Russell Crowe: 'Circumcision is Barbaric and Stupid'

Russell Crowe has spoken out about circumcision on his Twitter account.

“Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature? Is it real that GOD requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect,” the 47-year-old actor wrote on Twitter on Thursday (June 9).

“I will always stand for the perfection of babies, i will always believe in God, not man’s interpretation of what God requires,” Russell continued.

“Last of it, if [you] feel it is [your] right 2 cut things off [your] babies please unfollow and f— off,I’ll take attentive parenting over barbarism,” he concluded.

WHAT DO YOU THINK of Russell Crowe’s argument against circumcision?

Good thing I don’t follow you on twitter…

Whoa, this guy seems really unstable…

# 3

way to insult two different religions

# 4

Well he is right. Unconsentual surgery is wrong. It is done according to the interpretation of God’s word.

Not to mention it doesn’t prevent masturbation, which is why it was introducted to N.A.

# 5

Ewww. Uncircumcised peens are gross. I can’t work em and they’re dirrrty. Plus they run and hide like a turtle when they’re soft. It’s gross!! Besides, I find it funny HE’s calling something barbaric

# 6

I’m inclined to agree with him….a bazillion Jews and Muslim’s won’t be.

# 7

He’s not lying. I know it’s done for sanitary reasons and other reasons, but I’ve had the misfortune of seeing one done up close and personal and those poor babies.

# 8

Not to mention that he said that aborting an unborn baby is more appropriate than removing an infants foreskin.
This is not good PR in my opinion.

I’m cringing. He is going to regret saying that.

I can’t understand why anyone would be against circumcision. Especially someone in high regard like Russell Crowe. You can’t clean an uncircumcised ***** so you would go through life with a dirty *****. That’s nasty.

Don’t you hate when actors try to sound smart?

when you are the one who assists in the surgeries like i do- you will know that many babies pass out from the pain. infections are very common and there are complications in many cases.

@James: James, you should really know that being clean has nothing to do with circumcision. The information is out there.

There’s no logic in his unstable rant here. He says he doesn’t believe in man’s interpretation of God, but believes in God. Is he saying that only he knows what’s cool and uncool with God? How arrogant.

Just when I thought that he had changed! He can believe whatever he likes but he is a fool to give a public opinion on something which is connected to two major religions.

Apart from anything else, there is a lot of medical evidence to prove that circumcision is much healthier and that circumcised men are less prone to disease. The United Nations iniatiated various projects in Africa which include circumcising men to prevent AIDS – obviously they wouldn’t agree with Mr. Crowe. We should also remember that millions of baby boys are born with partial foreskins which would require that the rest be removed and this has nothing to do with their religion.

In other words, even famous actors should THINK before they speak or twitter. And why on earth would a man who has won an Oscar (or two) feel the need to twitter to his fans. That’s for the Kardashians.

@12: Looks like someone has a turtle

——————————————————————————-
I think that this is completely untrue. I am not saying that infections don’t happen, but they are rare.

My son and my grandsons were circumcised and they didn’t even cry. A surgeon (who is also a medical professor in a leading hospital) performed the procedure on my grandchildren and there were absolutely NO problems, no crying, nothing. I am not underestimating what could happen, I am just saying that if the parents are responsible and take a surgeon to carry out the circumcision, then it is a very simple procedure.

Russell was always one of my favourite actors but his big mouth is starting to bother me. I’m sure that within a couple of days he will be apologising and claim he was “misunderstood”.

@Camden: On the contrary, there are some modern Jews that don’t circumcise their babies and circumcision is NOT required in Islam but is allowed.

And by the way, why are so many people getting so worked up about parents making decisions for their children? Some of you treat it as some sort of abominable sin. How lazy have people become that they just kick back and let their children raise themselves. Do people truly believe their children know best or are they are just too cowardly to make decisions that their children may or may not like then or in the future?

I think he just got himself a new twitter follower.
He speaks truth and good sense.

It is not required in Islam, but in Judaism. There is a lot of pressure for Jews to do this and being Jewish, there is no other way. If our sons do not have this procedure they are not accepted as Jews.

I totally agree with him. Gender should never be the deciding factor between what is and is not a criminal act. It is a violation of federal law to merely draw a drop of blood from the genitals of a minor female child in the US. Boys deserve equal protection under the law. Circumcision harms every boy and the man he will become.

Jamie Poston-Benford @ 06/10/2011 at 12:41 am

@James: @James: The majority of men in the WORLD are intact, Russell Crowe being one of them. Foreskin is there for a reason, it is not a birth defect. I have never known an intact man who did not know how to clean himself. Of course if you do not wash it, it will smell. I have know cut men whom smelled nasty down there. To the person that says they are gross and that it hides when it is soft. No it is not gross and yes it is suppose to do that when it is soft. The main function of foreskin is protection, the glands(head) is not meant to be an external part of a mans most private area. It also aids in sexual pleasure. I am really sick and tired of men and women putting men whom are intact down because they have ALL of the natural body the way they are suppose to.

@Jasmine:

“What is “cool” and “uncool” with God” — how old are you exactly?
And here’s some food for thought: intelligence is “cool” with everybody.

As much as I agree with him, I can’t help but think of pots and kettles……

@CJLOVE23:

Can you be more of an idiot?
Better go “work” your uncircumcised P*++…

@lengela:

And who are the ones doing the not accepting?

@KarenG: Just curious…How am I harmed again?

Jewish penises are very ugly. I’m glad Russell has a brain.

I am in total agreement with him and support the movement to ban circumcision. There is no acceptable reason to cut off healthy, functioning parts of another human being. Religious rights end at YOUR OWN body. MAJOR human rights violation! If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it!

I respect my child enough to protect his right to genital integrity. He has the freedom to choose what form he wants HIS genitals in as an adult. He STILL HAS THAT OPTION. When you circumcise a child – all it does it remove their choice.

