Orlando Bloom: Legolas in 'The Hobbit'!

It’s official: Orlando Bloom is reprising the role of Legolas for the upcoming film, The Hobbit!

“Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more,” director-producer Peter Jackson wrote on his Facebook page.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older – and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf,” he added.

Peter is reportedly shooting the two-part prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy in New Zealand.

ARE YOU EXCITED to see Orlando Bloom back as Legolas?

That’s terrible news. What a horrible actor. I’d bang him, though.

OMG Yesssssssss I’m sooooo excited to see Orlando as Legolas again :D Orlando is GORGEOUS but Orlando + Blonde Wig = WOW ;)

  • Wondering

Odd that he doesn’t do the Pirate films but will reprise a role in the Rings family of films…

  • Sean

LOL! Of course he is. He’s got no other films lineup. Horrible actor.

  • iamjealous

    Many people start jealous again.

@Wondering: Well LOTR is more beloved. Critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning…why are you shocked? The Pirates films gradually got worse and worse.

  • K.

Too bad Legolas wasn’t in The Hobbit… guess it’s a ploy to bring more people to the theaters.

  • jaye

Not impressed with Bloom as an actor overall, but the character Legolas, H*ELL YEAH! D*amn, why couldn’t he be an Elf for real lol.
As for doing the Pirate film, maybe no one asked him. He can say he wouldn’t have done another one, but that doesn’t mean anyone asked him. I sure wouldn’t have wanted him in the new movie, didn’t care for him in the others either.

  • :)

So excited that was the hottest elf ever

  • @K

Maybe, also there will be merchandising opportunities. New outfits, new weapons.

They’re writing all sorts of spurious characters into these Hobbit films. The Master of Laketown will have a sidekick and I believe Bard will have a son. They COULD use Legolas in a relatively sensible way though who knows if they will.

There will need to be some cool Elf action in the battles. Why give it to nameless characters or new characters that you’ve made up, when you can give it (or some of it) to an actor who looks like an elf and is good at action and is already popular as a real Tolkein character who would have been in Mirkwood at the time?

And the Elvenking may need someone to talk to when he’s planning his strategy, and making that person his son would be very typical of the things people do when adapting books into films.

I’m looking forward to it if they make him like he is in Fellowship and not drippy like they wrote him in Two Towers.

Orlando stated that he was done with POTC during press for the release of the third film. That franchise had been run into the ground, so good riddance.
For LOTR, on the other hand, Orlando has also said that he would “do anything” for Peter. Peter asks, Orlando willingly jumps.
And I’m sure that Peter is doing two things when he brings back characters that were not originally in The Hobbit. First, he is adding depth to the original story. After LOTR, everyone knew that Thranduil had a son, and now we will get to see them interact. Frodo, reading from the Red Book, brings Bilbo’s story to the LOTR timeline. Second, he is bringing back popular characters in hopes that their fans will follow. It’s a good way to introduce a new story, yet have continuity with LOTR.
I’m thrilled that we will have The Elf back! Absolutely thrilled!

  • Crittle

I don’t believe Legolas was in The Hobbit. So Booo, love him, but what’s the point, maybe it’ll be a small cameo

  • @13

Yeah, but Legolas would have been in Mirkwood at the time the Dwarves encountered the elves.

In the book there’s no need to name all the elves they see, they’re Dwarves and they have no idea who anyone but the Elfking is. But it’s a reasonable assumption that his son was one of the people they saw in the Elfking’s court and fighting in his battles, because that’s how it works in a royal family.

  • @13

Just because his character wasn’t named in The Hobbit, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t make perfect sense that he be there.
I can’t wait to see Orlando don those pointy ears again!

  • YES!

I’m so excited about this news!!
    CAN’T WAIT!!

I don’t get why he would want to do Pirates LOL Will and Elizabeth married and had a child so I don’t get why he would want that or vice versa they would want him Kiera and him made it clear they were both over with that THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! Why would they want anything to do with that mess ? They seemed pretty much over it by the third Pirates.

Yes, people are getting jealous again. My husband hates Orlando, because his wife and daughters love Legolas. I feel sorry for him, because I think he’s stupid, just like a jealous teen boy, although he’s over 40.

  • Vesper

I loved Orlando in LOTR. If Peter is going to rewrite the Hobbit, I wish he would also bring back Aragorn and Arwen, loved them too..

  • Mike

Legolas wasn’t in the Hobbit as Tolkien wrote it and the character is not germane to the story so he was cast in order to bring silly girls into the theater, which is a sad move on PJ’s part. Also, his time spent filming with turn into a promo trip for famewhroring wife and her crotch dropping because we all know that Bloom is not professional enough to keep the dam and her pup off the set while he’s working.

  • @Mike

Oh, you’re just upset that you and your fellow delphidiots (both of them) have been proved wrong once again.
Legolas was brought back out of common sense. Thranduil is king of ‘Mirkwood’. He has a son, named Legolas. The dwarves are held captive in Thraduil’s fortress. So logic stands that we would see Legolas, standing at his father’s right hand in court.
And it’s beyond stupid to claim that only “silly girls” would be happy that he is back. Legolas has a lot of male fans as well. They often refer to him as a “badass elf”.
Anyway, you once again have exposed some of the classic delphi hypocrisy…..
First you call him a has-been, who no one cares about anymore. Then you claim that PJ only brought him back to get his fans to watch the movie.
So which os it? Is he a draw for audiences? Or is he a nobody?
    He can’t be both.
And why wouldn’t he have his wife and child on set with him? Why shouldn’t he share this wonderful experience with them? Why shouldn’t he be able to hold his son in his arms during breaks? And how could it be famewhoring when it is on a closed set? You make no sense at all. As usual.
Was Viggo a famewhore for not only bringing his son on set, but allowing him to be in the movie? Or is that different because he isn’t Orlando, who you hold to a whole different set of ridiculous standards.
You guys sure do earn the name hypocrite, don’t you.

