Billy Ray Cyrus Talks Hannah Montana, End of Marriage

Billy Ray Cyrus reflects on parenting, his split from wife Tish Cyrus, and the entertainment industry in this new feature in GQ magazine (with Channing Tatum on the cover).

Here’s what the 49-year-old entertainer and father of Miley Cyrus had to share:

On wishing he had been more of a parent and less of a friend: “How many interviews did I give and say, ‘You know what’s important between me and Miley is I try to be a friend to my kids’? I said it a lot. And sometimes I would even read other parents might say, ‘You don’t need to be a friend, you need to be a parent.’ Well, I’m the first guy to say to them right now: You were right. I should have been a better parent. I should have said, ‘Enough is enough—it’s getting dangerous and somebody’s going to get hurt.’ I should have, but I didn’t. Honestly, I didn’t know the ball was out of bounds until it was way up in the stands somewhere.”

On opting not to attend Miley’s 18th birthday party: “You know why I didn’t go? Because they were having it in a bar. It was wrong. It was for 21 years old and up.”

On hiding his true feelings while he shot Hannah Montana: “Season four, it was a disaster. I was going to work every single day knowing that my family had fallen apart, but yet I had to sit in front of that camera. I look back and I go, How did I ever make it through that? I must be a better actor than I thought.”

On rumors that the family profited from Miley’s work: “For the record, to set it straight, I want to tell you: I’ve never made a dime off of Miley. You got a lot of people have made percentages off of her. I’m proud to say to this day I’ve never made one commissioned dollar, or dime, off of my daughter.”

On being scared for his daughter: “I’m scared for her. She’s got a lot of people around her that’s putting her in a great deal of danger. I know she’s 18, but I still feel like as her daddy I’d like to try to help. Take care of her just a little bit, to at least get her out of danger. I want to get her sheltered from the storm. Stop the insanity just for a minute.”

Billy Ray Cyrus is a tool. Of course, Miley out of his control. Instead of getting his hair highlighted at the salon or living out of her fame, he should have stepped in and be a father. Newsflash for him, it’s too late!

well. at least he is honest and realizes as well as admits he made mistakes.
others might try and front like everything is ok.
it’s cool that he is being real.

hey dina lohan, take a look at the billy ray cyrus playbook!

no doubt this is a mix of passive parenting on part of billy ray, but he’s right, once you step into the hollywood arena it’s like being taken over by a pack of hungry wolves. miley made disney HUGE cash, and her handlers, anyone that makes a profit off of her will throw whomever under the bus for damage control, so that she keeps making those numbers. i think you can totally see it, their chemistry in the first 1-2 seasons of the show when the waters were still calm. it was a very natural father/daughter relationship and towards the end of the show it felt very polarizing. billy ray could be a better father, but take one look at tish cyrus and you understand who is influencing miley. everyone says billy ray made money off of miley, but i believe its TISH making money off of miley. she’s executive producer, business manager, everything for miley. she’s behind the scenes on every photo shoot, every concert, egging her on. take one look at that orange, plastic surgery addicted woman who still thinks its the 80′s and shes a roadgroup rock groupie teen. she’s all about being a best friend to her kid, living vicariously through her youth and fame, and letting that girl run amock. yes, miley’s still a GIRL. just because you’re 18 doesn’t mean you’re automatically an adult, she still has room to grow. trust, once miley’s all burned-out this is going to be like a dina-michael lohan blame game situation. i hate to judge a book by its cover but its absolutely apparent just by looking at tish cyrus how money-fame hungry she is.

@mailey:

i agree – it would be so easy for him to just make up excuse after excuse, but he’s telling it like it is. He made numerous mistakes, and he’s learnt from them and he’s admitting all of them which is never easy. I actually feel sorry for the guy – he seems like a nice guy who (mostly) has his head properly on his shoulders, he just got a bit lost and too caught up in everything to see anything objectively until now when it’s too late. Normally i don’t like it when people spill details about their personal lives to the press but with Billy Ray it seems like this is genuinely his only way to reach out to Miley.
I can totally see him being blocked access to her, so of course he’s feeling frustrated because he genuinely wants the best for her.
Now Miley is 18 and her trashy behaviour is now being enabled by her classless, famewhore mother.
I feel sorry for Billy Ray, but i can’t wait to see that little sleazebag Miley and her mother crash and burn until everyone knows them for what they are.

