Nicki Minaj: It's Okay to Be Weird!

Nicki Minaj: It's Okay to Be Weird!

Nicki Minaj takes the cover of BlackBook‘s latest issue.

Here’s what the 26-year-old rapper had to share with the mag:

On almost giving up her dreams: “I had no money, I had no one to call, and I was out on my own. I also had the burden of not wanting to tell my mother that I was out of a job, and could I come back home? Besides faith in God, the only thing that got me through that time was the fear of what would happen to my family if I didn’t make it. I remember thinking, I don’t know if this is ever going work but I’m going to give it one final try.”

On being compared to Lady Gaga: “We both do the awkward, non-pretty thing. What we’re saying – what I’m saying, anyway – is that it’s okay to be weird. And maybe your weird is my normal. Who’s to say? I think it’s an attitude we both share.”

On meeting men: “I’m not the type to be talking to a random dude in the club. Unless I know him, I don’t even want to be introduced to him, because it always turns into me being perceived as the ultimate whore-bag. I remember one time I saw a guy, someone famous, who was at one of my parties. I kissed him on the cheek and went to my seat, and they put up a story that me and him left together that night and went to a hotel.”

I think it’s good that a black girl girl goes out of the box. Black people seem to have this mentality that there’s a single personality type for blacks.. There isn’t.

Weird? She’s need to be weird it’s funny but look not weird

Oh please Nicki, you’re not weird, you just try to be so to get more attention. Look at female artists these days, aren’t they all “weird”? It’s just a new money making fad. Look at her BEFORE she was famous, there wasn’t anything “weird” about her.

Haha at least she knows how she’s perceived.

@BEAN: Exactly. Gaga did a 180 too, because she understood that looking like herself and making the music she did… wasn’t making her any money. Wait for their fans to start defending them with “we all grow! we all change!” Lol. Right, we all evolve into attention-seeking ‘art pieces’. xD Please.

I love her but fact is she didn’t dress this way before she was famous — she shares THAT fact with Lady Gaga. Both may have felt ‘weird’ inside but altering your image so much and getting people talking about it instead of your music makes you look pretentious and gets old fast. Makes people forget you have talent in the first place.

@Skylar: Maybe that is the mentality of black people in North America. Certainly not worldwide. However I do stand with my earlier statement that Nicki Minaj is as common as the next person.

Something about her seems so forced to me….like she’s trying to hard idk y, u just get that vibe everytime I see her

You do not get much attention being like everyone else. It is good to go outside the box but it is not without risks.

I love risk takers :)

nice pics keep doing you nicki.

there is a difference between being weird and do anything to get attention.
