Ryan Murphy Reveals Would-Be 'Glee' Spinoff Plans

Ryan Murphy has opened up to Deadline about discarded spinoff plans for Glee and explained why he said Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith were leaving the show for good after the show’s third season.

“I said, yes, they are graduating and they will not be back on the show for Season Four. And when I did that interview, what was happening was we were asked to investigate doing a spin-off and it was a spin-off specifically for three of them, Chris, Cory and Lea. In March, Brad Falchuk and I started talking to all three of those actors about it because you can’t make people do spin-offs,” Ryan said.

“Maybe we’ll talk about it in April or May, but for now let’s just concentrate on making Season 3 the best that we can do. When I say they’re seniors and they’re not coming back to the show, what I did not say is they’re not coming back to the show because there will be another show,” Ryan said.

Ryan also shared that the original plan was to send cast members to Juilliard in New York City for the spinoff.

Like we can believe anything this idiot says. If he gets rid of his main characters his show is doomed. Spinoff be damned!

everything this guy says sounds so shady.
if he wasnt sure about show plans then he shouldve kept his mouth shut or just said stuff was still in the works.

    Jennifer Says:

I think he over estimates the staying power of The Glee franchise. How many regionals and Kurt pouts can we stand? It’s already showing wear.

K so we wont be listening to Ryan Murphy anymore.

he fires people, unfires people, says he never really fired people, telling people to ‘go with god’. he’s so full of sh*t.

I’m certainly glad that idea was scrapped!

u know what it seems like is that he got too full of himself with the success of the show and he is overestimating or abusing his ‘power’. u cant be like that. itll come back to bite u eventually.

i know if i was artie, i’d want off the show. i would hate to be in a wheelchair. plus he makes him stay in the wheelchair on the concerts, i find that so stupid

these poor kids are worked like slaves with 16 hour days/7 days a week, and then have to deal with this guy. i hope the show is cancelled for their sake.

How many times does he need to change the story?!

You do know that the character of Artie isnt real? He’s an actor who portrays a wheelchair bound person and with that comes a responsibility to honour the rights and feelings of a disabled viewer.

Meaning that when they do concerts, it’s themed and they are portraying their characters not themselves which means it’s only right that he stays in the wheelchair.

One of the main reasons to have a disabled person on screen is to hopefully create less ignorance but it obviously hasnt caught on yet with some people.

You would hate to be in a wheelchair, I think everyone would agree with that but thousands of people are disabled and artie represents a stereotype and hopefully people will learn from him.

befre my mom died, she was wheelchair bound, so yeah, i know it sucks.. and i don’t need some dumb ass such as yourself to enlighten me. so grow up

    jacqueline Says:

Finn going to Juilliard, seriously? The dumbest character on the show. But then, with Glee everything’s possible. And I’d hate a spinoff with FINN! Kurt, Rachel, maybe Jesse, Quinn… Finn is not good enough.
I’m starting to hate Ryan Murphy, he’s just rude and disrespectful with the actors and he apparentely thinks we watch the show because he’s a fricking genius and we’ll still watch it after the main cast graduates.

    jonesy Says:

So can someone please enlighten me because after reading this I’m even more confused then I was before. If Glee gets a forth season are Lea, Cory & Chris staying? I don’t get it. I mean, I totally understand the fact that they want them to graduate and that’s cool I think they should, but that doesn’t mean that they should leave the show or do a spin-off. Why don’t they just continue doing a storyline for them after leaving high school with all the remaining cast and maybe for Matthew include a new Glee club in which the original Glee cast helps him?! This is just my opinion but to me and a lot of people who watch the show sounds more logical than removing them from the show or doing a spin-off.

  16. 16
    bona Says:

they can make more money leaving the show completely

FAIL never watching! Can’t stand the voices of these three!

    di Says:

Ryan Murphy is saying CORY is definitely part of the spin-off. Whatever feelings you might have as Finn as a character, Cory is one of their most popular actors with a large fanbase and Fox is not going to want to lose that.

    Courtney Says:

    This guy is an idiot.

nooooooooooooooooo.lets hope this show eill end soon

    Phil Says:

I wish Ryan would just go away already. Glee is so poorly written now I no longer look forward to it. What more will this man bring to the table for entertainment? I mean Eat, Love, Pray was a total flop (even with the wonderful Julia Roberts) and the dialogue for Glee is all about titillating his audience (or having more compassion for people of alternative lifestyles).

    Mtkolvia Says:

Ryan and Brad both need to shape up and start acting like professionals. First Brad calls a journalist from The Hollywood Reporter a liar and insinuates Chord Overstreet is a diva because he wouldn’t work for $10,000/episode less than his costars… now Ryan throws Chris Colfer under the bus after HE makes an incredibly public blunder, and cancels the spin-off to punish the actors for talking to the press?

I didn’t think anything could be worse than exploiting the suicides of bullied teenagers for media buzz and then suggesting bullies are the ones who need sympathy. Guess I was wrong. Get this show off the air before Ryan Murphy does any more damage to careers or teenagers’ self-esteem.

I agree with the entire first paragraph of your comment, but I must beg to differ with the second. Showing that SOME bullies are aggressive because of THEIR OWN insecurities is actually quite helpful to teens. I work with children in an urban environment where we see a lot of bullying beahvior, and I have to tell you that I wish I could get my kids to understand this.

The show has NEVER acted as if Kurt wasn’t the victim…but it went even further by showing that his bully was damaged as well. THAT’S reality, my friend. Many bullies are not just bad seeds, they’re kids who are hurting.

Omg!!! I would soo be up to audition for the new glee spin off or anything glee. Unfortunately I was too young to audition when I first heard of the show but am soon going to be 16 I know it’s 18 and would kill for updates on auditioning and any news on the new show! Go team glee!

    testingtonho Says:

I like the show, but it is completely unrealistic to base a show around Finn at Julliard. He doesn’t have the talent or grades necessary to get in there.

If they did a spin-off it would be best to just have it be about Rachel and/or Curt trying to make it in New York
