Russell Crowe: 'Circumcision is Barbaric and Stupid'

Russell Crowe has spoken out about circumcision on his Twitter account.

“Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature? Is it real that GOD requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect,” the 47-year-old actor wrote on Twitter on Thursday (June 9).

“I will always stand for the perfection of babies, i will always believe in God, not man’s interpretation of what God requires,” Russell continued.

“Last of it, if [you] feel it is [your] right 2 cut things off [your] babies please unfollow and f— off,I’ll take attentive parenting over barbarism,” he concluded.

WHAT DO YOU THINK of Russell Crowe’s argument against circumcision?

    @Jasmine:

    Any solid proof there is a god? No. Then STFU.

  • Miapocca

    he is entitled to his opinion as long as its restricted to his himself and his kids

    Those who practice circumcision limit it to family…havent heard of strangers running around with scapels in mall of america asking for a foresking donation….

    Till that happens just remember that Circumcision is

    1- a religious act
    2-cultural and traditional in some part of Africa and middle east
    3-removal of the foreskin in a protection against HIV

    However I also believe in a PERSONS right to choose. Well babies cant choose and parents serve as guardians so I cant even jump into this argument

    Male circumcision does not cause as much issues as female circumsion which is designed purposely to control the female and with medical problems down the line…so a little bit of male foreskin doesnt hurt much 30 years after the fact.

  • Thai

    Interesting how a god, a moronic god, needs newborns’ foreskin, our money, our virginity and what not. Use ur brain, sheeple!

    @J:

    Who are u to tell other ppl/women what to do? Most religious morons do that, so STFU again and get back on ur knees to do what u do best. Natural and normal things – like abortion – have been demonized by religion in order to take a better control of the people.

    Well i believe everyone is entitled to their opinion i dont agree or diagree with what he say’s however i believe that some religions and cultures do this therefore he shoulld respect that but not everyone will agree with his opinion on the matter but its freedom of speech. I believe if its in your religion or culture then thats your decision to make and people should respect that.

  • AK

    If circumcision was part and parcel of Islam the Libs would tell us we need to be tolerant of their religion. But since their Jews its okay to insult their religion and run them out of town. Anybody for this law should also except they are racist against jews

  • okay

    @AK: actually circumcisim is a part of islam as well and sometimes it has nothing to do with religion a friend of mine got her son cirumcised and she doesnt follow any religion she said she did it for health reason so people cirumcise and sometimes it has nothing to do with religion

  • Ruth

    I see that the anti-circumcision lunatics have hit this board and all moderate comments have been hidden by them.

    It would have been better if Crowe had spoken out against female circumcision which is barbaric. His comments about circumcision of Jewish baby boys is bordering on antisemiticism and are at best tasteless. He obviously forgets that the United Nations has undertaken mass circumcisions of men and boys in Africa to combat AIDS and millions of non-Jewish children have been circumcised for many different medical reasons. Many American children are circumcised at birth and the parents can opt out if they wish to do so. There are states where the rate reaches 60% and these children are NOT JEWS. The medical profession in the USA, the most advanced in the world, obviously believes that the procedure helps to combat many diseases and for that reason supports the wide-spread circumcision of boys.

    As a Jew I believe that those parents wishing to circumcise their week old baby sons have the right to do so. My two beautiful grandsons were operated on by a top surgeon who undertook the procedure which took about two minutes. No pain, no suffering, no after effects – nothing.

    He should really stick to acting and watch his mouth.

    @Camden: @Jamie Poston-Benford:

    TOTALLLLLY AGREE WITH YOU!!! You couldn’t have said it any better!!

  • Rocky

    @Jasmine:

    You have some major points there.

  • Fred

    This is why we abandoned it in Europe decades ago.

  • Rocky

    @Ruth:

    He has every right to voice his opinion. You just did. If we went back to worshipping the Greek, Roman and Egyptian gods, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in right now with this religion saying they’re better than the other. Religion has been the number one cause of wars and hatred since time began. My friends who are Jewish are not considered Jews by the Hasidic Jewish community. Now tell me what’s up with that? Russell has major points in his statement and I applaud him for expressing his opinons. Some people may not like it, but it’s his right.

  • SW

    @Ruth – Russell voices his opinion and gets a lot of support, you don’t like that and immediately play the antisemitic card. How pathetic. Only makes you sound defensive.

  • Rocky

    @Thai:

    Let’s see……….Crusades? Yeah, like they were really following the will of God? Man has used religion for wars, greed, and sheer hate for others. Someone once said, “If you want to make millions, start a religion”.

  • Rocky

    @anon:

    Russell didn’t say anything about Jews or Muslims. Give me a break!!