I have MANY Jewish friends that DID NOT circumcise their sons. They’ve had a Bris/Brti Shalom instead. No cutting. I also find it completely asinine those bringing up religious rights regarding circumcision. Baby girls can’t be circumcised(not even type 1 FGM which is a tiny pin prick to the clitoris) here in the U.S. for religious reasons so why should it be OK for boys to be cut up? Both deserve equal protection.

The majority of the world does NOT circumcise and don’t have “issues” with their WHOLE penises. The U.S. needs to get over its fetish with cutting the genitals of children.

im thinking he is entitled to his opinion

@Matthew: I know you weren’t responding to me but I think the shunning is from the rest of the Jewish community. They take it very seriously. You can’t actually live as a Jewish man without being circumsised. If you are converting to Judaism you have to have it done.

postwatcher @ 06/10/2011 at 1:03 am

I agree with Russell.

Bravo Mr. Crowe! Not only do you have an intact ***** you also have balls!

Thanks for speaking out. The comments here about Ewe yuk all that skin show the ignorance behind the most heinous child sexual abuse. Forced genital cutting of children is ending because people are getting informed and speaking out.

Thank you!

@43:
You are wrong.

Increasing numbers of Jewish parents are protecting the genital integrity of their boys and naming them without cutting them. Google Brit Shalom for more info.

@43: And I find that despicable. You should accept people for who they are, not what parts they have.

circumcision should not be considered a religious debate. cleanliness is not completely possible when a man is uncircumcised (not to mention the fact that men don’t bother to clean themselves nearly as well as women do while bathing). plenty of medical research shows that women who sleep with uncircumcised men have a higher risk of vaginal and cervical cancer than women who do not. from my own personal experience with this issue i believe that circumcision is a good idea. my little brother was not circumcised as an infant. he was constantly in and out of the pediatrician’s office throughout his first eight years of life because of various painful infections of his ***** due to his foreskin. finally he was forced to get circumcised at the age of 8 due to the constant infections and it was a major surgery that required 1-2 weeks out of school. babies, especially newborns, heal extremely quickly. the baby will not remember the pain and i don’t believe that there is anything cruel or barbaric about it especially if it saves them from more pain and suffering later.

@Austin:

You call him “unstable” because he speaks up for the human rights of children to their body integrity? Get educated. Forced circumcision is a sexual violation of infants and children.

not to mention that foreskin is useless in modern human males. there is no true necessary function for it. its practically a vestigial structure.

Wow, was Russell DRUNK yet again? How dare he insult so many parents? Sorry, but everyone should know for themselves. How dare mr Crowe pretend he and he alone speaks for god. I knew he was insane, this just proves it more.

@lala:

Sorry lala your comment is sexist and ignorant. Human genitals are easy and fun to clean. Cutting part of a baby’s ***** off to achieve “cleanliness” is barbaric and cruel.

AMEN! So glad to hear a man speaking out on a man’s right to choose for himself what is done to his body. What a courageous man!!!

@James Loewen: You have to admit though… The man’s a bit unstable ;)

@Celia:

Those “sanitary reasons” and “other reasons” are pathetic excuses for perpetrating a serious form of sexual abuse.

Am i the only one thinking it’s strange that Russel Crow has twitter? I’m like in shock.

Russellcrowe Russell Crowe
@
@BarackMcBush Hygenic? Why don’t you sew up your ass then?

HAAH @ this tweet.

Good on ya Russell – it’s about time that more celebs spoke out about this gross violation of fundamental human rights.

And suddenly I’m a fan of his. I think it’s great, what he wrote. I completely agree with him.

@James Loewen: No actually you are wrong. Just because a small percentage of the Jewish community has chosen to ignore this requirement, does not mean the majority of Jews don’t do this procedure.

@Ruth: So explain to me why the country with the highest circumcision rate also has the highest HIV rate in the world? Only something like 15% of men in Europe(as well as babies being born these days) are circumcised and yet their rates are nothing like here in the United States. Over 85% of men all over the world are uncircumcised and yet the place that does it the most has the highest rates of STI’s? What the hell? It should also be noted that in 2009 the circumcision rate in medical facilities was something like 45%(which overrall is 55%)

There is no evidence to even suggest circumcision is better. If you’re for circumcision that’s fine. It’s not my business. But don’t act all self righteous when you’re clearly just an ignorant moron who has no idea what she’s talking about. I believe it’s you that should think before you speak.

@43: And hopefully that will change in coming generations. It’s too bad it has to take that long.

First time I’ve liked the guy.

@Chris-
“Not to mention that he said that aborting an unborn baby is more appropriate than removing an infants foreskin.
This is not good PR in my opinion.”

He did not say that, you twat. You are deliberately twisting his words. He said that abortion should be a woman’s decision – just like it should be a man’s decision to get circumcised WHEN HE IS AN ADULT. This decision should not be made for him as an infant or teen.

As always, I applaud Russell for speaking his mind.

@lala – the male foreskin has no use in MODERN human males? Are they differently built than ancient ones, then? LOL Please educate yourself on the use of the make foreskin (you only have to go back to the first comments page for that) before you spew any more of your BS.
And I don’t think that anybody (not even Russell) has anything against circumcision for medical reasons, as in the case of your little brother. You are completely missing the point.

@James:

It is not hard to keep and uncircumcised ***** clean. i am uncirc and it takes me all of a min in the shower.

Russell is sooo frickin’ right on this it’s not even funny!

To whoever thumbed down “You have to admit though… The man’s a bit unstable ;)”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Crowe#Altercations

@CJLOVE23:

They are only dirty when the people who own them, don’t keep them clean. I keep mine clean and my girlfriend loves it.

MAXIMUS! MAXIMUS!

Finally some Big names fighting for what’s right!

Pedophile Sadists and religious sexual assault apologists be damned!

People are speaking out against Male Genital Mutilation! Your sick sexual fetish for taking knives to the gentials of baby boys won’t be happening for too much longer you SICK FREAKS!

