Oh gosh. This shit already cause enough controversy. We dont need any more blogs picking it up.

there will be unnecessary drama about this.

  • justsayin

why can someone dress up geisha inspired white face but not make the face dark? she’s black anyway, so it’s not like a white person is doing it and it COULD be racist.

other countries don’t necessarily see race like we do either.

just let it go, it’s art.

  • Zoe Moon

Wow, is all I can say! I love the black and white mini and that gorgeous headdress that looks Cleopatra inspired. My only complaint is, “why in the world did they paint her face black?”

  • Domino

And they couldn’t get a real African beauty instead of tossing chocolate on this woman because…….

can black people do black face??
    geez beyonce that’s pretty……um….weird

  • Outraged.

    @justsayin:
There is difference between doing a geisha make-up to pay homage to the japanese culture, and not taking a black model with instead a painted Beyonce!
Reminds me a french Vogue cover where a white model was painted in black instead of choosing one of the many gorgeous black models who are in the fashion business!
    Shame.

  • BEAN

This is actually quite offensive lol. Wtf why not use a real african woman? Celebrating Africa my backside.

  • HAUTESTUFF

why only paint her face black?? I think their poor taste in judgement would be easier to swallow if they’d painted her entire body. this looks like they want to make sure we all know “its ONLY MAKEUP, she’s NOT REALLY THAT DARK!!” Beyonce you are officially “Mahogany” – a object, vapid and clueless.

I’m really sick of all of these photo shoots that are suppossed to shock or be controversial. The blackface look is annoying and ridiculous.

  • Female pattern baldness kills

@justsayin: probably because Geisha’s faces ARE painted. that’s the point. they paint their face white as an homage to an ideal beauty. like wearing blush, because we think flushed rosie cheeks are beautiful.
what she did is paint her entire face somebodies actual skin color.
    which is weird.

  • http://revloncosmetics.com Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan

Here is why it is offensive and shocking: thsi is an African-American woman who ONLY wears blonde weaves and a very European look. Now, she looks like she is mocking dark skin and Afrocentric look. Yes, a black person can be as offensive in blackface too if they do it without making some kind of commentary. This is random and purposeless. She sould be ashamed of herself. I hope she gets a lot of flack for this. Awful. Just awful.

  • LMAO

They maybe painted her face black because their issue is about AFRICANS not Afro-American ( Beyoncé ) , so yeah the two type aren’t the same toon of color so what ! She looks amazing !!

  • http://revloncosmetics.com Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan

WHat is OFFENSIVE is assuming that ALL Africans are one skin tone. This is backwards. Africa is a HUGE continent. There are South Africans, Somalis, Ethiopians, Ghanans who are many shades lighter than Beyonce or have different looks – some very Arabic, some Asian, some very Nubian and some mixed. Remember Africa was colonized as well. Also, genetically it is one of the most diverse places on earth. What is the point of this blotch of black paint on her face? What is her point? It is ridiculous particularly for a woman who spent her entire career in a Barbie blonde weave.

  • http://revloncosmetics.com Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan

Btw, were Iman, Lia Kebede, or many AFRICAN women not available????

  • missy

she’s already black, did she forget?

  • Susan

She’s black and paints her face black? Someone please explain because I thought black was black. I’m confused?? *scratches head*

  • Mejay

    @Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan:
I second that! Why not use real African women? Alek Wek, Liya Kebede, Agbani Darego, Oluchi Onweagba, Ajuma Nasenyana, and Iman to name a few.

  • Just Wrong

Beyonce, we get it that you want to be white. You pretend to be black and that’s okay. But why go so far as to offend your own race with black face? You’ve already gone through skin bleaching to go 3 shades lighter than your real complexion, but to put black face on after that is ridiculous. Yes, you are a money grubber which is one o the main reasons you married Jay-Z. Perfect match because he loves light women. After all he kicked Blu Cantrell to the side for you and he’s twice your age.

  • Namerequired

She either doesn’t care, easily lead or is just clueless. I mean really Black face and the editors need to come out of their tower and notice that their are plenty of black actress and models who they could have used for that spread. They could have used Beyonce’s band mates Michelle or Kelly.

