Russell Crowe: 'Circumcision is Barbaric and Stupid'

Russell Crowe has spoken out about circumcision on his Twitter account.

“Circumcision is barbaric and stupid. Who are you to correct nature? Is it real that GOD requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect,” the 47-year-old actor wrote on Twitter on Thursday (June 9).

“I will always stand for the perfection of babies, i will always believe in God, not man’s interpretation of what God requires,” Russell continued.

“Last of it, if [you] feel it is [your] right 2 cut things off [your] babies please unfollow and f— off,I’ll take attentive parenting over barbarism,” he concluded.

WHAT DO YOU THINK of Russell Crowe’s argument against circumcision?

    @Matthew: Beg your pardon, but there is belief that cancer is prvented in the penis when some are circumcised.

  • Racy

    Is there ANYBODY in the world (except Russel Crowe) who CARES what Russel Crowe thinks?

  • Morgan

    It puzzles me when he states ” i will always believe in GOD, not man’s interpretation of what God requires” and yet he completely contradicts himself by saying “Circumcision is barbaric and stupid”. Whether Crowe has read the Holy Bible I do not know. But it states clearly enough for anyone who is a follower of the one true GOD in Genesis 17 why and how christians and Jews have an everlasting covenant with God. God is never changing and HE is the same during Abrams time as HE is now in our lives. It was God himself who appeared before Abram (before he was named Abraham) and spoke of circumcision. Crowe may think he is defending what ever religion and God he speaks of, I am assuming Christianity, but he is actually doing exactly the opposite. It was not man who required circumcision but GOD and by worshiping and obeying him HE blessed us with nations and said HE will be our GOD. I could probably argue all day long about this and others things man (including myself) are so blind to see. But God is never wrong for He is perfect. “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

    There used to be a long list of Hollywood endowments and circumcision status.

    Does anyone have a recent version?

  • Riri

    It is actually healthier and people do it for sanitary reasons- not just religious. It was also found to reduce the chance of catching an infected disease.
    .
    Babies who are tongue-tie get a part of their skin cut.
    We cut a part of the skin that is attached to the umbilical cord.
    .
    We cause babies pain when we give them shots/ immunization.
    .
    Where they born “perfect”? yes, but medical and sanitary reasons always had us do some medical things to babies.

    @Jenna:

    Jenna, how could you possibly know that? And how do circumcised Jews look different from their gentile American and Canadian counterparts? And it could be that Jewish men compensate for the fact of circumcision by greater skill with their mouths and/or hands. at any rate, the penis is not designed to appeal to your eyes or mine. It is designed to make its owner, and his chosen lady, FEEL good. That the intact penis does rather well. How dysfunctional the circumcised penis is, we don’t really know yet. It is very likely that circ damage varies widely across individuals, with only a minority being seriously impaired. But that minority is ample reason to abandon the practice.

  • myrick

    @Ruth:

    Female circ is illegal in the west, hence no reason to linger over it.

    His comments about circumcision of Jewish baby boys is bordering on antisemiticism and are at best tasteless.
    ME. He should have focused on the routine circumcision of American gentiles, the vast majority of circumcision performed in the USA.

    He obviously forgets that the United Nations has undertaken mass circumcisions of men and boys in Africa to combat AIDS…
    ME. Those campaigns are misguided and will backfire. They are based on clinical trials carried out in ways that make them a scientific scandal.

    Many American children are circumcised at birth…
    ME. Very very few parents have the urological or sexual sophistication required to make an informed choice here.

    and the parents can opt out if they wish to do so.
    ME. That was not true for much of the last century. Many boys, including my younger brother, were cut without their mother’s consent.

    There are states where the rate reaches 60% and these children are NOT JEWS.
    ME. The rate in some states has been over 85%. It is true that the vast majority of circs in the USA are not brises.

    The medical profession in the USA, the most advanced in the world, obviously believes that the procedure helps to combat many diseases and for that reason supports the wide-spread circumcision of boys.
    ME. This sentence is flat out wrong. The AMA and American Academy of Pediatrics does not endorse” circumcision. Rather, American medicine has declared the tender moving bits on the tip of the penis to be optional, in that parents can elect to have those bits removed without giving a reason. The foreskin is the only part of the human body treated in this fashion.

