Gerard Butler Tears Up Talking About 'Machine Gun Preacher'

Check out this new poster for Gerard Butler‘s upcoming movie Machine Gun Preacher!

The 41-year-old Scottish actor recently sat down with the L.A. Times and teared up while discussing the film.

“This happened to me a lot when we were filming. I would just be overcome. I feel every emotion. I haven’t talked much about this movie in a while, and I did the other day, and I just started crying. I cried for about five minutes,” he explained.

During filming, screenwriter Jason Keller met with Gerard for “marathon sessions to deconstruct each scene.”

“I think it was a great responsibility for Gerry to play the role of a guy who is alive, a guy who is as dynamic as Sam with a story that’s so incredible,” Jason told the LAT. “During the sessions, and even when we were filming, I saw him going deeper and deeper [into the role]. It was an incredible burden [for him].”

    Gerry, I wish you great success on this movie and in life.

  • GFW

    The world of film has mastered a lot in the last few decades. Today, independent film enjoys a cred that Hollywood never did. Love the colors used in this poster.

    The ladies at WO have found some new stills from MGP and another small video showing a very touching scene when the kids see a playground built for them. I am really going to need a box of tissues when I see this movie. The simple things in life we take for granted are so awesome to some people of this world who have never seen such little things as a playground. God Bless you Sam.

    Laws wouldn’t necessarily stop the aggression that comes rippling through this unsettling assault on these young children. Laws simply protect the vulnerable. Is there ever a way to stop the root psychological damage from these violent encounters on these innocents? Take nothing for granted. The only attitude that brings peace, comfort and joy is that of gratitude.

    @Scarlett: What a wonderful thing you did, donating your time to improve someone else’s life. You can relate to this movie on a level that the rest of us will only get a glimpse of because of this movie. What a special memory you will always have, sad and uplifting at the same time.

    This film is sounding like a must see although I’m sure it won’t be easy to watch. If it could focus attention on the problems not only in Sudan but other troubled African countries and bring more aid to them, that would be more of an achievement than an Oscar.

  • Can’tGetEnough

    @Scarlett: Very nice to know that you did that Scarlett! I agree with Lolita, you’ll be able to connect with this movie on a much different level then the rest of us.

    Glad to see a new thread tonight. Soooo much bickering on the previous one and no one got anywhere with it. I still read all of the posts and I still respect everyone’s opinion! Since none of us really know the facts pertaining to last night, I think we can drop the entire “No show at the church/Dancing with Miley” thing. None of it matters anyway. We were able to see Gerry in a couple of interviews yesterday and that was great!

    Have a great night JJer’s!!

  • Earlyautumn’s Eve

    This film is going to cause a lot of controversy as well as perhaps become the movie that gets a lot of attention at awards time. I hope Gerry is prepared for not only the praise and recognition he’s going to get but the backlash too.

  • curious cat

    I skimmed the last 4 or 5 pages of the previous “Gerry at LAX” thread but this one was already up and I felt I had nothing to contribute to that discussion, which seemed to cover much ado about nothing with few real facts.

    Do y’all know what a katydid is? A large green horned nocturnal grasshopper, called katydid in some parts of the USA, known in Britain I understand as a bush cricket.

    At night the male katydid sings the mating song that gives the insect its name. With a whole bunch of them around, It’s an earsplitting choir that sounds like, “katydid, katydidn’t, katydid katy didn’t.” For hours.

    That what’s the last thread began to sound like, Gerry did, Gerry didn’t, Gerry should, Gerry shouldn’t, Sam did, Gerry didn’t, Gerry did, Sam didnt, Gerry was with Miley, no she was with her boyfriend. She is 18, she shouldn’t be there. She’s a star, it’s her life. She should. He should. It’s his life. Thumbs up thumbs down. Who’s wearing a sock? Who’s jealous? Who needs meds? Munster is 200 miles from Chicago, no 30 miles. He could have made it, he couldn’t have made it.. He was booked, he wasn’t booked, It was his fault, it was Sam’s fault. he was supposed to there, he wasn’t. He had no commitment, he didn’t meet his commitment. Katydid katydidn’t katydid katydidn’t….

    We are all entitled to our opinions, but…what were the facts? Just give me the facts, ma’am.

    Do Gerry’s People read and analyze this stuff as a barometer of public opinion about him? I sure hope so. We are the A-Team. The Focus Group. OK, I ask, why is he always going to Starbucks, not the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf? Why Coke, not Pepsi? We need to know this. ASAP. What we need toute suite is an in-depth interview by Piers Morgan. He’ll investigate and sort it all out. :)

  • Truth

    @curious cat:

    I cracked up laughing at your post! Just the facts ma’am just the facts lmao

  • Chicago Tribune

    @GFW:Your post contradicts yourself. You were correct in the first instance. Laws do not stop aggression or atrocities. Laws do not protect the vulnerable. Certainly not in places in the world that are lawless or run by corrupt genocidal governments. In essence, if we believe Mr. Childers, the LRA were government sponsored terrorists of the government of Sudan. Brute force only understands brute force but brute force can be a force for good if it is trying to eradicate evil and protect the vulnerable.

  • Minnie

    @curious cat: You’re f/king crazy!

  • Ehm….

    @curious cat:
    Unfortunately I don’t have the time to read through the other thread BUT please don’t tell me that Gerry’s trying to hook up with Miley Cyrus now. That would be too much even for Gerry. :( :(

    That is Frammie…

    Because Pepsi sucks. Everyone knows this.

