Oh fer cryin out loud, will this little bi*&^ make up her mind. ‘dont call me latina’ oh no wait ‘Im part of this wonderful group of Latina actresses’ but ‘dont call me latina’ and then poses for front cover of ‘Latina’ She really is a moron. shes vapid, empty headed and so hypocritical its hysterical. every time she tries to sound smart or give her opinion on something shes just ends up looking the fool…which is very amusin for the rest of us

# 6

I thought she said she didn’t like to be called a Latina because “she didn’t feel as one”…

# 7

Perhaps she said that because she doesnt want to be type-cast as the latina role in movies. Jessica you are amazing.

# 8

She’s not a ‘latino’.

How’s machete 2 coming Jessica? Can the taxpayers please foot the bill like 1?

I’ll say it again. Jessica should return to acting on TV instead of films. She was so good in Dark Angel but she’s awful in films. TV is where she should be. :)

She shouldn’t be calling herself a Latina. She can’t even speak a word of Spanish. Grow up, Jessica. Just because your skin is dark it doesn’t make you a Latina. As a real Latina myself, I can tell you we don’t consider you a Latina at all. You’re American, you should embrace that not try to be part of a community you’re not just to feel ‘special’.

Salma Hayek and Shakira are still overrated among Latinos!

@kawm: Salma and Shakira are half Arab all of the so-called “Latinos” who make it big in Hollywood are half white.

She says Latino now because they launched a very vindictive campaign against her to force her to say Latino. Of course she isn’t, she is American and part Danish and was born in LA so why should she have to claim otherwise. They Latinos in America make those who don’t believe in lumping all people with a Spanish last name in the same bunch, are made to feel ashamed and self-loathing if they don’t join in the politically correct crowd and shout Latino as well, but they don’t feel that way secretly. People from Colombia are proud to be Colombians, people from Peru are proud to be Peruvians, Argentinians are proud to be just that and do not want to be associated with American Latinos because they are not the same as they are.

@Mexicano: Uh, Zoe Saldana was born in America but her father is Dominican and her mother is Puerto Rican, which means she’s fully Latina, and in case you forgot she’s extremely successful

The term Latino, despite its popularity is still highly debated among those who are called the name. Since the adoption of the term by the US Census Bureau and its subsequent wide spread use there have been several controversies and disagreements, specially in the US and Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries. Regarding it as as arbitrary generic term, many Latin American scholars, journalists and Indigenous rights organizations have objected against the mass media use of the word “LATINO” pointing out that such ethnonyms are optional and should be used only to describe people involved in the practices, ideologies and identity politics of the supporters.
Journalist Rodlfo-Acuna writes: When and why the Latino identity came about is a more involved story. Essentially, politicians the media and marketers find it convenient to deal with the different US Spanish speaking people under one umbrella. However, many people with Spanish surnames contest the term Latino. They claim it is misleading because no Latino or Hispanic nationality exists since no Latino state exists, so generalizing the term Latino slights the various national identities included under the umbrella. US official term “Hispanic” had its origins in the 1970 Census using this criteria: Spanish speakers and persons belonging to a household where Spanish was spoken. Persons with Spanish heritage by birth location. Persons who self-identify with Spanish ancestry or descent.

@Mexicano: Btw and both Salma and Shakira were both raised in their corresponding Latin countries they grew up immersed in those cultures so regardless of their Arab blood they are culturally full latinas; That is why always thank they’re countries first.

Puerto Rican and Dominican would make her from slave ancestry on both sides of her family. Spain had the Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in bondage for close to 400 years that is why they have Spanish last names the Spanish slavemasters named their human property to declare ownership.

@Peruvian FOREVER!!!!: I like that you said that, because I’ve been to Panama, Colombia, Argentina, and Uruguay and none of the people from those countries call them selves Latino, they always say Hispano- or Hispanic

There is no such thing as a Latino especially the ones raised in America. I agree, that word was invented by activists to try to force Spanish speakers from various countries to forget about their own nationality and not to care about their own customs. It is racist when the politicians and media uses it to because they don’t want to deal with Mexicans born and raised in America as Mexicans or other Spanish speaking people living here from other countries as individuals. Colombians have the right to be called Colombians and have their culture and country respected. Not all Spanish speaking people have the same culture so why should we be called one thing that doesn’t make any sense. I am proud to be Mexican but Jessica Alba has never self-identified as Mexican, it wasn’t spoken in her home and she wasn’t raised that way so why can’t she claim just American if she wants to?

I am referring to Zoe Saldana. And there is nothing dark about Jessica, in fact only white Latinas looks that way according to the world view, they don’t look like Zoe.

Abejundio @ 09/15/2011 at 8:18 pm

I hate it when some of them claim Latino is a culture when there are over 26 spanish speaking countries and they all have different cultures and ways the onlt thing in common is the language and we come to that by different means. The spanish speaking people who were slaves have their own cultures, etc. Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic and others that is vastly different from spanish speakers who do not come from places with deeply rooted slave origins. Not all spanish speakers are the same just like other people we are all different with our own cultures and I don’t like that word Latino, I am proudly Mexican.

Thanks for the lesson. I’m we were a very interested… It all makes sense now.
FYI. There’s was no Spanish speaking who were slave with deeply rooted slave origen (??? Confusing?????) Spanish speaking were not slaves in Puerto Rico, Colombia etc.. They were native Indians or Indigenous people who spoke there native language and the Spaniards who traveled to America (because America is not just the U.S… ) spoke Spanish…… We are just mixture of different races…