@Matthews – draggin up Russell’s “altercations” is so last decade….*yawn*

@Matthew – dragging up Russell’s alleged “altercations” is so last decade…..*yawn*

The male prepuce has so many functions, protective and sexual. I think the majority of Americans have no idea how much is actually lost. A man will be lacking 15 square inches of highly erogenous specialized tissue, folks. Intact guys and their partners know all of the benefits, keeping babies intact should be a no-brainer.

It amazes me that jewish people still participate in this. And the stupidity they use to justify it.

James – you stupid man….life is going to be long and hard

Gotta agree, but he left out the most important point – no-one has the right to alter another person’s body without their consent – let a guy make up his own mind when he’s of age. And as for the religious aspect, a covenant with God should be about your own body and your own beliefs, not forcing them on a helpless infant. If we were serious about freedom of religion we would be allowing little girls to have sunat performed on them like in Malaysia – ( excision of the clitoral hood), not screaming about doctors suggesting a pinprick to draw a drop of blood from the clitoris to satisfy ritual requirements.

Many Jews now have the Brit Shalom for their sons, which is a religious naming ceremony at 8 days of age without circumcision.

As the wife and mother of intact males I would have to say that hygiene and health has never been an issue! Have people never heard of showers?

@CJLOVE23: Dirty people are dirty. A man with an intact ***** who washes himself is not dirty. Better to be soft and sensitive than a dried-up, scarred mushroom.

@hmmm: Religions that require you to chop off pieces of your child deserve to be insulted.

@James: It’s a shame your parents didn’t teach you how to wash. My kids know what soap and water is.

groundcontrol @ 06/10/2011 at 1:56 am

Poor Russell. He’s trying everything he can to get back on the radar.
.
But he’s right.
.
There are no general medical or hygienic reasons for circumcision. There are also no credible studies applicable to the developed world that show any need for circumcision.
.
And poor James, if you can’t figure out how to properly clean an uncircumcised ***** then you are all kinds of stupid – or just disgustingly lazy.
.
If any father thinks circumcision is such a great idea then offer your own up for a little more trimming. Otherwise keep your hands off your son’s *****. It does not belong to you.
.

I wouldn’t say RC is unstable. He does have a very short fuse.

@James Loewen It is the way that he said it. It is one thing to have an opinion and it is another to offend millions of people by the way you say something. Get educated? Really? Are we 12 years old and using our parent’s computer? Grow up James.

You tell ‘em, Russell. You ROCK.

And Lengela, how dare you imply our normal, perfect sons are less Jewish because as ethical, moral, humane persons, we didn’t have genital mutilation performed upon their infant bodies. Our sons are going to stop this cycle of abuse.

Slavery lasted longest in the US in the Western world, as has circumcision. But it too will pass & be remembered along with paterfamilias as something once thought ‘right’ by culture & now known to be a cruel, unnatural human rights violation.

You have to love the internet. A place where people can say what they want without consequence. As a practicing Jewish woman, I can say that many of the people commenting here are rude and offensive. What happened to respect and consideration?

@CJLOVE23: Dirty people are dirty. A man with an intact ***** who washes himself is not dirty. Better to be soft and sensitive than a dried-up, scarred mushroom.
——-
I was going to say that! When a man can’t (doesn’t know how to) clean himself, he is dirty, circumcised or not. I agree with RC!

I can’t imagine how I would feel if half of the densely innervated tissue from my genitals had been taken away without my consent, when I was too little to fight back and then grow up to discover that not only was it medically unnecessary, it was a complete violation of my basic human right to bodily integrity.

I can see why there are men out there who are angry about what was done to them. I imagine there must be frustration about society’s lack of empathy, lack of interest, and absolute discrimination towards them. On wonders how long they will have to wait before a male’s right to a whole and healthy body is protected.

Amazing that this is being discussed as “barbaric and stupid” yet abortion is fully acceptable. Outlaw circumcision and allow abortion, you people have lost your minds. If you allow abortion, you better damned well allow circumcision!!!

I’m circumcised and very happy to be so.

Last time I checked, male circumcision only affected one body: the male whose pen!s it is. Fundamental human rights protect bodily integrity for all humans. Abortion is a murkier issue since there are two bodies involved.

@lengela:

Until enough Jews have the courage to say “this barbarism stops with me”

If you don’t have anything to compare it to, I can see how a circumcised man might believe he was happy with his lot in life.

It’s like the fella who has 20/20 vision but is colour-blind. He can see, sure, but he is missing all the richness and vibrancy that colour brings.

Good article (recommended by The British Medical Journal) http://www.cirp.org/library/sex_function/

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Celebrities-Against-Circumcision/194824483872404

Come show support here, where he has been named ‘Profile of the Week’ (and joins Ben Affleck, Pamela Anderson, John Leguizamo, Salmon Rushdie, Virginia Madsen, Christopher Hitchens, Penn & Teller, Howard Stern, Gordon Ramsey, Dolph Lundgren, Craig Ferguson, Luke Doucet, Ben Cohen, Tony Hawk, and an ever-growing cast of celebrities with the gonads to speak out.

It’s GREAT that celebs are speaking out against this human rights violation. Infant circ needs to go!

he also says, “Abortion should always be a woman’s choice, there is no benefit to “forced” motherhood…you got it?”
no one is forcing anyone to undress and have sex to create that baby, why don’t you educate yourself first, learn safe sex or better yet wait and fall in love with someone you want to have kids with! There is no circumstance ever where abortion is acceptable.. its murder, killing an infant up to 9 months in the womb is accepted today and its sick.. where as killing an infant within 2 mins of being born, oh the horror! It is the same thing. All life is precious~ If you are not ready to be a mom or dad, don’t have sex! Its not punishment, its what you do if you want (or are open to the possibility) of having a baby I wish more people thought of it this way! Love people, LOVE

I haven’t admired RC since The Sum Of Us because of his short temper, but this greatly redeems him in my eyes.

And he’s not driven by antisemitism (as Mel Gibson might have been): “During location filming of Cinderella Man, Crowe made a donation to a Jewish elementary school whose library had been damaged as a result of arson.[24] A note with an anti-Semitic message had been left at the scene.” – Wikipedia.

hahahahaha
russell looks smelly. he should be circumsized too

He’s absolutely right. There’s no medical justification for it, and it causes a lot of irrepairable damage to unlucky babies. It is barbaric. Doctors just push it on parents because they profit off it.

