'Rio' Tops 'Madea' & 'Elephants' at Box Office

Rio has taken the top spot at the box office for the second week in a row!

The 3-D animated feature brought in an estimated $26.8 million in ticket sales, narrowly beating out Madea’s Big Happy Family, which took in $25.8 million.

Third place went to Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson‘s Water for Elephants, which took in $17.5 million and had audiences overwhelming comprised of women over 25 years old.

Also of note this weekend are Hop, which had a 17% increase over last weekend’s numbers, and African Cats, which had a solid start for a limited opening weekend.

Water for Elephants was surprisingly really good – so was Rob Pattinson. I didn’t think he would be good but he was. The animals were the stars.

rio was good and i saw wfe, it was okay, i just thought it was not up to the book. The romance wasn’t the same on screen for some reason. But it was fine, i guess.

Poor jealous carlota, unhappy that rob is a hot movie star with a hot gf, so you’re trying to rejoice in what you think is a bomb, when the critics and the box office predictors say otherwise. All of Robs movies have made money, you sad delusional bitter freak.

I saw Madea’s Big Happy Family. It was funny. Not the best Tyler Perry film, but we had fun watching it. I really want to see Rio now though since it’s doing so well.

This is the most money WFE is going to make, this coming weekend Fast Five is coming out and is going to be a big hit WFE will most likely drop to 6 or 7 places by the end of next weekend. In the end WFE will probably make back its Production Budget or make a little over when/if it goes worldwide but when you add in the money they spent on over advertizing it’s not looking good.

    Ana Says:

How can you say that a movie on a 3rd place at box office is a flop?? are you insane? really. just because it’s not no.1 that doesn’t mean is a flop!! the movie is on the 3rd place for God!!

I’m happy for Rob..this is his first hit outside Twilight..Remember Me was other thing…. but WFE is his first big thing outside the twilight thing.

Good for u Rob!! The movie is great, the story is awesome..and he acts good in it!

oh and there is still left Sunday night! and remember that USA it’s not the center of the earth@ this movie it’s going to be released Worldwide..and we’ll see!! Rob has a looooooooooooooooooooooooot of fans all over the world..and other people that loved the book and want to see the movie..or haven’ read the book but they loved the trailers so they’ll go and see it! but this is a good start.

    Interesting..... Says:

“Third place went to Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson’s Water for Elephants, which took in $17.5 million and had audiences overwhelming comprised of women over 25 years old”, SO basically this movie FLOPPED in USA, no matter how you dress it up, since it cost $38 million to make to Madea’s Big Happy Family $25 million plus had 500 seats to Madea’s.

Also, had two Oscar winners Reese and Christoph Waltz and they got beaten by a bird and crossdresser.. I think Robert should hold on tight to his twilight fame because it’s going to be difficult once that franchise is over. It might surprise and have legs plus do well in other parts of the world mmmmmmm. Robert can’t act but tries oh well at least Rio tops.

    Bring on Fast Five……

@Anne laure bernard: i really enjoyed hanna. it needed more plot line and some characters development more and then it could have been another taken.

    Yep Says:

@Ana: i agree the movie made 2 million more than expected. this is a holiday weekend, family time so the children are seeing rio. madea movies are well established again family movie. i am happy for rob and reese and the other actors too! going by the polls rob is a large reason for the box office along with the book.

    Danni Says:

WFE has performed better than expected already in three days. It’s not even done yet! So you guys calling it a flop, shut the f*ck up! You have no clue what you are talking about. When you don’t have facts straight, you just sound like jealous haters.

    Jane Says:

@ Ana, “How can you say that a movie on a 3rd place at box office is a flop??” Because every other star, who doesn’t make the No.1 slot is called a flop depending on the star you are a fan off. Which means Robert, Reese, and Christoph shouldn’t get any special treatment.

Play fair to all other stars in that case then.

Don’t worry, I think the movie will do well overall but @ Interesting…. makes good points too.

  19. 19
    Ana Says:

jane..but i don’t know this is crazy..this idea of yours( general speaking) because it wasn’t no 1 it doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie! i repeat it was on 3. not on 20!:| adn the weekend isnt’s over yet…

  20. 20
    Jane Says:

@Ana: I agree with you there’s no logic to what industry and certain fans think in terms of what is considered as a flop.

Just because it’s not No. 1, it doesn’t necessary make it a bad movie but could be (honestly, the movie was not to my taste but it was alright). People need to judge for themselves and watch.

I agree with your comment, and yes importantly the weekend is not over yet.

However, I still see were @ Interesting…… is coming from too because that’s what the media has given us to believe (how else do you classify A lister to C lister etc), not saying everything is black or white but that’s the reality especially, if your a high profile star.

I said overall, I think the movie should do well.

However, I don’t like favouritism of certain stars to others. For me, anyone who makes the top 10 is a hit but don’t make excuses for one particular star and not the rest.

Why is one movie a hit in third place but another is a fail regardless of the cost/marketing it still reads third place.

    Butter_Fly Says:

We’re going to see WFE next weekend. I’m kinda surprised it didn’t at least make #2. But glad too see Rio doing so well also..another movie I want to see. But other than that this is seriously going to be one crappy summer.

  22. 22
    Whatever Says:

Pretty sure WFE would’ve made less if kids who wanted to watch Scream 4 (rated R) most likely got tickets for WFE and sneaked in to watch Scream 4. Haha, Rob is pathetic.

    Avid Reader Says:

I saw Water for Elephants on Friday, April 22, 2011. A long movie that held my attention the entire time! I liked Rob Pattinson better in Remember Me. He was so much like James Dean in that movie. i don’t know why it wasn’t a big success.
Back to WFE, Rob doesn’t disappoint at all. He’s a great actor! The movie could’ve had a little more time for romantic scenes between Rob and Reese. Even their one big love scene was too brief. They lacked some chemistry between them for that reason.
I did love the movie and will go to see it again.

    Jeannie Says:

I did see Water for Elephants on Friday. I thought the move was really good. I actually hated for it to be over. Robert Pattinson was fantastic. Even since The Haunted Airman he has proven himself to be one of the best. As far as the chemistry between Rob and Reese, well I think we are simply use to Kristen. Will see the. film again and also by the DVD

    Yep Says:

@Interesting…..: not always true, grown ups was like #3 when it opened and ended up making 164 million in the US. salt wasn’t # one but made 118 million, yet both movies are success at the box office. so time will tell if wfe will be a box office hit!
