Michelle Williams Covers 'Vogue' October 2011

Michelle Williams channels Marilyn Monroe on the October 2011 cover of Vogue, on stands September 20.

Here’s what the 31-year-old actress, who wore Oscar de la Renta, shared:

On not being as guarded during interviews: “I feel like something has changed for me, but it’s a new change, so it’s going to be hard for me to describe. Maybe it has something to do with turning 30. I don’t feel as shy or nervous or self-conscious. I have more confidence that I can handle what life brings me. I don’t feel scared to have an idea and express it. I feel giddy about it because it’s a complete transformation. It’s like I’ve found my voice.”

On how daunting playing such an iconic figure was: “As soon as I finished the script [for My Week with Marilyn], I knew that I wanted to do it, and then I spent six months trying to talk myself out of it. But I always knew that I never really had a choice. I’ve started to believe that you get the piece of material that you were ready for.”

On gaining weight to approximate Marilyn’s curves: “Unfortunately, it went right to my face (puffs up cheeks to illustrate). So at some point it became a question of, Do I want my face to look like Marilyn Monroe’s or my hips?” (She opted for the former and filled out the latter with foam padding.)
Michelle‘s new movie, My Week with Marilyn, opens November 4. It’s about a week of Marilyn‘s life in 1956 while filming the movie The Prince and the Showgirl.

Her boobs are so huge! There are too many actresses playing Marilyn Monroe in different projects. Poppy Montgomery in the television mini-series, Blonde, Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn, Naomi Watts in the forthcoming film, Blonde, Angelina Jolie was rumoured in The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog, and of His Friend, Marilyn Monroe. I wish only one actress would play her in every project.

  • Jory

Even though I see Michelle Williams a very talnted actress yet I don’t see her as Marilyn Monroe !! Marilyn was so sexual so seductive so sexy and that so not Michelle that just my 2 cent in the subject but who knows maybe I’m wrong so I’ll see the movie 1st and maybe I’ll change my mind.

  • susan

Michelle as Marylin…is it joke?! She has absolutely nothing in common with her!

  • susan

Michelle plays Marylin…is it joke!? The have absolutely nothing in common…why the chose her!

  • Annie

Even with gaining weight I don’t think Michelle would look like Marilyn at all – Michelle is simply built too straight up and down which is why the weight did not look good on her. I know nobody looks exactly the same as anyone else, but when the actor playing someone looks *nothing* like who they are portraying and we all know what that person looks like, it’s distracting. Bad casting.

  • Ashley

I think Scarlett Johansson would have been a better choice.

  • You

@Ashley: Scarlett turned down this role.

  • You

For some reasons I don’t like her. Nothing against her acting, I just don’t like her appearence.

  • Alaia

I think perhaps people are misunderstanding the point of this movie. It is depicting Marilyn at her most vulnerable. Michelle will bring something new to the table other than a ‘good impression’. She will give her the depth that most actresses that just merely look like her could only dream of giving.

This film isn’t about her being sexy, it’s going unleash a new side of her that nobody seems to know about.

  • Mayle

I think the most worrying thing about the criticisms towards her casting is the fact that people are annoyed that she doesn’t look like Marilyn. WHO CARES? It’s about what she does with the role. Scarlett Johansson? I gave up on her a long time ago. What a sell out.

  • Dawn

Marilyn didn’t even look like Marilyn. Plastic surgery, and loads of make up is how she became iconic. Why don’t you guys see past the face for once. Everyone is so obsessed with how much she doesnt really look like her, you don’t even care about the film.

  • Dawn

Not the best angle for her face… makes her look like a mouse.

  • no

There is no energy coming through the photos. She is posing perfectly but the energy is dead. To be an actress, you have to create an “energy”. She just looks like she’s being instructed into these poses like a cardboard cutout. Marilyn didn’t need to be instructed because she was the epitome of “foxy” lady, she just did what came naturally. Michelle comes across as more school teacher than sex kitten. You either got it or you don’t!

  • luke

most boring actress in hollywood and she looks nothing like marylin

  • Sarah

Poppy Montgomery was definitely the best Marilyn! Michellle Williams is a good actress but she’s too skiny to play Marilyn,

  • Industry Loser

This is not someone playing Marilyn Monroe.
First of all she stuffed her bra with those rubber inserts and the makeup is that of a prostitute. Michelle likes to believe she was meant for hollywood. She would have been dumped a long time ago by the industry if it were not for Heath Ledger.

