Jennifer Lawrence as Hunger Games' Katniss - FIRST LOOK

Check out this first shot of Jennifer Lawrence as the Hunger Games‘ heroine, Katniss Everdeen!

The 20-year-old actress opened up to EW about taking on the role of the District 12 tribute.

“I knew that as soon as I said yes, my life would change,” Jennifer said. “And I walked around an entire day thinking ‘It’s not too late, I could still go back and do indies, I haven’t said yes yet, it’s not too late.’”

“I love this story,” Jennifer added, “and if I had said no, I would regret it every day.”

    Jennifer is lovely, gorgeous, sexy and beautiful. I love her. She’s a really sweet girl.

    I hope she will play an action heroine one day or at least have one little fight in a movie. Just let her kick a guy in the groin or something.

    Nope. Too old to play Katniss.
    Can we see Josh Hutcherson with blonde hair next? That should be interesting.

    lauren Says:

    Im sorry to burst your bubbles (and im inevitably gonna get thumbed down for this) But this is a photo of her as Katniss and so therefore heavily photoshopped. No dis-respect to the girl, and im not saying its a bad thing, but she’s quite big boned and has an athletic build so i doubt she’ll ever get to the physique of Katniss. Her hair can be dyed, but the skin tone in the pic is again down to hollywoods good old friend photoshop.i doubt it will look like that in the film.
    I’m not saying she’s a bad actress, i’ve never seen her work and as im no oscar winner myself, its not like im in a place to judge. but aesthetically, something about this girl doen’t fit with Katniss,

    Great but still not like I saw Katniss. But I’m sure Jennifer Lawrence will make it looks good, she’s an amazing and talented actress. I trust her for that.

    “I knew that as soon as I said yes, my life would change,” Jennifer said. “And I walked around an entire day thinking ‘It’s not too late, I could still go back and do indies, I haven’t said yes yet, it’s not too late.’”

    This makes her sound a bit conceited,I’m sure saying No was not on her shortlist of answers.
    One of the most coveted roles in Hollywood that skyrockets her onto the A-list.Secures her financially for life.And it has sequels.

    She seems like a nice girl,and I like her.But the position of has-it-all-but-still-whines has been filled by Kristen Stewart.
    Don’t become Kristen Stewart,Jennifer.

    She’s Mystique in the Xmen prequel. I think that ould qualify as an action movie. mystique was always pretty aggressive

    Wow. Talk about perfect. She also has an Oscar nod. Perfect for the role.

    di Says:

    If the wooden Kristen Stewart was considered alright to play Bella which ruined the franchise for me ,Jennifer who is a real actress will definitely rock as katniss. These minor things will be taken care of. When you see her on the screen you will love it.

    TinyDancer Says:

    @Laki: Christ, Laki, cut her a break. She’s not whining. She’s just acknowledging that her life would change if she took a big film like this. And she’s right. If she had taken an indie film it’s unlikely you would have posted that judgemental comment about her being “conceited” and “whining.” The girl was Oscar nominated, I’m sure she had a lot of offers coming her way, including other indie films like the ones she’s known for. She had doubts, she’s a HUMAN. Just because she didn’t act the way you would have doesn’t mean she is “whining” or is full of herself.

  16. 16
    ME Says:

    Meh. Still not feeling it. She looks too old.

  17. 17
    ME Says:

    @Laki:

    I think she’s getting ahead of herself to be honest. I don’t think this film series success is guaranteed. There’s still a really good chance the first film will flop and they won’t bother to make the rest a la His Dark Materials.

    I liked the books, but I’m not so attached that I will be upset if the rest don’t get made. I’m also not anticipating the film too much. When I see that first trailer, that’s when I will know for sure that I want to see this.
    They haven’t convinced me yet. A lot of the casting is questionable.

    @lauren:

    I guess you’ve never had your picture taken by a good photographer. You’d be amazed at what they can do with camera angles. I don’t think she’s been photoshopped in that way. I don’t know if they gave her darker skin or anything else, but I don’t think they manipulated the picture to make her look skinnier.

    Laki Says:

    @TinyDancer:
    In a free-wheeling interview, Lawrence describes her first encounter with Ross last winter, during the height of Oscar season. “He was asking me what the experience was like,” she recalls, “and I just kind of opened up and said, ‘I feel like a rag doll. I have hair and makeup people coming to my house every day and putting me in new, uncomfortable, weird dresses and expensive shoes, and I just shut down and raise my arms up for them to get the dress on, and pout my lips when they need to put the lipstick on.’ And we both started laughing because that’s exactly what it’s like for Katniss in the Capitol. She was a girl who’s all of a sudden being introduced to fame. I know what that feels like to have all this flurry around you and feel like, ‘Oh, no, I don’t belong here.’”(taken from ew.com)

    Whiiiiiineee.

