'Smurfs' & 'Cowboys & Aliens' Top Box Office

The Smurfs 3-D and Cowboys & Aliens topped this weekend’s box office – and the numbers are too close to call a winner at this point!

The Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays film and Harrison Ford/Daniel Craig‘s sci fi pic both earned an estimated $36.2 million over the weekend – we’ll find out final numbers on Monday.

Third place went to Chris EvansCaptain America: The First Avenger, followed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.

Rounding out the top five was the Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell film Crazy, Stupid, Love.

WHAT DID YOU SEE at the movies this weekend?

i have to ask. what’s so great about these smurf”s? in any case, i don’t care what the critics think; i liked C&A. it was a good time. and let’s be honest, seeing Daniel without his shirt on is worth the price of admission.

    Based on the media halo

  • dee

Saw Crazy Stupid Love. Loved it. Ryan Gosling can do no wrong…..Thought about seeing Cowboys and Aliens but I’m kind of burned out on action movies.. I’ll wait.

  • blah

I just don’t understand Hollywood… u have a guy who has been in nothing but MAJOR flops (Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Gosling, James Franco…) and still they push them as leads in more and more movies… on the other hand you have many young and great actress with one or two flops (Jennifer Aniston, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Roberts,…) and producers just starts ignoring them… THAT SUCKS HOLLYWOOD! This is proof that Hollywood is GAYLIWOOD in fact!

  • Cece

I saw Cowboys & Aliens yesterday and I loved it! I hate reading what critics think. Movies they like people hate it, and they movies they hate people love them. I don’t waste my time on them. The Smurfs looked ridiculous and I’m definitely not watching it.

Hope Cowboys & Aliens make #1 at the Box Office!!

  • Kat

    Smurfs sucked a$$
    worst movie ever

  • lulu

i saw the smurfs and i loved !!! nph team !!!! yeah !!

  • Hotlips

Cowboys and Aliens sucked balls. Huge disappointment. Craig didn’t help, either, he’s pinch-faced bore.

  • Cheery

Wow, Cowboys & Aliens couldn’t even beat Smurfs outright. Bad sign. and the movie cost over 150 mil to make!

  • lucy

Am I hearing this right?? Ryan Gosling has been in major flops!? Were you hiding under a rock or something? Ryan Gosling has not done any studio film until now (not counting Fracture), and it got great reviews. Ryan has mostly done independent films and, guess what, they were incredible. And for independent films, Ryan brought a lot of money to them. I agree with you that Ashton Kutcher (obviously) has been in major flops, and James Franco seems to be heading that way (still a better actor then Kutcher though), but Ryan is no where near a flop.

And I disagree with you about Jennifer Aniston. Although she seems nice and has done a few good movies (i.e. The Good Girl), most of her studio films are flops. I think Julia Roberts also has done some flops. I think Hollywood definitely has been pushing both Roberts and Aniston. I do agree with you that Kirsten Dunst is a very underrated actress and she is being ignored. She has been doing some great movies in the last couple of years (can’t wait for Melancholia!).

But I can’t believe that you said that Ryan Gosling has been in major flops. You really need to check out his filmography again. And I think that Holly wood should definitely push Ryan Gosling. He’s a phenomenal actor and, in my opinion, the best actor of his generation.

  • ladys

I saw Cowboys & Aliens. It wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be, but it wasn’t a bad way to spend a few hours. I just wish they’d camped it up a bit more. I mean, come on — Indiana Jones and James Bond fighting aliens?

  • stabler

Independent films have small budgets; most of his “independent films” haven’t even made budget. In fact, the average draw on Ryan’s films is 16 million, even with The Notebook earning just over 100 million. Studio film flops just mean there was a bigger budget and the film didn’t earn back a bigger sum. So it’s not a big plus to say, yeah, his films were flops, but they weren’t studio flops…..there’s no difference. In contrast, Rachel’s total films have earned more than five times what Ryan’s have, with an average of 70 million per film.
And seriously, let me point something out to you…”the best actor of his generation” is the most overused phrase that’s gag-inducing. Every stan spouts the same claim for their favorite actor/actress. It’s not exactly profound or solid proof of anything.

  • Priscilla

Very disappointing for Crazy, Stupid Love. It was a refreshing change to all these action movies. I was also hoping Ryan Gosling would get a mainstream box office hit. Although, I disagree that he is a box office bomb. He rarely does commercial films, so the point is moot.

  • Anna

Crazy Stupid Love budget: $45M Opening Weekend: $19.3M

    It’s certainly not a flop!

  • bree

There was no way Crazy, Stupid, Love would even be expected to beat those big-budget action movies. Just because it didn’t make as much as Harry Potter or Captain America doesn’t mean it did badly – it also cost a fraction of the money to make. I saw that and C&A and liked both.

  • Lexi

But Ryan really is the best actor of his generation. Disagree if you will, but I think so. And it’s not fair to compare Rachel and Ryan. Rachel has done more studio films then Ryan has. So one can’t really compare their film budgets.