    He never loved you Michelle.
You are nothing but a boring wannabe who stole his future by trapping him and you certainly were not meant to play Marilyn Monroe.

  • Nano

Am I the only one who doesn’t believe her reason for not gaining weight? I mean, she was curvier on Dawson’s Creek, and her face didn’t look bloated, she was adorable! You don’t want to gain weight for a movie, fine, but come with a better excuse ;)

  • Nano

Am I the only one who doesn’t believe what she say about the weight gain? I mean, she was curvier on Dawson’s Creek and her face wasn’t bloated or anything, she looked adorable! You don’t want to gain weight for a movie, fine, but come with a better excuse Michelle :)

Scarjo never got to turn down the role. They didn’t pick her and Ask yourself why does Scarjo turn down the role?
Do yourself a research before comment.

  • Industry Loser

She certainly does not have it. Your comments were the best.

  • You

@MOnny:First of all, I don’t care why Scarlett turned down this role. And I know what I am writing. I havent made up this story myself. Go to the IMDb page of this movie and read the trivia part. You’ll see where I took Scarlet turned down this role. Second YOU yourself go and do research before jumping on my comment.

  • BloodbuzzOhio

@Industry Loser: Oh here we go, mention Heath Ledger for no reason. She had a career before Heath Ledger. What a ridiculous thing to say. Stop acting as if Heath was some saint.

  • http://verysexysexy sharyllee

Michelle did not look good like Marilyn… Marilyn is prettier and sexy than Michelle. do not copy marilyn at all!! do not care for michelle even I do not like all her movies. yuck!!!

  • Super Cool

MM was looking sexy but also classy (with that hair) because she had very soft looks and pure beauty. She was graceful yet she was curvy. I really do not see Michelle Williams as MM. She is pretty but she does not look classy with that hair and make up, unlike MM. Acting skills are of course more important than the looks, however MM is an icon because she was unique so the looks are very important in this case. I can not think of anybody who could be MM, including Scarlett Johansson, even she does not have the grace that MM had.

  • bobbi

Lovely pics…and you don’t have to look exactly like a person to portray that person. It’s a matter of capturing their essence.

  • Josie

I agree, you don’t have to look exactly like someone to portray them. Capturing Marilyn’s “essence” is no easy feat. But judging from these pictures I would guess that MW’s has failed. Marilyn exuded sexiness with just a look or a gesture. I feel like I am looking at a soccer mom in these pics. Very flat and blah. I’m not excited to see the movie from these pics.

  • Jo

Michelle Williams is so stunning… I love her! WOW

  • Zazz

Movie will be a dud. I’ve seen too many comments on how she doesn’t fit the part. And not just here. Movie doesn’t have a chance.

  • Deanna

Michelle wouldn’t be half as famous without having Heath Ledger child, may he rest in peace.

  • Annie

@no: You got it – aside from her looks her energy is all wrong – Michelle’s vibe is too introverted and aloof for Monroe. The pose with her nose in the air isn’t very MM-like at all.

  • anon

Yup that’s why she continues to milk his death even though they were no longer together when he passed away.

  • jaye

There is no one who is going to ‘look’ like MM, so the fact that MW doesn’t look like her is not important to me. However, even without makeup MM had a fresh s*ensual quality about her (even in pictures); that IMO is more important to playing the part. MM made s*ensuality seem effortless, whether it was or not. Can MW evoke that quality, so far, not in pictures IMO, but you’d have to see the movie to determine if she has the acting chops for it. If might be good to remember that Marilyn Monroe was not the s*ex kitten 24/7.
Frankly, a lot of actresses won’t do this type of role, MW gets an A for guts. Playing someone who is a fictional person is much easier. If you fail in delivering what is expected in the portrayal of an real life icon, it’s an epic fail.

  • RIP MM

There can be only one Marilyn, everyone else is a poser.

  • http://JustJared Katie

RIP MM—–Yes just like MM there can only be one…If one day they make a movie about Heath it will be the same way…There was only one Heath Ledger…..I believe Heath is very proud of the way Michelle has raised Matilda and kept her out of the spotlight!!! And personaly I think Heath always loved both His Girls …..The pictures of Michelle are Beautiful and I do think Heath is looking down with so much pride …..

  • Truth

Michelle as Marilyn doesn’t work. Monroe had a lively, vibrant personality and natural sex appeal. Michelle lacks personality and sex appeal, and no amount of makeup can give her either.

