I knew  some will be extremrly critical of my comments. But the truth is amongst most highly regarded critics the accent is paramount. If it’s distracting from the character because it’s noticably incorrect the chances  of him getting an Oscar nomination is at best slim. Plus he’s got some scarily stiff competition this year with Sean Penn and Brad Pitt in the Tree of Life, George Clooney and Ryan Gosling in Ides of March, Clooney again in “The Descendents”, Michael Fassbander in “Shame” or ” Jane Eyre” or ” A Dangerous Method” – which he co-stars with another potential Oscar contender Viggo Morterson,  Brendan Gleeson has put a really impressive performance in The Guard, and Domonic Cooper in  ” the devil double”, and hat’s to name only a few. I think “Coriolanous” will get oscar nods for Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Cox who are supposed to really impressive. And maybe be Butler’s co star in “Machine Gun Preacher” Souleymane Sy Savane might also get a best supporting actor nod.
If Butler gets the accent right in
“machine gun preacher”- going from the early reviews- and the early reviews only- he’s a shoo-in for a Oscar nomination. If he gets it wrong litle if any chance I reckon.

Hey Loli ; D …I’m fine, hope youre well too. The trailer looks really impressive, I’m a bit worried about the accent though. but like many have said , if the acting and the movie are good, nobody will pay much attention to accents.

Have a great night you all

P.S. I hope the rumours about Hunter Killer are true, it sounds like an interesting project.

@redOctober: I’m doing ok. I think he will be getting a lot more notice for good projects once MGP proves to be a huge success. Good things are coming to the big brute. Have a wonderful night Red.
    Goodnight to all JJr’s.

    CJ Says:

When watching the trailer I heard a bit of his scottish dialect coming through on a word or two…an american accent is hard for most british actors..and those who do it well will tell you it takes all their concentration to keep it I for one cannot fault him on a slip or two..
Even actors like Matt Damon and Ben Affleck slip up on a Boston accent when called upon to use it and those two grew up speaking it and living it..

Will the film be Oscar worthy???…who knows…I’ve seen movies win the Oscars that to me should have been thrown in the trash so you never know what might win or not..points going for it is that it is a true story and revelant to our it has a shot..

Brooke, you are trying too hard to have any credibility. I like toying with the crazies as much as the next person, but you have gotten really boring. Aren’t you tired of this yet?

And the feud between the regular crazies . . . even more boring.

    Besides, isn’t he gay?

    CJ Says:

One thing I have noticed about Gerry’s speech in movies is that he sounds breathless a lot of the time…not so much in interviews….don’t know if thats because he’s nervous, excited or because he has a breathing problem…it does sound like he has adenoid problems too…..I’m sure smoking doesn’t help and I think he should take a course in how to breath correctly…

  16. 141
    Foolish Says:

Brooke…the rest of the women that Gerard has been with or been speculated with have been either photographed with him or confirmed rumor or working for him. Your story is just that; YOUR STORY.
    Therefore – you are nothing.
There is no proof in print or otherwise off the JJ board. You are just as insane as that fake profile Twitter Kate psycho that got shut down.
Georgia – you all seem like the same delusional person that has issues. If Gerard wanted to be with you – he’d be with you and public about it. Until then, go the f*ck away.

Probably because he is out of shape and he smokes. I was the first person to break that news to you all…

    Mellifera Says:

@Oh dear: @CJ: I liked your comments on the Oscar talk. I have to say I will be very suprised if Gerry gets an Oscar nod for either movie (pleasantly surprised, of course). My personal opinion is that even if he nails the accent and gives an outstanding performance that there will still be a prejudice against him as not being your regular Oscar earning actor. I think in a lot of ways its an unfair prejudice as we all know he is capable of more than good performances, but past history can bite you on the bum.
I can’t remember who mentioned Matthew McConaghey (spl?) but who remembers how great he was in A Time To Kill. And now we have to put up with tripe like Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Failure to Launch. And we’ve had to put up with Booty Hunter and the upcoming sure-to-be-a cr@pfest PTF from Gerry.
But I am delighted for him that there is such buzz around MGP and the comments have been so good. He deserves it. I have to say I really am excited for these two movies (MGP and Cori).

    CJ Says:

I agree Melli…McConaughey was a good actor years ago but romcoms took over his life…but he is suppose to have a new movie out with serious undertones but cannot remember the title…

Sometimes winning an Oscar can be the kiss of death too because than everyone excepts you to deliver everytime after that…but lets hope he gets some kind of recgonition for a job well done…he needs at least the producers and the directors to take notice..

Yikes! Sorry for the potty mouth, got moderated. Just think the Brooke stuff is old and felt like being foul mouthed to someone. Why not a crazy?

  22. 147
    a question Says:

@Mellifera: I remember McConaughey in “A Time to Kil.” He was great. The romcoms ruined him.

I agree with all who have mentioned his ability to maintain an accent. I hope he can, and did, pull it off.

I believe being nominated for an Oscar may be better than actually winning it, with a few exceptions such as Tom Hanks.

    Amanda Says:

I think that this performance will pull at people’s heart strings and it is great that it shines a light on a very dark subject matter. I think these types of films have to be told because they present issues that are normally swept under the carpet.

The topic of child soilders is one that needs to be bought out into the open. The taking of children’ innocence is what makes Sam Childer’s rage and anger finally reach the surface. Gerry displays these emotions really well and has grown tremendously as an actor. He really deserves this Oscar. I really hope that he gets nominated for this part.

I thought the scene where he said he had ‘no shoes’ really broke my heart. He sounds so lost and nullified. So confused as to where to turn, or which direction to go?

    His performance will be compelling!
