Stars Glam Up Vanity Fair's Hollywood Issue

Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Anne Hathaway, and James Franco grace the cover of Vanity Fair‘s 17th annual Hollywood Issue.

For the special issue, the magazine “went back to the basics – no teenagers, no penguins, no (full-on) nudity, just the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment.”

The three-panel foldout, which was shot in L.A. and NYC, also features Jennifer Lawrence, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund, Noomi Rapace, and Robert Duvall.

“We wanted to evoke the glamour of 1930s Shanghai, an era of smoky, alluring elegance,” said VF fashion and style director Jessica Diehl. “We had the gentlemen looking dashing in black tie, whilst the ladies were radiant in spring’s gowns – from Gucci to Yves Saint Laurent – and glittering with diamonds from Chanel and other arbiters of glamour.”

that ‘Overpayed piece of white trash’ as you so eloquently say still gets paid more than you so haha
Still, I wonder why they never questions why male actors gets paid more than the female ones when in reality there are more young talented female actresses out there than male actors lol, I mean every year, there is a young talented actress that breaks out ex: Carey Mulligan, Jennifer Lawrence, Hailey Steinfield etc but still, there are way more male lead roles than female lead ones and all the female actresses has to battle it out for the few female lead ones, you ever wonder why you rarely hear about male actors battling it out for male lead roles ?
It’s cause Hollywood has a narrow-minded tight knit circle of elitist chauvinist male club that gives those average actors those lead roles and rotate among them and the talented female actresses are left doing only supporting roles. And there are even fewer female directors out there so it’s kind of unfair and really sad that it’s still this way in 2011.
So you know if Kristen gets paid more for Twilight I kind of glad for her even if Twilight is a shitty franchise, at least she was the lead in it and contributed enormously for its success, at least she is female and average male lead actors gets paid more in comic book franchises too so it’s only fair that female actresses gets paid well especially when she is the lead in it.

  • Lee

    Ann H. is beyond gorgeous.

  • gina

@sfingaaa: garrett hedlund, not kevin connolly.

that dress they stuck olivia wilde in is terrible! no matter how good-looking you are, the strips of (colored) toilet paper just covering your britney and your boobs will never be a good look. it reminds me of when toni braxton’s grammy dress for a few years back.

  • Seriously??

Who are half these people?? So many other people are more worthy of being on the cover. I like Rashida Jones, BUT SERIOUSLY….it’s not what you know it’s who you know.

  • Janey

So Jake Gyllenhaal is on the COVER of this issue after having two straight BOMBS this year? They put Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield in the corner after making a successful movie for Jake Gyllenhaal? I can understand Anne being on the cover since she is hosting the Oscars. Also what’s up with the statement that there is no nudity when one of the girls (don’t recognize her) is clearly naked down to her waist? This issue is full of so much FAIL.

  • bobbi

    Love Anne and Jake!!!!!!!

  • Cecilia

Natalie Portman should have been there! She did the best performance of the year! what a rubbish!

  • Super Cool

mila kunis looks really hot. way hotter than other women in those pics. and i don’t understand why olivia wilde is there. she hardly wears some dress in the picture. i don’t like her. who does?

  • Super Cool

@Super Cool: why is olivia wilde there…

  • Vesper

I can’t believe Im going to say this but Ryan Reynolds looks really really good here.
Olivia Wilde looks like a *hore.
    Thrilled to see Noomi Rapace

  • Mandy

Jake G doesn’t deserve to be on this cover. He is a terrible actor who is just getting exposure from the TS phony PR. When his next movie Source Code is due to come out I’m sure his team will hook him up with some other fake gf.

  • Imelda

I really do not understand why Rashida Jones is on this cover! She really hasn’t made a big name for herself and they put her on the cover of “Vanity Fair”?
I think Olivia Wilde & Rashida Jones are the only ones that are not deserving of this cover. If they would’ve put Hailee Steinfeld and Natalie Portman the cover would have been perfect but Vanity Fair are a bunch of sh*t! I do agree with the Anthony Mackie thing. They barely have any people of color on the covers, and no, Rashida Jones does not count. Hailee Steinfeld would, she’s Filipino & African-American but whatever.
I’m a 43 year old woman and it’s sad that people are saying such bad words about this Kristen Stewart girl. She makes a lot of money & she’s apparently dating what is considered one of the hottest men of Hollywood right now and I’m feeling a bit of jealousy from you young girls. The girl has obviously some talent and don’t blame her “famous” parents for this. She is someone people want to see and therefore she is making money and landing big covers like “Vogue”. Who are your idols? Miley Cyrus? Demi whatshername? Maybe even Lady Gaga? None of them have landed a big cover like Vogue. Get over yourselves girls & stop hating.

Glad to see Noomi on this cover. Great performance.

  • blair

    great cover.

  • Jake4ever

Give it a break – Jake G. is a way better actor than Robert Pattinson and the likes. LAOD was such a funny and adorable movie. The chemistry between Anne and Jake just pretending to be a couple was way above Ryan and Scarlet supposedly being in love for real. No wonder they got a devorce.

I really enjoy James F., Joseph G.L and Noomi Rapace – way to go for them!

  • monie_26

Some of their choices are spot on but others could be replaced by far more talented actors with more box office appeal. Like Chris Pine, Johnny Depp, Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Emily Blunt, Viola Davis, Meryl Streep, Annette Bening, Melissa Leo, Christian Bale, etc. etc, etc.