Even in this pic, she’s flat, and her face emotes NO emotions.

Both she and Naomi Watts are poor choices to play Marilyn.

  • A

I just want to punch on the head everyone who’s bitching about Michelle Williams playing Monroe. For Christ’s sake, most of you “Marilyn fans” have never even seen a movie of hers. You act like she’s a god and anybody who tries to reach her lever must be killed or something. Give me a break. Not only are you missing the point of the movie, which is to portray Marilyn as a person and not a sex icon, and for that, they needed an actress and not an impersonator (which Williams is, and a very good one by the way), but you’re also committing the biggest cliche ever: judging a book by its cover (in this case, judging a movie before watching it). No, she does not resemble MM all that much, but she’s an amazing actress and she will probably >act< like Marilyn, which is EXACTLY the purpose of the movie in the first place.

  • Halli

Embarrassing. What a completely charmless photo of a charmless actress. Marilyn didn’t become a legend because she was just another blonde actress you know.

  • Industry Loser

Marilyn was the most beautiful actress and I love Elizabeth Taylor also.
They were very talented and pretty women.
How dare you defend someone who should not play Marilyn at the box
This is the first Marilyn Monroe movie ever to be at the box office and the jackass director picked Michelle Williams.

Marilyn Monroe deserves a much better actress to play her.

  • needtostop

People need to stop….there is no way someone as skinny as Michelle can portray the beauty of Marilyn Monroe…which was in essence her full body. Maybe michelle should have gotten a body double…Sophia Vergara, Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce lol….lol than maybe she would look more credible. Oh and btw she looks nothing like Marilyn.

  • hannah

i don’t like it at all…………. i think rose mcgowan would have been better!!

  • lurking

    Not even a trace..NOT Marilyn.

  • okay

It’s not about appearances!! You people need to stop!!!

Did Johnny Depp resemble Hunter S Thompson? Morgan Freeman look like Nelson Mandela??

Michelle knows how to act. I have no doubt in my mind that she will capture the inner complexity of turmoil and naivete that Marilyn Monroe once embodied.

And by the way– Scarlett Johansson is NO Marilyn Monroe. She may have a vaguely voluptuous figure (I say vaguely because she seems to fit into size 5 jeans just fine lately…Christina Hendricks, on the other hand) doesn’t make her the New Marilyn.

MICHELLE IS ELEGANT. And while she is not identical, I am sure she can convey the delicate spirit of Marilyn.

  • okay

I am tired of people saying that SJ is a good role model for all women re: body image. What people are really saying is that she is the ideal type of ‘curvy’ –not too skinny, not too large.
    1. Yes, she is buxom but there is more to that than having ‘real curves’, and surely she isn’t the only example! Why don’t people spend time giving props to America Ferrera, Adele, Jennifer Hudson and Mo’Nique for their curves and being themselves? Simple. Because they are not ‘proportioned’ and don’t have a tiny waist. People celebrate Scarlett because she is a slim girl with meat in the right places. An hourglass.
    2. Who’s to say that having curves is the only natural way to be? Many women are naturally slender (Natalie Portman, Audrey Hepburn) and their body type shouldn’t be considered void. SOOOO…LEAVE MICHELLE WILLIAMS ALONE!! IT’S NOT ABOUT LOOKS! IT’S ABOUT HAVING THE HEART!

  • okay

Michelle wasn’t chosen just because she was blonde either. I thought acting was all about spirit, anyway, and you haven’t even seen her in the role yet. You can love Marilyn and believe that she is irreplaceable, but you shouldn’t dismiss another actress as “charmless”. Ps. She got 2 Oscar nods, how many do you have? Don’t judge unless you’re in the trade. It’s called decency.

  • Jason

@Ashley: It’s not all about appearances. What elegance does Scarlett have other than wearing pretty dresses? Michelle can dig deep and act out the most complex roles. She is a veteran, and only 3 years older than Scarlett.

  • kat

she looks pretty but she’s no marilyn

  • oy

Don’t you love when Hollywood movie stars portray dead movie stars in order to be taken seriously as movie stars?

  • Rachel

she looks stunning, cant wait to see the movie!

  • Heidi

OMG, she looks beautiful. she is an actress, she doesn’t have to be marilyn- she has to play her. give her a chance, you didn’t see the movie but you judge her.
And i wish heath could see her right now- michelle is adorable.
