Gerard Butler: 'Machine Gun Preacher' Receives Standing Ovation at TIFF!

The 41-year-old Scottish stud headed over to a local Starbucks for a pick me up in preparation for the evening premiere of his film Machine Gun Preacher.

The premiere of the film was a huge success! The heartfelt flick received a standing ovation at its conclusion, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The day before, Gerard and his Machine Gun Preacher co-star Michelle Monaghan hit the red carpet together at the Creative Coalition’s 2011 Spotlight Initiative Awards.

Standing ovations are great, but now on to the actual reviews. It’s pins and needles time for the filmmakers.

I hope this man gets the acclamation he deserves! Finally, a vehicle that showcases his talent, and not just his bod! Love this man!

MGP got a standing ovation at TIFF….I’m so happy for Gerry…. he truly deserves this.I wish him all the best in the future :)..
P.S. can’t wait to see MGP!!

    @Juliet of the Spirits:
First few reviews to come through rottentomatoes.com are looking good – no greenage to be seen. Same goes for Coriolanus. This is looking to be a great couple of films for Gerard. Let’s hope the momentum keeps up. This could be the next step up in his career that he, and all his supporters, have been waiting for..
    .
By the way, this video isn’t the best quality, but I love his earnestness about the role in this short snippet from the TIFF carpet. I’m not sure if anyone’s posted it yet because I can’t seem to keep up with the new threads. Apologies if you’e already seen it. :D

By the way, I happened upon some short pieces from the soundtrack and the music sounds great – some haunting, some uplifting, some indescribable in the way it gets inside you. Can’t wait to see the parts of the movie for the latter pieces of music. It’s more digital than I would have expected, but I think it should compliment the story really well.
    .
And do you know the worst part? Australian distributors have not picked it up yet. I’ve just been through all their websites and had a look at their lists. We might not even get to see it over here. I could cry. Damn it. I think I’ll have to fly overseas at the end of the year and hope like hell that it’s on the play list – do you think the hosties would mind periodically stocking me up on Kleenex during the flight? Could be fun for the poor person sitting next to me! :P

  • CorBlimey

Sorry – I don’t usually post this much in quick succession, but I’ve just listened to the song that Sam himself commissioned regarding his story. It’s by an Australian musician called Aaron Hendra and it’s absolutely fantastic – and Sam and the children all join in singing the last part of the song. The accompanying video also has a lot of photos from over at the orphanage and of the people of the Sudan. Not sure if everyone will be interested – no Gerard to be seen – but it’s a beautiful piece of music set to some amazing photographs.

Gerry, words cannot express the joy I am feeling for the success of MGP for you. I knew you had it in you. My big brute you ROCK!!!

  • http://www.justjared.com lolita

He shines when he has a good story and a great cast of actors to work with. Michelle, class act, Mr Shannon, The director, the writers, Sam Childers for being who he is. It all came together to make a great story come to life.
Have a great day JJr’s, off to work.

Glad to hear MGP got a standing O. Hope the critics agree and it gets award consideration. GB still looks like crap, but at least his acting is getting recognized!

@CorBlimey: I’m absolutely thrilled at the positive reviews. This film is really looking good, and I can’t wait to see it. Here’s hoping that it finds a distributor in your part of the world.

Shoutout to Manny. I know what a fan you are of Andy Whitfield – great sadness at his passing. By all accounts he was a lovely man, and will be sorely missed. He was taken much too young.

  • GFW

LOL from on to off! Love it. But it isn’t from fake to real, they’re both him. Yin and Yang. Ari is a long-time friend but not the best company (just my pov because all his worst press is with this guy for some reason) but a man must be entitled to his friends. They can be themselves with each other, and that’s what’s important especially after something this nerve-wracking! Hope he had fun! Love the shades.

  • GFW

ooOOps, need to say, well done Gerry as well. Kind of expected it because he really dove into this harsh topic and gave his all… and then some. He isn’t a warm and friendly guy. Some fans might not like it… or so a reader hinted who was there and saw it.

When I saw that post on Andy my heart just broke. He seemed to be a fine man with a lovely family. My heart goes out to his wife and kids. 39 is way to young to leave this life. Thanks for the shout out. His talent will be missed. ♥

  • TheDoctorIsIn

@Manny: Andy’s story could be rather instructional for Butler, but one would have to be somewhat self-actualized in his current circumstances (i.e. everyone rushing and gushing to tell him how wonderful he is every moment of the day) to internalize that message.

  • GFW

Why use the testy photo? Don’t get that. The neighborhood, sans the crowd, looks lovely. His hyper-activity is calmed by $tarbuck$.

Loved the quote from Andy’s wife that “he was a young warrior.”
    .
Humility is hard to come by in HW IMO. Everyone kissing your ass just because you show up. Butler has already embraced his ego with the false sense of HW IMO.
    .
Butler still has a long way to go if he wants the kind of career that say George Clooney has. Butler’s body of critically acclaimed work MAY just be starting. I hope somehow something helps to keep him grounded.

@CorBlimey: I guess “she who must not be named” has nothing better to do … oh F***k here we go again.

  • LLL

@Manny: No, he was “resting his eyes”….hahaha. What can one say? Gerard is Gerard. He lets a person know what they should or shouldn’t have said/done. But he says the first thing the pops into his mind. But that is one of the fun things about him… he is quick. But, I’m not sure if sometimes he thinks before he says things…. Stubborn…but the funny makes Gerard Butler endearing. Gotta love him.

Yes, Yes, I just knew it! Gerry just looks great and the premier went REALLY WELL, IT IS OSCAR TIME, I just knew it….Gerry and that Million Dollar Smile,,,,You go Gerry! I cant wait until MGP comes out, I am sooooo happy for our Gerry! Long over due!

Manny I agree with you. Our Gerard seems to have trouble keeping his positive career momentum going. When he is finally taken seriously by HW, instead of following up with more quality work to solidify his position, he comes up yet another romcom. Although we don’t know how PTF is going to fare, but apples don’t fall far from the tree so to speak. It’s a romcom for Pete’s sakes. I am just hoping this won’t be a repeat of post-300 for him. But I guess he just like everyone else got bills to pay
    .

It seems the buzz about MGP is building and I just hope all this positive reviews will translate into wider releases and good BO numbers, and better yet, a reward or two. I think he looks and especially sounds terrific, mature and on topic. Wish him big success in MGPl.

Thanks for the video. I love how he jerks his head back. He does that a lot. Looks really into this interview speaking to its impact. Really excited to see all and anything of the behind the scenes stuff. I think Gerry packs more a lot into one man, him.

    You’re welcome : )

Gerard Butler and Jessica Chastain seem to have a good easy going relationship. I would like to see them work opposite each other as the leads…might make for good chemistry. I think they get a kick out of each other…or a nudge. Two good personalities, that would be entertaining to watch on film.

  • Maggie P.U.

@ Scarlett (19) even though it is out there even on previous threads…. a certain “individual” still pulls her cr#p. It has been and is (like I said, even on previous thread I saw it and some twitters-some per Gerrybutlerspantry) said it was his Mom…. and it is clear in everything out there he is talking to many…his fans etc. Doing the Gerry thing. Sad, someone takes this and tries to turn it around to something no longer where another is having fun without the BS but where they “interpret it” as allegedly and supposedly “back with his ex”. Lawd uh mercy….. pathetic. And… a coward, using differetn monikers yet same pattern and wording. Have a nice day peeps.

    Peace.
