Christina Aguilera Responds to National Anthem Fumble

Christina Aguilera has responded to the discussion over her fumble of the lyrics to the National Anthem during her performance at the Super Bowl on Sunday (February 6).

WATCH: Christina Aguilera perform the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV

” I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place,” Christina shared in a statement to “I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”

Instead of singing the line “o’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” Christina sang “what so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming.”

WHAT DID YOU THINK of Christina’s National Anthem performance?

Let’s face it, nobody cares about the National Anthem on these stages anyways. Hell, the only reason people stand up is because they don’t want to be ‘the’ guy that sits down.

    April 6 Says:

I had to go to Youtube and watch Whitney Houston’s 1991 Super Bowl Anthem to get the tin can taste out of my mouth that was Aguilera’s version. Someone got lazy and didn’t do their home work.

Someone on CNN commented, “You don’t want your Anthem to sound like a booty call.” That’s pretty accurate.

    diva Says:

Yeah she made a slight mistake with the lyrics. It’s not that tragic. Ppl are over-reacting as usual. And Christina’s human after all and that mistake was unintentional cos she never messed up those lyrics before. She was obviously nervous.

I thought she looked great too and the louboutins were amazing.

Whitney’s version was the best but it was a studio version and she lipped to it. Christina chose to sing this LIVE and acapella too. It must be nerve wrecking lol.

    Richard Says:

This was awful, not because of the lyrics mistake. She got up there and sang it like a shrieking wanna-be gospel singer. It was atrocious. You can’t just change the main melody of a song (especially one as important as the Star-Spangled Banner). It’s not an ad-lib session. The music doesn’t say “rubato” at the top. It’s a national anthem. Sing it the right way.

Sure, some musical considerations are given; but she was way out of line with this rendition. Awful. The lyrics mistake just exacerbates the situation.

Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan Says:

Problem with her has always been this: she has a strong voice so she thinks hitting high notes is all you need. She needs to listen to Whitney, Aretha, and maybe even Billie Holiday to understand what true singing is: it has nothing to do with high notes but with something deeper. Floptina does not have that deeper thing so she always sounds forced. It was a terrible rendition. Period.

I don’t really care for her, even though I think she has an amazingly powerful voice. But still, if you’re an actor, you memorize your lines. If you’re singing the national anthem in a forum such as the damn Super Bowl…you should COMMIT THOSE LYRICS TO MEMORY!!! That was just wrong.

  23. 23
    Glen Says:

And she got paid for that? It isn’t like she was asked to sing the national anthem of Finland, in Finnish! It’s the national anthem of the country she lives in and has lived in all her life, if not all. Sorry Christina, I feel the love, but I don’t think that is justification for gross incompetency.

  24. 24
    bruce Says:

But the National Anthem is not something you get a free pass on. All the BS on this board about “know one really cares” and “oh…she tried” insulting to a lot of people, but especially to those who defend our country. I may be a proud liberal, but I still find ******** up the National Anthem inexcusable. If you are going to sing the National Anthem you MUST know the words. Period.

  25. 25
    cphine Says:

If she wasn’t destroying the song with that rediculous rendition to begin with, I might forgive the lyric mess up. This was just plain insulting to our country. The song has notes. Try singing them next time!

  26. 26
Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan Says:

I think she comes off self-indulgent all the time. I think in her mind, doing vocal acrobaticcs is all she needs and she does not need to know lyrics. I find her type of singing incredibly annoying. There is no melody or heart to it. She needs to be locked in a room for 3 days and forced to listen to Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Barbra Streisand. Oh and Aretha too. She needs to know what real singers sound like. Real singers don’t have to scream – it comes from the heart not the throat. FAIL.

I cringe when entainers at sportsevents sing the national anthem because they try to improvise with the melody and almost scream when singing it. Don’t be fancy, just sing it straight with little off-key harmony . Christine made it too complicated and got into trouble…but nevertheless…she did okay but not as good as Whitney Houston’s. Damn Whitney’s rendition was good.

    Wendell B Says:

Christina did fantastic! What an amazing voice and talent. Her performance was clearly engaging, emotional, and heart-felt. I didn’t know she could sing so well – such a range. This very, very minor “flub” proved that she WASNT lip-syncing – which in itself is rare and amazing (given that so many other performers in those situations lip-sync).