    As a Jew I believe that those parents wishing to circumcise their week old baby sons have the right to do so. My two beautiful grandsons were operated on by a top surgeon who undertook the procedure which took about two minutes. No pain, no suffering, no after effects – nothing.
    ME. If lidocaine was not injected, they felt pain. Lidocaine is still not a common part of bris. The after effects we intactivists worry most about often do not manifest themselves until adult life or even middle age.

  • Who is he again?

    Obviously, westerners will oppose this. It’s not always about science, it has to with faith. and yes! Muslims, Christians (true Christians that is, sadly a few are left of it) and Jews, may never get along, but NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO QUESTION OUR FAITH. Is Russel even a christian? You just can’t just say, “OK! i believe in God, while the rest is my FREE CHOICE”….. doesn’t work that way. What is it like SCIENTOLOGY the new religion for these schmucks? LOSERS!!… any how something you won’t find the non-believers believeing…….

  • Matthew

    I agree with him to a degree… I am “pro choice” on this issue. Why not let your child decide when they are an adult if they want this kind of surgery? I have my foreskin, and was educated by my parents how to clean and take care of it in the bath tub as a young boy.

    I have many friends who don’t have a foreskin and wish that they did – god made man with a foreskin for a reason, the same with tonsils and gaul bladders. I can see that you can live with out these 3 things, but why unnecessarily remove any of them, especially without connect?

  • Josh

    I absolutely agree. If a boy wants to be circumsized, it should be his decision. There’s no reason for mutilating a baby’s genitals.

  • Tora

    Thank you, Russel Crowe! You are right, nature/God does not make mistakes and we don’t have the right to amputate healthy functioning tissue from non-consenting children. As an RN, I have seen circumcisions done and it is a barbaric practice. 80% of the world’s men have their foreskins, lucky for them and their partners. His body, his choice!

  • Hotel del Coronado

    I agree with him . Removing a healthy tissue from a baby should be totally discouraged and parents should educate themselves better . Besides cleaning is so simple that it is laughable some people even question that . I see religion is yet again involved * roll eyes * in creating conflicts instead the opposite .

  • DW

    @Klime:
    Wrong Wrong Wrong. Masturbation had nothing to do with circumcision. It was done for cleanliness. GOD is the one who instituted it on the 8th day after birth so if you think its stupid then tell Him his laws, commandmenets etc are stupid. Maybe He will just slap the tar out of you instead of killing you. Numbskull!

  • Cinnamon

    I see nothing controversial about Russell Crowe sharing his opinion! Nonetheless, telling us to f**k off if we didn’t agree was puerile. My kid brother had it done when he was about three, and there was a lot of pain and trauma. One of the best kept secrets here is that doctors sometimes “slip up” and the boy has to be raised as a girl. I decided that since I have no religious obligations, I wasn’t going to do this to my son.

  • Samantha

    @J:

    So you think a woman who is raped and then gets pregnant should have to have that baby? So you would force her to have a baby even though she was not a willing participant in the sex act? Really?

    When a guy has an erect pen!s it doesn’t look that much different. Get over it!

  • fred

    Actually, the circumcision covenant was between the Jews and God as a covenantal sign of their relationship.

    Circumcision is NOT destructive. I can’t believe people get so worked up over it. Morons in San Francisco have nothing better to do than to try to get it outlawed.

    Of course, they do nothing to try to eliminate “Up Your Alley” and other events too base to discuss here. Right, but circumcision is the enemy.

    While we’re at it, I don’t recall ONE unborn baby EVER giving permission to the other to kill it…

    RUSSELL IS ABSOLUTLY RIGHT! IN THIS DAY AND AGE IS A TERRIBLE THING TO DO TO OUR BABIES. MY SONS ARE INTACT AND GRATEFUL THEY ARE!

  • AJK

    Good fo him. Anyone and EVERYONE is allowed to have an opinion. He can think whatever he wants and he’s allowed to use his constitutionally guaranteed rights of free speech. If you don’t likehis opinion then take his advice and don’t follow him anymore. Gee, that was a hard to figure out.

  • blondeness032

    I think EVERY parent should research this subject and then make their own decision. Just because someone made some movies does NOT make them an expert.

  • John G.

    I also agree with Russel. I am happy to say I’m not circumcised, and am so glad that my mother made that decision. I would never allow this to happen to my child. My mother has told me that people she knows have decided against the procedure for their children, and without their consent, the doctor performed this anyway. I can safely say that if my doctor were to do that, his first concern would be me breaking his face, to see how he enjoyed his unnecessary surgery. And let me be clear, I don’t care what a single females opinion is on the subject, because I support a woman’s choice to have an abortion, so if a woman wants to oppose my feelings on my male genitalia, then shame on her. Would you support the African cultural practice of removal of the labia on female children? I doubt it.

