Christina Ricci: 'Pan Am' Pilot for ABC?

Christina Ricci spends some time with family members on Thursday (February 24) in Silverlake, Calif.

The 31-year-old actress is in talks to star in ABC’s 1960s-set pilot Pan Am, according to THR.

The show is described as “a nighttime soap revolving around pilots and flight attendants (or stewardesses, as they were known then) at the once-dominant airline.”

I think Christina’s great, but did the networks just realize how hot Mad Men is so they’re jumping on the bandwagon 4 years later? NBC’s doing that Playboy pilot and ABC’s doing Pan Am. What’s next, Coke Wars on Fox, about the rise of Coca-Cola to become the most classic American image along with McDonald’s, shown alongside the civil rights movement? I think a lot of these pilots will fail, like that 70s set show Swingtown.

I’m 60. And like many other boomers, I’ve flown on Pan Am before – not to mention other airlines that are now either snapped up by bigger airlines or defunct (Air Cal, Western, Hughes Air West, etc.). And as most boomers remember, the heyday of Pan Am was a time when travelers were treated like kings and queens – unlike today when their treated like cattle. I think the pilot will do well because it will appeal to an untapped niche of boomers who are now retiring in large numbers. It will be interesting to see what advertisers they line up, too, since the ads would be targeted primarily toward a boomer audience.

Don’t forget Eastern and Northwest Orient… they actually had full-service lunches and dinners for all passengers.

It was a different, and lost, time in air travel. Now planes are cattle cars.