    Now I’ve actually seen her as Katniss, well I STILL don’t see it :X

  22. 22
    Sandra Says:

    If Emma Watson could get away with blond perfectly curled ringlets for Hermione, when it called for brown bushy hair, the audience will forget a small flaw like not being small boned, which is really subjective anyways, especially when she is also described as a warrior and fighter in the same breath.

  23. 23
    Abby Says:

    She looks really good with dark hair. But shouldn’t her hair be longer? I think she’ll make a good Katniss but I still think she’s too old. She could never pass for a 16 year old in this pic. I think they could have found an actress who would act and also LOOK 16. Even if they didn’t want to really get a 16 year old (for legal working reasons) they could have alteast got one who looked 16.

    @Laki:
    How is that whining????????? Shes 20, shes still pretty young, she did a movie, a beautiful heartbreaking independent movie thatshe was always worried people wouldnt see because she thought the story that was told, the lives these people had should be seen, should be shared and suddenly BAM she gets nominated for everything under the sun, and she should have won the oscar by rights, she was far far better than Portman and shes pulled into this whirlwind of red carperts and makeup and dresses and suddenly everyone wanting to know your nameand be close to the rising star and thats scary and exciting and OTT and shes sharing how that made her feel and thats WHINING? where do you get off?
    I assume youve read the books, so her experience IS like Katniss, but I assume you dont think the chapters devoted to Katniss thoughts of her ‘team’ of the oddness of these people speaking a language she doesnt really follow, the concept of faashion and finding her place within that world whining?
    You really need to grow up and learn the difference between sharing an expericnce, sharing how she can relate, what she can draw on to enbody a character, and someone whining. cos what youre doing all over this thread is whining. you dont like Jennifer. i bet shes crying into her wheaties about it, shes a phenomenal actress, successful and yeah, signing onto something this big that has such potential IS life changing ESPECIALLY if it doesnt go well, because of all the crap like you suddenly turning on her. GROW UP

    She looks okay. Not at all how I imagined Katniss, but Jennifer is tolerable.

    I’m more excited to see the boys. I think Liam can easily look like Gale, not so convinced about Josh as Peeta.

    Sabinal Says:

    @Laki

    [please note, this comes from a person who has not read the Hunger Games series. I'm a Scott Westerfield "Uglies" series chick :)]

    i think that’s exactly what she is trying to become. After her Oscar loss from Winter’s Bone, she seems so desperate for stardom, she was begging to play Katniss.

    That took my interest in the movie away. I know movies are about money making first and foremost, but when people fight for roles that they *think* are going to make them stars, I lose interest immediately. Which explains why I don’t watch a lot of movies.

    To me, Hunger Games is one of the first victims of the Twilight Curse. Hollywood now thinks that *every* teen book can be produced as a mega bestseller. Mind you, this is a very popular series with everyone, but the true schtick for Twilight was the pained romantic Edward and his obsession with Bella. That created a mania for Twilight — the idea of being *the* woman for someone. the Hunger Games does not seem to have that.

  33. 33
    Sabinal Says:

    @Keilee:

    if you don’t agree, fine. But yelling at someone from your laptop or desktop solves nothing. People have their differences.

  34. 34
    BG Says:

    I guess the producers are upping Katniss’ age so they can attract male audiences who wouldn’t feel too ashamed by going to a movie where the the lead is a young girl (eg.Hailee Steinfeld). I know that Chloe Moretz in Kickass was young but she also cursed and the movie was rated R. Hanna likewise doesn’t attract the male audiences.Casting Jennifer is genius because she is more bosomed, curvy and bring sex appeal unlike Saoirse Ronan. Like a new Tomb Raider. Guys going to the movies to ogle prepubescent girls just isn’t cool in this society.

    Hermione was definitely too blond after the second film, too cute and too fashionable to be a believable nerd type character that she was meant to be in the books. Think Jesse Eisenberg in the Social Network as the male Hermione, with a little more girlishness.