  • anybody’sguess

i love the fashion i think more than the celebs lol. they def look more glam that what hollywood deserves credit for. rarely is there a normal, level headed actor; hollywood poisons souls and is basically degrading us culturally. when celebs like charlie sheen and lindsay lohan can still stumble around drunk and drugged, and they STILL get rewarded for it, there’s something wrong. but some of the people on here deserve some praise so good for them for being recognized. love anne hathaway! smart, classy, funny. she looks gorgeous in the dress!!

  • kinzy

I like the cover choices minus Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gylenhall, only because I don’t understand it. Maybe Ryan because of Green Lantern?? And who knows how and why Jake G got there. Mila Kunis, Garret Hedlund, and Anthony Mackie are definitely the standouts though. They’re the most up and coming..

  • monie_26

Vanity Fair does put African American actors on the cover. remember this?

  • Celia

These issues always look the same to me.
Glad to see they included people like Noomi Rapace, Anthony Mackie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Rashida Jones.

  • yourmama

    WTF!!!!!!!!!! Ryan Reynolds?????

That’s the most boring ‘Hollywood’ issue ever. Snooze city, no one in that shoot has charisma or star power..and this annointing of horsey faced anne hathaway who is about exciting as a bag of rocks, is pretty lame.

  • covert operations

I’m sorry but Jake G shouldn’t be on the cover! Come on! He should have been the bartender not Robert Duvall. I’m happy to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt!

  • sunbears1

    Too many white people.

  • sunbears1

    @monie_26: Wow. One cover.

  • stella

The cover is perfect because the most beautiful and charming actors and Anne are there.

I like Ryan, I live very much James for while and probably I´ll love him after 127 hours and I´ve ready fell in love with JAKE since BBM. He´s my favorite.

  • reb

And, as usual, no women of color were represented. Such a shame, Vanity Fair, really.

  • k

“the glamour of 1930s”… so what the hell is olivia wilde wearing??

  • what

is this supposed to be the ‘up and coming’ issue? because ryan reynolds, robert duvall, anne hathaway, jake g, james franco etc are not up and coming lol they are established actors/actresses.

  • hal

This photo is awesome. I mean it’s just incredible!! But there’s a danger to it.

Clearly this photo shoot is meant to provoke the glamorous era of 1930′s Hollywood and because of that my mind goes straight to those stars…

I think of Garbo, Astaire & Rogers, Gable & Lombard, William Powell and Myrna Loy, Dietrich, Cary Grant, Hepburn, Jean Harlow, Crawford, Gary Cooper, Davis, Stanwyck, Randolph Scott, Irene Dunne, Tracy, Cagney, Bogart, Norma Shearer, Errol Flynn, Claudette Colbert, The Barrymores. I could go on and on. I love Classic Hollywood!!

After having those marvelous thoughts swimming in your head…you look back at that photo and as beautiful as they are…they pale in comparison. They look like a bunch of wannabes kiddies playing dress up. It’s true what they say: “They simply don’t make stars like that anymore.” And this fantastic photograph proves it.

  • *LoVE*

Gorgeous cover…. Oscar shame not nominating Andrew Garfield!!!

  • Sam

Wow. Very few people on that cover who deserve it, even fewer inside. Of ‘young’ Hollywood the only players from this season who should be on that thing are:

    Ryan Gosling
    Natalie Portman
    Michell Williams

I’ll relent on Franco (Oscar) and Levitt (Inception), Mackie and Rapace too. Garfield, I guess even though I think they’re pushing that one too hard.

Anne Hathaway? How is she relevant to this past season? Love and Other Drugs wasn’t a huge hit or particularly critically acclaimed. It was just a good movie that did okay at the b.o. Kunis? Shock nomination I don’t see happening again within the next few years if at all.

Also: unimaginative cover. Using actors to mimic the 30s? Yawn. And that cover in no way evokes Shanghai in the 30s; Shanghai in the 30s was seductive, yes, but also classy. At least three of those girls look like their playing dress-up. Worse, dress-up in a high-class hookers clothes. They aren’t womanly enough to pull off those outfits yet.

  • Jokergurl

James Franco has it all, looks, talent, comedic timing, he’s just fun to watch, but Jake Gyllenhaal, I don’t think he has the range. Back when he was doing Brokeback Mountain and that movie was getting phrase, he was on every cover then too but he did not have the charisma and range that his late co-star Heath Ledger did. Joseph Gordon Levitt is great too. Garrett Hedland, I liked him when he played Patroculus in Troy (as kind of an unknown) I thought he had a presence. Andrew Garfield I think has a screen presence (I thought he was great in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and Never Let Me Go) but Jake Gyllenhaal I think lacks that intensity that A list actors have like Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr. Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington, etc. etc.

  • Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan

Vanity Fair and yet another really white cover. lol. Yes, I said it. hehe.

  • DBSK

  • NI

    Jennifer Lawrence !!!!!!!!!!<3<3<3<3

  • uhh

@dex: no it does not cross my mind nor bother me; Im a white girl with blonde hair,. I don’t think about stuff like that….
Besides I see a black man on the cover. quit quit whining!

  • Shelly

@*LoVE*: I agree. His performance was undeniably one of the best of 2010. The Oscars keep on losing credibility…..

  • hoitytoittoity

Some of these people do not belong up there.

  • lace

can they stop giving publicity to that jake gyllenhaal?

have you guys watched the video of this photoshoot? the interviewer was confirming the correct pronunciation of his name and he was offended because according to him has been working for years.

    news flash!

we only care for heath ledger and michelle williams in BBM!

  • se

The people of Hollywood haven’t style more. They copy fashion of past.
Hallo! It isn’t possible to have a little imagination?
