Christina Aguilera Responds to National Anthem Fumble

Christina Aguilera has responded to the discussion over her fumble of the lyrics to the National Anthem during her performance at the Super Bowl on Sunday (February 6).

WATCH: Christina Aguilera perform the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV

” I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place,” Christina shared in a statement to “I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”

Instead of singing the line “o’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” Christina sang “what so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming.”

WHAT DID YOU THINK of Christina’s National Anthem performance?

  • ck_always

Let’s face it, nobody cares about the National Anthem on these stages anyways. Hell, the only reason people stand up is because they don’t want to be ‘the’ guy that sits down.

  • April 6

I had to go to Youtube and watch Whitney Houston’s 1991 Super Bowl Anthem to get the tin can taste out of my mouth that was Aguilera’s version. Someone got lazy and didn’t do their home work.

Someone on CNN commented, “You don’t want your Anthem to sound like a booty call.” That’s pretty accurate.

  • diva

Yeah she made a slight mistake with the lyrics. It’s not that tragic. Ppl are over-reacting as usual. And Christina’s human after all and that mistake was unintentional cos she never messed up those lyrics before. She was obviously nervous.

I thought she looked great too and the louboutins were amazing.

  • diva

    @April 6:

Whitney’s version was the best but it was a studio version and she lipped to it. Christina chose to sing this LIVE and acapella too. It must be nerve wrecking lol.

  • Cristiano

She was AWESOME. Her voice and emotion it was beautiful.

And I remember she was singing in NBA and she surely knows to sing the National Anthem!

  • Johnny Utah

I’m just glad Snooki ditched the orange tanner before performing the National Anthem.

  • laverdadduele

““I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country”…yeah right, way to demonstrate it tonight, Sl*tina, screwing up and embarrassing us all. Whose brilliant idea was to ask this piece of trash to sign our National Anthem anyway?

  • Richard

This was awful, not because of the lyrics mistake. She got up there and sang it like a shrieking wanna-be gospel singer. It was atrocious. You can’t just change the main melody of a song (especially one as important as the Star-Spangled Banner). It’s not an ad-lib session. The music doesn’t say “rubato” at the top. It’s a national anthem. Sing it the right way.

Sure, some musical considerations are given; but she was way out of line with this rendition. Awful. The lyrics mistake just exacerbates the situation.

    love her voice

    Christina is just AMAZING!
It´s not the end of the world!!!! We love you Christina no matter what…!!!

Problem with her has always been this: she has a strong voice so she thinks hitting high notes is all you need. She needs to listen to Whitney, Aretha, and maybe even Billie Holiday to understand what true singing is: it has nothing to do with high notes but with something deeper. Floptina does not have that deeper thing so she always sounds forced. It was a terrible rendition. Period.

  • Rattlesnake

this whole super bowl was lame it will go down in history as full of slip-ups, oversights and bungles …. and lame half time performance ….. glad its all over …oh and the classic bungle was the fly over the stadium with the roof closed .. wow how stupid was that ?

  • Allison Doyle

That wasn’t the only mess up. She also exchanged “flag” for “plane,” and flip flopped more lyrics in the beginning.

3 mess ups? Come on now.

This was fine, the black eyed peas were so annoying, I guess the NFL was trying to save money this year! Whack

  • hoopwithcoop

Jim Cornelison should sing all the National Anthems at these type of events… he knows the words and we can all sing along.
    Keep it simple!!!

  • wr

“true spirit of its anthem still came through”?? How about trying to get the true melody of the anthem come through (the lyric thing notwithstanding), instead of adding hundreds of random unrelated notes??

  • wr

    @مواقع نسائية:

    Says the arab.

  • Hot Mama

I don’t really care for her, even though I think she has an amazingly powerful voice. But still, if you’re an actor, you memorize your lines. If you’re singing the national anthem in a forum such as the damn Super Bowl…you should COMMIT THOSE LYRICS TO MEMORY!!! That was just wrong.

  • Glen

And she got paid for that? It isn’t like she was asked to sing the national anthem of Finland, in Finnish! It’s the national anthem of the country she lives in and has lived in all her life, if not all. Sorry Christina, I feel the love, but I don’t think that is justification for gross incompetency.

  • bruce

But the National Anthem is not something you get a free pass on. All the BS on this board about “know one really cares” and “oh…she tried” insulting to a lot of people, but especially to those who defend our country. I may be a proud liberal, but I still find screwing up the National Anthem inexcusable. If you are going to sing the National Anthem you MUST know the words. Period.

  • cphine

If she wasn’t destroying the song with that rediculous rendition to begin with, I might forgive the lyric mess up. This was just plain insulting to our country. The song has notes. Try singing them next time!

  • Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan

I think she comes off self-indulgent all the time. I think in her mind, doing vocal acrobaticcs is all she needs and she does not need to know lyrics. I find her type of singing incredibly annoying. There is no melody or heart to it. She needs to be locked in a room for 3 days and forced to listen to Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Barbra Streisand. Oh and Aretha too. She needs to know what real singers sound like. Real singers don’t have to scream – it comes from the heart not the throat. FAIL.

