Gerard Butler: Groucho Guy!

Gerard Butler: Groucho Guy!

Gerard Butler flashes his baby blue eyes as he leaves the Groucho Club on Tuesday (September 27) in London, England.

The 41-year-old Scottish stud recently opened up about his slim down, and how his critics do not give him enough credit.

PHOTOS: Check out the latest pics of Gerard Butler

“I go through all that work and do it for different roles, and get big for 300 or get heavier for a role, or slim down for a role… It’d be nice if they [my critics] went, ‘Well look, he’s committed,’” Gerry said to a San Francisco newspaper.

Last week, Gerard hit the red carpet at the LA premiere of his film Machine Gun Preacher.

FYI: Gerard is wearing Simon Spurr 2 Year Wash denim with Rogue‘s snap front shirt.

    Maybe he should ‘commit’ to a healthy life style instead of blaming the press for his appearance.

    Oh dear, in London for 5 mins and already clubbing. Didn’t realise there were so many clubs that let in the over-40s, lol.

    Congratulations, Gerry! MGP’s off to a wonderful start & had a very respectable 4 cinema limited release this weekend. It’s going to be hitting many more venues in the weeks ahead and a lot of people will come away with a new outlook on the situation in Africa and a new respect for you as an actor and humanitarian. Way to go honey – you deserve it.

    Love,
    Paisley

    Gerry looks gorgeous whether he’s dressed to the nines or slightly rumpled. As for me I prefer rumpled! I also am starting to think that he should dress exclusively in darker colors. They really complement his beautiful eyes. Whoops here I go again…swoon…

    Peace,
    Paisley

    Why dislike a movie you haven’t seen? What’s with all the hating on Gerry? What’d he do to you? Everyone involved took a risk. Did it afraid. I’m proud of him. He’s humble and keeping it real. He’s every right to feel self-confidence from the efforts!
    -
    Besides critics are admiring it’s true grit, and his performance! A movie doesn’t need to be successful to be respected. It doesn’t need to be popular for Gerry to get some sort of nomination out of it either.
    -
    Moving it out to November (if rumor is true) moves it in with the Big Boy films. ;o)

    @GerrysFascinatingWoman: Hello GFW, Thank you – couldn’t have said it better. Peace…Paisley

  • My crystal ball says….

    …even a masterpiece like The Shawshank Redemption wasn’t appreciated until it hit DVDs (or was it still videos back then -I don’t remember!). I still hold out hope for MGP even if it stays limited release.
    @GerrysFascinatingWoman:
    But I’m not sure about the comment of GB being humble. Don’t see much of that, but that’s not to say it isn’t there underneath all that over-the-top macho bravado……

  • http://paisley3691.livejournal.com paisley3691

    @Try sitting ina office allday: Hello “Try”. I sit in one all day too! One thing we’ll never have to worry about with Gerry is cinematic boredom. He goes out of his way to avoid getting into a rut so we just never know what kind of film he’ll do next. Take move 43 – a demented LEPRECHAUN? Hah!
    Peace, Paisley

    @14, “but that’s not to say it isn’t there underneath all that over-the-top macho bravado…” Exactly. I get a sense he’s crafted an ‘image’ so sticks with it to protect himself, which is fine. He’s very sensitive but grown a thicker skin too.
    -
    Besides a lot of films never make it that are very good, Triage by Colin Farrel./ Ever heard of it? Didn’t think so. Came out in 2009. Great performance. Good story. Make my point? What does he do? Keep acting!
    -
    There are things the carefree and detached actor are bottling up.
    -
    Don’t understand why so many are so into his failing? Why? Makes no sense to me. I’m like he did this afraid. Did it for less. Did it for the message. Did it because he wanted to! That’s enough for me but not his fickle fans in need of pretty parts. Meet the new and very improved Gerard Butler people.
    ~K

  • ha ha

    He needs an image make over, talented as he may be he gets little respect esp with critics and that is his own fault

  • ha ha

    Also he lacks the skill to drop his natural accent unlike so many other actors that do it with ease

  • GerrysFascinatingWoman

    WETA.org where I “Listen Live” to classical music at work just mentioned Machine Gun Preacher as a “must see” starting September 30th. It did. “Staring Gerard Butler” (said properly by the way). :o) And they don’t mess around either. I rarely hear films mentioned! So this is a BIG deal. (yay)
    -
    This, of course, is that certain crowd I mentioned before that would go see something like this. And they’ve deep pockets. They’re wise and worldly too. The well-traveled crowd.
    -
    I think this was cool so mentioned it.

    who knows November is THE month for the best films to come out thinking they might need time to make more for distribution! la-La-LA

  • Sarard

    @ha ha: My posts about SC’s tweets and her YT links were deleted from the last thread. Whats with that?