YES!!!! Good on him for stating the truth!!!! The Jewish say they are religious, yet continue to undo God’s perfect work, with their barbaric acts of circumcision. Let a person decide for themselves if they want this done to them, or not.

The timeless battle rages on, its the anteaters vs the helmetheads

Good for him for speaking up for babies who can’t speak for themselves. Circumcision IS barbaric and stupid.

i wasn’t a fan before but i am now!!! thank you for speaking up for all the babies that can’t speak up for themselves.
as far as the other comments, i cant read them all but if anyone cares to, simply google “circumcision deaths” and see how much information there is out there. no, its not such a rare condition….and other problems such as castration. Its not just a “simple little nick”…its much much worse than that.
i can say that after having my first 2 sons circumcised…luckily i began to research this issue while pregnant with my 3d son. no 3 and no 4 are intact….YOU CAN HAVE SONS WITH DIFFERENT PENISES!!! IT IS OK!
for those who are wondering “what is the big deal”…please research this issue. The rate of circumcision in the US is falling way below the 50% it used to be…..when our babies are older and in the locker rooms, they will be the majority (INTACT), not minority.
BTW, I am a Jewish mom who decided to not circumcise my 2 youngest…this isn’t impossible for many Jews to contemplate.

Russell Crowe is so ignorant he is embarrassing. He knows nothing of what he speaks. Maybe he should speak to thousands and thousands of Jewish Men who have been and no issues at all have ever come of it. EVER. Geez it’s true most actors are just dumb f–ks.

All I know is, first guy I ever attempted to go to third base with was circumsphere and not only did it smell bad but it was dirty/slimy and he had taken a shower after football practice that day so its not like he had bad hygiene . so no Russell. Maybe in Australia/UK where circumcision isn’t the norm and women don’t know any bettter….but here in the US, expect your kid to be remembered as “smelly d*ck” by whatever 15 year old girl has the misfortune of (almost) getting down with him at.

*circumsized, not circumsphere. damn autocorrect

circumcised, not circumsphere. damn autocorrect

I totally agree with him. I used to think that circumcision is important because of our culture in the Philippines that almost 95% of men is circumcised. Now that i live here in Europe and circumcision is not common here, it makes me realized that indeed you want the babies to be all natural.

I totally agree with him. I used to think that circumcision is important because of our culture in the Philippines that almost 95% of men is circumcised. Now that i live here in Europe and circumcision is not common here, it makes me realized that indeed you want the babies to be all natural.

That was a very stupid comment! Its obvious he’s walking around with a foresk!n! That is just gross!
Circumcision is also good for hygienic purposes and also reduce chances of getting easily infected with HIV…(I feel sorry for whoever suck his d!ck)

@Sarla – there`s still one glaring mistake in your sentence.

And I’m sorry to have to tell you, but even though that boy may have just taken a shower, but he obviously still didn’t know how to properly clean himself. He was, in more than one sense, a dirty boy. He obviously didn’t care enough about his body hygene, and not even going out with you could change that. Says a lot about him….and you for putting up with it.
To go from this one experience, no matter how unpleasant it was, to sayging that all uncircumsized p**** are always dirty, just goes to show how immature you are.

How about ear piercing babies Mr. Crowe? Or any kid for that matter? Is that stupid and barbaric too?

@hmmm:

Religion is the greatest insult to humanity.

@Jasmine:

Any solid proof there is a god? No. Then STFU.

he is entitled to his opinion as long as its restricted to his himself and his kids

Those who practice circumcision limit it to family…havent heard of strangers running around with scapels in mall of america asking for a foresking donation….

Till that happens just remember that Circumcision is

1- a religious act
2-cultural and traditional in some part of Africa and middle east
3-removal of the foreskin in a protection against HIV

However I also believe in a PERSONS right to choose. Well babies cant choose and parents serve as guardians so I cant even jump into this argument

Male circumcision does not cause as much issues as female circumsion which is designed purposely to control the female and with medical problems down the line…so a little bit of male foreskin doesnt hurt much 30 years after the fact.

Interesting how a god, a moronic god, needs newborns’ foreskin, our money, our virginity and what not. Use ur brain, sheeple!

@Jenna:

The truth hurts, baby?

he’s just an attention seeking idiot

@J:

Who are u to tell other ppl/women what to do? Most religious morons do that, so STFU again and get back on ur knees to do what u do best. Natural and normal things – like abortion – have been demonized by religion in order to take a better control of the people.

how come he does not apply the same principles to

1- abortion
2-plastic surgery
3-tumors

this guy is hilarious but just another celeb blowing his mouth off\
remember Jenny and her autism crusade..seems the doctor doctored his data…lol

Well i believe everyone is entitled to their opinion i dont agree or diagree with what he say’s however i believe that some religions and cultures do this therefore he shoulld respect that but not everyone will agree with his opinion on the matter but its freedom of speech. I believe if its in your religion or culture then thats your decision to make and people should respect that.

If circumcision was part and parcel of Islam the Libs would tell us we need to be tolerant of their religion. But since their Jews its okay to insult their religion and run them out of town. Anybody for this law should also except they are racist against jews

@AK: actually circumcisim is a part of islam as well and sometimes it has nothing to do with religion a friend of mine got her son cirumcised and she doesnt follow any religion she said she did it for health reason so people cirumcise and sometimes it has nothing to do with religion

I see that the anti-circumcision lunatics have hit this board and all moderate comments have been hidden by them.

It would have been better if Crowe had spoken out against female circumcision which is barbaric. His comments about circumcision of Jewish baby boys is bordering on antisemiticism and are at best tasteless. He obviously forgets that the United Nations has undertaken mass circumcisions of men and boys in Africa to combat AIDS and millions of non-Jewish children have been circumcised for many different medical reasons. Many American children are circumcised at birth and the parents can opt out if they wish to do so. There are states where the rate reaches 60% and these children are NOT JEWS. The medical profession in the USA, the most advanced in the world, obviously believes that the procedure helps to combat many diseases and for that reason supports the wide-spread circumcision of boys.