Or just call the editor of Italian Vogue apparently she has the names/numbers of all the black models in a safe somewhere. Contact Essence pretty sure they would give you some names

And no blackface is never okay whether you or white, black or blue

  • Black woman gone white

Beyonce needs to stop acting white, with the hair bleach, skin beach, it states in your passport no matter how much you lighten yourself Beyonce that you are black and as a black woman thanks for giving the whites more power.

I guess this is what her new white BFF Gywenth loves this, look my black friend had a dark tan.

  • skin hate

she is the new MJ, he still died a black man BK just saying stop the bleaching and skin hate. This ad is BS and the Loreal should be boycott.

These pictures are Beautiful! Ppl this site over look the fact she dressed up as Diff Queens their just only see one photo smh the small minded ppl or should I say just dumb ppl. Look at what you ppl are saying just because her hair is blonde she wants to white? So if a White Person where’s their hair BLACK or Brown do they wanna be black? Like WTF you ppl sound so dumb. They u guys go far as to say she’s bleaching her skin like really where this woman has been light all her life look at her Mom look at her sister’s child. Black ppl will be the first one to turn on you fastest than any other race, the black race is filled with nothing but hate. You guys man at Beyonce because no matter what she does she dies it big and there’s nothing you can say about her like other pop stars. This Women has soo much success without being on every gossip magazine, being drunk falling out from the club shaving her head blad going to games in underwear talking about sex o tv with her boy friend putting his hands on her, Beyonce has stayed away from all that. This Woman is a Class Act, nothing you can or say with hurt her career if anything you just gave her career another boost without any music out. Beyonce Wins Again don’t you just hate it

  • Toya

All you do watch the damn video to understand the photoshoot. Gosh Hating Beyonce makes you ppl dumb as hell. I never seen one person that has so much power over ppl damn B.

What is there to understand about the photo shoot? They claim to be honoring the great Fela Kuti – and African progressive singer – who by the way was many shades lighter than Beyonce. Fela Kuti who sang against the misrepresentation of black people and this is how she honors him? What tribe in Africa has their people painting their faces dark brown? What does the face paint mean? Since Beyonce is Black, why can’t she honor Africa by just showing her own face without the paint? What distance is she creating between her and dark skin? I bet you she won’t show up at the Oscars with that dark paint on her face. No, at the Oscars, she will be back to her assimilated self – blondeweave, straight hair, and her light skin. She uses thatblack face paint to make a mockery of a great culture of people that she clearly knows nothing about. Beyonce: leave Africa to smart African women like Iman. Stick to grinding silly child. I was a fan now I am disappointed.

  • http://revloncosmetics.com Ms Barleo Gaga Pitt Fan

Toya: white women tan sometimes to give themselves a glow then they go back to their white skin. Also when was the last time you saw a white woman with a kinky hair weave? Beyonce on the other hand HAS NEVER shown up on a show, concert, photo shoot, etc without a blonde weave emulating a very Eurocentric look. It is particularly problematic because black people are aware how much their own look is not appreciated when it is quite beatiful. Why must Beyonce ALWAYS have Barbie blonde hair? Also, do you know the history behind black face? In fact there were many black minstrel actors who did black face to make white people laugh at them at the turn of the century. So there is a terrible history of black minstrel actors forced to put on black face in order to be ridiculed by white audiences. These were big selling shows and the images were awful and stereotypical. Beyonce should know about this history or at least learn about it. Maybe, like you, she just doesn’t know this painful history. Either way, why does she think a blotch of dar black paint on her face represent Africa? Why does she think she – a black woman from the South – can’t represent Africa? She is ridiculous but you know her Barbie image has made her a lot of money and I think she could not care less about the damage it is doing to her own people. SMH.

  • Annie

I wouldn’t call this “blackface” at all. Blackface means an intentional charicature of black people – big afro wigs and painted on red lips etc. Blackface is intended to be offensive and derogatory. This to me is just an interesting “look” for a photoshoot. If anything the darker makeup makes Bea’s features look more caucasian. I can understand the point that not all native Africans have dark skin and the very dark skin is only the main stereotype – but Beyonce here is shown with different skin tones in various shots, but lighter and darker than her natural color.

