Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher -- FIRST LOOK

Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher -- FIRST LOOK

Scope out this first look of Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher from the upcoming biopic The Iron Lady. Uncanny!

“The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge,” Meryl says. “I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervor and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses – I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own!”

The Iron Lady tells the compelling story of Margaret Thatcher, a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and intimate portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman.

Meryl is an extraordinary, phenomenal actress. I’m sure she’ll make a great job.

# 2

And she will be incredible as usual!!!
Give her the damn oscar!

# 3

Why Meryl Streep is playing this horror of a woman is beyond me. She doesn’t deserve any kind of praise for her career and she was the worst prime minister in British history. There was a reason she was called the iron lady you know and it wasn’t anything to do with strength of character. This woman had absolutely no heart and cared nothing for the British people, not to even mention the miners…

# 5

Is there nothing this woman can’t do?

@david60:

I totally agree with you, I cant believe she actually took this role on.

This film will no doubt be an americanised view of what the thatcher era was and will most probably gloss over the misery and poverty of the mining population in Britain.

If anything this will set out to be a soppy and uninformed melodrama.

I’m still reeling over the stupid William and Kate biopic america is doing, that’s likely to be ridiculous also.

Scarily alike. I think this will be Meryl’s 3rd Oscar.

@david60:

I also agree. Someone as good as Meryl shouldn’t play such an awful woman. Meryl is loveable and Thatcher doesn’t deserve to have empathy. But nevertheless, Meryl will be great.

Meryl Streep is an amazing actress & I agree with Tom, Oscar #3 coming up.

Britain will throw a celebration when she kicks the bucket (Thatcher, not Streep).

Woman in photo same in pic

That loathesome woman. I will dance when she drops dead I just hope it is a painful one. She closed down everything that was about caring, community and people and opened up greed for the greedy. Her motto ‘greed for self is good’. Nasty piece of work. Meryl obviously doesn’t understand the extent that this creature had on the UK and poor countries around the world. She oppressed the powerless and gave more power to the already powerful.

And here comes Mery’ls 17th oscar nom and her 3rd win :D

The only reason I would watch this film is to see how good Meryl is. I wonder if it will do well in the UK?

Meryl is great, the other is a *****

Maryl Streep can play anyone. Bet she’ll make a fantastic Margaret Thatcher.

I wonder who will play Sir Gordon Reece, her Svengali, who taught her how to speak (lower voice), how to do her hair, and how to appear like a normal housewife. She followed his advice to the letter and it got her elected. In return he got made a “Sir”. He flunked out of Cambridge however, since he spent all his time there playing bridge and socializing.

She certainly looks the part and she’s a very good actress. I won’t hate on a movie that I haven’t seen. It’s senseless to say how the movie will address Thatcher’s life and time in office at this stage.
-
Since the movie is expected to be entertainment rather than a documentary, you get what you get. If I wanted a strict history lesson I’d watch a documentary or read a book.
-
This is just the type of role the she needs. Roles about sweet lovable women are a dime a dozen; this is one that she can really dig into; one that requires her to dig deep into herself. In other words, it’s the type of role that serious actors choose to challenge themselves.
-
This isn’t going to be an easy role for Streep, but she’s always managed to step up to the plate when a great performance is needed. I guarantee she won’t take this one lightly.

Margaret Thatcher milk snatcher!

@Louise:

Actually Louise this is a UK production. So whatever comes out of it will a British rendering.

She is simply one of the greatest artist of our time, if not the greatest.

Oh God, yet again poor people hating on Lady Thatcher. Go and make something out of yourselves, please be kind.

hope these horrible hollyweird types don’t do a hatchet job on this great woman. have always admired streeps work but when these hollyweird types do political people they seem to lose their minds

Excuse me… Meryl Streep could play Batman and be the right choice. She’s perfection. Whether she’s divorcing Kramer, whether she’s wearing Prada. Don’t even get me started on “Sophie’s choice”
