Christina Aguilera Responds to National Anthem Fumble

Christina Aguilera has responded to the discussion over her fumble of the lyrics to the National Anthem during her performance at the Super Bowl on Sunday (February 6).

WATCH: Christina Aguilera perform the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV

” I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place,” Christina shared in a statement to “I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”

Instead of singing the line “o’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” Christina sang “what so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming.”

WHAT DID YOU THINK of Christina’s National Anthem performance?

I like Christina, but there is no excuse to not prepare yourself for this type of event and failing to sing the National Anthem correcting in front of millions of people around the world. No excuse. There is sheet music, ya know. This isnt the end of the world but I do think at all national events as Americans we need to require all musicians to meet with professionals and get some training before they try and inflict us all with these getto-pop variations of our national anthem. People are not impressed.

I haven’t seen this performance, nor do I intend to. I have no comment re: her performance; however, I do have to comment on dumb people. For someone to come on and trash talk about someone has no validity ESPECIALLY if an idiot can’t even spell. Poor America, you failed giving the basic education to laverdaduele. Time to sing out, I mean, sign out.

Our national anthem is very sacred to this country and should be treated with the utmost respect and reverence. Those that sing it should do so with the intent to do it proud and to honor those that created and paid the ultimate price to make this country what it is today. It’s great to hear performers put a little dazzle in it but ultimately you sing it correctly and know the words. Any famous person or celebrity that has accepted the honor to sing it should take it seriously and rehearse it. To give the excuse that she was nervous is not enough. She had performed a million times in front of millions of people in different venues to have gotten this one correct. But I really think it’s a tragedy to think that there are several Americans that don’t know the words themselves. Those that have responded to this as no big deal should really think about moving. Our national anthem is symbolic to all the men and women throughout our history that gave their life to allow our freedom and that is a big deal. You stand up, take your hat off, stop talking and give honor when this song is played. You should get goosebumps and think about this great country when you heart the national anthem and if you don’t know the words yourself google it.

  • Jm

Sfc Army Ret has it exactly right.

b*tch, just apologize! if that was me, my statement would’ve been, “To the American people: i apologize from the bottom of my heart. I’ve been singing the national anthem since I was 7 and this is the first time this has happened to me. It’s easy to lose yourself in such a surreal moment and for that, I apologize.”

NOT “oh i had so much love, hope you felt it.” Too bad the audience saw your LACK of emotion behind it.

  • Chanelle

Well, I though it was good, everyone should just chill coz if that was you, you’d expect for people to forgive you & not want everyone to be hating so if yah comments are mean than just keep it to yah self ! Poor girl feels bad enough so just stop with the hatrid coz ya’ll probably can’t even sing anyways & the way everyone’s going on about it… atleast she kept singing something rather than stopping ! ! !

  • Joey

It is absolutely astounding to me that the people who sing our national anthem DON’T know any better than to sing it the way it was origionally intended. These days apparently they all seem to think singing the anthem is a time for them to show off, this is what really gets to me. How embarrassing! They don’t know any better and somehow the people responsible for hiring these turds don’t seem to know any better either??? I bet i’m not alone in saying that I would rather hear a military band play the national anthem while the fans sing along as opposed to what we continually have to suffer through with these turds who can’t even get the lyric right. I knew this would happen again, I knew it and when I heard the first three seconds of her I had to turn the channel. That was it! I can’t be the only one who is really pissed that this problem continues on and on without anybody putting a stop to it. Tell these people to sing the anthem correctly, NOT their own way showing off and making a gospel show tune out of it.

  • laverdadduele

@Carlitos: @Danny: A typo doesn’t make anyone an idiot or dumb. I’m sure we all have at some point, even YOU. However, how much of an idiot are you for taking the time to comment and make a big deal out of it? Get a life and most importantly get over yourself.

  • melissa asherman

I like her but I don’t consider myself a fan or anything but… People need to get over about the whole Christina Aguilera thing on the superbowl. She messed up a line, she didn’t kill anyone! It was a mistake and she was nervous! You try singing on an important night in front of millions… umm you’d probably forget a line too!

  • Sfc Army Ret

Those of you that see nothing wrong with this are also the ones that have done nothing for this country. You haven’t served in the military, never saw combat, never bled, sweat or cried because you lost a comrade that served next to you. Probably just go through life without a clue of what it takes to make this country great. Probably take what you have for granted and will never make a sacrifice for this country. Probably don’t know the words to the”pledge of allegiance”. Probably still won’t get it after reading what people write about this snafu. But unfortunately that is what makes this country great….the right for people to go through life ignorant of the sacrifices that were made for you to live that way.