Too little too late, dude! Go have a chat with your busy body daughter and stop beating yourself up.

I can’t say I have ever been a fan of Miley, her music, or Hannah Montana but I have to admit that reading this article made me incredibly sad for Billy Ray and I honestly hope everything works out.

He loved his daughters spotlights too much to be the parent he craves he should have been. regrets always come toooo late.

I think he was in denial. This was his daughter, his baby, and perfect in his eyes. I think he had some rude awakenings. And I think Miley lied to him about her activities, but because she was his daughter he was blind to her activities. A lot of parents are.
I’m sure she is going to continue to cause him heartache. Miley is not terribly mature in her choices and she will continue to hurt him most likely.
Don’t know much about Billy, Miley or Tish–just based on a few things I’ve read, but if Tish is enabling her, then maybe she and Dina should get together and do a reality show and leave their daughters alone.

@Kaz simply Amaazingg !!!!!!!!: If you wanna talk french, do it correctly then. Please.

There are no winners in this situation (Billy, Miley, Tish, the other kids), yet there is no end to the parents who would give anything to thrust their kids in the exact same position. Too many people would allow their kids a shot at that fame and fortune. It almost never, ever works out for the kids. There is one decent story for every 100 bad ones.

I think Michael Lohan – I mean Billy ray should stop talking to the mags and – GO TALK TO HIS DAUGHTER INSTEAD…

He poses for this photo looking like a bad ass teenager himself. He should have worried at the Vanity Fair shoot & the Teen Awards show where she pole danced when she was a MINOR. He made MONEY$$$ on the Disney show for HIMSELF. He did not complain until she became 18 and he lost control. He is a phony and a JERK

Alexandra @ 02/15/2011 at 5:26 pm

@mikado: The thing is, he can’t speak any language properly apart from gibberish.

Wow, hope this doesn’t turn into a Michael/Lindsay thing. He needs to talk to Miley.

@Mileyfan88:

jared left out some excerpts, this is from zimbio.com
“Every time the train went off the track… her people, or as they say in today’s news, her handlers, every time they’d put the blame on me… I took it because I’m her daddy… OK, nail me to the cross.
Billy Ray — who is currently in the process of divorcing Miley’s mother Tish Cyrus — also revealed he avoided the actress’ 18th birthday party because he didn’t want to be blamed for the fact it was held at Los Angeles bar Trousdale, even though she is three years under the legal age for drinking alcohol in the US.
He explained in an interview with GQ magazine: “You know why I didn’t go? Because they were having it in a bar. It was wrong. It was for 21 years old and up… all them people, they all wanted me to fly out so that then when all the bad press came they could say, ‘Daddy ENDORSED this stuff.’ I started realizing I”M BEING USED.

i think its fair for him to address all the bad publicity he’s received, to admit his mistakes and let people know he’s concerned. he obviously felt he was being used and misrepresented. he’s just trying to bring balance to the coverage.

Trashy Behaviour … You’re using a lot of big words people ! She’s an 18 rich talented and beautiful year old girl ! She is just making mistakes like we all have to and enjoying life ! Just because he doesn’t approves what she does doesn’t mean he has to ‘ trash ‘ her or send a message to her via a magazine ! And as for the money i think he had made profit of Miley i mean they all did except maybe her big brother but all her friend and family did at some point , because without HER , they’d be nothing , i mean Billy Ray was famous once upon a time , and as soon as his daughter came on the scene who is by her side ? There’s toon of parents who raised there child without being constantly in the light ! I have never seen the Fannings parents , or Biebers or Chloe Moretzs or Taylor Momsens and i can go on and on !

Go and make amends with Miley before it is too late. Instead of talking to GQ he should be talking to Miley. But if I were Miley I dont think I would be talking to him right now