  35. 35
    Celia Says:

    @BG:

    Hermione is cute in the books. She’s described as being very pretty. She just also happens to be very intelligent and doesn’t focus a lot of her attention on looks. It’s the same in the films. She doesn’t have a freaking afro, but she her hair is pretty dang bushy to me. And all they ever dress her in is jeans and sweater. She looks like a nerd to me. Not all nerds are unattractive and un-groomed. And I thought Jesse was hot in The Social Network.

    But back on topic. lol. I agree, I get why they chose an older actress for the role. I think the fact that the “child labor laws” won’t apply to her also played a factor. Jennifer will be able to put in more hours on the set and also get away with showing more skin. However, she’s still playing a 16 year old, so hopefully they will stay faithful to that. The Hunger Games is so effective, because these are kids fighting. If she looks like a 20 year old woman, then it won’t have the same impact.

    rachel Says:

    No offense to you guys, but I totaly agree with lauren. jennifer lawrence was oscar nominated, so i have no room to talk, but i just don’t think she fits the part of Katniss. I mean, directors and makeup artists could tweak her appeareance as much as they wouldn’t, but it still wouldn’t fixs the way she is. I’m not syaing this as anything against her, it’s just that her acting and her personality doesn’t fit with the part of katniss. I’m sure she’ll do a great job, but im just not happy with the casting in any of this movie.

  37. 37
    soph Says:

    don’t like her, or any of the other cast, except for liam hemsworth. him i can picture as gale but the rest definitely not! maybe she’ll play a good katniss can’t say she wont until i actually see the movie…

  38. 38
    BG Says:

    There are plenty of girls who are mature looking at 17. It’s not entirely unbelievable that Katniss is 17 in this movie. A more mature 17. And she’ll be in a love triangle with older characters so it is not as creepy.
    Hermione just doesn’t look like the way she was described in the books. Her looks and personality is all wrong. I’m not blaming the actress, having to embody a character for 10 years and maintain her looks throughout is difficult if the character doesn’t morph into the real actress. Just wished they’d tried harder in casting someone who did embody the essence of Hermione from the get go so they wouldn’t have such an out of character Hermione. Sort of like what Anna Popplewell looks now is how Hermione should look. Emma looks like she would make a good Lavender Brown, though.

    Cany Says:

    Awful, the worst thing I’ve ever seen today.
    So sad that the book who are actually really good end up with a “so Disney” movie, they could make a way more better thing with unknown actors and a really good taste on the cast choice.

    lithia999xO Says:

    strange..i always thought that Jennifer looked a bit chesty…in this picture she looks rather bony, or is it just photoshop????

  43. 43
    Keilee Says:

    @Sabinal:
    Im sorry, yelling? I set out my argument clearly and competantly, I couldnt get italics to work so I cap’ed some words for emphasis, not yelling. I didnt make random claims that talking about being in a total whirlwind is ‘whining’. If Jennifer had gone on to say ‘oh it was so stupid, and i was dragged around and tired and all these sicophants love me and it was oh so tough and i poor me i’m the new IT girl,’ then thats whining. As I stated in my arguement, jennifer is simply sharing an experience that she finds mindboggling, and how that experinece helps her with Katniss. there was no yelling, there was emphasis.

  44. 44
    mlav Says:

    didn’t think blondie could handle katniss, but now i’m thinking i might be wrong

  45. 45
    olivia Says:

    Even if I haven’t seen winters bones, the fact she’s been nominated for so many prestigious awards speaks volumes. So they didn’t go for someone who LOOKS like a teenager, they went with someone who had TALENT, someone who could ACT. It does irk me a bit, but i try to think of them as picking someone who could do justice to a great character. HOWEVER, this photo is more photoshop, then real. Jennifer is a gorgeous, very beautiful girl, but she isn’t this thin. That’s what really bothering me. The character, calls for someone who looks thin (like the picture above) and unless she’s been dieting, they’ve made her loose 15 pounds at least. This is only because Katnis is thin, but I really really hope all the training she’s doing makes her loose weight. Katnis isn’t suppose to have such a curvy body like Jennifer.

  46. 46
    creed Says:

    Terrible. The casting director obviously picked who was most famous.
    Everyone who Ive spoken with agrees that Katniss should have the Natalie Portman/Kaya Scodelario look
    I mean really, twilight has better casting than this.
    People should start a petition for them to recast the movie

  47. 47
    Katie G. Says:

    I think that she will do a fantastic job as Katniss. We don’t know exactly what went on in the casting room, but if the directors and the author think that she will make the perfect Katniss Everdeen, then they’re probably right. As for Jennifer being too old, Katniss has lived most of her life providing for her family and being the adult. Therefore she’s mature and old for her age. And really, these days the differences between a twenty-year old and a sixteen year old aren’t always that different. Personally, I can’t wait to see the movie!