As a Jew I believe that those parents wishing to circumcise their week old baby sons have the right to do so. My two beautiful grandsons were operated on by a top surgeon who undertook the procedure which took about two minutes. No pain, no suffering, no after effects – nothing.

He should really stick to acting and watch his mouth.

@Camden: @Jamie Poston-Benford:

TOTALLLLLY AGREE WITH YOU!!! You couldn’t have said it any better!!

@Jasmine:

You have some major points there.

This is why we abandoned it in Europe decades ago.

@Ruth:

He has every right to voice his opinion. You just did. If we went back to worshipping the Greek, Roman and Egyptian gods, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in right now with this religion saying they’re better than the other. Religion has been the number one cause of wars and hatred since time began. My friends who are Jewish are not considered Jews by the Hasidic Jewish community. Now tell me what’s up with that? Russell has major points in his statement and I applaud him for expressing his opinons. Some people may not like it, but it’s his right.

@Ruth – Russell voices his opinion and gets a lot of support, you don’t like that and immediately play the antisemitic card. How pathetic. Only makes you sound defensive.

@Thai:

Let’s see……….Crusades? Yeah, like they were really following the will of God? Man has used religion for wars, greed, and sheer hate for others. Someone once said, “If you want to make millions, start a religion”.

@anon:

Russell didn’t say anything about Jews or Muslims. Give me a break!!

It is a horrible practice. Totally barbaric, just a religious practice that should be banned everywhere. Since when is it acceptable to mutilate helpless babies who don’t have a voice of their own as to whether they want this done to them or not. They can decide at 18 if they want this done.

Well, let me tell you bỉtches that I’ve sucked many miles of ċock, and cut is the only way to go.

In fact, circumcision should be compulsory, not optional.

I used to be a fan but this is really quite ignorant and sad. Most people don’t get their babies circumsized for religious reasons – it’s for 1) good hygiene and 2) prevention of diseases – HIV, certain cancers including penile. Russ, please do your research next time.

i AGREE WITH RUSSELL

he criticizes the jewish not the muslim people, because muslims dont do the circumicision to their babies, they wait until they get older.. and they dont do it as a “donation”

From Paris with Love @ 06/10/2011 at 9:49 am

This is almost only a debate in the US. In Europe, nobody except for Jews and Muslims is circumsized. I mean more than 95% of men are not circumsized, it’s not even something that crosses the population’s mind. So does that mean that in Europe the rates of infections and diseases are through the roof or higher than in the US? I doubt it haha. That is all religious and cultural BS.
.
As for the hygienic reason I think THAT is the grossest reason ever. So just because some men are lazy and incapable of cleaning themselves properly everyday they should just cut a piece of skin off?! Well let’s all cut off our labia and ears and belly rolls and under breasts and armpits because you know… any body part that has some kind of crease, fold, line, crack or cavity will stink if you don’t clean it DUH ! And let’s all shave our hair because you know if you don’t wash it it’s gross LOL
The lack of hygiene is the most stupid reason ever.

@swadde:

Where in his statement did he say “JEW”? READ WHAT HE SAID IDIOT!!!

I agree with him. I would never do that to my baby. The only time I did it is when he is older and it becomes uncomfortable for him. Why cause your baby unnecessary pain?

@Kate: Ridiculous ideas deserve ridicule. No one is insulting you personally. It’s just that you’re caught up in bronze-age dogma that should have died out millenia ago.

And for the record, that’s a different Matthew who commented about abortion… And the unstable comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek. Grow a sense of humor, people.

i see an apology message in 1, 2, 3,…

by his standards, you should not wear bifocal glasses or get hearing aids. afterall, it’s just mother nature’s way of saying you’re old and you shouldn’t correct in anyway.

@Piper: A foreskin isn’t a condition to be corrected.

So we’re going to make a big deal about circumsision ad say nothing about abortion? I think most little baby boys would rather miss a small part of themselves than be cold bloodily MURDERED by parents who just didn’t want them. Talk about destroying a perfect body? That is. Just shut up about circumcision Russell.

I agree with Russell. I would never circumcise a baby. If they really want it done when they are older then that is their decission. Their is nothing gross about an intact *****. Jamie Poston-Benford has said it best. It is protection for the glans. Not hard to keep clean either. It does fold back for washing. No big deal.

Ella @ 06/10/2011 at 9:25 am -4

Circumcision is not a a big practice or not a practice at all in most Asia countries. Tell me what is the cancer rate in those countries? Japan for instance, what is the % of men who has not been circumsized has HIV or diseases and/or cancer?

Go Russel! Not the best way to say it but I agree with the man.

simplesong4u @ 06/10/2011 at 10:44 am

Because I am a christian and I also fear God. I will follow what God has asked me to do. He will have to give account to God for disobeying God law. Plus it looks really nasty. As a female I would not want to be with anyone who is not circumcised.

Garrett Wolfe @ 06/10/2011 at 10:46 am

Excellent. Basic common sense. Medically unnecessary amputations create unnecessary risk, and on an infant, remove flesh AND the right of personal choice. Well done, Mr. Crowe!

I love how its completely barbaric to cut the foreskin off of the ***** of a boy who probably WONT keep it clean (what teenage boy do you know that is clean at ALL?), yet our society is totally ok with full term abortions? Or any kind of abortion for that matter. They certainly don’t mind if parents decide that. Since when do they care about babies? or unborn babies? This whole thing is hypocrisy, and I refuse to take anything these “celebrities” say and actually listen. I’m sorry, but this is ridiculous.

BARBARIC!!! What you don’t see in the hospital: it looks like a cutting board shaped like a gingerbread man. It has little straps at the wrists and ankles. Your precious little baby boy is laid on this gingerbread man contraption and and his little wrists are cinched my the wrist straps. The same is done with their little ankles. They cry because they are naked, cold, and uncomfortable. Then the real horror begins as the doctor begins to cut on your baby. The cry turns into a scream and their lips tremble uncontrollably. The “procedure” lasts a few minutes, but those minutes are nothing short of pure, unadulterated torture.