  34. 34
    bruce Says:

Also, the National Anthem is not a gospel or R&B song. If someone chooses to sing America the Beautiful or God Bless America in the manner that she sang today, I have no problem with that. However, the National Anthem is in a totally different category.

  35. 35
    Malcolm Says:

I think the only valid criticisms of Aguilera come from those who have performed this song in front of an audience of tens of millions of people. Add to that, they have to actually be SINGING the song, as opposed to the more common lip syncing to a recording.

And she KNOWS the words, she’s done the song plenty of times. She made a mistake because she was focusing on performance, breathing, hitting notes and other things that virtually everyone who is critical of her knows nothing about. God forbid she has a mental hiccup — but she continued through the rest of the performance like a pro.

I don’t even really LIKE her as an artist — I just find it amazing that people who would NEVER have the nerve to stand up there and perform get their kicks off slinging anonymous insults from their keyboards.

Oh yeah – and Burlesque is bad and she’s gained weight. So clearly that makes YOU awesome.

Then national anthem CAN be sung as a gospel song because it is celebrating the spirit of America and that in essence is GOSPEL. You just have to be a REALLY good gospel singer like Patti Labelle and Whitney Houston to pull it off though, otherwise it sounds like this hot mess.

Apparently they don’t know any better and it’s a disgrace to see these people attempt to sing the anthem while turning it into a pathetic show off gospel tune instead. Hasn’t anybody told these people that this isn’t about them personally and to sing the GD anthem the way it’s supposed to be sang, not some hacked up version where the melody and lyrics aparently don’t matter to them??? This really pisses me off and I wish I could tell them how I feel about their grammy winning performances, they wouldn’t do it again I can promise you that!

    Sfc Army Ret Says:

Our national anthem is very sacred to this country and should be treated with the utmost respect and reverence. Those that sing it should do so with the intent to do it proud and to honor those that created and paid the ultimate price to make this country what it is today. It’s great to hear performers put a little dazzle in it but ultimately you sing it correctly and know the words. Any famous person or celebrity that has accepted the honor to sing it should take it seriously and rehearse it. To give the excuse that she was nervous is not enough. She had performed a million times in front of millions of people in different venues to have gotten this one correct. But I really think it’s a tragedy to think that there are several Americans that don’t know the words themselves. Those that have responded to this as no big deal should really think about moving. Our national anthem is symbolic to all the men and women throughout our history that gave their life to allow our freedom and that is a big deal. You stand up, take your hat off, stop talking and give honor when this song is played. You should get goosebumps and think about this great country when you heart the national anthem and if you don’t know the words yourself google it.

NOT “oh i had so much love, hope you felt it.” Too bad the audience saw your LACK of emotion behind it.

    Joey Says:

It is absolutely astounding to me that the people who sing our national anthem DON’T know any better than to sing it the way it was origionally intended. These days apparently they all seem to think singing the anthem is a time for them to show off, this is what really gets to me. How embarrassing! They don’t know any better and somehow the people responsible for hiring these turds don’t seem to know any better either??? I bet i’m not alone in saying that I would rather hear a military band play the national anthem while the fans sing along as opposed to what we continually have to suffer through with these turds who can’t even get the lyric right. I knew this would happen again, I knew it and when I heard the first three seconds of her I had to turn the channel. That was it! I can’t be the only one who is really pissed that this problem continues on and on without anybody putting a stop to it. Tell these people to sing the anthem correctly, NOT their own way showing off and making a gospel show tune out of it.

  63. 63
    Sfc Army Ret Says:

Those of you that see nothing wrong with this are also the ones that have done nothing for this country. You haven’t served in the military, never saw combat, never bled, sweat or cried because you lost a comrade that served next to you. Probably just go through life without a clue of what it takes to make this country great. Probably take what you have for granted and will never make a sacrifice for this country. Probably don’t know the words to the”pledge of allegiance”. Probably still won’t get it after reading what people write about this snafu. But unfortunately that is what makes this country great….the right for people to go through life ignorant of the sacrifices that were made for you to live that way.