  • @Vesper

I loved Aragorn and Arwen, too.
Arwen could easily return. As an immortal elf, she would look the same as she did in LOTR. And even though Arwen spent a lot of time in Lorien, she was Elrond’s daughter so she could have been in Rivendell when Bilbo and the dwarves visited.
Aragorn was in Rivendell, too, but he would have been very young in The Hobbit. If they showed Aragorn, he would have to be re-cast as a child, or young man. However, if the second movie is really a bridge to LOTR, they could bring Viggo back as Aragorn. They would have to do some really creative make-up though. It has been 12 years since they started filming LOTR. Orlando looks like he has aged 5-8 years. Viggo looks like he has aged 20. Viggo is still handsome, but he looks older than his years.
Either way, I’m so excited about this movie!

  • @21

Frodo and Galadriel weren’t in The Hobbit either. Are you going to whine about them too?

  • @21

Calling an innocent baby a “crotch dropping”?
Well, I guess that says all we need to know about you, now doesn’t it.

  • YES!

I’m so glad that this news is official now!
It’s also nice to see that even sites that have a lot of pureists (sp?) as members seem to be behind this addition to the story.
I was worried about the addition of Frodo, more than the addition of Legolas. Legolas, as the king’s son, would have been beside his father in court and on the battlefield. Frodo wasn’t even born yet, was he? But I have a lot of faith in Peter Jackson. He loves these stories, so he will take good care of them.
I can’t wait for set pics to start popping up!

  • paige

    Peter Jackson is THE MAN!
I hope that we get a peek behind the scenes when Leggy arrives on set!

  • go peter

Finally Orlando is again in one blockbuster. I am tired of those independent movies. He will appeare a minute or two, but blockbuster is a blockbuster. P. Jackson knows how to make one.

  • @28

Blockbusters are great for getting his name out there. As we will see when The Three Musketeers premiers. Judging from pst press, he will be featured front and center for that promtional tour. Unless he is already in NZ in October.
But I’ve really enjoyed him doing smaller films, even going back to Haven. He was great as Shy, and fantastic as The Stain in Sympathy for Delicious. He seems to be able to spread his wings in indie movies, and I live it!

  • DOH!

#29 here….that should read ‘love it’, not “live it”.
Although he did force me to ‘live’ almost an entire day re-watching his scenes from Sympathy for Delicious on ‘On Demand’.
    Sooooo d@mned sexy!!

  • tosch

This was posted on the last Miranda thread, but I just had to bring it here since it was so good…..
“I saw that some of their members just got b*tchslapped.
One of their more intelligent, rational members (yes, there are two) came down on something that another member was doing.
I don’t know what they did, but it sure p*ssed off Wanda.
Evidently they did something to make the entire board look bad (imagine that), and she was tired of getting blamed for it.
Just as any board, it can be defined by their more extreme members. OLove is defined by the over the top blind devotion of one or two. Delphi is defined by their more vocal, more insane members…which is all but two, I believe
Anyway, at first she was supported, but as usual, it quickly went downhill. It went from people agreeing with her, to others claiming that it was shippers doing it to themselves, to all out attacks on the supposedly psychotc shippers who would do something so crazy.
I applaud you for trying Wanda. But your board is nothing but psychos, now. Maybe you should abandon ship before the rats get you, too.”
    Love it!

  • tosch

BTW, OLove has a link to some new pap pics of Orlando, Miranda, Flynn and the grandparents out to lunch yesterday.
Looks like Flynn has found his thumb.

  • http://justjared Mjforlife

I LOVE Orlando’s carer he has done it all:

    Big blockbusters

    Small movies

    A romantic comedy like Elizabethtown

He is a rare case in my opinion and it shows he can do it al and is a great actor no matter what two or three morons say I am proud to be a stan LOL .

  • micaelogelonononononononono

    @Delphic: you are definatly right

  • LOL!

Wanda may be one of their more intelligent members, but I wouldn’t call her rational.
Wasn’t she the one who staked out Miranda’s apartment in NY?
    Stalkers are never rational.
But at least she has a brain in her head. Even though it is a bit twisted.

  • Good move

The problem with those little independent-style films he’s been making of late is that scarcely anyone ever sees them. Yes, it could mean a chance for him to ‘shine’ and impress the critics with some possibly latent acting ability (something he failed to do in the big blockbuster hits), but unfortunately some of those seem doomed to languish out of sight without a distributor – or at best may be relegated to DVD release only. Another choice stint in a Peter Jackson extravaganza may at least get his name (and face) back before the public eye. IMO his most convincing performance, at least thus far, was as Legolas anyway. He fit that part very well.

  • Move on already

They are a strange lot who just need to let the Orlando of their dreams go. He’s never going to be the 22 year old that they fell in love with and aren’t at all interested in seeing him succeed anyway. I don’t know what they are still doing talking about him everyday. At least shippers are fans and it makes sense to follow someone you like. I don’t see the point of getting all up in the business of someone you dislike so much. You’d think by now they would have moved on like others have. Must suck to be stuck where they are. Sad.

  • @37

They have nothing left but their hate.
    Such sad, lonely, desperate lives.