All parents that contemplate this ELECTIVE procedure should be REQUIRED to sit and watch a video of what circumcision entails.

Soft penises are not supposed to look aroused.

I absolutely agree with Russell. Circumcision is a violation of the babies rights hiding behing religions.

Well said! Thank you for being a voice of reason. Now get ready to be lumped together with Mel Gibson as an anti-Semite. Good luck- you’re goin to need it.

The foreskin is not useless. Search “Function of Foreskin and “The Lost List”.

Wow. You guys are awful. So much for “matter of opinion.”

YOU GO RUSSELT CROW. YOU ARE ABSOLUTLEY CORRECT. NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO ALTER GOD’S WORK. GOD MADE BABY BOYS WITH UNCERCUMCISED PENIES. —- END OF STROY. — PROBABLY, SOME OF THE ANTI RUSSEL COMMENTS ARE COMING FROM PEOPLE THAT CIRCUMCISED THEIR BABY BOYS AND NOW THEY FEEL BAD, BECAUSE THRE’S NOTHING THEY CAN SO ABOUT IT. WE HAVE A SON, AND WHEN HE WAS BORN, THE DOCTTOR ASKED US IF WE WANTED OUR PRECIUOS LITTLE DEFENSELESS BOY CERCUMCISED—WE SAID NO WAY.. WE ASKED THE DOCTOR IF HE WAS CRICUMCISED . HA FLATLY SAID, NO. NO.

I totally agree with Russell Crowe. As a victim of genital mutilation, I don’t want anyone else to suffer as I have. We need a worldwide end to genital mutilation of children.

11Bravo1P @ 06/10/2011 at 2:40 pm

@CJLOVE23:

“run and hide like a turtle when they’re soft” — Have you ever considered that if they’re soft around you, then the guy isn’t the problem??

I’m a former Army Airborne Infantryman. I’ve spent up to about 60 days in the field without a shower and NEVER had a problem with my uncut *****. This was all while protecting your rights as a lazy American. You’re welcome.

Different-Time-Zone @ 06/10/2011 at 3:07 pm

Happy to know that Russell belongs to the uncut ones. He is right: did God make a mistake? Why would a religious person want to “correct” a body?

People believing that a cut man looks nicer should think about the century old Chinese practice of foot binding, done because small feet were considered cuter. This practice was outlawed in 1949.

Cut is not cute!

A growing fraction of North Americans think more or less as Crowe does. The circ rate is down to 20-30% in Canada (zero in some provinces) and about 50% in the USA (25% in California). There are parents of Jewish ancestry who no longer circumcise, and there are Jews who are eloquent critics of circ.

Last century, millions of baby boys were done without anesthesia — utterly barbaric. Not injecting lidocaine remains a common practice. Europe, Japan, and New Zealand do not circumcise routinely. In Australia and Canada, it’s a minority thing. To think that hundreds of millions of parents in these nations are all clueless about hygiene, and sexual health and propriety, strikes me as rather arrogant. American routine circumcision now looks suspiciously provincial.

I have major difficulties with the fact that the consequences of infant circ for adult sexuality, including PE, ED, damaged erections, and propensity to use condoms, have not been researched. There is a lot of evidence, mostly anecdotal but some clinical, that women who have experienced both kinds of men prefer those with all the factory installed moving parts, thank you. It is not hard to discover what I write here during the course of a day or two of web browsing.

Many people in Tinseltown privately agree with Crowe, simply because Tinseltown is in California where the overall circ rate is way down, intactivism appeals to idealists, celebrities tend to be idealists. Opposing circumcision may brass off some Jewish movers and shakers in Hollywood, but gets you friends in another respected part of the showbiz set: gay men. The large gay communities in coastal USA are quite foreskin friendly.

The spearhead of intactivism is concerned mothers, especially the crunchies. And I would not be surprised if Mrs Crowe has bought into the intactivist argument, and shared her thoughts with Russell. It is an amazing fact that most of what I have read on the net pro and con foreskin has been written by women of childbearing age. Cutting off part of the genitalia of a newborn boy strikes more and more American women as cruel and sexually bizarre. Crowe’s impolitic remarks may brass off some Jews and Moslems, but will be roundly applauded by many young women around the English speaking world.

If Crowe said that he approves of abortion on demand while also detesting circumcision on demand, I agree that that stance challenges common sense (like quite a few intactivists, I deplore abortion as well), but I also predict that millions of Americans and Canadians on the left think in precisely that fashion, as has a growing fraction of the American progressive chattering class.

@Matthew: Beg your pardon, but there is belief that cancer is prvented in the ***** when some are circumcised.

Is there ANYBODY in the world (except Russel Crowe) who CARES what Russel Crowe thinks?

It puzzles me when he states ” i will always believe in GOD, not man’s interpretation of what God requires” and yet he completely contradicts himself by saying “Circumcision is barbaric and stupid”. Whether Crowe has read the Holy Bible I do not know. But it states clearly enough for anyone who is a follower of the one true GOD in Genesis 17 why and how christians and Jews have an everlasting covenant with God. God is never changing and HE is the same during Abrams time as HE is now in our lives. It was God himself who appeared before Abram (before he was named Abraham) and spoke of circumcision. Crowe may think he is defending what ever religion and God he speaks of, I am assuming Christianity, but he is actually doing exactly the opposite. It was not man who required circumcision but GOD and by worshiping and obeying him HE blessed us with nations and said HE will be our GOD. I could probably argue all day long about this and others things man (including myself) are so blind to see. But God is never wrong for He is perfect. “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

I clicked on this expecting him to get bashed, haha. I do agree.

i cant believe people are spending this much time and energy on this …. there are more important things … like has joe jonas come out of the closet or not :P

What about Taylor Lautner and Zac Efron?

de Cosmos @ 06/10/2011 at 6:08 pm

There used to be a long list of Hollywood endowments and circumcision status.