  • GerrysFascinatingWoman

    Really think Gerry is under a lot of pressure right now work-wise, movie-wise… and thank God not personal-wise too taking care of that mess earlier!! F.E.A.R. He is fine, content and living very well. He likes beige. LOL
    -
    Really, this is his comeback role of sorts. If it isn’t given a proper shot he’s got nothing in theaters since last spring. But his reputation is alive and well.
    -
    I sense this movie means a lot to Gerry. More than most. He wants it seen. He wants HIM seen. He’s doing everything in his power. He’s flying to London for the UK premiere. He takes it all so personally.
    -
    Need to work on solutions and let this film be handled by those who are in control. Think the solution is Coriolanus.
    -
    That and any roll backs to November bring it in closer to swimming with the big roll out films. I have faith. Good is good regardless of topic.
    ~K

  • question

    What “roll back in November”? Care to explain a little ? Thanks.

  • ha ha

    @question:

    IMDB lists release date Nov 18

  • GerrysFascinatingWoman

    Rollback, sorry for the typo. Read that here (about the rollback) as ha ha as provided. Very little on IMDb or the net/web is entirely accurate. All I know is it’s opening on schedule here (Sept. 30th). I’m looking forward to something different from Gerry. It’s time. Like he said, he feels he’s gotten better at acting. This movie, topic pleasing to many or not, should reflect that. I saw Life, Above All and see these types of films anyways.
    -
    Traditionally the ‘better’ films geared toward supreme talent open late in the year–thus the compliment! It’s just too bad Coriolanus isn’t.
    ~K

  • N.

    There has been a cut back on showing locations for the Sep 30 release. Shame. Check your local theaters before you head out.

    Many fans will be very disappointed becasue they won’t get to see the movie in theaters except very few. DVD is the only way to go for many.

  • Manny

    @question:
    .
    It is a ROLLOUT as in planned distribution/timeline.
    .
    Obviously GFW is a Walmart shopper. Rollback is what prices do at Walmart.
    ==============
    .
    @ha ha:
    .
    I agree with you. George Clooney is a playboy just like Gerry but when I think of Clooney I think of respectable career (and yes I know he has his bombs), concerned humanitarian (Darfur), emotionally and intellectually mature in general. I don’t think the general public thinks the same things about Butler.
    .
    I realize Butler is on a good start to making his career more respectable as to content and talent, and he does have a broad, if not always applaudable, scope of work. They are both single and living the life yet Butler is the media manwh*re.
    .
    Is the difference that Clooney has not allowed himself to be p!mped or cheapened by other celebrities in the tabs like the Aniston thing? I mean Clooney lives quite the life of parties, clubs, fun in the sun, etc. yet he doesn’t seem to be perceived as a club rat like Butler.
    .
    I guess I’m in a contemplative mood this morning.
    .
    Curious as to what you all think.
    .
    GFW please don’t respond. Not interested in your point of view.

  • GerrysFascinatingWoman

    Fact. I don’t go near Walmart. :P Don’t like huge warehouse-type stores. Target? Yeah. They’re all inclusive here (groceries too) and lovely to shop in. Bright, cherry, understated.
    ————————————-
    I sympathize with his pains right now. He feels a lot of stress in different areas of his life right now.
    -
    Success for some is a threat. Gerry needs to be calm right now. Remain humble. Be at peace he did his best. Redirect his energies, especially any negative ones. Negative thoughts are a symptom. Don’t agree with negative views or the reviews either. Take them with a grain of salt.
    -
    He bit off a big bite with this movie. Now he has to deal with that. I can’t wait to see it.
    -
    He knows it’s a tough pill to swallow. But if it offers hope, brings people in for a closer look, however many their are, that’s all that matters! All it needs to do is effect and affect one. And that one, the most important one, was him.

    @GerrysFascinatingWoman: No point in talking to that troll above; release was in only four theaters, big cities so far, and has done reasonably well in all four. This weekend going wider; I will be seeing it Saturday. Expanding wider the next two weeks.

    Audiences on Rotten give it 80%, on Yahoo Movies, only a few audience members have rated it so far, but give it an A. There will be more info after wider release. G is giving it his all in PR,must be exhausting trying to find something new to say.