  • Tazlena

    It is a horrible practice. Totally barbaric, just a religious practice that should be banned everywhere. Since when is it acceptable to mutilate helpless babies who don’t have a voice of their own as to whether they want this done to them or not. They can decide at 18 if they want this done.

  • guli

    Well, let me tell you bỉtches that I’ve sucked many miles of ċock, and cut is the only way to go.

    In fact, circumcision should be compulsory, not optional.

  • Ella

    I used to be a fan but this is really quite ignorant and sad. Most people don’t get their babies circumsized for religious reasons – it’s for 1) good hygiene and 2) prevention of diseases – HIV, certain cancers including penile. Russ, please do your research next time.

  • http://waltdisneyanimation.wordpress.com mulan

    i AGREE WITH RUSSELL

  • swadde

    he criticizes the jewish not the muslim people, because muslims dont do the circumicision to their babies, they wait until they get older.. and they dont do it as a “donation”

  • From Paris with Love

    This is almost only a debate in the US. In Europe, nobody except for Jews and Muslims is circumsized. I mean more than 95% of men are not circumsized, it’s not even something that crosses the population’s mind. So does that mean that in Europe the rates of infections and diseases are through the roof or higher than in the US? I doubt it haha. That is all religious and cultural BS.
    .
    As for the hygienic reason I think THAT is the grossest reason ever. So just because some men are lazy and incapable of cleaning themselves properly everyday they should just cut a piece of skin off?! Well let’s all cut off our labia and ears and belly rolls and under breasts and armpits because you know… any body part that has some kind of crease, fold, line, crack or cavity will stink if you don’t clean it DUH ! And let’s all shave our hair because you know if you don’t wash it it’s gross LOL
    The lack of hygiene is the most stupid reason ever.

  • Rocky

    @swadde:

    Where in his statement did he say “JEW”? READ WHAT HE SAID IDIOT!!!

  • SJC

    I agree with him. I would never do that to my baby. The only time I did it is when he is older and it becomes uncomfortable for him. Why cause your baby unnecessary pain?

  • Matthew

    @Kate: Ridiculous ideas deserve ridicule. No one is insulting you personally. It’s just that you’re caught up in bronze-age dogma that should have died out millenia ago.

    And for the record, that’s a different Matthew who commented about abortion… And the unstable comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek. Grow a sense of humor, people.

  • Piper

    i see an apology message in 1, 2, 3,…

    by his standards, you should not wear bifocal glasses or get hearing aids. afterall, it’s just mother nature’s way of saying you’re old and you shouldn’t correct in anyway.

  • Matthew

    @Piper: A foreskin isn’t a condition to be corrected.

  • AJoanna

    So we’re going to make a big deal about circumsision ad say nothing about abortion? I think most little baby boys would rather miss a small part of themselves than be cold bloodily MURDERED by parents who just didn’t want them. Talk about destroying a perfect body? That is. Just shut up about circumcision Russell.

  • dholmas

    I agree with Russell. I would never circumcise a baby. If they really want it done when they are older then that is their decission. Their is nothing gross about an intact penis. Jamie Poston-Benford has said it best. It is protection for the glans. Not hard to keep clean either. It does fold back for washing. No big deal.

  • Jane

    Ella @ 06/10/2011 at 9:25 am -4

    Circumcision is not a a big practice or not a practice at all in most Asia countries. Tell me what is the cancer rate in those countries? Japan for instance, what is the % of men who has not been circumsized has HIV or diseases and/or cancer?

  • Wikkie

    Go Russel! Not the best way to say it but I agree with the man.

  • simplesong4u

    Because I am a christian and I also fear God. I will follow what God has asked me to do. He will have to give account to God for disobeying God law. Plus it looks really nasty. As a female I would not want to be with anyone who is not circumcised.

  • Garrett Wolfe

    Excellent. Basic common sense. Medically unnecessary amputations create unnecessary risk, and on an infant, remove flesh AND the right of personal choice. Well done, Mr. Crowe!

  • ok

    I love how its completely barbaric to cut the foreskin off of the penis of a boy who probably WONT keep it clean (what teenage boy do you know that is clean at ALL?), yet our society is totally ok with full term abortions? Or any kind of abortion for that matter. They certainly don’t mind if parents decide that. Since when do they care about babies? or unborn babies? This whole thing is hypocrisy, and I refuse to take anything these “celebrities” say and actually listen. I’m sorry, but this is ridiculous.

  • Lynn

    BARBARIC!!! What you don’t see in the hospital: it looks like a cutting board shaped like a gingerbread man. It has little straps at the wrists and ankles. Your precious little baby boy is laid on this gingerbread man contraption and and his little wrists are cinched my the wrist straps. The same is done with their little ankles. They cry because they are naked, cold, and uncomfortable. Then the real horror begins as the doctor begins to cut on your baby. The cry turns into a scream and their lips tremble uncontrollably. The “procedure” lasts a few minutes, but those minutes are nothing short of pure, unadulterated torture.