Does anyone have a recent version?

It is actually healthier and people do it for sanitary reasons- not just religious. It was also found to reduce the chance of catching an infected disease.
.
Babies who are tongue-tie get a part of their skin cut.
We cut a part of the skin that is attached to the umbilical cord.
.
We cause babies pain when we give them shots/ immunization.
.
Where they born “perfect”? yes, but medical and sanitary reasons always had us do some medical things to babies.
.

@Celia: After all, there’s always bath water to take care of what little “hygiene” is needed.

longchamp @ 06/10/2011 at 9:43 pm

no cut = cuts the number of chicks he’ll get to be with. it’s just not cute, sexy, or clean. good luck w/that.

@Jenna:

Jenna, how could you possibly know that? And how do circumcised Jews look different from their gentile American and Canadian counterparts? And it could be that Jewish men compensate for the fact of circumcision by greater skill with their mouths and/or hands. at any rate, the ***** is not designed to appeal to your eyes or mine. It is designed to make its owner, and his chosen lady, FEEL good. That the intact ***** does rather well. How dysfunctional the circumcised ***** is, we don’t really know yet. It is very likely that circ damage varies widely across individuals, with only a minority being seriously impaired. But that minority is ample reason to abandon the practice.

@Ruth:

Female circ is illegal in the west, hence no reason to linger over it.

His comments about circumcision of Jewish baby boys is bordering on antisemiticism and are at best tasteless.
ME. He should have focused on the routine circumcision of American gentiles, the vast majority of circumcision performed in the USA.

He obviously forgets that the United Nations has undertaken mass circumcisions of men and boys in Africa to combat AIDS…
ME. Those campaigns are misguided and will backfire. They are based on clinical trials carried out in ways that make them a scientific scandal.

Many American children are circumcised at birth…
ME. Very very few parents have the urological or sexual sophistication required to make an informed choice here.

and the parents can opt out if they wish to do so.
ME. That was not true for much of the last century. Many boys, including my younger brother, were cut without their mother’s consent.

There are states where the rate reaches 60% and these children are NOT JEWS.
ME. The rate in some states has been over 85%. It is true that the vast majority of circs in the USA are not brises.

The medical profession in the USA, the most advanced in the world, obviously believes that the procedure helps to combat many diseases and for that reason supports the wide-spread circumcision of boys.
ME. This sentence is flat out wrong. The AMA and American Academy of Pediatrics does not endorse” circumcision. Rather, American medicine has declared the tender moving bits on the tip of the ***** to be optional, in that parents can elect to have those bits removed without giving a reason. The foreskin is the only part of the human body treated in this fashion.

As a Jew I believe that those parents wishing to circumcise their week old baby sons have the right to do so. My two beautiful grandsons were operated on by a top surgeon who undertook the procedure which took about two minutes. No pain, no suffering, no after effects – nothing.
ME. If lidocaine was not injected, they felt pain. Lidocaine is still not a common part of bris. The after effects we intactivists worry most about often do not manifest themselves until adult life or even middle age.

Who is he again? @ 06/11/2011 at 12:04 am

Obviously, westerners will oppose this. It’s not always about science, it has to with faith. and yes! Muslims, Christians (true Christians that is, sadly a few are left of it) and Jews, may never get along, but NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO QUESTION OUR FAITH. Is Russel even a christian? You just can’t just say, “OK! i believe in God, while the rest is my FREE CHOICE”….. doesn’t work that way. What is it like SCIENTOLOGY the new religion for these schmucks? LOSERS!!… any how something you won’t find the non-believers believeing…….
http://www.circinfo.net/

I agree with him to a degree… I am “pro choice” on this issue. Why not let your child decide when they are an adult if they want this kind of surgery? I have my foreskin, and was educated by my parents how to clean and take care of it in the bath tub as a young boy.

I have many friends who don’t have a foreskin and wish that they did – god made man with a foreskin for a reason, the same with tonsils and gaul bladders. I can see that you can live with out these 3 things, but why unnecessarily remove any of them, especially without connect?

I absolutely agree. If a boy wants to be circumsized, it should be his decision. There’s no reason for mutilating a baby’s genitals.

Thank you, Russel Crowe! You are right, nature/God does not make mistakes and we don’t have the right to amputate healthy functioning tissue from non-consenting children. As an RN, I have seen circumcisions done and it is a barbaric practice. 80% of the world’s men have their foreskins, lucky for them and their partners. His body, his choice!

Hotel del Coronado @ 06/11/2011 at 8:45 am

I agree with him . Removing a healthy tissue from a baby should be totally discouraged and parents should educate themselves better . Besides cleaning is so simple that it is laughable some people even question that . I see religion is yet again involved * roll eyes * in creating conflicts instead the opposite .

@Klime:
Wrong Wrong Wrong. Masturbation had nothing to do with circumcision. It was done for cleanliness. GOD is the one who instituted it on the 8th day after birth so if you think its stupid then tell Him his laws, commandmenets etc are stupid. Maybe He will just slap the tar out of you instead of killing you. Numbskull!

I see nothing controversial about Russell Crowe sharing his opinion! Nonetheless, telling us to f**k off if we didn’t agree was puerile. My kid brother had it done when he was about three, and there was a lot of pain and trauma. One of the best kept secrets here is that doctors sometimes “slip up” and the boy has to be raised as a girl. I decided that since I have no religious obligations, I wasn’t going to do this to my son.

@J:

So you think a woman who is raped and then gets pregnant should have to have that baby? So you would force her to have a baby even though she was not a willing participant in the sex act? Really?

@simplesong4u:

When a guy has an erect pen!s it doesn’t look that much different. Get over it!

Actually, the circumcision covenant was between the Jews and God as a covenantal sign of their relationship.

Circumcision is NOT destructive. I can’t believe people get so worked up over it. Morons in San Francisco have nothing better to do than to try to get it outlawed.

Of course, they do nothing to try to eliminate “Up Your Alley” and other events too base to discuss here. Right, but circumcision is the enemy.

