Jessica Chastain: I'm a Perpetual Student
Here’s what the 30-year-old The Debt actress had to share:
On joking about her success and relative anonymity: “Every time I get to a set, the make-up girls are like, ‘Are you excited?’ I want to tell them that it’s not actually my first day on a film.”
On fight scenes: “Fight scenes are like a dance. You have to keep count; your scene partner is like your dance partner. If someone is off count, someone is going to get hurt. But I loved doing them; I wanted to do every single thing my character did.”
On hoping she’ll never stop learning: “I’m a perpetual student, and I hope that will never change. Al Pacino taught me so much about film acting, the most influential teacher, and Terry (Malick) was an exercise of not planning anything and completely being in the moment. I would follow him anywhere, work on anything, hold water bottles just to be on set… Now, I will sign up for things when I know it’s going to be a masterclass. When you’re working with someone good, you have to really bring it, because you have to match them. I always tell my agent I want to work with actors who are better than me, because it puts me at the top of my game.”