  • movie reviews

    @movie reviews: approx another 25 theaters across the country this weekend, then 40 the following weekend, then more the weekend after that. Hitting a lot of mid western towns, etc.

    They are keeping Butler and MGP in the entertainment news constantly. Interesting marketing.

  • N.

    Was scheduled to show MGP at two locations in my town when it was first anounced but now only at one location. :{

  • GerrysFascinatingWoman

    ooOOoo I’m so lucky to be near one of the 25! (goalie arms) I’ve three readers who’ve see it so discussions are lively there as well. But no pot shots at him personally.
    -
    One reader liked it but didn’t love it (saw it at TIFF). Had issues with Sam in a couple scenes. I’m like, that’s good! If you didn’t like him, were you supposed to? No.
    -
    Gerry’s done exceptionally well in this. Nod or nomination really isn’t on his agenda. It was to bring out his heart. He wasn’t afraid to become unhinged. Like he says, it’s months of his life. People are sitting up straight and taking notice!

  • GerrysFascinatingWoman

    What do you mean changed? Rolling out dates? No worries. I’m likin’ Playing the Field for spring; Mavericks for autumn.
    -
    Think it wise Playing the Field is geared toward one audience sector, while Mavericks is another. Wise be Gerry. Never underestimate him. He’s sharper than a Swiss Army knife straight from its box.

    I thought it was funny too. Why would a movie rollback? Oh we have had great success in four theaters, let’s rollback to three??? Kind of a common sense thing…
    .
    =========================
    .
    So no one has any ideas or insight to why Clooney who has a similar lifestyle to Butler is considered a media manwhore? I’m curious what you peeps think…. EXCEPT GFW. She’s a spamming away today. Just do what I do… neg and skip. :)

    @Manny:

    The only thing I can think of is that GC puts his (usually 2 year) relationships out for public consumption. Of course there are rumours of GC’s kinky ways and the gay rumours, etc., but from what I have read, there seems to be constant tweets (could be lies of course), pics and the like from women & girls saying how GB hit on them, they had a one-nighter with him and so on. There just seems to be a lot more “strange” in GB’s life. Just my take on it.

  • 8-)
  • GerrysFascinatingWoman

    Somber, serious and selected indeed.
    -
    Gerry’s an Indie guy now. He mitght as well face it. It’s a good thing.

    This isn’t a big-budget roll-out banners everywhere with Internet buzz like 300.
    -
    No, this is serious stuff he’s tackled presenting a quality piece of work (pre-saying this unseen because I know Gerry’s abilities when taxed) and he needs to realize and relax, not only is it a tough ride, it might be a tough sell. But 10 theaters now with 25 this weekend and who knows how many later. But to EXPECT this to be a hit or huge success isn’t fair or realistic. Not on him to carry the weight alone, or for the film for him to carry that burden alone.
    ~K

    @Lisa S.:
    .
    Good point. I wasn’t shocked when Stern went after his public personna, but Leno shocked me. I mean we can be catty here on a gossip site about his “wh*ring” but it is different when you are in front of millions of viewers and saying that stuff.

  • GerrysFascinatingWoman

    It’s a movie that will change his career. A career changing film! Critical acclaim is better than money!
    -
    Hollywood is changing its guard. Gerry is gaining respect in the business. On the Academy, which is a big deal. Selected! He’s a voice.
    -
    Machine Gun Preacher is a movie of substance. A movie for the sake of the art of film-making.
    -
    Grown and sexy.
    ~K

  • N.

    @movie reviews: Large city. The only theater featuring MGP is one known for showing limited releases, artsy or foreign films, not your neighborhood megaplexes where widely released films get even wider exposures because of foot traffic.

    About Clooney, 1, he has very good PR team 2, he is a very smooth talker, a media savvy likable person. It’s hard to hate on Clooney. Jmo.

  • justsayin’too

    Manny- My take on it is like Lisa S. GC is always considered monogamous when he is in his relationships and is not afraid to be photographed periodically. It gives him more credibility than GB because he states up front he is not getting married or having kids, but he doesn’t sleep around on them so he does commit even if for only two years. However, he may or may not be faithful, but this is the image he projects and the public buys it. GB is considered a callous man sluut that has no problem with one night stands and has never shown he can commit in any kind of relationship. This may or may not be true, but it is the image the public buys, hence the Leno STD joke. It’s a shame he doesn’t take control of this image and rework it to his favor so that he can get the credibility like Clooney.