    All parents that contemplate this ELECTIVE procedure should be REQUIRED to sit and watch a video of what circumcision entails.

  • http://Twitter El127

    Soft penises are not supposed to look aroused.

  • Sophie

    I absolutely agree with Russell. Circumcision is a violation of the babies rights hiding behing religions.

  • Brian

    Well said! Thank you for being a voice of reason. Now get ready to be lumped together with Mel Gibson as an anti-Semite. Good luck- you’re goin to need it.

    YOU GO RUSSELT CROW. YOU ARE ABSOLUTLEY CORRECT. NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO ALTER GOD’S WORK. GOD MADE BABY BOYS WITH UNCERCUMCISED PENIES. —- END OF STROY. — PROBABLY, SOME OF THE ANTI RUSSEL COMMENTS ARE COMING FROM PEOPLE THAT CIRCUMCISED THEIR BABY BOYS AND NOW THEY FEEL BAD, BECAUSE THRE’S NOTHING THEY CAN SO ABOUT IT. WE HAVE A SON, AND WHEN HE WAS BORN, THE DOCTTOR ASKED US IF WE WANTED OUR PRECIUOS LITTLE DEFENSELESS BOY CERCUMCISED—WE SAID NO WAY.. WE ASKED THE DOCTOR IF HE WAS CRICUMCISED . HA FLATLY SAID, NO. NO.

  • http://www.intactamerica.org Chad R

    I totally agree with Russell Crowe. As a victim of genital mutilation, I don’t want anyone else to suffer as I have. We need a worldwide end to genital mutilation of children.

  • 11Bravo1P

    @CJLOVE23:

    “run and hide like a turtle when they’re soft” — Have you ever considered that if they’re soft around you, then the guy isn’t the problem??

    I’m a former Army Airborne Infantryman. I’ve spent up to about 60 days in the field without a shower and NEVER had a problem with my uncut penis. This was all while protecting your rights as a lazy American. You’re welcome.

  • Different-Time-Zone

    Happy to know that Russell belongs to the uncut ones. He is right: did God make a mistake? Why would a religious person want to “correct” a body?

    People believing that a cut man looks nicer should think about the century old Chinese practice of foot binding, done because small feet were considered cuter. This practice was outlawed in 1949.

    Cut is not cute!

    A growing fraction of North Americans think more or less as Crowe does. The circ rate is down to 20-30% in Canada (zero in some provinces) and about 50% in the USA (25% in California). There are parents of Jewish ancestry who no longer circumcise, and there are Jews who are eloquent critics of circ.

    Last century, millions of baby boys were done without anesthesia — utterly barbaric. Not injecting lidocaine remains a common practice. Europe, Japan, and New Zealand do not circumcise routinely. In Australia and Canada, it’s a minority thing. To think that hundreds of millions of parents in these nations are all clueless about hygiene, and sexual health and propriety, strikes me as rather arrogant. American routine circumcision now looks suspiciously provincial.

    I have major difficulties with the fact that the consequences of infant circ for adult sexuality, including PE, ED, damaged erections, and propensity to use condoms, have not been researched. There is a lot of evidence, mostly anecdotal but some clinical, that women who have experienced both kinds of men prefer those with all the factory installed moving parts, thank you. It is not hard to discover what I write here during the course of a day or two of web browsing.

    Many people in Tinseltown privately agree with Crowe, simply because Tinseltown is in California where the overall circ rate is way down, intactivism appeals to idealists, celebrities tend to be idealists. Opposing circumcision may brass off some Jewish movers and shakers in Hollywood, but gets you friends in another respected part of the showbiz set: gay men. The large gay communities in coastal USA are quite foreskin friendly.

    The spearhead of intactivism is concerned mothers, especially the crunchies. And I would not be surprised if Mrs Crowe has bought into the intactivist argument, and shared her thoughts with Russell. It is an amazing fact that most of what I have read on the net pro and con foreskin has been written by women of childbearing age. Cutting off part of the genitalia of a newborn boy strikes more and more American women as cruel and sexually bizarre. Crowe’s impolitic remarks may brass off some Jews and Moslems, but will be roundly applauded by many young women around the English speaking world.

    If Crowe said that he approves of abortion on demand while also detesting circumcision on demand, I agree that that stance challenges common sense (like quite a few intactivists, I deplore abortion as well), but I also predict that millions of Americans and Canadians on the left think in precisely that fashion, as has a growing fraction of the American progressive chattering class.
