair and really sad that it’s still this way in 2011.
So you know if Kristen gets paid more for Twilight I kind of glad for her even if Twilight is a ****** franchise, at least she was the lead in it and contributed enormously for its success, at least she is female and average male lead actors gets paid more in comic book franchises too so it’s only fair that female actresses gets paid well especially when she is the lead in it.

Ann H. is beyond gorgeous.

@sfingaaa: garrett hedlund, not kevin connolly.

that dress they stuck olivia wilde in is terrible! no matter how good-looking you are, the strips of (colored) toilet paper just covering your britney and your boobs will never be a good look. it reminds me of when toni braxton’s grammy dress for a few years back.

Seriously?? @ 02/01/2011 at 11:04 am

Who are half these people?? So many other people are more worthy of being on the cover. I like Rashida Jones, BUT SERIOUSLY….it’s not what you know it’s who you know.

So Jake Gyllenhaal is on the COVER of this issue after having two straight BOMBS this year? They put Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield in the corner after making a successful movie for Jake Gyllenhaal? I can understand Anne being on the cover since she is hosting the Oscars. Also what’s up with the statement that there is no nudity when one of the girls (don’t recognize her) is clearly naked down to her waist? This issue is full of so much FAIL.

Love Anne and Jake!!!!!!!

Natalie Portman should have been there! She did the best performance of the year! what a rubbish!

Super Cool @ 02/01/2011 at 2:09 pm

mila kunis looks really hot. way hotter than other women in those pics. and i don’t understand why olivia wilde is there. she hardly wears some dress in the picture. i don’t like her. who does?

Super Cool @ 02/01/2011 at 2:13 pm

@Super Cool: why is olivia wilde there…

I can’t believe Im going to say this but Ryan Reynolds looks really really good here.
Olivia Wilde looks like a *hore.
Thrilled to see Noomi Rapace

Jake G doesn’t deserve to be on this cover. He is a terrible actor who is just getting exposure from the TS phony PR. When his next movie Source Code is due to come out I’m sure his team will hook him up with some other fake gf.

I really do not understand why Rashida Jones is on this cover! She really hasn’t made a big name for herself and they put her on the cover of “Vanity Fair”?
I think Olivia Wilde & Rashida Jones are the only ones that are not deserving of this cover. If they would’ve put Hailee Steinfeld and Natalie Portman the cover would have been perfect but Vanity Fair are a bunch of sh*t! I do agree with the Anthony Mackie thing. They barely have any people of color on the covers, and no, Rashida Jones does not count. Hailee Steinfeld would, she’s Filipino & African-American but whatever.
I’m a 43 year old woman and it’s sad that people are saying such bad words about this Kristen Stewart girl. She makes a lot of money & she’s apparently dating what is considered one of the hottest men of Hollywood right now and I’m feeling a bit of jealousy from you young girls. The girl has obviously some talent and don’t blame her “famous” parents for this. She is someone people want to see and therefore she is making money and landing big covers like “Vogue”. Who are your idols? Miley Cyrus? Demi whatshername? Maybe even Lady Gaga? None of them have landed a big cover like Vogue. Get over yourselves girls & stop hating.

Glad to see Noomi on this cover. Great performance.

great cover.

Jake4ever @ 02/01/2011 at 4:10 pm

Give it a break – Jake G. is a way better actor than Robert Pattinson and the likes. LAOD was such a funny and adorable movie. The chemistry between Anne and Jake just pretending to be a couple was way above Ryan and Scarlet supposedly being in love for real. No wonder they got a devorce.

I really enjoy James F., Joseph G.L and Noomi Rapace – way to go for them!

Some of their choices are spot on but others could be replaced by far more talented actors with more box office appeal. Like Chris Pine, Johnny Depp, Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Emily Blunt, Viola Davis, Meryl Streep, Annette Bening, Melissa Leo, Christian Bale, etc. etc, etc.

anybody'sguess @ 02/01/2011 at 4:26 pm

i love the fashion i think more than the celebs lol. they def look more glam that what hollywood deserves credit for. rarely is there a normal, level headed actor; hollywood poisons souls and is basically degrading us culturally. when celebs like charlie sheen and lindsay lohan can still stumble around drunk and drugged, and they STILL get rewarded for it, there’s something wrong. but some of the people on here deserve some praise so good for them for being recognized. love anne hathaway! smart, classy, funny. she looks gorgeous in the dress!!

I like the cover choices minus Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gylenhall, only because I don’t understand it. Maybe Ryan because of Green Lantern?? And who knows how and why Jake G got there. Mila Kunis, Garret Hedlund, and Anthony Mackie are definitely the standouts though. They’re the most up and coming..

Vanity Fair does put African American actors on the cover. remember this?

http://justjared.buzznet.com/2006/12/05/vanity-fair-january-2007/

These issues always look the same to me.
Glad to see they included people like Noomi Rapace, Anthony Mackie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Rashida Jones.

