Jonathan Rhys Meyers Hospitalized in London

Jonathan Rhys Meyers was hospitalized on Tuesday (June 28) in London, England.

The 33-year-old Irish actor, best known for his role on The Tudors, was taken to the hospital despite refusing treatment when paramedics answered an emergency call, the Sun reports. Jonathan was reportedly released from the hospital the following morning.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard told People, “We can confirm we were called by the London Ambulance Service to an address in NW8 to report to a man refusing treatment. Police attended, and the man was taken by ambulance to a central London hospital. That was the end of our involvement.”

Although initial reports claimed the incident was an apparent suicide attempt, a source told ET it was rather a relapse in his sobriety.

Jonathan has been in and out of rehab over the past few years as he fights alcohol addiction.

I’m a huge fan of this guy- not just his work, but him. As twisted, complicated and moody as he seems- there is something amazing there. There is a flip side to everything and let’s face it, we love him because he is exciting. It’s just sometimes he’s exciting like winning the lottery or a job promotion and other times he’s exciting like a car wreck or a tornado. It’s much easier being average- when you’re too beautiful, too smart, or too talented (or too ugly, stupid or talentless) life is hard. The characteristics that make him exceptional have the potential to make or break him- which is ultimately his choice. I hope he learns to rock who he is and love himself more instead of only when others are loving him- then again I think we’re all a little like that… it’s harder to love ourselves sometimes because we *know* ourselves and we think “God if they only knew…” lol. I wish him the best. As far as everyone saying he needs “professional help” that’s fine but it seems he’s tried that with drinking how many times? He’s goes to rehab and relapses, goes to rehab and relapses, goes to rehab and relapses. I’m not a math genius but I don’t need a calculator to figure out how that would go again. I’m not saying there is not a solution to the problem I’m just saying that doesn’t seem to be it- and sometimes being told over and over you have a “disease” and are “out of control” can do more harm than good. Just because rehabilitation centers are part of a billion dollar industry and most follow the Minnesota Model doesn’t mean that is the most effective method of treatment. It’s not a one-size-fits-all, I think his solution is outside of the box- kinda like him.

I think he’s ill because he misses his mom and he can’t find anybody who loves him for who he is himself.

  • viper

I can pinpoint the day he started slipping; he was never the same after his mother died. I think it affected him so much so and should have gotten help then but he was too far into his pain to recognize that.

  • lily

Yeah…I can’t forget about reports of him calling people the N-word.

  • @viper

Be well JRM. You are loved and I hope you know that. *hughughughughughughughughughughughughughughughughughughughug*

  • Zoe

@Missouri Girl, perhaps he can try Brainstate? It is out of the box but can be quite helpful to the addictive person along with therapy or AA. You are correct that sometimes treatment is not a one size fits all. I have a soft spot for Jonathan and I do hope he gets better.

  • lafamepoma

Oh Jonathan I really hope you get very wel, you’re such a wonderful actor, and so gorgeous he only needs roles and estability.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/summernd missourigirl

@Zoe: I have never heard of it, sounds interesting. I actually did MM and found it very helpful. I was called an alcoholic for about 8 years (since I binge drank daily) but after awhile I accepted that I simply just didn’t want to be ‘sober’. I wanted to be able to go to a bbq with my friends and have a few beers, or a few glasses of wine with dinner, or margaritas with my girls- I just didn’t want it to cause so many problems in my life and I wanted to be in control of it. It’s not easy but I had to completely change my relationship with alcohol- like someone who binge and compulsively overeats has to with food. I am happy now and have managed to allow alcohol be a small but enjoyable part of my life instead of my whole life- but in order to do that I had to pretty much erase everything I had heard from rehab centers and AA (ie the ‘disease model’) because ‘for me’ that mentality had done more harm than good. There are quite a few options out there and everyone has to find something that works for them ya know. It’s just so mainstream the other way- but I think it’s the best way for them to make money. The 12 steps kind of have brainwashy cult-like vibe IMO. Anyway I hope he is able to find something that works for him so he can find happiness- as well as anyone else dealing with a similar situation.

Missourigirl i am really interested in your response. Maybe you never had a problem with alcohol…..you just had problems and were self medicating with alcohol…. there is a difference. That could be the same thing with this actor Meyers. He might have problems I think some of the issues mentioned here are being abandoned by his Father, the death of his mother are only two that we know about. This would/could cause a person to self medicate just to shut down the emotions. It might look like alcoholism but it might not be. Interesting response and the relating it with overeating was also insightful. Overeaters can’t stop eating completely but to your point they have to change their relationship with food and deal with the issues that caused them to medicate with food. Really interesting post!
