The Smurfs 3-D and Cowboys & Aliens topped this weekend’s box office – and the numbers are too close to call a winner at this point!

Third place went to Chris EvansCaptain America: The First Avenger, followed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.

    i have to ask. what’s so great about these smurf”s? in any case, i don’t care what the critics think; i liked C&A. it was a good time. and let’s be honest, seeing Daniel without his shirt on is worth the price of admission.

    I just don’t understand Hollywood… u have a guy who has been in nothing but MAJOR flops (Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Gosling, James Franco…) and still they push them as leads in more and more movies… on the other hand you have many young and great actress with one or two flops (Jennifer Aniston, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Roberts,…) and producers just starts ignoring them… THAT SUCKS HOLLYWOOD! This is proof that Hollywood is GAYLIWOOD in fact!

    I saw Cowboys & Aliens yesterday and I loved it! I hate reading what critics think. Movies they like people hate it, and they movies they hate people love them. I don’t waste my time on them. The Smurfs looked ridiculous and I’m definitely not watching it.

    Hope Cowboys & Aliens make #1 at the Box Office!!

    Cowboys and Aliens sucked balls. Huge disappointment. Craig didn’t help, either, he’s pinch-faced bore.

    Cheery Says:

    Wow, Cowboys & Aliens couldn’t even beat Smurfs outright. Bad sign. and the movie cost over 150 mil to make!

    @blah:

    Am I hearing this right?? Ryan Gosling has been in major flops!? Were you hiding under a rock or something? Ryan Gosling has not done any studio film until now (not counting Fracture), and it got great reviews. Ryan has mostly done independent films and, guess what, they were incredible. And for independent films, Ryan brought a lot of money to them. I agree with you that Ashton Kutcher (obviously) has been in major flops, and James Franco seems to be heading that way (still a better actor then Kutcher though), but Ryan is no where near a flop.

    And I disagree with you about Jennifer Aniston. Although she seems nice and has done a few good movies (i.e. The Good Girl), most of her studio films are flops. I think Julia Roberts also has done some flops. I think Hollywood definitely has been pushing both Roberts and Aniston. I do agree with you that Kirsten Dunst is a very underrated actress and she is being ignored. She has been doing some great movies in the last couple of years (can’t wait for Melancholia!).

    But I can’t believe that you said that Ryan Gosling has been in major flops. You really need to check out his filmography again. And I think that Holly wood should definitely push Ryan Gosling. He’s a phenomenal actor and, in my opinion, the best actor of his generation.

    I saw Cowboys & Aliens. It wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be, but it wasn’t a bad way to spend a few hours. I just wish they’d camped it up a bit more. I mean, come on — Indiana Jones and James Bond fighting aliens?

    stabler Says:

    @lucy:
    Independent films have small budgets; most of his “independent films” haven’t even made budget. In fact, the average draw on Ryan’s films is 16 million, even with The Notebook earning just over 100 million. Studio film flops just mean there was a bigger budget and the film didn’t earn back a bigger sum. So it’s not a big plus to say, yeah, his films were flops, but they weren’t studio flops…..there’s no difference. In contrast, Rachel’s total films have earned more than five times what Ryan’s have, with an average of 70 million per film.
    And seriously, let me point something out to you…”the best actor of his generation” is the most overused phrase that’s gag-inducing. Every stan spouts the same claim for their favorite actor/actress. It’s not exactly profound or solid proof of anything.

    Priscilla Says:

    Very disappointing for Crazy, Stupid Love. It was a refreshing change to all these action movies. I was also hoping Ryan Gosling would get a mainstream box office hit. Although, I disagree that he is a box office bomb. He rarely does commercial films, so the point is moot.

    Anna Says:

    Crazy Stupid Love budget: $45M Opening Weekend: $19.3M

    It’s certainly not a flop!

  21. 21
    bree Says:

    There was no way Crazy, Stupid, Love would even be expected to beat those big-budget action movies. Just because it didn’t make as much as Harry Potter or Captain America doesn’t mean it did badly – it also cost a fraction of the money to make. I saw that and C&A and liked both.

  22. 22
    Lexi Says:

    @stabler:

    But Ryan really is the best actor of his generation. Disagree if you will, but I think so. And it’s not fair to compare Rachel and Ryan. Rachel has done more studio films then Ryan has. So one can’t really compare their film budgets.

  23. 23
    @stabler Says:

    Ryan is phenomenal! He is extremely talented.

  24. 24
    TBT Says:

    @stabler: GMAFB. RM has never carried a film that was a hit, indie or otherwise. She was a co-star in the Wedding Crashers, Sherlock Holmes, Mean Girls and The Notebook. All her other stuff were BOMBS. Ryan will have a longer lasting career than she will. You can take that to the bank.
