Daniel Craig: Rooney Mara is 'Spot On' As Lisbeth

Daniel Craig: Rooney Mara is 'Spot On' As Lisbeth

Daniel Craig leaves his hotel and hops into a cab on Thursday (September 22) in New York City.

Earlier in the day, an extended trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was released!

Daniel, 43, recently spoke with MTV about knowing that Rooney Mara was right for the role of Lisbeth Salander.

“I think I knew pretty early on. I screen-tested with her a couple times and I saw exactly what [director David Fincher] was after with her,” Daniel said.

“If you read the books, she’s just spot-on. Rooney herself is actually really rounded and normal — she’s not boring, honestly — but she had to bring this very broken human being to life and she did it brilliantly,” he added.

Sooooo excited for this remake. :D

If she really was spot on we would be able to see it in the trailer and stills instead of him having to defend her. Im sorry but im not buying this. Ill wait until the reviews come out, if they are good I ll go watch but as of now im not taking it seriously, even if Finchers directing.

  • Creed

okay… I just saw the extended trailer.. I still cant see Rooney playing Lisbeth. Hopefully they will put more parts with Daniel Craig than her because its bugging me that she cant act better than Noomi Repace..

  • Lotte

Tell me, why do you think that Rooney cannot act?

  • Remake
  • http://www.letmeknow.pl Ogłoszenia

I loved the Millenium trylogy by H. Larson and so the orginal movie (all 3 parts) despite the fact I dont understand swedish. Looking forward to see Daniel as a Michael Blomkvist :)

  • Creed

    @Lotte:
i never said Rooney Mara cant act I said that they hired an actress who isnt as good as the original. It by no means says anything about her acting ability, just that the original girl was way better and could actually bring out the anger and vulnerability of Lisbeth. If you look at just stills from the original flick it shines through the screen but with Rooney she just looks too normal.

  • GO ROONEY GO

You’re a great Lisbeth, very true to the book, not the buff and way too old looking Lisbeth portrait by Rapace.

  • Crystal ball

@7 – you are talking as if you had seen the whole film. With remarks like this, you only get on the ridiculous side. Many already agree, that Rooney MIGHT have captured the essence of L better. We can’t tell for sure before we have seen the film, but surely should wait until then.

@8 – agreed. She looks much more like the L in the books.

  • to 6

    H. Larson who?
    His name is Stieg Larsson.

  • YouBetYa

LoL that is the 2nd cast member basiclly saying that rooney is better then noomi, I smell something rotten.

  • susan

    @YouBetYa

who is better: Noomi or Mara? i think it’s a matter of opinion.

  • Sam

@GoRooneyGo – very obvious you either work for her PR team or you’re a relative … so how is it you know Rooney “captured the essence” of Lisbeth? Yeah, thought so. And you have the nerve to diss Noomi, WHO IS LISBETH SALANDER. The original and one and only. I love Fincher and hope his version is good … BUT NO ONE WILL REPLACE NOOMI. Can only hope Rooney does a decent job.

  • to YouVetYa

What about taking some reading lessons? He didn’t say anything like that, he didn’t even mention Noomi. And why would he, he hasn’t seen the Swedish movies.
And just in case that you are not able to read, listen to him in that interview.

just thinking that if Angelina were 25 she would have been great in that role kind of like her role in girl interrupted…something with rooney’s demeanor is off, i mean she’s ok, but…if angelina were 25 she would have been awesome

I guess it’s the screening for press. Only Southeast Asia? Because Warner Bros hold the overseas copyright, eh? Well, we all know Universal is the s***!!

  • Amy

I thought that transformation of Rooney was surprisingly good. I’ve found still another surprise. A lot of film critics on major presses overestimate Rooney. I mean, this clip is just trailer, not finished film.
    They claimed:
    Rooney is GREAT.
    Rooney is MVP.
    Rooney is better than Noomi.
Rooney Rooney deserves Oscar – she looks like Heath Ledger.
Can she handle it? Can she beat Glenn Close or Meryl Streep? Ah, yes, Rachel, of course ;)

  • Elle

Rooney has been bashed by many people until 2nd trailer came out. In the movie, she is the key success factor. So Sony ( or her PR team) must put in a good word for her as the great Lisbeth. I feel that an Oscar campaign for her started. She is obviously climbing the career ladder!!

Dream House: Review By Lim Chang Moh – A Suspense Thriller for the Thinking Viewer
    http://www.movieweb.com/movie/dream-house/RE3PRkZOvfHv78
    OVERALL: 3.5 GREAT
    Story: 3
    Acting: 3.5
    Directing: 3.5
    Visuals: 3

Editor and author Will Atenton (Daniel Craig) quits a high power job in Manhattan to relocate with his wife, Libby (Rachel Weisz), and two girls to a quaint New England town. However, as they settle into their new life, they discover that their house was the murder scene of a mother and her two children. Will tries to befriend his neighbour Ann Patterson (Naomi Watts) and find out from her what happened but she is not too eager to talk.

