Yao Ming: Ban Shark Fin Soup!

Yao Ming calls for a ban on shark fin soup during an event in Shanghai, China on Thursday (September 22).

“When demand happens, the buying happens and the killing happens,” the 31-year-old recently retired Chinese basketball star said at the event organized by the international conservation group, WildAid.

Yao, who was joined by Virgin founder Richard Branson, committed to stop eating shark fin soup in 2006 after learning of the cruel and wasteful practice of “‘finning”’ and the threat of extinction facing many shark populations as a result of demand for their fins.

7-foot-6 Yao, along with Leonardo DiCaprio, Ian Somerhalder, Edward Norton, Rosario Dawson, director James Cameron, and dozens of other stars, just sent a letter to Governor Brown supporting the ban, acknowledging the “importance of the continued existence of shark species in maintaining a healthy ocean ecosystem.”

Good for him to stand up (no pun intended) for what he believes in. He seems like a decent guy. They should find a humane way to attain this shark fin. If they are just taking the fin and discarding the shark to die, that’s terrible. I only say this, because we in America eat animals like cow, pig, chicken, etc. So, there should be a humane way, if possible to do the same with shark. I know there are people who may disagree, and be against eating meat all together and I respect their opinion.

At last, Jared, a valuable news addition to your website – well done! So at last we have a breather from the hobos and idiotic self-obsessed divas who cannot act (ahem KB?!) that normally grace your pages, but instead here we have a newsworthy, poignant pledge to the world to stop harming our fabulous fellow earthlings (see the film with wonder-vegan, Joaquim Phoenix narrating to know what I mean) who are critically endangered. These are personalities worth lauding and worth the webpage space! As a temporary resident in the Far East I am far too close to the action and know how urgent this call to stop killing off the remaining 10% of our sharks in this corrupt industry which makes almost as much money as the drug trafficking cartels. Go Yao Ming, Richard Branson, Leo et al! :-)

Can someone please tell me the significance of those white celebrities joining the protest? Does it mean anything for the majority of shark fin soup eaters, i.e traditional Asians. They do not care about the Vampire Diaries resident hottie. Its like what statement does the protest think they are making towards Asians?

And anyway, they dont know the significance of shark fin soup in Asian culture. Yes, it is cruel, I get that, but do you think that you are going to stifle an Asian tradition through applying Western rhetoric and western celebrities? It is about as effective as trying to put out a fire with some pink sprinkle doughnuts.

And its like “oh, im Leo DiCaprio, I have taken the hard hard step of giving up Shark Fin Soup”, erm, i doubt that you or any of the white celebs even EAT the stuff so what credibility does adding you to the campaign make?

And anyway I would doubt all these white people interferring with Asian culture would agree if Asian people said “stop eating your Turkeys”, or anything else so closely aligned with Western culture.

So what Im getting at is that this campaign is so poorly thought out. Those western celebs think they can save the poor cruel Asian world with their western concepts of rights and animal welfare etc. It is so patriarcal and laughable. You think that Mr Wong who lives in downtown Beijing cares that Rosario Dawson is pleading for him to give up his delicious bowl of shark fin soup? Um, no. If they put melamine in baby formula causing severe health problems to children, do you think they are going to care about a celeb reaching out their hand in pity for their lack of morals, no.

But getting Yao Ming is THE SMARTEST THING EVER!
