Michelle Obama Covers 'Essence' October 2011

Michelle Obama poses on the cover of Essence‘s October issue.

Here’s what the 47-year-old First Lady had to share with the mag:

On her emotional trip to Africa: “One of the most beautiful aspects of [it] was the fact that there were three generations of us there. It was me, my two little girls [Sasha and Malia] and my mom [Marian].”

On her message to young women: “My story to young people around this country and around the world is, don’t look at me as the First Lady first; look at me as Michelle Obama, a girl who grew up on the South Side of Chicago. Because I was there, and this is attainable.”

On the “big , bright light” of her power as First Lady: “What I try to do is … stand in front of things that are more important than me, and then that light not only shines on me but on everything around me.”

I gave up on that magazine when they never gave Condi Rice a cover. They have had every high profile black American woman on the cover except for her.

Photoshop is a wonderful thing.

I got a free subscription to Essence with an on-line purchased. It just substantiate why I don’t buy magazines; EVERYONE was photo-shopped. The models looked like they were painted by JJ from Good Times lol. Horrible, horrible images. I wouldn’t want this magazine even for free. They talk about being real, yet not ONE image in the magazine is real.

Bye bye obama in November 2012

disappointed @ 09/02/2011 at 10:18 pm

I’ve lost all faith in this man. He’s in over his head and stubbornly won’t admit it. What a disappointment.

28 more influential black women? Im not sure if she made the list but much like her husband she has a resume that includes nothing but affirmative action gigs.

What’s next? A president that doesn’t speak english?

If the Living Large Obma’s stepped down now maybe the Country won’t be so far gone by 2012. Do the honorable thing. Off to another Vacay already.

GREAT

disappointed, +1

How bitter some of you are I wonder what type of homes you were raised in.The first lady has done a great job and long may she continue.

Now that ESSENCE is white-owned, I find that its content has changed considerably. It’s no longer a viable resource for women of the Black Diaspora. More weaves, more light-skinned models, even white women in some of the advertisements.

I admire Michelle, but what is is she defining as obtainable? Marrying someone who happened to become president? Now, if SHE were president, it would be different. But the only thing that seems to be obtainable here is marrying “up”.

@Weezie Jefferson:
I’m black and I’m asking you this: what’s wrong with having white women in Essence ads? there are black women in the white mags so I don’t see the problem!

Crazy psychos have to talk her down by resorting to racial attacks that don’t work. Pathetic!
Can’t handle her and your anger only makes me laugh!

She’s got flawless skin, have to say she looks amazing for a women approaching her 50s!!!!

I can’t understand how anyone can be annoyed or hate this woman.
Since she’s become first lady all she has ever down was work toward advancing issues for children in health and education.

The underlying bitterness some people have towards her are purely racial. They either fully acknowledge it by trying to resort to ugly racial barbs or its their sense that she, as a woman of color, does not deserve their respect or praise. That she’s illegitimate and doesn’t deserve to be in the White House.

Well get over it, she has some of the highest approval ratings of any first lady so its good to know irrational haters are in the minority!