  48. 48
    Miriam Says:

    Wow. She looks surprisingly good. My one big beef is that the hair isn’t long enough. This may seem super minor and it is, but Katniss constantly loses hair throughout the series (fireball in book 1, acid fog in book 2, bombing at end of book 3) so it needs to be really long or else she’ll be bald by the end.

  49. 49
    Natalie Says:

    the picture is surprisingly good but i still think that she’s too muscular and thick for this role. she’s not fat at all, that’s not what i mean.. but katniss is supposed to be nearly starving when she goes into the games and jennifer looks quite well-fed and photoshopped in this pic. tho, i’ve got to admit, i’m still psyched to see josh and liam as the male leads and seeing josh with blonde hait will be…interesting

  50. 50
    mutantbroccoli Says:

    We don’t know what the casting director had in mind when he picked Lawrence to portray Katniss in the Hunger Games. Maybe she’s fit enough to perform all the stunts Katniss can like climbing trees, climbing trees and climbing trees. In the physique, the very image of Lawrence did not ever register in my mind while I’m reading the books while the photoshopped version may seem nice though still not enough to coincide with the Katniss I picture in my mind. I would really love to have Isabelle Fuhrman instead a.k.a. the Orphan to be the Katniss.

    OK, this is very opinionated! Nothing serious :P

  51. 51
    Toni Says:

    I think shes a little old for katniss, but im glad their not making someone like kristen stewart be katniss.
    i dont know jennifers work but im sure shell do fine, i just hope that they dont photoshop her that much in the movies, katniss isnt supposed to look amazing! she supposed to look tired and worn out most of the time

  52. 52
    tia Says:

    You know guys – I realize Jen may seem a little old or “big boned”, but it’s not all about the looks – it’s about the person. And if you watch the interviews, and the clips from her films, etc. you can see why they picked her – because she IS Katniss. They say the thing that won her the part, was when she sat down with Gary Ross and said, “I understand if you don’t want me, but just know that the first time Katniss kills someone in the arena, her face can’t be badass. It has to be broken.” Jen is Katniss, and you have to understand that no matter who they cast, some people might not like it, and they wouldn’t be able to look like how every single person imagined. Its too late to change it, and she’s a lot better than many of the options out there, so suck it up. When the movie comes out, you’ll see why the picked her. Because no matter how she may look, she IS Katniss.

  53. 53
    tia Says:

    @Celia:

    But Josh acts exactly like him. Go on YouTube and look up some interviews. He’s the best Peeta ever.

  54. 54
    tia Says:

    @Sabinal:

    The Hunger Games is going to big. Its not Twilight – it has something called a plot, character development, and a message that will leave the audience stunned.

  55. 55
    tia Says:

    @BG:

    Disagree. Emma has Hermione’s personnality through and through.

  56. 56
    J.C Kali Says:

    Just because Jennifer doesn’t really look like Katniss doesn’t mean she’ll be bad. I think she will be great – who cares? I thought looks didn’t matter? At least she tried to look like her… And plus, don’t they have Suzanne helping create the movie to?

  57. 57
    A. Says:

    I don’t see why looking older should be a problem. Katniss has been through a lot in the books, what makes her more mature and she might be older looking then 16 herself. None of us can see what Katniss looked like in Suzanne Collins mind. And besides, some 16-year-olds look way older than their actual age.

  58. 58
    alex Says:

    her skin isnt dark enough, and she looks too old.

  59. 59
    Lila Says:

    @tia:

    I completely agree. With everything you said. Same with Josh. If you watch his interviews, he IS Peeta. Collins said that even if he had wings and purple skin, they would have found a way around it because he was PERFECT. I hate how all these people say they hate the casting because they only care about how the actors LOOK, not how they actually ACT. Do you really want look a like horrible actors, or great actors who don’t look exactly like the characters?

  60. 60
    meh Says:

    I think they kinda wanted an actress who looked/is older than 16 just to show the burden of being a citizen in the destricts of Panem and all that she went through in the Games… ya know, like for me, in my OWN opinion, I pictured Katniss like this, mature and doesn’t even look 16. Trust me I know that some people look older than they are, I’m one of them. I think Jennifer Lawrence can do it. Let’s just give her a chance peeps :) OH and I just really hope that this is not another Twilight thing where there’s team “Peeta” and team “Gale”
    Pls people none of that.