While we’re at it, I don’t recall ONE unborn baby EVER giving permission to the other to kill it…

My brother and I have been debating this for years. We even made a short film about it: http://zellnerbros.com/aftermath-on-meadowlark-lane/

PAULA HAMILTON @ 06/11/2011 at 1:55 pm

RUSSELL IS ABSOLUTLY RIGHT! IN THIS DAY AND AGE IS A TERRIBLE THING TO DO TO OUR BABIES. MY SONS ARE INTACT AND GRATEFUL THEY ARE!

Good fo him. Anyone and EVERYONE is allowed to have an opinion. He can think whatever he wants and he’s allowed to use his constitutionally guaranteed rights of free speech. If you don’t likehis opinion then take his advice and don’t follow him anymore. Gee, that was a hard to figure out.

blondeness032 @ 06/11/2011 at 6:19 pm

I think EVERY parent should research this subject and then make their own decision. Just because someone made some movies does NOT make them an expert.

I also agree with Russel. I am happy to say I’m not circumcised, and am so glad that my mother made that decision. I would never allow this to happen to my child. My mother has told me that people she knows have decided against the procedure for their children, and without their consent, the doctor performed this anyway. I can safely say that if my doctor were to do that, his first concern would be me breaking his face, to see how he enjoyed his unnecessary surgery. And let me be clear, I don’t care what a single females opinion is on the subject, because I support a woman’s choice to have an abortion, so if a woman wants to oppose my feelings on my male genitalia, then shame on her. Would you support the African cultural practice of removal of the labia on female children? I doubt it.

maliciousboy @ 06/11/2011 at 6:31 pm

Totally agree with Crowe. He shouldn’t apologize at all.

Saw a video of a circumcision before my first son’s birth, NO WAY would I put a kid through that. It’s as stupid as female circumcision.

People will get bent out of shape if you clip a dog’s tail or ears, but they want to chop up newborns.

If your religion tells you to — go for it I guess. I don’t believe in that hogwash.

If you’re doing it for hygiene, just teach you kid about soap and water and they’ll have no problems.

To those who say it looks weird, no — it looks natural. Get used to reality.

@Nathan:

Hey Nathan (#176): I watched the 10-minute movie you and your brother made. It’s fantastic! Thank you for sharing, and I definitely encourage everyone else to check this out. It’s funny as hell, but certainly not out of the realm of possibilities. One of the things I get out of this is that we really do need to THINK more and talk more about this topic. Again, Nathan put link on message #176. Thanks, guys.

Herb Ernst @ 06/11/2011 at 6:51 pm

I think that what really bothers me is that this practice is performed on the most innocent and most helpless of all human beings — infant children.

If someone wants to mutilate their genitals, let them make the conscious CHOICE for themselves; don’t superimpose your choice on someone who never mutilated your genitals.

Ozymandias @ 06/11/2011 at 7:47 pm

I agree with Russell Crowe, that circumcision is, for the majority of male babies, unnecessary and barbaric. This procedure has long been controversial and frankly anyone assisting with a circumcision will realize at once that it is gravely traumatic for the baby. The times when circumcision might be necessary will be exceedingly rare and can be almost eliminated by parents teaching their boys good hygiene practices. Some horrendous complications have left children in a limbo between genders…that is simply not an acceptable outcome. Some Rabbi’s no longer circumcise but have instead developed a symbolic ritual to supplant the actual cutting of the foreskin. An intelllgent, well informed, and humane approach to an archaic practice that has no place in the world today.

He is entitled to his opinion, people stop making a mountain out of a mole hill!

Here, here, Russel Crowe, personally I’m glad he expressed his opinion and I agree ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. Don’t appologize or backstep for something you believe in, especially when it comes to the welfare of a child. Man was made this way for a specific reason, it’s not like it’s an anomaly like an extra appendage or something that needs to be taken off . However, if parents choose circumcision for religious reasons, so be it, I’m fine with that, but I don’t personally think it’s necessary. And for those of you who think it’s nasty… when you actually take care of yourself it’s no different than a man who is circumcised. If from a young age you’re taught to pull back the skin regularly it basically stays back and looks much like a circumcised man, so I guess it’s just personal choice, well for the parents anyhow.

@Jasmine:

What?
That’s a strange assumption made from parents choosing not to circumcise their little boys.
It doesn’t make parents lazy, and it doesn’t mean that they’re going to let their children do everything they want, for themselves.
It means that they want their children to have their genital integrity.
Well, general integrity.

Don’t you think it’s lazy of parents to not want to teach their children general hygiene?

Mother: “Make sure to clean behind your ears, your armpits, and your foreskin, or you’ll stink!”

Son: “Moooomm!!”

Mother: *phew* “That was unbearably hard. I should have just cut off a part of my son’s *****, so I wouldn’t deal with telling him that.”

I think it’s silly, also, when people talk about the benefits from the lowered chance of getting an STD.
I mean, aside from the fact that it’s a quack study, considering America has the highest rates of STDs…
Umm…hello?
Condoms?

They should be wearing them anyway.

Imran Khan @ 06/13/2011 at 12:46 am

@lala:

Beyond the fact the story about your brother is an utter lie, you are an absolute moron. End of story.

from Fabian capstone TOOL —Russell Crowe.

Putting his mediocre and worse offering of the past few years,
in this the 11th hour of Globalist RED China sellout, set up and
TREASON (esp in Australia) –this Crowe’s a chicken…

Sorry, but surgically altering your baby’s genitals for life is revolting. Russel had it right.
Now penile cutting is a minority practice in the US, but the last cutters are hanging on for dear life, even stooping to the cleanliness myth – which is obvious nonsense when you consider women create/retain more smegma than men (therefore all advocacy for male genital cutting is also advocacy for female genital cutting – way to go girls).
Washing with soap and water is good hygiene. Cutting off pieces of your body is not. Washing your child, then teaching him to wash himself, is good parenting. Slicing off bits of his private parts as if you own them… shameful.