  64. 64
    KAW_Like_a_crow Says:

Christina sang Our nation’s anthem like any superstar with a good voice would have. If you have ever seen an arrangement for this song you will see that no particular speed is indicated; so in a sense, the entire song is up for interpretaion. Christina’s choice to sing the song slowly to showcase her voice was refreshing for that fact that nobody has heard anything from her for years. Could it have been better? Sure Should she have remembered the lyrics? Yes.

Next case. I am an aspiring actor, and to this day I have never been able to recite my lines verbatim. The real talent is when you realize that mistake and act like it didn’t happen. Don’t go back and try to fix it, don’t dwell on the past. Sure she messed up the words of the National Anthem, but the energy she was putting out showed how much she does love this country! You can’t fake singing with emotion, it just doesn’t happen. Many people are getting mad at her for forgetting one line out of the song, but I think Francis Scott Key would be pretty sad to hear most Americans don’t even know the last 3 verses.

Finally I leave you with a little bit of knowledge. The Star Spangled Banner was origionally a poem written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key about what he saw from an enamy ship just outside of Fort McHenrey. This “song” didn’t become our nation’s anthem until March 3, 1931. pretty neat stuff right? Oh yeah, and did I mention, the Star Spangled Banner stole the melody of a famouse English drinking song? Tying that into my first paragraph, English dringking songs have no tempo… That means the anthem has no set tempo, so quit complaining!

  65. 65
    Joey Says:

To the “WHATEVER” crowd, If you don’t know any better either, don’t pass this off as if it were no big deal or as if you speak for the rest of us, YOU DON’T and IT IS! That is precisely what is wrong with this country, there is an ilk of people in this country who seem to have adopted this attitude of complacency and mediocrity as if it destroying the anthem were ok. You don’t speak for me and you never will! I am going to do everything in my power in the music business to put a stop to this continual disgrace of our national anthem by the “grammy” award winning crowd who can’t seem to get it right. That includes the morons who continue to pick these people without telling them to please “sing the anthem the way it was written” NOT some jive gospell version as if it were a church choir audition!

    Joey Says:

NO WAY, Don’t just push this aside, it is important to understand that our national anthem already has a MELODY and LYRIC and they need to sing it the way it was intended. It’s a march and has a certain cadence which makes it so powerful. Don’t you understand WHY this is so important??? To have to suffer through watching our national anthem get shredded by some award winning hack is more than I can handle, I have to turn the channel. I can’t even watch it! Whitney Houston did an amazing version and she’s a rare example who actually made her version work. It was really well done but most of them ruin it. This has happened too many times and needs to be addressed. It sets the wrong example and is a national embarrassement for the rest of the world to see.

Seriously “caught in the moment” Although most of us are taught this song at such as young age, I’m sure she has heard this song at some point in her life. She just made a total fool of herself.

How can you get your national Anthem. A singer is chosen based on professionalism to “NOT” get caught in the moment. crying and getting emotional would be okay, but forgetting the words… She should have done som research.

Maybe if she didn’t butcher the song so much and sing notes that are no where on the music sheets she might have remembered where she was in the song. I fully understand want croneing is but keep it to your personal music, and sing the Anthem how it was written.

Nice work! Whitney was perfect and so was Beyonce. She also had trouble with that last high note…. She’ll never be able to take this one back. people will always look back and say “oh yeah Christina, she messed up the words”

She was strong and kept going which Im sure others would have crumbled, stopped and restarted the line, or made some horrific face to let ppl know they messed up. She did beautifully and unlike most singers, she didn’t lip sing like J-hud, or faith hill and she did it acapella, because if she had music or a band behind her ppl really wouldn’t have noticed!! If patriotism hinges on this song then why the hell are we playing it before sporting events??!!! So she just gave all the haters something else to feed on, she has to be one of the most hated ppl out there. So much for anti-bullying because celebrities aren’t human so we can crap all over them to make ourselves feel better and that’s okay. I swear we have to be the most judgemental group of ppl, yet claim this is the “land of the free,” yeah only if you fit into some mold of perfect!! I mean how many times did you all have to watch the video and then google the lyrics to actually see where she flubbed? I bet about 98% had to!! It’s not that serious and that’s why you see so many other singers coming to her defense!

she was terrible. the girl before her that did america the beautiful had a wonderful voice – they should have had her do both. you can’t have love for the country and screw up the song so many times. she’s really a has-been

she did her best and she did it well.
singers are humans and they do make oopsies just like the rest of us.
i’m a Christina fan as you can plainly tell and i’m not gonna turn my back on her just ’cause of a slight mistake she made during this performance.