Christina sang Our nation’s anthem like any superstar with a good voice would have. If you have ever seen an arrangement for this song you will see that no particular speed is indicated; so in a sense, the entire song is up for interpretaion. Christina’s choice to sing the song slowly to showcase her voice was refreshing for that fact that nobody has heard anything from her for years. Could it have been better? Sure Should she have remembered the lyrics? Yes.

Next case. I am an aspiring actor, and to this day I have never been able to recite my lines verbatim. The real talent is when you realize that mistake and act like it didn’t happen. Don’t go back and try to fix it, don’t dwell on the past. Sure she messed up the words of the National Anthem, but the energy she was putting out showed how much she does love this country! You can’t fake singing with emotion, it just doesn’t happen. Many people are getting mad at her for forgetting one line out of the song, but I think Francis Scott Key would be pretty sad to hear most Americans don’t even know the last 3 verses.

Finally I leave you with a little bit of knowledge. The Star Spangled Banner was origionally a poem written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key about what he saw from an enamy ship just outside of Fort McHenrey. This “song” didn’t become our nation’s anthem until March 3, 1931. pretty neat stuff right? Oh yeah, and did I mention, the Star Spangled Banner stole the melody of a famouse English drinking song? Tying that into my first paragraph, English dringking songs have no tempo… That means the anthem has no set tempo, so quit complaining!

  • Joey

To the “WHATEVER” crowd, If you don’t know any better either, don’t pass this off as if it were no big deal or as if you speak for the rest of us, YOU DON’T and IT IS! That is precisely what is wrong with this country, there is an ilk of people in this country who seem to have adopted this attitude of complacency and mediocrity as if it destroying the anthem were ok. You don’t speak for me and you never will! I am going to do everything in my power in the music business to put a stop to this continual disgrace of our national anthem by the “grammy” award winning crowd who can’t seem to get it right. That includes the morons who continue to pick these people without telling them to please “sing the anthem the way it was written” NOT some jive gospell version as if it were a church choir audition!

  • meg

If it was another country’s national anthem that she messed up I can understand people being pissed but I figure you’re allowed to mess up your own from time to time…
Hell i mess up the words on ours (the Canadian one) sometimes because I’ll randomly switch between English and French…

  • R

She ruined the song and she looked like a mess.

  • Joey

NO WAY, Don’t just push this aside, it is important to understand that our national anthem already has a MELODY and LYRIC and they need to sing it the way it was intended. It’s a march and has a certain cadence which makes it so powerful. Don’t you understand WHY this is so important??? To have to suffer through watching our national anthem get shredded by some award winning hack is more than I can handle, I have to turn the channel. I can’t even watch it! Whitney Houston did an amazing version and she’s a rare example who actually made her version work. It was really well done but most of them ruin it. This has happened too many times and needs to be addressed. It sets the wrong example and is a national embarrassement for the rest of the world to see.

  • XtinaFanForever

haters get a life ,, Christina is still amazing, still beautiful and dirrty and i love her!!

  • Grandma of Four

Christina has an amazing voice! I think if she had chosen to just sing the National Anthem correctly instead of adding all the embellishments, she would not have lost her place. Whitney Houston’s version was spot on…studio or not, it was appropriately sung and still to this day sends chills….absolutely breathtaking! Christina will get other chances to sing our anthem and I hope she will choose to present it correctly. She can still hit those high notes and send the crowd into a frenzy with a straight up version! :-)

  • ina

Should have been Jessica Simpson she always does the anthem justice

  • Say

I love all this, “She didn’t know what the hell she was singning, but, by God, she meant it!!”

Could you see when they panned over the troops serving overseas, and they’re like, “f**k me, I’m risking my lfe for this?”

  • spadavich

She did a terrible job throughout the whole deal. Sing it the way it was written..she screamed through it….and how do you screw up the words of the National anthem?

  • smshct

she didn’t even have the good sense to offer an apology, just some lame excuse of being caught up in the moment….I’ve heard children do it with more class and intonation….SNL will have a field day with this

  • Soul Fly

My thoughts exactly…people are really harsh…

  • Sheri

With the amount of money they were paying her, she should have been flawless!! This wasn’t some high school production … it was the Super Bowl for goodness sake. As a professional, this really was inexcusable. She’s probably had many weeks to prepare so there really are no excuses.

  • Anthony

The only worse performance of the National Anthem was Rosanne Barr’s version in 90 before the Padres-Reds game. But this was a very close 2nd. It is a beautiful song, I wish people would just sing it like it was supposed to be sung and not take any artistic liberties with it.

  • Janet Martin

Christina messing up the National Anthem is like defacing the American Flag, what an idiot she is, sounds like her ego got in the way of her need to prepare herself.