  • bruce

Geez..when did the expression scroo up require editing?

  • Plainer

I cringe when entainers at sportsevents sing the national anthem because they try to improvise with the melody and almost scream when singing it. Don’t be fancy, just sing it straight with little off-key harmony . Christine made it too complicated and got into trouble…but nevertheless…she did okay but not as good as Whitney Houston’s. Damn Whitney’s rendition was good.

  • T.C.

Do you think the Steeler player with tears flowing down noticed the mix-up?
Hell, who on the street can tell you all the words?

  • k

the true spirit of the anthem couldn’t breathe under all of her ridiculous vocal runs.

  • janiece

everyone keeps mentioning whitneys version as being the best, but are people forgetting when beyonce sang the anthem a few years ago at the superbowl. in my opinion that is the best version hands down. gives me chills every time i listen to it.

  • Joe

    Lulz Failed.

She is a well paid pro who failed to produce anything useful. At best she was unable to remember what elementary schoolers can… at worst she just did not care. both ways it was fail.

  • http://@wendellbrown Wendell B

Christina did fantastic! What an amazing voice and talent. Her performance was clearly engaging, emotional, and heart-felt. I didn’t know she could sing so well – such a range. This very, very minor “flub” proved that she WASNT lip-syncing – which in itself is rare and amazing (given that so many other performers in those situations lip-sync).

  • bruce

Also, the National Anthem is not a gospel or R&B song. If someone chooses to sing America the Beautiful or God Bless America in the manner that she sang today, I have no problem with that. However, the National Anthem is in a totally different category.

  • Malcolm

I think the only valid criticisms of Aguilera come from those who have performed this song in front of an audience of tens of millions of people. Add to that, they have to actually be SINGING the song, as opposed to the more common lip syncing to a recording.

And she KNOWS the words, she’s done the song plenty of times. She made a mistake because she was focusing on performance, breathing, hitting notes and other things that virtually everyone who is critical of her knows nothing about. God forbid she has a mental hiccup — but she continued through the rest of the performance like a pro.

I don’t even really LIKE her as an artist — I just find it amazing that people who would NEVER have the nerve to stand up there and perform get their kicks off slinging anonymous insults from their keyboards.

Oh yeah – and Burlesque is bad and she’s gained weight. So clearly that makes YOU awesome.

  • Carlitos

    SING* You’re a dumbass! @laverdadduele:

  • Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan

Then national anthem CAN be sung as a gospel song because it is celebrating the spirit of America and that in essence is GOSPEL. You just have to be a REALLY good gospel singer like Patti Labelle and Whitney Houston to pull it off though, otherwise it sounds like this hot mess.

  • lidya

    ooh you americans…

  • Joey

I can’t believe the NFL hires these so called “grammy winning” morons who absolutely destroy our national anthem and replace it with their own versions as if they have some better way of their own??? Apparently they don’t know any better and it’s a disgrace to see these people attempt to sing the anthem while turning it into a pathetic show off gospel tune instead. Hasn’t anybody told these people that this isn’t about them personally and to sing the GD anthem the way it’s supposed to be sang, not some hacked up version where the melody and lyrics aparently don’t matter to them??? This really pisses me off and I wish I could tell them how I feel about their grammy winning performances, they wouldn’t do it again I can promise you that!

  • jeimy

the girl can sing, no question, but this one was just horrible, not because the mistake she made, but because they way she decided it to sing, this is not MTV music awards or the gramys, please just show some respet, you don’t have to proof yourself to anyone.

  • http://facebook Boober

Deion Sanders on Twitter says, that the national anthem was a remix, and that the NFL was running short on time. You cant remix the National Anthem. For a pro singer….. sing it right or dont sign it at all. She screwed up once before, and did it again. There is no excuse for it. and yeah everyone is human, but i bet you….. We could stand up and sing our National Anthem (it may not be in tune) but we would sing it the right way.

  • http://facebook Boober

A straffing run by those fighter jets would have been appropriate for Christina Aguilera……..

  • smshct

she is supposedly a pro…neither the voice or the botched lyrics demonstrated any semblence of professionalism

Xtina sounded like a cat in heat. One thing these clueless entertainers better get through their pea brains is that you mess with the National Anthem your life is going to SUCK big time! ask roseann barr! Its not about messing up the lyric, she disrespected the song and the American people and those troops. The woman makes millions of dollars and she screws up OUR National Anthem, she is gonna pay big time for the MAJOR screw up.

  • Joey

@laverdadduele: This POS is a disgrace and I would like to know who keeps asking these morons to show up and destroy the anthem by replacing it with their own suck a$$ show off lousy version as if somehow their way is better???

I agree with many of you. The lyric mess up is forgivable but what is with the horrible rendition and screaming. She has such a beautiful voice but the she disgraced the entire country with crocking out the song. They should have just let the Glee girl sing!

  • Angel

Rude. She’s fwaking human idiot.@bruce: She knows the word, this is not the first time she sing the NA.. She was nervous.

  • rae

wow! calm down people u act like its the end of the world by her messing up the song so what??! shes human, we make mistakes grow up!!
