From the old thread,, and KDHT noted that Hanson directed LA Confidential, so this could be a warm up for White Jazz in terms of working together.

EXCLUSIVE: Gerard Butler has been set to star in Mavericks, the Curtis Hanson-directed fact-based drama for Walden Media. The film is based on the true story of Santa Cruz surf phenom Jay Moriarity and his quest to ride the treacherous Northern California breaks known as Mavericks, where winter swells create waves the size of five-story buildings. Butler will play Rick “Frosty” Hesson, the mentor who trained Moriarity for over a year and forged a close relationship with the surfer in the process. Though Moriarity survived those impossible waves, he died at 22 in a diving accident. But he remains an inspiration to surfers, who coined the phrase “Live like Jay.”

Hanson, who just directed the HBO financial crisis drama Too Big To Fail, is directing a script by Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper. Hanson is searching for a young actor to play Moriarity. Butler, who recently starred for director Marc Forster in Machine Gun Preacher and the Ralph Fiennes-directed Coriolanus, will hit the surf for Mavericks after he completes Playing The Field. That Gabriele Muccino-directed film is Shampoo set in the world of pee wee soccer, where a philandering former pro soccer player tries to reunite with his family by coaching his son’s team, only to put himself in dangerous scoring position with a gaggle of beautiful soccer moms. Butler is exec producing Mavericks with Alan Siegel, and Hanson, Hooper and Jim Meenaghan are producing. Michael Bostick and Amanda Morgan Palmer are overseeing for Walden. Lakeshore Entertainment is selling foreign on the film, which will begin shooting in October. Butler’s repped by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment. UTA reps.

Does anyone know if this will be released hot on the heels of PTF? We could have a double-header in the box office toilet… Or maybe a sweep at the Razzies. Damn it Butler… space the crap out a little please!!!

As I said in the last thread, Gerard will show his abs in at least 50% of the movie and that’s a bonus in my book.

    KDHT Says:

@Manny: It doesn’t sound like crap to me. I think it’s interesting. And, as I said Hanson directed LA Confidential so it may be the beginning of another collaboration. I would assume the young actor they cast will be the main character of the film, with Gerry in a lesser role and producing.

    Raichill Says:

    He’s looking a bit craggy.

    Manny Says:

So do we call him Frodhi or Brosty? LA Confidential was marvelous I agree, but Hansen has directed just a few movies since 1997…
    Lucky You
    In Her Shoes
    8 Mile
    Wonder Boys
None of which were as inspiring or successful from a critical point of view as LA Confidential.
On the bright side, it will probably be head and shoulders above Surfer Dude. :)

    stella Says:

    Hanson also directed 8 Mile.

It’ll be interesting to see if they cast a real surfer in the role or a real actor who will have to learn to surf with Gerry.

    Manny Says:

Too bad Keanu Reeves doesn’t have a son that could play the young to-be-mentored surfer. The dialect would be perfect. :P
Speaking of dialect, OMG, what will Butler sound like??????????

    xyzee Says:

@Raichill: If he’s craggy, craggy is my new favorite thing.

So, is he in Berlin as we speak? The original Mavericks announcement came from Berlin which is kind of odd I think if he ins’t there already.

Great news for Ralph and Gerry that Weinstein is going to push Coriolanus. I can’t wait to hear what people say about the film after it’s shown. I think I read its showings are completely sold out in Berlin. It only cost $10 million to make so it shouldn’t take much to turn a profit – even if it is Shakespeare.

The paps could give two sh/ts about this non-entity. He is NOT Kim Kardashian, Robert Pattinson or Justin Bieber. Its his PR people and management that are bombarding the media with pics and planted stories and blurbs – and they were doing that back before he even filmed “Dear Frankie”. Gerard Butler generates lots of hits on a gossip site but that does not translate into movie ticket and magazine copy sales.
He’s a B-list celebrity – at best. Let’s not confuse the ideals of a rabid middle-aged female fan base with the rest of the population.

    Goody Says:

A surfer movie.. I would never have guessed. Don’t know what to expect and just hope the script is good. Sounds like he is in a co-star or even supporting role. He is not going the big budget big box office route; instead he is choosing the smaller specific theme related projects. 2011 is the sport related year for him. 2010 was action packed. What is 2012 to bring? He really is beating to his own drummers. Good for him to try different things.

  23. 23
    flagstaff Says:

@j manganiello: So Kim K a A-lister in your eyes. Ok that says a lot. EVERY actor/actress has his/her PR plant stories. It’s part of the Hollywood game. Are you too naive to know that? Why all of a sudden Jen Aniston is everywhere these last couple of days? Oh ya, a movie of hers is coming up.

    clive owen Says:

He really does. But that’s what happens when you’re actually nearing 50 and partying like you’re 25.

C’mon Fangurlz, ya’ll know damned well that his press agent shaved ten years off his age when he came to Hollywood.

  25. 25
    lisar Says:

@sue: He was thinking that he would work with a director he liked again.

This doesn’t have a ring of a hit film to it unless they get a hot new face or world famous surfer to play the Jay. Gerard is in the second banana role.

Hansen’s career has been on the downslide and it looks like Gerard’s is too. At least there is always a way to keep making a good living in roles that aren’t very big at the box office.

Does anyone know if this is Gerard’s company producing and he hired Hansen or if Hansen hired him?
