Brad Pitt: Cannes Photo Call for 'Tree of Life'

A white hot Brad Pitt keeps close to red hot co-star Jessica Chastain at the photocall for their new movie, The Tree Of Life, during the 2011 Cannes Film Festival held at Palais des Festivals on Monday (May 16) in Cannes, France.

Early reviews have been quite favorable. Variety says, “Few American filmmakers are as alive to the splendor of the natural world as Terrence Malick, but even by his standards, The Tree of Life represents something extraordinary. The iconoclastic director’s long-awaited fifth feature is in many ways his simplest yet most challenging work, a transfixing odyssey through time and memory that melds a young boy’s 1950s upbringing with a magisterial rumination on the Earth’s origins.”

THR adds that Brad gives “one of his finest performances.”

FYI: Brad, 47, suited up in Maison Martin Margiela and Tom Ford sunglasses. Jessica, 30, paired her Oscar de la Renta dress with Brian Atwood shoes. She finished her look with House of Lavande earrings.

Ouch I’m gonna get it for saying this but this guy is full of himself, wears stuff to draw attention to him, total Hollywood( look at me!) Tree of life may be a decent movie , have to wait see..

  • busted

    Leave him alone..

He can wear whatever he wants..

Love Brad in White.. and so into the sneakers or whatever they are.

I love that he does his own thing and to hell with the people that don’t like it..

A Man in all sense of the word.

Jessica is a pretty woman.. She fits the role very nicely..

  • Lydia Roberts

It is unfortunate that Tree of Life is only getting a limited release and that we won’t find out how it would have done commercially if released nationwide. It has an interesting cast and it would have been interesting to see how a smaller film for Brad Pitt would do commercially.

  • Lazerov

I hope J.J. Abrams gives Brad Pitt a cameo in Star Trek 12.

  • busted

    @Lydia Roberts:

You have posted that comment before on other sites/threads except it was not with Brad and Tree of Life but with another film/actor.

(If I had time to think about it I could recall the film/actor)

Is this some kind of package response. I never bought into people being paid to post on websites, but I now know that it is true. There are paid posters

Your comment is not negative.. I just know that it is a package reply because it was said exactly on another thread and site.

looks good but would be even better if he tried to go back to his ocean’s 11 look

My favourite Brad Pitt movie is Meet Joe Black (1998). It is an underappreciated and underrated classic. Everyone should watch that epic drama at least once in their life. It should have won a truckload of Oscars.

hate the greasy hair. trying too hard brad!

Woot! First day of vacation and I get Brad Pitt in all his sexy beastness!

For the folks picking on Brad’s style – it’s Brad’s style…that’s exactly why you don’t get it. I love the white on white – that’s the trend this summer – and Brad is one of the few persons, male or female, that could pull it off. And personally, I love the shades on him.
    Can’t touch Brad’s style, I’m telling ya.

While the bulk of the film is set in the ‘50s, it also flashes all the way back to the birth of life as we know it. Yes, the rumours are true: there are dinosaurs.

If the CG dinos aren’t the most impressive ever seen, there will be few films this year to beat Tree Of Life’s overall visual splendor.

Lighting, shot composition, production design and editing are all impeccably gorgeous. The music and sound design aren’t too shabby either.

But what of the story? In a nutshell, it’s about a man, Jack (Sean Penn), reflecting on his complex relationship with his domineering dad, Mr O’Brien (Brad Pitt).

In typical Malick fashion, the narrative is splintered into a series of impressions. Montages are rife. Dialogue is sparse.

The writer/director’s signature is omnipresent, but he doesn’t smother the acting. Pitt excels as the proud patriarch, exhibiting fearsome rage in one family confrontation.

Newcomer Jessica Chastain is also fine with the confines of a somewhat idealised wife/mother role.

Pitt ‘hesitant’ over role of abusive father

Brad Pitt said he hoped his children would realise his portrayal of a stern father in his latest film was down to him being “a pretty damn-good actor” and not because it was close to reality.

The star, who is at the Cannes Film Festival to publicise The Tree of Life which is in the running for the coveted Palme d’Or, plays an authoritarian parent bringing up a family in 1950s Texas in the film.

Pitt, who has six children with his partner Angelina Jolie, admitted he had been “hesitant” about taking on the role.

“I think about everything I do now my kids are going to see when they grow up and how are they going to feel but they know me as a dad and I hope they’ll just think of me as a pretty, damn-good actor,” he said.

Pitt said he took on the role, at least in part, to make sure the film got made. “Real strong scripts go by the wayside and don’t get made and we wanted to make sure this one did and so I jumped in.”

Pitt was joined by actress Jessica Chastain, who plays his wife in the film. Conspicuous by their absence were Sean Penn, who plays the couple’s son as an adult, and the film’s director Terrence Malick.

Penn, who producer Bill Pohlad explained was in Haiti, is expected at the festival later this week where another of his films, This Must Be The Place, is also in competition.

Producer Sarah Green said the reclusive Malick is “very shy” and Pitt defended his absence, saying an “an artist should not have to be a salesman”.

The movie world is a fickle one. With “The Tree Of Life” now screened and appraised, in a few hours everyone will move on and by tomorrow it will be just another story from Cannes. Another entry that got talked about, perhaps divided some audience members (a small core booed the film, but they were quickly quieted by the rest of the Lumiere Theater) and got Brad Pitt onto the red carpet, the sun will set tonight and the great wait and mystery for Malick’s film will be over. But bursting with ideas, images, sounds and a deep well of spirituality rarely ever tackled in independent or mainstream cinema alike, Malick’s film is still an event. With “The Tree Of Life” the director has once again created a cinematic experience that is uniquely his own, often powerful, mesmerizing, at times overreaching and overbearing, but never forgettable. It’s another bold stroke from one of cinema’s most original voices, so put aside the hype aside, and let “The Tree Of Life” take root.

Hey Bradley you better run for your life she’s turning you into a old dirty, greasy ,looking man.

  • Amy

@Jo, how in the world is wearing a white suit calling attention to himself? A red suit would be attention grabbing. It’s really laughable that haters are so desperate to bash Brad and Angelina they try to make the smallest thing into major scandal. It always comes off as pathetic.

  • hater

bwahahahahha Tree of Life was BOOED in Cannes. just add another flop in the carreer of Brad Pitt.

  • yaya

Doh how can I miss the new thread again.

  • FrG

Actually he just look very tired…

  • Cherry

To all those hating on Brad and Angelina, remember the saying, when you hate someone it’s like you drinking poison and hoping the person dies. Brad and Angelina could care less what you have to say. I doubt they check your opinion to live their life. Stop the hating. Go live your pure life without sin.

  • Gab

@hater: Oh so you were there, were you? Sat right next to Terry Malick, right?

  • Obsessed

    Damn! The man is S-E-X-Y.

  • yaya

Brad looks gorgeous I like his smile. Haters you are jealous and are so predictable . I am happy to read the reviews. Good for him I am looking forward to see it.

  • groundcontrol

By those who were actually in the theater it was only 10 – 20 people out of the 2,000 in attendance. It almost seems like a deliberately poseur act. Sorry to disappoint your baser instincts.
The Guardian gave it 5 out of 5 stars . Many serious reviews are heaping praise on it.
I can’t wait to see it and I am very curious about the final scene.

  • Sherry

Congratulations Brad and Angie…. Hope both your movies go on to critical acclaim and win prizes at home and abroad….enjoy your loving family and friends.
Betcha Baby Jane has already circled December 23rd on her calendar to bring her stalking A game…, this time she will be naked with the banana in her whatsit rather than her mouth, now that is something worth talking about NOT, PATHETIC.
