Brad Pitt: 'The Tree of Life' Wins Palme d'Or

Director Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life won the coveted Palme d’Or prize from the jury of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

The flick, which tells the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950′s, follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood (Hunter McCracken) to his disillusioned adult years (Sean Penn) as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father. Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain play the parents.

Nicolas Winding Refn picked up Best Director for Drive, Jean Dujardin won Best Actor for The Artist, and Kirsten Dunst received Best Actress for Melancholia.

My favourite Brad Pitt movie is Meet Joe Black (1998). It is an underappreciated and underrated classic. Everyone should watch this epic drama at least once in their life. It should have been much more critically and commercially successful and won a truckload of Oscars.

  • Wiktoria

It is unfortunate that Tree of Life is only getting a limited release and that we won’t find out how it would have done commercially if released nationwide. It has an interesting cast and it would have been interesting to see how a smaller film for Brad Pitt and Sean Penn would do commercially.

CANNES 2011 winners: The Tree of Life wins Palme d’Or

The Robert De Niro-led Cannes 2011 jury gave the Palme d’Or to Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life. Bill Pohlad, one of the producers, noted that Malick remained “infamously and notoriously shy and quite humble,” which is why he didn’t take the stage himself. “But I know he’d be thrilled with this award.”

Congrats to the Tree of life, cast and crew and Plan B productions.

    Dear BBOQ,
    .
This is an opinion…which I am entitled to. Please keeps your head up your ass and ignore the post. We’d all appreciate it!
    .
IIRC it’s been a long time since an American filmmaker has won the Palm D’Or. That will be a HUGE MARKETING TOOL for taking TOL wide. Film festival awards don’t get any more prestigious than the top prize at Cannes. When it goes wide on July 8 this should enable them to put it in more theaters than they originally planned. Malick’s last film – Brave New World – was in over 800 theaters at its widest release. I still think that might be pushing it for TOL, but never say never.
    .
With news like this I think Ticky is going to have to ring up New Line and ask them to put her nekkid boobs back in Horrible Movie. I can’t wait to see what she does when KFP2 bring in $60MIL+ next weekend. That may require a trip to Meh-hee-co with a fauxmancer…

I just saw some KFP2 premiere pix and I gotta say – the TOL Palm D’Or thread is gonna be very short-lived. LOL. Angie’s rockin’ a thigh-high slit again. I’m gonna guess that Brad had a hand in dressing her again today. The man loves his Easy Access Panels.

nothing negative about this. It is all A win..win..win..

    Bravo Mr. Malick

    wonder if Brad knows..

He and Angie look HOT and CHIC on the KFP 2 premier RC.

Jane Fonda shows off her French and then says, “let’s cut to the chase.” DeNiro announces the Palme d’Or winner: The Tree of Life. It’s a popular choice in the press room. Producers Bill Pohlad and Sarah Green accept for director Malick. “Bravo” say folks in the hall.

“Terry remains incredibly shy,” says Pohlad. “The Tree of Life was a long road. Winning this award tonight has made it all worthwhile.” Fox Searchlight is cheering too—and Summit’s Patrick Wachsberger leads the standing ovation, as he has sold territories around the world.

Awwwwww…how cute. The rest of the kids get to experience their first premiere. Once again…I gotta say…I still don’t see why Brad and Angie can’t adopt me. I’m house-trained AND I can bath myself and get myself dressed in the mornings. They’d also save money because they wouldn’t need to hire a nanny, enroll me in a private school or hire tutors when traveling. Sounds like a win-win-win-win-win to me.

So happy for The Tree of Life even thought I haven’t seen the movie yet, I’m just Brand’s number one admirer. And sooo happy for Jean Dujardin, he totally deserves it! He is one of the best french actors of his generation. I absolutely love him. Vive Brad et vive Jean!!

  • anon

Wow! A bravura performance by Brad, beautiful reviews, and now the Palm d’Or for this visionary but challenging film. That should help with it getting wide distribution and a chance for many us to see Malick’s creation. Brad’s presence helped make Benjamin Button a money-maker and with him on board here this film should be both a critical and box office hit. Whatever else it now becomes part of the conversation come the Oscars.

This win will give it a wider opening.. and HOW awesome to ride that win into the Premier on Tuesday..

  • Lara

So happy for Brad and Tree of Life, well done to everyone involved.

  • AWHODAT

Yeah asssshole. Brad gets mentioned because Terrence Malik sought him out when he was having problems getting production off the ground and so Brad’s Plan B became one of the producers of TOl.
    .
So yeah, producers get props. Moreover, Brad was more than just a producer and principal actor on the film – he has also been its main spokesperson.
    .
We know you stinking grudgeful biitches would like for Brad and Angie to disappear so you can pretend that all is well in ticky’s world but sorry, assshole, Brad and Angie are here to stay.

As Bob Marley says: “yuh a go tyaad fi see mi face!” Translation: youre gonna be seeing me even in your dreams, biitches!

Jean Dujardin is the best actor, I’m so happy for him, he deserves it even if i don’t see The Artist, he deserves it at least for his carreer, you have to watch Contre-enquête (so powerful) and also who can forgot Un gars, Une fille? lol #chouchouetloulou4ever!!!!!!

  • botoxic pitt

he didn’t win best actor. he’s always in decent movies but he’s never the best actor. A silent film actor beat him. lmao

Brad Pitt’s Movie Wins Top Prize in Cannes

Brad Pitt’s Movie Wins Top Prize in Cannes | Brad Pitt

    Brad Pitt

As the 64th Cannes Film Festival came to a close Sunday, its jury awarded the top prize to a movie that split the critics: director Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

Jury president Robert De Niro made the announcement, while the reclusive Malick was not in the French town to accept his Palme d’Or (Golden Palm).

The festival is finally over, the awards given. It was the strongest selection in years, and I saw more of the competition films than usual. Who came out ahead and behind this year?

    Winners:
Fox Searchlight, Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life, and Brad Pitt. The Palme d’Or gives this head-trip of a movie a much-needed boost in the direction of becoming a must-see for cinephiles and possibly more. Will it have wider impact? And Pitt was given chops for his best performance to date, demonstrating dramatic range and discernment.