    Thanks for the post !

L’OFFICIEL is very proud to present its March issue featuring Beyoncé in African-inspired dresses and jewelry by top designers, including Gucci, Azzedine Alaia, Fendi, Pucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Rodarte, Dolce & Gabbana, Cartier and Lanvin. Designer Tina Knowles, who is also Beyoncé’s mother, created a one of a kind couture piece. The designs are all reflective of the African influence on fashion this season. Miss Knowles poses with royal allure. A queen, a goddess, Beyoncé is a bombshell beauty with a divine voice. We’re thrilled she’s opening a season of celebrating the 90th anniversary of L’Officiel de la Mode. The series was conceived as using art and fashion in paying homage to African queens.

Beyoncé mentioned the artist Fela Kuti in the interview as one of her musical inspirations. It was later misquoted as the inspiration for the shoot. We would like to clarify that it is not the case. As for the artistic makeup, the inspiration came from several African rituals during which paint is used on the face. We find the images beautiful and inspiring.

L’Officiel would like to thank Beyoncé for her outstanding contribution to this celebration of African influences in Fashion.

  • Patrick

I think she looks beautiful and definitely don’t believe she meant any harm by this or to cause any drama. We all know Beyonce is an amazing woman and performer, which is why I trust that she did this in good taste. You can’t take offense to everything.

  • Stella

Africa is a vast continent so there is no one ‘African’ look and african people can have a skin tone that ranges from very dark to fair. Also some Africans more example many Ethiopians and Somalis may be dark skinned but have features that don’t fit the african stereotype. I thought perhaps this shoot was intended to show a more diverse African look and that was why they painted Beyonce’s face different tones of brown – but in this case, it would have been FAR more appropriate to use real african models with different features and skin tones.

  • solan

Gucci asked the wrong Knowles sister for this campaign. Solange is clearly more culturally aware and proud of her ethnicity. For some time now she’s been rocking an African inspired look with her beautiful natural hair and head wraps.

  • nothanku

Beyonce seems nice enough but she clearly has an identity issue and is most def money craven. She’ll do anything for more $$$, like marrying Jay Z…. who’s babies she’ll never have because they’d most likely look like him (too black).

  • patty

I think that she looks lovely. In my mind, varying the skin color, to be chocolate, is no different than a photo shoot where a blonde becomes a brunette or a brunette becomes a blonde.

Newsflash: When most people see Beyonce, they see glamour, extreme beauty. She is not typical —-since her lineage is French Creole, most people assume that her beauty associated to her European features and Afro-Native American -European coloration.

Also, most people understand genetics. And they also understand that a person can have mostly European features or genetics and be considered White, hispanic, near white and Black. Beyonce may consider herself black, she may consider herself French Creole. Nonetheless, the fact that she flits in an out of skin colors shouldn’t be offensive to anyone. She was always considered an outlier–so, it’s not like the black brand was based or centered around her.

As for hair, name a singer who doesn’t wear wigs, extensions, or augments. Constant nasty references to her hair supplements is just bitchy.

Hummm yes Beyonce has had Black hair Brown hair just google it. There’s No rule saying a Black woman should’nt dy her hair Blonde. You’re one that sounds a like a fool a mad. Don’t get mad at Beyonce because there is something about yourself you don’t like .FYI and black person can’t do “blackface” and dear this isn’t black face you maybe you need to look it up and understand the meaning behind it because clearly you don’t have any clue. Black people do their own damage to themselves everytime you turn around a black person is always hating on the NEXT i.e Beyonce just look at every post about her there is always HATE towards. Blacks need to get over what happen in the 1800′s you didn’t go through it so you would NEVER understand what those ppl had to go through just be thankful enuff they did so you wouldn’t have to. Black People you can never go foward in like always looking backwards.

@Just Wrong: Humm you do know that Beyoncé makes like 80millions a year right ? And Jay-Z doesn’t even come close to that ! He’s net worth is like 1.5 Billion and hers like 500 Millions , why would she force her to marry someone with 500 Millions !?
Love is Love don’t hate on people because you’re miserable !
