Stars Glam Up Vanity Fair's Hollywood Issue

Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Anne Hathaway, and James Franco grace the cover of Vanity Fair‘s 17th annual Hollywood Issue.

For the special issue, the magazine “went back to the basics – no teenagers, no penguins, no (full-on) nudity, just the most exciting actors and actresses of the moment.”

The three-panel foldout, which was shot in L.A. and NYC, also features Jennifer Lawrence, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund, Noomi Rapace, and Robert Duvall.

“We wanted to evoke the glamour of 1930s Shanghai, an era of smoky, alluring elegance,” said VF fashion and style director Jessica Diehl. “We had the gentlemen looking dashing in black tie, whilst the ladies were radiant in spring’s gowns – from Gucci to Yves Saint Laurent – and glittering with diamonds from Chanel and other arbiters of glamour.”

These issues always look the same to me.
Glad to see they included people like Noomi Rapace, Anthony Mackie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Rashida Jones.

That’s the most boring ‘Hollywood’ issue ever. Snooze city, no one in that shoot has charisma or star power..and this annointing of horsey faced anne hathaway who is about exciting as a bag of rocks, is pretty lame.

I’m sorry but Jake G shouldn’t be on the cover! Come on! He should have been the bartender not Robert Duvall. I’m happy to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt!

The cover is perfect because the most beautiful and charming actors and Anne are there.

And, as usual, no women of color were represented. Such a shame, Vanity Fair, really.

is this supposed to be the ‘up and coming’ issue? because ryan reynolds, robert duvall, anne hathaway, jake g, james franco etc are not up and coming lol they are established actors/actresses.

This photo is awesome. I mean it’s just incredible!! But there’s a danger to it.

Clearly this photo shoot is meant to provoke the glamorous era of 1930′s Hollywood and because of that my mind goes straight to those stars…

I think of Garbo, Astaire & Rogers, Gable & Lombard, William Powell and Myrna Loy, Dietrich, Cary Grant, Hepburn, Jean Harlow, Crawford, Gary Cooper, Davis, Stanwyck, Randolph Scott, Irene Dunne, Tracy, Cagney, Bogart, Norma Shearer, Errol Flynn, Claudette Colbert, The Barrymores. I could go on and on. I love Classic Hollywood!!

After having those marvelous thoughts swimming in your head…you look back at that photo and as beautiful as they are…they pale in comparison. They look like a bunch of wannabes kiddies playing dress up. It’s true what they say: “They simply don’t make stars like that anymore.” And this fantastic photograph proves it.

Gorgeous cover…. Oscar shame not nominating Andrew Garfield!!!

Wow. Very few people on that cover who deserve it, even fewer inside. Of ‘young’ Hollywood the only players from this season who should be on that thing are:

    Ryan Gosling
    Natalie Portman
    Michell Williams

I’ll relent on Franco (Oscar) and Levitt (Inception), Mackie and Rapace too. Garfield, I guess even though I think they’re pushing that one too hard.

Anne Hathaway? How is she relevant to this past season? Love and Other Drugs wasn’t a huge hit or particularly critically acclaimed. It was just a good movie that did okay at the b.o. Kunis? Shock nomination I don’t see happening again within the next few years if at all.

Also: unimaginative cover. Using actors to mimic the 30s? Yawn. And that cover in no way evokes Shanghai in the 30s; Shanghai in the 30s was seductive, yes, but also classy. At least three of those girls look like their playing dress-up. Worse, dress-up in a high-class hookers clothes. They aren’t womanly enough to pull off those outfits yet.

James Franco has it all, looks, talent, comedic timing, he’s just fun to watch, but Jake Gyllenhaal, I don’t think he has the range. Back when he was doing Brokeback Mountain and that movie was getting phrase, he was on every cover then too but he did not have the charisma and range that his late co-star Heath Ledger did. Joseph Gordon Levitt is great too. Garrett Hedland, I liked him when he played Patroculus in Troy (as kind of an unknown) I thought he had a presence. Andrew Garfield I think has a screen presence (I thought he was great in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and Never Let Me Go) but Jake Gyllenhaal I think lacks that intensity that A list actors have like Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr. Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington, etc. etc.

@*LoVE*: I agree. His performance was undeniably one of the best of 2010. The Oscars keep on losing credibility…..
