OlderNatalie Portman: Art Is Critical to the Soul
Natalie Portman arrives at LAX to catch a departing flight on Monday (February 7) in Los Angeles.
Earlier in the day, the 29-year-old Black Swan star attended the Academy Awards nominations luncheon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Natalie recently shared that, at one point in her career, she contemplated whether acting was right for her.
“There were moments when I questioned it, when I was thinking, ‘What is the purpose of this in our world? Is it as meaningful as being a doctor, being a teacher, or things that I think of as such noble professions?’ But I think I’ve really reconciled myself with that, and I think art is not only important but critical to the soul of a human and the soul of a community,” she told Backstage.com.
“Not to be self-important about what I do, but I’ve found a lot of meaning in it,” she added.
“There really is something ridiculous about dressing up and pretending to be someone else,” she said. “But I think it’s wonderful to do something in life that’s a little bit silly.”

BTW, I’m sure she would do it if she wasn’t paid millions. She’s a true actress. She works on a lot of independent films – like Black Swan where I’m sure she didn’t earn millons.

Lexy, read somewhere that she was paid in the 100s of K for Black Swan. Her motivation must have really been the film, not the money. She could have earned many times the amount for a lot less work. Seems like she is still being run around like mad for Black Swan. My guess is she’s off to London for BAFTA.

That’s pretty amazing that she actually considered something like this.. what good acting does for the world. I don’t think I’ve ever heard an actor talk like that. I’m glad she came to the conclusion she did, though!
She is so PRETENTIOUS! All she ever talks about is herself, how smart she is, how beautiful, how educated, blah blah blah… she acts above everyone?? And she thinks she’s an artist? Bish, please… you get handed a piece of paper, you say the words infront of a camera, you get paid millions, you go home……. hahah artist…. acting is saying words other people have wrote for you… eughhhh
if you have to ask yourself whether art is as worthwhile as anything else — being a doctor or teacher — you are NOT an artist
i just can’t bring myself to like her. there’s something that’s really irksome about her and i tend to agree with sugababe and ***.
I use to think she was so smart. But apparently she’s not smart where it counts because by all accounts her fiance is an opportunist and a cad. This brings up the age old question: Book smarts or street smarts?

I clearly enjoy Natalie Portman’s acting and I like the fact she questions the utility of her job for other people.
I’m convinced very few other actors and actresses do ever wonder what is the point of they do .
Especially when they get paid fortunes in Hollywood, they should indeed ALL ask themselves if they deserve so much money and if they help making this world a better place.

However, I disagree with Miss Portman’s answers to her self-questioning.
First of all, it is very pretentious to call herself an “ARTIST”.
If she can define what is an artist and who deserves to be called so,
she should quickly write a book about it.

She is only a VERY LUCKY starlet just like all acting people in Hollywood. They are show-biz people who were born with silver spoons in their mouths and who had the good connexions to be offered jobs other people could do just as well.

She can keep fooling herself with any sort of meaning she finds in her job. The only credit we can give her is to use her brain even if it’s the wrong way.

@ carrie – she may be more pregnant, or she may be just gaining more weight than we expected. I was always one of those naturally thin women everyone thought was anorexic, in fact when I first found out I was pregnant I was worried I would never be able to gain enough weight – but I ended up gaining almost 60lb!
Natalie’s a very talented actress, she’s always been a great actress though, directly after she did Leon/The Professional (she was very impressive as a child actor here) she was handed every teen movie script lead you can think of but she said “no” and opted to do projects like Heat and Beautiful Girls, which was a risk, but a smart choice. Star Wars has allowed her to do basically whatever she wants really, because her popularity went through the roof after those. I think she’s right though, movies, acting, art, bring a sense of humanity to the world, a sense of a great story or a shared experience. She’s said this before too though in many interviews. As an artist/writer myself I agree with her statement.
Uhh another bad outfit… and she should really start wearing a bra!

To be fair, there is a difference between reciting the words “I love you” and just reading them off a page to someone while the camera is rolling and being present in the moment and making the viewers actually believe it is real. Being an actor, at least a good actor, not the Megan Fox type where all you do is just run around in skimpy outfits and just scream, is a lot harder than it looks to other people. I don’t mind Natalie Portman that much–at least she’s not Kim Kardashian.