WTF!!!!!!!!!! Ryan Reynolds?????

That’s the most boring ‘Hollywood’ issue ever. Snooze city, no one in that shoot has charisma or star power..and this annointing of horsey faced anne hathaway who is about exciting as a bag of rocks, is pretty lame.

covert operations @ 02/01/2011 at 5:31 pm

I’m sorry but Jake G shouldn’t be on the cover! Come on! He should have been the bartender not Robert Duvall. I’m happy to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt!

sunbears1 @ 02/01/2011 at 7:02 pm

Too many white people.

sunbears1 @ 02/01/2011 at 7:10 pm

@monie_26: Wow. One cover.

The cover is perfect because the most beautiful and charming actors and Anne are there.

I like Ryan, I live very much James for while and probably I´ll love him after 127 hours and I´ve ready fell in love with JAKE since BBM. He´s my favorite.

And, as usual, no women of color were represented. Such a shame, Vanity Fair, really.

“the glamour of 1930s”… so what the hell is olivia wilde wearing??

is this supposed to be the ‘up and coming’ issue? because ryan reynolds, robert duvall, anne hathaway, jake g, james franco etc are not up and coming lol they are established actors/actresses.

This photo is awesome. I mean it’s just incredible!! But there’s a danger to it.

Clearly this photo shoot is meant to provoke the glamorous era of 1930′s Hollywood and because of that my mind goes straight to those stars…

I think of Garbo, Astaire & Rogers, Gable & Lombard, William Powell and Myrna Loy, Dietrich, Cary Grant, Hepburn, Jean Harlow, Crawford, Gary Cooper, Davis, Stanwyck, Randolph Scott, Irene Dunne, Tracy, Cagney, Bogart, Norma Shearer, Errol Flynn, Claudette Colbert, The Barrymores. I could go on and on. I love Classic Hollywood!!

After having those marvelous thoughts swimming in your head…you look back at that photo and as beautiful as they are…they pale in comparison. They look like a bunch of wannabes kiddies playing dress up. It’s true what they say: “They simply don’t make stars like that anymore.” And this fantastic photograph proves it.

Gorgeous cover…. Oscar shame not nominating Andrew Garfield!!!

Wow. Very few people on that cover who deserve it, even fewer inside. Of ‘young’ Hollywood the only players from this season who should be on that thing are:

Ryan Gosling
Natalie Portman
Michell Williams

I’ll relent on Franco (Oscar) and Levitt (Inception), Mackie and Rapace too. Garfield, I guess even though I think they’re pushing that one too hard.

Anne Hathaway? How is she relevant to this past season? Love and Other Drugs wasn’t a huge hit or particularly critically acclaimed. It was just a good movie that did okay at the b.o. Kunis? Shock nomination I don’t see happening again within the next few years if at all.

Also: unimaginative cover. Using actors to mimic the 30s? Yawn. And that cover in no way evokes Shanghai in the 30s; Shanghai in the 30s was seductive, yes, but also classy. At least three of those girls look like their playing dress-up. Worse, dress-up in a high-class hookers clothes. They aren’t womanly enough to pull off those outfits yet.

Jokergurl @ 02/02/2011 at 1:50 am

James Franco has it all, looks, talent, comedic timing, he’s just fun to watch, but Jake Gyllenhaal, I don’t think he has the range. Back when he was doing Brokeback Mountain and that movie was getting phrase, he was on every cover then too but he did not have the charisma and range that his late co-star Heath Ledger did. Joseph Gordon Levitt is great too. Garrett Hedland, I liked him when he played Patroculus in Troy (as kind of an unknown) I thought he had a presence. Andrew Garfield I think has a screen presence (I thought he was great in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and Never Let Me Go) but Jake Gyllenhaal I think lacks that intensity that A list actors have like Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr. Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington, etc. etc.

Vanity Fair and yet another really white cover. lol. Yes, I said it. hehe.

greatest looking guys with great fashion then hollywood celebs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKWZcp5ZWYw

Jennifer Lawrence !!!!!!!!!!<3<3<3<3

@dex: no it does not cross my mind nor bother me; Im a white girl with blonde hair,. I don’t think about stuff like that….
Besides I see a black man on the cover. quit quit whining!

@*LoVE*: I agree. His performance was undeniably one of the best of 2010. The Oscars keep on losing credibility…..

hoitytoittoity @ 02/03/2011 at 3:37 am

Some of these people do not belong up there.

can they stop giving publicity to that jake gyllenhaal?

have you guys watched the video of this photoshoot? the interviewer was confirming the correct pronunciation of his name and he was offended because according to him has been working for years.

news flash!

we only care for heath ledger and michelle williams in BBM!

se

The people of Hollywood haven’t style more. They copy fashion of past.
Hallo! It isn’t possible to have a little imagination?