  • @stabler

Ryan is phenomenal! He is extremely talented.

  • TBT

@stabler: GMAFB. RM has never carried a film that was a hit, indie or otherwise. She was a co-star in the Wedding Crashers, Sherlock Holmes, Mean Girls and The Notebook. All her other stuff were BOMBS. Ryan will have a longer lasting career than she will. You can take that to the bank.

Hey! is this where we should hang out? Smurfing Smurfs. I would love to smurf the smurf outa Dan! yee haw!! Dang smurking smurfs.
and thank you Fio…you keep me coming back for more smurfing Dan!!! and Mendel–I will track you down on the internet, so don’t think I dont smurfing appreciate you either. christ, its been more than a smurfing year since we have been talking about the hottest man–Dan. Smurfing crazy.

i caught a few vids last night here but couldn’t comment–no time. the interviews with Fav in a hotel? where they both wear black shirts…that was fun to watch. and I still havent found the pic you wanted me to caption Mendel…..have you watched C&A yet? is it over there yet? My dan still has his knee bandages on with some funky pantyhose and so he can’t sit for that long, I may have to go watch it by myself… oh darn. HA!

Dan on the east coast again? its gonna be hot this week, maybe he will be walkin around….is he gonna do a red carpet in the city???

  • So&So

Saw Crazy, Stupid Love and thought it was pretty good. It had more angst than I expected but that was a pleasant surprise. It was a little long winded though. Still a good movie regardless.

  • Mendel

Tough competition for Dan. Most smurfs are always shirtless and have big…hats!

    Hi Guinness,

“I would love to smurf the smurf outa Dan! yee haw!! Dang smurking smurfs.”

“Mendel–I will track you down on the internet, so don’t think I dont smurfing appreciate you either.”

Thanks! I smurfing appreciate you, too!!! *grin*

“I still havent found the pic you wanted me to caption Mendel….”

It was one of Fio’s smurftastic links – will look for it tomorrow!

“have you watched C&A yet? is it over there yet?”

I just asked you the same question over in the Dan and Rachel thread! No, it won’t be here until the 17 August (hrmph) – can’t wait!!!

  • cindy

How stupid that the smurfs and cowboy vs aliens were the top movies when both movies suck and weren’t even worth seeing. Wish Crazy Stupid Love was seen more it was a fun movie and better than the 2 topped this week. Goes to show you America’s aren’t that great with viewing there movies.

  • Brooks Argote

I think one of your advertisements caused my browser to resize, you may well want to put that on your blacklist.

  • Mendel

Oh so quiet tonight – Fio and Guinness, have you taken the Dan van without me??? Or are you watching C&A while I have to wait another 16 days???

    Dan on social networking:

“It’s like there’s a bunch of sociopaths out there who want to go out and rip you to pieces”

Or want to rip your clothes off *grin*

  • Guinness

    nope, just missed you!
no movies…I was picking up the bambinos this weekend at camp and then went to a county fair all day sunday and roasted! hot hot hot. Like dan.

Yeh, I wish the Dan van was up and running.*bigazz grin*
I think i know what pic you were thinking of and I know what caption quote I will use. It isn’t too strong, but Damn Dan is!!!

  • Guinness

I heard him or read that about the sociopath comment…where was that? hhmmm.
Is this the pic you were thinking of? Yes, it quite delightful…I think it can be used many ways….but here is some raw testosteronie wanting me!!!

  • Fio

Oops, why did JJ delete my comment? Oh, well… My PC has not revived yet!! So Rachel at San Diego. She talked about DH. IMO, she doesn’t seem to be dissatisfied with DH. Maybe Daniel, too?,0,4210523.story

Yay!!! Just pick me up at the front door :)

“Is this the pic you were thinking of?”

Yes, and I knew you’d do a great caption!!!

“Oops, why did JJ delete my comment? My PC has not revived yet!”

I think the site is funny – it sometimes takes me ages to load a page or even post a comment.

I like the interview with Rachel – she doesn’t pretent to be brave or wanting to be a great humanitarian – I think she’s very unpretentious.

    “Mendel!! You Lucky!!”

I so want that magazine, and I will get my greedy hands on it!!!

  • Fio

    Hi, Mendel
    Well, My post was…
    1) My PC has crashed this morning!
    2) I hate the blue screen and the little blue men!!
    3) Hi. Guinness. Hi, Mendel.
As you see, I never posted F-words/some pics. But JJ didn’t allow
it… Maybe the little blue men were displeased with my post, and they smurf attacked me!! lol
And thanks for the article. Yeah, Daniel will never join any social networking, but I want him to check twitter out. People adore his cowboy, many of them drooled Daniel in chaps tho… lol

Daniel Craig in ‘Cowboys & Aliens’: What Fans Thought
“Daniel Craig’s granite chin should get an Oscar nom,” one moviegoer said of the British actor’s performance in the film.
But what did moviegoers think of Craig’s performance?

