Beyonce: African-Inspired L'Officiel Photo Shoot!

Beyonce strikes a pose in an animal-print jacket and face paint for L’Officiel‘s March issue.

The French fashion magazine featured the 29-year-old entertainer in African-inspired dresses and jewelry by Gucci, Azzedine Alaia, Fendi, Pucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Rodarte, Dolce & Gabbana, Cartier, and Lanvin.

Beyonce‘s mom, Tina Knowles, also created a one-of-a-kind couture piece for the shoot!

The issue celebrates both African influences in fashion and L’Officiel‘s 90th anniversary.

there will be unnecessary drama about this.

why can someone dress up geisha inspired white face but not make the face dark? she’s black anyway, so it’s not like a white person is doing it and it COULD be racist.

other countries don’t necessarily see race like we do either.

just let it go, it’s art.

Wow, is all I can say! I love the black and white mini and that gorgeous headdress that looks Cleopatra inspired. My only complaint is, “why in the world did they paint her face black?”

And they couldn’t get a real African beauty instead of tossing chocolate on this woman because…….

can black people do black face??
    geez beyonce that’s pretty……um….weird

    Outraged. Says:

There is difference between doing a geisha make-up to pay homage to the japanese culture, and not taking a black model with instead a painted Beyonce!
Reminds me a french Vogue cover where a white model was painted in black instead of choosing one of the many gorgeous black models who are in the fashion business!

    BEAN Says:

This is actually quite offensive lol. Wtf why not use a real african woman? Celebrating Africa my backside.

why only paint her face black?? I think their poor taste in judgement would be easier to swallow if they’d painted her entire body. this looks like they want to make sure we all know “its ONLY MAKEUP, she’s NOT REALLY THAT DARK!!” Beyonce you are officially “Mahogany” – a object, vapid and clueless.

I’m really sick of all of these photo shoots that are suppossed to shock or be controversial. The blackface look is annoying and ridiculous.

@justsayin: probably because Geisha’s faces ARE painted. that’s the point. they paint their face white as an homage to an ideal beauty. like wearing blush, because we think flushed rosie cheeks are beautiful.
what she did is paint her entire face somebodies actual skin color.
    which is weird.

Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan Says:

Here is why it is offensive and shocking: thsi is an African-American woman who ONLY wears blonde weaves and a very European look. Now, she looks like she is mocking dark skin and Afrocentric look. Yes, a black person can be as offensive in blackface too if they do it without making some kind of commentary. This is random and purposeless. She sould be ashamed of herself. I hope she gets a lot of flack for this. Awful. Just awful.

  17. 17
    LMAO Says:

They maybe painted her face black because their issue is about AFRICANS not Afro-American ( Beyoncé ) , so yeah the two type aren’t the same toon of color so what ! She looks amazing !!

  18. 18
Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan Says:

WHat is OFFENSIVE is assuming that ALL Africans are one skin tone. This is backwards. Africa is a HUGE continent. There are South Africans, Somalis, Ethiopians, Ghanans who are many shades lighter than Beyonce or have different looks – some very Arabic, some Asian, some very Nubian and some mixed. Remember Africa was colonized as well. Also, genetically it is one of the most diverse places on earth. What is the point of this blotch of black paint on her face? What is her point? It is ridiculous particularly for a woman who spent her entire career in a Barbie blonde weave.

Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan Says:

Btw, were Iman, Lia Kebede, or many AFRICAN women not available????

    missy Says:

she’s already black, did she forget?

    Susan Says:

She’s black and paints her face black? Someone please explain because I thought black was black. I’m confused?? *scratches head*

  22. 22
    Mejay Says:

    @Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan:
I second that! Why not use real African women? Alek Wek, Liya Kebede, Agbani Darego, Oluchi Onweagba, Ajuma Nasenyana, and Iman to name a few.

  23. 23
    Just Wrong Says:

Beyonce, we get it that you want to be white. You pretend to be black and that’s okay. But why go so far as to offend your own race with black face? You’ve already gone through skin bleaching to go 3 shades lighter than your real complexion, but to put black face on after that is ridiculous. Yes, you are a money grubber which is one o the main reasons you married Jay-Z. Perfect match because he loves light women. After all he kicked Blu Cantrell to the side for you and he’s twice your age.

  24. 24
    Namerequired Says:

She either doesn’t care, easily lead or is just clueless. I mean really Black face and the editors need to come out of their tower and notice that their are plenty of black actress and models who they could have used for that spread. They could have used Beyonce’s band mates Michelle or Kelly.

Or just call the editor of Italian Vogue apparently she has the names/numbers of all the black models in a safe somewhere. Contact Essence pretty sure they would give you some names

And no blackface is never okay whether you or white, black or blue

  25. 25
    Black woman gone white Says:

Beyonce needs to stop acting white, with the hair bleach, skin beach, it states in your passport no matter how much you lighten yourself Beyonce that you are black and as a black woman thanks for giving the whites more power.

I guess this is what her new white BFF Gywenth loves this, look my black friend had a dark tan.
