Maggie Q Covers 'Emmy' Magazine

Maggie Q strikes a pose in this new shot from Emmy magazine’s latest issue, on newsstands Tuesday, April 5!

Here’s what the 31-year-old Nikita star had to share:

On why she goes by Maggie Q: “People [in Asia] couldn’t pronounce my last name because it was too Irish. So the Apple Daily, the biggest newspaper in China, printed a story and referred to me as Maggie Q. Every other newspaper and magazine followed, and that was it.”

On learning that she’s the highest profile Asian actress to star in a broadcast drama series: “It was a mixed moment of ‘Wow! What? How come this hasn’t happened yet?’ But what really thrills me is that it’s going to be exciting for other people, for everyone after me. Once it was said, ‘They aren’t hiring minorities in this capacity.’ Guess what? Now they are.”

On considering Nikita to be a first-rate action show: “I think we’ve evolved in the genre since Buffy and Alias. I remember seeing bad wigs on doubles. Then they cut to a closeup, then there’s a wide shot and you know the actress is not doing it. When I fight, you’re right there in our faces, very Bourne. You expect that from that caliber [of film], so why wouldn’t you expect it on TV?”

It is really sad that we don’t have enough minorities representation in Hollywood. I would love to see more diversity in movies and series and for non-white actors to be able to get more roles. The last thing I think about when I go to the movies is whether the actors are Asians, black or Latinos. If the movie looks good and the actors are good, I’ll watch it. I love Nikita!

Maggie Q is the one of the few Asian actresses to star in the lead role on a prime time tv show. Although, Sandra Oh is amazing as Cristina Yang who is one of my favorite character’s on Grey’s Anatomy! Granted Maggie is mixed since her is mother Vietnamese & Father Irish/Polish.

It’s pretty sad how few Asian actresses are in leading strong character roles on tv shows. Although, on BSG ( The New BattleStar Galatica Grace Park as Boomer was great and Grace was cool on The Cleaner,
Keiko Agena as Lane Kim on Gilmore Girls.

@Michelle: I agree. There needs to be more Asians in film and TV, as well as other minorities. I’d love to see that.
I love Sandra! She’s such a gifted actress and one of my absolute favorites on Grey’s. I’m a fan of Nikita. The last few episodes have been boring or bizarre so let’s hope they can spruce it up by the time it comes back next month. As for Maggie, she’s awesome. I feel sorry for her though, people keep asking about her damn name. Why don’t these lazy ass reporters read her other interviews? She’s answered that stupid question dozens of times now!

i love maggie q. she’s one of the best kick ass women who fights men and still manage to look sexy! NIKITA – one of the best action/spy show aside from Chuck!

wasnt sure about nikita at first, i liked la femme nikita even if it was fairly laughable half the time, but then LFN was a spin off remake type thing of a french movie so a coninuence of the same story is just continuing tradation so started watching and despite a rocky start Im starting to quite enjoy it and Maggie Q isnt just another pretty face, shes actually pretty good and shes right, you can see tis her/other actors actually putting hte work in, getting the training and doing the majority of stunts/fightwork. Good for her, shes raising profile of an ethnic minority but also not in a ‘llok im asian and in a good role’ but in an ‘Im a good actress, in a good show, i happen to be asian’ sort of way. She got the part for her abilities, not so the network could parade around their hiring choice. If that makes sense, either way Good For Her, i like her

I loved Alias and Dark Angel, so i was thrilled to have Nikita. There should be more kick-ass women. I liked Maggie Q since Naked Weapon. Also good action movie with female lead characters.

Nikita is a great show and Maggie Q is a great fit, I just hope The CW does not make a mistake and cancel it after just one season.

How can she insinuate that Alias had bad wigs and doubles !! Cannot believe this girl … Alias was the best show ever done on TV ! Nikita is very unrealistic to me since she is skinny and beating up men who are 10 times her weight…