PHOTOS: 10 Top Summer Superheroes of All-Time

“Big and blockbustery,” was how one moviegoer described the big-budget sci-fi/Western flick. Here are what several fans thought of the British actor’s — best known for playing James Bond in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace — take:

Kaity (@bittenbooks): “Just got back from seeing Cowboys & Aliens. Really enjoyed it! Loved Daniel Craig’s ‘tribute’ to Indiana Jones with the hat.”

Kaitlyn Kachmarchik (@Kaitlynanne): “Dear Daniel Craig, You rocked that cowboy hat. I hope there is a sequel. P.S. More James Bond please.”

Ty Fisher (@tfish29): “Cowboys & Aliens” gets a B. Daniel Craig is an absolute bada*s, but everything else was all sorts of…meh.

Tom McDowell (@Tdawg12ie): “It was fun. Long on action, special effects; a bit short on story (hard to believe, I know). Great movie if you like Daniel Craig.”

A user with the account @Aoi_Shireo wrote: I’ve actually never seen Daniel Craig in a movie before I saw Cowboys & Aliens last night. I have to say I was definitely impressed!”

Laura Benton (@lebenton): “Two hours of Daniel Craig strutting around in a*sless chaps? I’ve had worse Saturdays. #CowboysAndAliens”

Katrina Strauss (@KatrinaStrauss): “Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford were impeccable, and remind me I like seasoned men, too.”

Harry Hunsicker (@harryhunsicker): “#Cowboys&Aliens is a perfect summer flick,. Big and blockbustery. A compelling premise. Daniel Craig’s granite chin should get an Oscar nom.”

Brett Lincoln (@suprememajority): “After seeing Cowboys & Aliens, I think we need Daniel Craig in Arizona.”

Jacquelynne Steves (@TheNobleWife): “Daniel Craig = totally convincing Cowboy, especially for an Englishman.”

5 Reasons we want to make out with Daniel Craig
    Daniel Craig, We Heart You
There are some actors that make you melt, there are some that make you scream, and then, there are the select few that make you want to throw them into the nearest closet, lock the door behind you and kiss their lips clear off! Daniel Craig is one of those actors, with his crazy-cool ways and piercing eyes, and of course, let’s not forget the accent! How do we love thee Mr. Craig, let us count the ways…

    1. He was James Bond, and will be for four more films!

In Casino Royale, Craig reinvented the James Bond character by allowing him to be suave and rugged at the same time, without losing his charm. In fact, MGM President Harry Sloan loves his performance so much that he has cast him in the next four movies, making his grand total five. Boy is rapidly catching up to Bond icons Sean Connery (6) and Roger Moore (7) as one of the longest-running Bonds of all time.

    2. He rocked heels and dressed in drag in a televised UK ad for International Women’s Day and did it well!

International Women’s Day has been celebrated since the 1900s and is globally celebrated on March 3. It honors the achievements of women everywhere and how much further we have to go for gender equality. Daniel is an advocate for women everywhere, which only makes him hotter. In the short PSA, he says nothing, but allows his facial expressions to convey the true message of the spot. Two whole minutes of doing nothing but looking at DC, pure bliss!

    3. Puts the “wild” in wild West in the new film, Cowboys and Aliens

By losing his shirt several times during some key points in the movie, he makes the action between the cowboys and aliens seem boring by comparison. He plays an outlaw in the old West who works alongside (sigh) Harrison Ford when invaders from outer space arrive in a dusty Western town.

    4. He made marriage hot by settling down with Rachel Weisz

On June 24 in a small ceremony in upstate New York, lucky actress Rachel Weisz became Mrs. Daniel Craig at a top secret location. The twosome met six months ago while filming Dream House (opening September, 2011) and have been inseperable ever since.

    5. He loves being in love!

Said Craig about the L word, “Any relationship needs a little love and care at least once a day. I don’t want to get soppy about it, but you have to put a little time into it. It doesn’t matter who you are, you’ve got to keep putting it in.”

  • Fio

Daniel Craig: I have to protect Weisz
Daniel Craig refuses to talk about his relationship with Rachel Weisz because it would be like “shooting [her] in the back”.
The Hollywood hunk began dating the British actress last Christmas and they married secretly in June. The couple have kept tight-lipped about their whirlwind romance, and Daniel insists he doesn’t like discussing his new wife because he wants to look after her.
“I have a responsibility to protect the people around me. And I can’t protect them if I just give them up.
You know, ‘Let me tell you something about them…’ That’s shooting them in the back, because how can they defend themselves?” he told Esquire. “That goes for my family, my friends – and I expect that of the people I have around me. I say, ‘OK, we’ll look after each other, protect one another.’”
Daniel and Rachel can soon be seen together on the big screen in Dream House, which is released later this year. The 43-year-old accepts the couple will be bombarded with questions about their private life when they are promoting the thriller.
“We will, yeah,” he replied when it was suggested he will have to talk about Rachel ahead of Dream House being released. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. It’s no biggy.”