    @Manny:
    OMG! That woman is everywhere, LOL. I wonder if she ever feels embarrassed about herself knowing that Gerry will see her all the time. I would friggin die of embarrassment because Gerry would think I was a stalker. I just don’t understand how her mind works. She’s a grown up woman not a crazy teenage fan. Weird that one.

  • curious cat

    @Ehm….:
    Didn’t you get it. Katy did katy didn’t. He was at the sane oartty. Maybe he danced with her. She was with her bf. What is the scandal?

    Check your geography-Munster is NOT 200 miles from Chicago. My cousin lives in Munster and works in Chicago-it’s practically a suburb!!

  • Whatever

    @curious cat:
    He REALLY shouldn’t dance with such a young girl. It certainly doesn’t look good. And with his reputation….. He’s really good at ruining things for himself.

  • CorBlimey

    @orphanannie:
    Um.. check your reading comprehension – CC was taking the p*ss out of the discussion on the last board. Crikey – pretty obvious, I thought..

  • Not a Stan

    @petite:
    I saw her right away when I watched this clip:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6k-jqMVchw She’s hard to miss if you know what I mean. Gerry must spot her right away too when he walks in. She has definitely put on some more weight since I last saw her (I’ve seen her in person).

  • No news

    Good grief…..they didn’t get it curious cat…..katy did, katy didn’t…we don’t know who he danced with, even if he did dance. Miley was there with her boyfriend. So now he can’t dance with an 18 year old? She is old enough to be in the club…..it seems like Gerry has a different set of rules for him than anyone else in the World…he’s too old for clubs, he’s too old to dance, he shouldn’t drink coke, shouldn’t drink too much coffee, he is too old to surf, should cut his hair, should dye his hair darker, should shave, should shave his neck……we need to shoot him and put him out of his misery. Did I leave anything out? Oh yes, he needs a wife, he needs children….Good grief..It seems no one else is happy with their life so they don’t want Gerry happy with his.

  • Scarlett

    So according to twitter Gerry has just arrived @TIFF.Apparently he’s causing quite a frenzy amongst the ladies.LOL.

  • Japanese Kioko

    @Not a Stan: I just watched theclip and I can’t help but wonder why Gerard is lying about his singing. He makes it sound like he had never sung before in his life before Phantom of the Opera. He even says that the singing coach said that he need some training because -he had never sung before- . He was IN A BAND when he was younger! They had gigs. I’m sorry but he’s twisting the truth here and it’s weird cause he’s even talked about getting thrown out of his own concerts because he was too wild on stage.

  • emily

    @Scarlett:
    I bet Frammie is there!!

  • Manny

    *giggling*
    .
    mrwillw Mr.Will-W.:Pop Maven
    Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green arrived in Toronto at same time as Gerard Butler. Fans scurried to Gerard; Megan went unnoticed. #TIFF11

  • CorBlimey

    @Japanese Kioko:
    Being a bit of a git on stage and screaming some rock and roll doesn’t really require a polished singing voice – when compared to the vocal requirements in an Andrew Lloyd Webber production anyway. I don’t think his previous “career” in the band was ever anything more than a few of his fellow law student buddies having a bit of fun. They probably made enough money from their gigs to buy themselves a few rounds of ale – it’s not like they were Scotland’s answer to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers or anything. Not really him “lying”, is it? Anyone who had never sung operatically before would need some intensive coaching to pull off a part like that – especially with the comparisons to Michael Crawford that would inevitably arise. Pretty harsh judgement, JK..

  • emily

    @Manny:
    That’s because female fans (especially Gerry’s!) are way crazier than male fans ;)

  • Rudy

    The no show is not hard to understand.

    If you limit this movie to a faith based audience, it will fail. For general audiences too much preachy stuff is a turn off.

    If anyone happened to tune in to part of the Church services, you will know why hopefully Gerry’s people were smart enough to tell him he was better off staying and doing interviews in Chicago.

    Religion is personal. Gerry is playing Sam. He is not Sam. Sam did what Gerry could not and should not have done, he made it about religion and faith to get these people in the Church to go out and see it.

    This movie has to appeal to broad audiences and Gerry is trying to sell it that way.

    It’s like the old line “render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and to God those things which are God’s”

  • oy

    Gerry’s on the cross again.

    Windy City? “Windy” is the perfect adjective for GerBu.

    If he’s willing to appear on that show, how long before he’s crashing Bat Mitzvahs in Schenectady?

  • Rifky_28

    I love u,USA.

  • curious cat

    @nyob:

    I agree. Coke is far better than Pepsi.

  • curious cat

    @Minnie:

    Just trying to insert a little levity, Minnie. Posters get carried away with opinions on everything GB does without even knowing the facts. It becomes a lot of whistling in the dark.

  • curious cat

    @Ehm….:

    No, this was the point, Ehm. Seems Miley Cyrus and her current bf were at the same party GB was. Supposedly he danced with her. The original item never suggested anything more. Laws a mercy! don’t put it on me for starting a rumor. I was pointint out how they start without facts.
    Ah, well, I see there is a new thread so probably nobody will come back here to read this.

  • GnotB

    @curious cat: I bet he wanted to sleep with her. She’s only 18 so he must have been drooling just thinking about it. Perfect for him. *feels like throwing up*

  • Chicago Tribune

    @Rudy: One appearance at a church one time hardly constitutes “limiting your marketing to a faith based audience” get real.

    Various groups from religious to political to professional have guests come and speak on a variety of topics. It doesn’t mean those guests or guest speakers ascribes to everything that particular group believes in. That’s a pretty narrow minded notion.