Meanwhile, Will’s younger daughter starts seeing someone lurking outside the window at night. As Will pieces together the haunting puzzle, he must find out who murdered the family in his dream house before the culprit returns to kill again.

“Dream House” is not a suspense thriller that will jolt you with sudden loud music and cheap scares. Instead, it plays games with your mind, keeping you guessing about what’s happening and making you sort out the plot yourself. Now, if you like your thrillers done this way, then go for it. If not, this one is going to be a nightmare…

Director Jim Sheridan’s plot build-up is almost by-the-book and he makes no apology for it. The opening scenes show Will as a devoted father and loving husband. At first, his daughter’s visions of a shadowy figure are dismissed quietly, but when Will gets physical evidence of someone lurking around, our curiosity heightens. Sheridan, who gave us “My Left Foot” and “In The Name of The Father”, is not delivering this thriller to his audience in a platter. He just dishes out the cards and lets his audience sort them out – at least until the closing sequences.

At first, it feels rather weird to see beefcake Craig as a domesticated guy. However, there is a good chemistry between he and Weisz who also lends a loving and tender touch to the proceedings. The kids, played by Claire and Taylor Geare, are also convincing and adorable. It would have been great to see more of Naomi Watts but her supporting role is rather limited – and she acquits herself professionally. Fans of Rachel G. Fox, the Scarvo girl in TV’s “Desperate Housewives”, will find her in a cameo as Ann’s daughter Chloe. All in all, a thriller for the thinking viewer. (limchangmoh.blogspot.com)

Thanks Fio for the links. I am going to see dream house on Friday, but I am wondering if this is going to be a limited release. I went on line for showtimes to make dinner/movie plans with friends and the amc cinema we go to, which has 25 theaters, is not listing showtimes for it yet; they are listing two other movies opening on that date, what is up with this movie, for goodness sake,it has a shirtless Daniel!!

    Metro interview with Jim Sheridan.

    Director up in the clouds
    http://www.metronews.ca/toronto/scene/article/980449–director-up-in-the-clouds
im Sheridan tries to capture the intangible in his work.
New film Dream House is a psychological thriller that’s a departure from his typical character drama fare.

Shortly into my conversation with Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan I begin to understand what his daughter Kristen meant when she said her father “exists up in the clouds. In order to communicate with him, you have to go up into the clouds yourself.”

When I mention the quote to the Dream House director he laughs and tries to explain.

“I think that’s probably true in relation to the way I approach actors and story. I know directors like Tim Burton or David Fincher, they’re very structured visually. Then there’s the approach that says, ‘It’s emotional over here.’

But emotions are invisible and it’s hard to catch the invisible. Trying to catch the invisible is very interesting because it’s just something that happens in front of you rather than something that has happened, as Hitchcock said, and then I’m only shooting it.”

A scheduled 10 minute interview stretches into 35 minutes as the three-time Oscar nominee chats amiably about the movies he thinks will eventually become classics — “the poetic ones that don’t make as much sense” — on artistic vision — “it’s a product of interior emotion” — the meaning of the Kubrick film 2001 — “it’s a baptism!” — and, of course, his new movie.

In Dream House real life newlyweds Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz are Will and Libby, a happily married couple who leave New York City for a simpler life in New England. Of course, this is a thriller, so their hopes for a happy life are dashed when they discover their new home was the site of a grisly murder.

“It’s a genre piece,” he says.

“It’s a psychological thriller with horror overtones and detective story overtones, but essentially, deep down it’s a love story. It’s in the vein of A Beautiful Mind and Shutter Island. We’ve made the kind of movie with thriller and horror elements, but women will like it.”

Sheridan may exist in the clouds, but he is realistic about the state of the movie business. The kind of character dramas that made him famous are harder to get made these days.

“One day, I don’t know what day it was, maybe a Thursday, about a year ago, everybody decided you couldn’t make a drama anymore,” he says. “I think there was a surfeit of independent movies when there was a surfeit of money,” he says. “In Ireland we built too many houses, in America we made too many movies.”

  • to Fio

My guess is that the interviews were taken during the reshoots. Rachel is not wearing her real wedding band and the background of all interviews (there are more on traileraddict) are from the set.

  • Fio

    Hi, Elise
Warner Bros carried out the screening of Dream House in not only Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Singapore) but also in France. I read dozens of reviews. They received some mixing reviews. Reviewers who evaluated the movie low are giving away. lol
On the one hand, reviewers who appreciated the movie regard this as a kind of “The mind story”. And the opinion that both agree is that this movie is NOT a horror movie. All reviewers said that they couldn’t make why this movie received a PG-13 rating, and the poster and TV clip are designed to deceive or mislead either deliberately or inadvertently.
Here are a few more reviews for you:

I thought that clip (Rachel’s) was taken in Toronto (#40). She wears the same dress/watch as that time. I think Rachel is wearing her real wedding ring (the simple plain gold ring). Well, as you said, those clips (#34,35, 36, 37) were taken on the set, I think so too. But I really don’t care when those clips were taken. They (Daniel & Rachel) are promoting DH as a professional actor even if they dislike the finished film. Yeah, they are respectable real professional.