  • AHEM

Seriously “caught in the moment” Although most of us are taught this song at such as young age, I’m sure she has heard this song at some point in her life. She just made a total fool of herself.

How can you get your national Anthem. A singer is chosen based on professionalism to “NOT” get caught in the moment. crying and getting emotional would be okay, but forgetting the words… She should have done som research.

Maybe if she didn’t butcher the song so much and sing notes that are no where on the music sheets she might have remembered where she was in the song. I fully understand want croneing is but keep it to your personal music, and sing the Anthem how it was written.

Nice work! Whitney was perfect and so was Beyonce. She also had trouble with that last high note…. She’ll never be able to take this one back. people will always look back and say “oh yeah Christina, she messed up the words”

  • Carly

Let’s face it Christina messed up, its not about getting caught up in the moment, you should know the words you idiot, hide your face in SHAME!!!!!! And it looks like we know who ate all the pies……

  • wejosjf.al1

Um Jared the way I learned the song is “what so proudly we hailed” not ‘watched’.

  • sc0322

GOOD JOB! NOT! Horrible! There’s only one version not a Christina super bowl version. To solve the problem in the future let some one sing the song who it actully means something to. A choir member from one of the branches of service. If this was the fist time some start actually messed the song up or sing it terrible bad it might could be over looked but it has happend before and will again.

  • B

You know people are ready to crucify over this, but you can tell she was in the moment and felt honored to be there and that most AMERICANS DON’T know the anthem because no one even recognized the mishap until some nerd pointed it out. She was strong and kept going which Im sure others would have crumbled, stopped and restarted the line, or made some horrific face to let ppl know they messed up. She did beautifully and unlike most singers, she didn’t lip sing like J-hud, or faith hill and she did it acapella, because if she had music or a band behind her ppl really wouldn’t have noticed!! If patriotism hinges on this song then why the hell are we playing it before sporting events??!!! So she just gave all the haters something else to feed on, she has to be one of the most hated ppl out there. So much for anti-bullying because celebrities aren’t human so we can crap all over them to make ourselves feel better and that’s okay. I swear we have to be the most judgemental group of ppl, yet claim this is the “land of the free,” yeah only if you fit into some mold of perfect!! I mean how many times did you all have to watch the video and then google the lyrics to actually see where she flubbed? I bet about 98% had to!! It’s not that serious and that’s why you see so many other singers coming to her defense!

  • sc0322

@bruce: I agree with bruce! Vet here and that song means alot! next time can we get a service member to sing it! someone from one of the branches choirs might be a starting point or hold a competion something fun and memorable to a current service member. It can be done trust me!

  • sc0322

    So horrible!

  • melissa

she was terrible. the girl before her that did america the beautiful had a wonderful voice – they should have had her do both. you can’t have love for the country and screw up the song so many times. she’s really a has-been

  • s

    @Sheri: agree.

  • Ashley

she did her best and she did it well.
singers are humans and they do make oopsies just like the rest of us.
i’m a Christina fan as you can plainly tell and i’m not gonna turn my back on her just ’cause of a slight mistake she made during this performance.

  • Ravynwolfe

She knows the words. She got mixed up temporarily. It happens. It happens to everyone. Everyone that makes a comment about her flub negatively has to look at themselves. She’s a good singer, she got up in front of millions of people (in the stadium and at home) and did her best…nerves can get to most people and all the things that can distract you at the superbowl. Give her a break. She’s human folks..being a celeb and making big bucks does not cause you to be unhurtable. Be kind.

  • Alex

So, she made a mistake. She still sounded Amazing! Not many Americans even know the words themselves.

  • Jan, Denmark

I am embarrassed on behalf of USA and the americans. You(r artisits) are embarrassing yourselves but not respecting and honoring your own NATIONAL ANTHEM! But by letting it be a tool for artists to twist and skew so it is totally unrecoginiseable is just embarrassing.

ONE time in Denmark a singer tried it… she was booed off the field, and tehn the crowd (as it is custom) proceeded to sing it correctly acapella!

USA have a song with the potential for awesomenedd, but untill you use it as a tool to promote artists… it will fail.

  • rhonda

Love your idea, hope someone who runs the Superbowl reads comments online.

  • Sweets

Did she not learn the lyrics in grade school? She is my favorite female vocalist, but I did not like her rendition in the way she sang it. Also, she doesn’t look as appealing as she used to. What is up with her hair being beyond blonde?!

  • Adam

Should’ve had two Glee girls last night: Lea Michele to do America the Beautiful, and Amber Riley to do the National Anthem. Amber sounds like Christina at times, has sang it twice, and has not even messed it up.

  • Adam

@smshct: To top it off, they’ll have her be outclassed by Lea Michele.

  • America

Yes I still feel it. Luv ya