  • maliciousboy

    Totally agree with Crowe. He shouldn’t apologize at all.

    Saw a video of a circumcision before my first son’s birth, NO WAY would I put a kid through that. It’s as stupid as female circumcision.

    People will get bent out of shape if you clip a dog’s tail or ears, but they want to chop up newborns.

    If your religion tells you to — go for it I guess. I don’t believe in that hogwash.

    If you’re doing it for hygiene, just teach you kid about soap and water and they’ll have no problems.

    To those who say it looks weird, no — it looks natural. Get used to reality.

    @Nathan:

    Hey Nathan (#176): I watched the 10-minute movie you and your brother made. It’s fantastic! Thank you for sharing, and I definitely encourage everyone else to check this out. It’s funny as hell, but certainly not out of the realm of possibilities. One of the things I get out of this is that we really do need to THINK more and talk more about this topic. Again, Nathan put link on message #176. Thanks, guys.

  • Herb Ernst

    I think that what really bothers me is that this practice is performed on the most innocent and most helpless of all human beings — infant children.

    If someone wants to mutilate their genitals, let them make the conscious CHOICE for themselves; don’t superimpose your choice on someone who never mutilated your genitals.

  • Ozymandias

    I agree with Russell Crowe, that circumcision is, for the majority of male babies, unnecessary and barbaric. This procedure has long been controversial and frankly anyone assisting with a circumcision will realize at once that it is gravely traumatic for the baby. The times when circumcision might be necessary will be exceedingly rare and can be almost eliminated by parents teaching their boys good hygiene practices. Some horrendous complications have left children in a limbo between genders…that is simply not an acceptable outcome. Some Rabbi’s no longer circumcise but have instead developed a symbolic ritual to supplant the actual cutting of the foreskin. An intelllgent, well informed, and humane approach to an archaic practice that has no place in the world today.

  • G

    He is entitled to his opinion, people stop making a mountain out of a mole hill!

  • AK

    Here, here, Russel Crowe, personally I’m glad he expressed his opinion and I agree ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. Don’t appologize or backstep for something you believe in, especially when it comes to the welfare of a child. Man was made this way for a specific reason, it’s not like it’s an anomaly like an extra appendage or something that needs to be taken off . However, if parents choose circumcision for religious reasons, so be it, I’m fine with that, but I don’t personally think it’s necessary. And for those of you who think it’s nasty… when you actually take care of yourself it’s no different than a man who is circumcised. If from a young age you’re taught to pull back the skin regularly it basically stays back and looks much like a circumcised man, so I guess it’s just personal choice, well for the parents anyhow.

  • Ramon

    @Jasmine:

    What?
    That’s a strange assumption made from parents choosing not to circumcise their little boys.
    It doesn’t make parents lazy, and it doesn’t mean that they’re going to let their children do everything they want, for themselves.
    It means that they want their children to have their genital integrity.
    Well, general integrity.

    Don’t you think it’s lazy of parents to not want to teach their children general hygiene?

    Mother: “Make sure to clean behind your ears, your armpits, and your foreskin, or you’ll stink!”

    Son: “Moooomm!!”

    Mother: *phew* “That was unbearably hard. I should have just cut off a part of my son’s penis, so I wouldn’t deal with telling him that.”

    I think it’s silly, also, when people talk about the benefits from the lowered chance of getting an STD.
    I mean, aside from the fact that it’s a quack study, considering America has the highest rates of STDs…
    Umm…hello?
    Condoms?

    They should be wearing them anyway.

  • Imran Khan

    Hey Russell, why do you cut your nails and hair then!? If “Babies are perfect”, they you should stop cutting their nails and hair!

    p.s. It is NOT about “correcting nature”, but following the Command of the One who created nature in the first place, dimwit.

    Sorry, but surgically altering your baby’s genitals for life is revolting. Russel had it right.
    Now penile cutting is a minority practice in the US, but the last cutters are hanging on for dear life, even stooping to the cleanliness myth – which is obvious nonsense when you consider women create/retain more smegma than men (therefore all advocacy for male genital cutting is also advocacy for female genital cutting – way to go girls).
    Washing with soap and water is good hygiene. Cutting off pieces of your body is not. Washing your child, then teaching him to wash himself, is good parenting. Slicing off bits of his private parts as if you own them… shameful.