    Ravynwolfe Says:

She knows the words. She got mixed up temporarily. It happens. It happens to everyone. Everyone that makes a comment about her flub negatively has to look at themselves. She’s a good singer, she got up in front of millions of people (in the stadium and at home) and did her best…nerves can get to most people and all the things that can distract you at the superbowl. Give her a break. She’s human folks..being a celeb and making big bucks does not cause you to be unhurtable. Be kind.

    Alex Says:

So, she made a mistake. She still sounded Amazing! Not many Americans even know the words themselves.

    Jan, Denmark Says:

I am embarrassed on behalf of USA and the americans. You(r artisits) are embarrassing yourselves but not respecting and honoring your own NATIONAL ANTHEM! But by letting it be a tool for artists to twist and skew so it is totally unrecoginiseable is just embarrassing.

ONE time in Denmark a singer tried it… she was booed off the field, and tehn the crowd (as it is custom) proceeded to sing it correctly acapella!

USA have a song with the potential for awesomenedd, but untill you use it as a tool to promote artists… it will fail.

Did she not learn the lyrics in grade school? She is my favorite female vocalist, but I did not like her rendition in the way she sang it. Also, she doesn’t look as appealing as she used to. What is up with her hair being beyond blonde?!

    Adam Says:

Should’ve had two Glee girls last night: Lea Michele to do America the Beautiful, and Amber Riley to do the National Anthem. Amber sounds like Christina at times, has sang it twice, and has not even messed it up.

    Adam Says:

@smshct: To top it off, they’ll have her be outclassed by Lea Michele.

    Linda Camp Says:

That was so totally disrespectful. We are at war and she did not even take the time to do her homework, practice, and do it right. I had 3 students of mine who nailed that presentation at a 3d rate baseball game. No respect, she should hang her head in shame. Nerves? No way, she is supposed to be a professional and well paid, I might add. Could we maybe go back to a traditional singing and also a try-out? No excuse for this one, no excuse.

How many great singers sings it this live and mess up? None as big as Christina. I mean, only all in America was watching and then the next hour on youtube…

There is NO EXCUSE for ******** up the National Anthem as bad as Christina Aguilera did, she forgot an entire part of it.
I agree this Superbowl was very lame, well except for Sam Elliott announcing the teams, and that VOICE, I just love him, he still looks GOOD!

    Shelley Says:

What an honor for her to sing, I would like to see the ones who can so easily give her such negative feedback get up there in front of millions of people and not get nervous and sing perfect. We have more to worry about then her innoncent mistake of singing the national anthem a lyric wrong!!! Good for you Christine you sing awesome and I enjoyed hearing you !

Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan Says:

African-American slaves fought during the Civil War and some even during the war for Independence. They are part of the fabric of this country. “Negro” spirituals sum up the pain, glory and the past of American history. So the national anthem can be sung in gospel just like it would be ok to sing it in a Cherokee style melody – these two groups are the backbone of really hard labor in America – the Native Americans and African-Americans. SO the issue is not gospel BUT the issue is Christina Aguilera pretending her fake plastic self has the heart and soul to sing such deep notes. I mean Jimmi Hendrix did an instrumental of the national anthem and it is probably the greatest rendition of any anthem I have ever heard. You can interpret an anthem but do it with heart, talent and soul not this HOT MESS. She is full of herself and may this be her lesson that she needs a reality check.

    JB2O2 Says:

I would have to agree that she has talent but of all songs to mess up, this is the worst. Everyone should know this song. She tried to change the whole style of the National Anthem. She cared more about her own “sound” then the meaning of the song she was singing. It had nothing to do with being “nervous”. She got carried away.
