Zachary Quinto Comes Out

Zachary Quinto has come out as a gay man to New York magazine.

The 34-year-old actor, who’s currently starring in a story arc on FX’s American Horror Story, spoke to the magazine about his eight month stint in Angels in America, saying, “as a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.”

ZQ also spoke about the current cultural bipolarity toward the gay community, from gaining acceptance for gay marriage to teens being bullied and committing suicide.

“And again, as a gay man I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say ‘Why? Where’s this disparity coming from, and why can’t we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?’ We’re terrified of facing ourselves,” Zachary said.

So happy that he’s officially out. He’s a great representative of the gay community.

  • zac

And? Should he get an award? Next.

  • Hayley

So happy for him! Not really shocking news but I’m extremely glad that he feels comfortable enough to be a out and proud. Good luck to him.

hmmmm… Here’s hoping we’re one step closer to the Chris Pine and Zachary relationship rumor becoming a reality.

  • Frozoid

This is all well and good, but New York magazine has had a very heavy emphasis on gay men stories ever since Adam Moss, who is publicly gay, became editor.

  • @6

    Your point?

  • sam

    Good for him.
I can’t imagine how much stress he was under trying to hide from the press.
Not that he will see this, but…..Wishing you much happiness Zac!

  • lola

Good for him !!! Fans all over Internet are very happy about this revelation. He made it in a very classy way, mentioning it passing-by like it’s no big deal (and it isn’t supposed to be a big deal)

  • Keilee

Not exactly shocking news but well done to him. Dont care who you are, coming out publically has gotta be terrifying and congratulations to him. And to Sean Maher who also came out lately. again, not exactly shocking but its gotta be a relief to them both to not have to hide who they are and what they want from life. takes alot of courage!

    more tornadoes,earthquakes and hurricanes,thanks.

Interesting. Glad he can be honest. Saw him in the west village yesterday, how funny.

  • shyfan

    Everyone knew this already..

I for one will celebrate the day when no one has to announce their sexual orientation. When it doesn’t matter. When it becomes Who cares.

I find it sad that he or anyone has to issue a statement. Or that people are in 2011 clapping and saying good for you. A lot of works has to be done. and not just with the non-supportive people but the ones that are supportive.

  • chel

so glad he finally was able to come out :)

  • Bob

@shyfan: How are we supposed to know who to be attracted to or flirt with if we that person doesn’t say their orientation? Do we just hit on everyone and hope they don’t lie to us? Or we just hope for the best I guess.

  • Kristen

He must have a new movie coming out as well.

  • shyfan

My point was the sad thing is he has to announce it to the world and the heading is Zachary Comes Out.

HOW DO YOU KNOW.. Hint: If someone likes you they flirt back, if they don’t show interest they are interested; and just because someone says something doesn’t make it true.

and any time you meet someone.. you are hoping for the best..

what’s with all these butthurt ppl giving thumbs down? >.>

  • Bob

Then I feel bad for the women who are married to closeted guys and believe their marriage is real. Or the children who don’t actually know their father is homosexual. I’m not trying to be mean here or start a fight. But anyways, congrats to Zachary for being brave and keeping his voice.

  • K

It still baffles me that ‘coming out’ should have to be such a big thing.

Being gay or straight doesn’t affect who you are as a person and everyone should understand that. It sucks that we live in a world where sexual orientation is even an issue. Gay, straight, bi who cares? If you’re a good person, I’ll like you, if you’re not. I won’t. It SHOULD be that simple. Nobody’s opinion should be swayed one way or another by discrimination of any kind.

In saying that, I understand even in this day and age, it takes courage to come out. Congratulations Zachary. I hope you manage to inspire others to do the same.

  • Clement

I guess nowadays it is really hard to be a closeted gay because of paparazzi, unless you decided to be lonely all your life. Good luck to him and hope he will still do well in his career.

  • Hayley

@Kristen, the next movie he has coming out is the Star Trek sequel (2012). He also has a part in “American Horror Story”. He’s been working in a lot of projects (tv, movies and theater) since 2002 and last time I check coming out didn’t exactly help promote projects if that’s what you’re trying to say.

  • rice

I can understand him. Me, myself, I thought I was lesbian. And even without being sure about it, it was embarrassing for me to face that because of what people may think about it. So now, I hope that everything goes fine with him.

  • mkhay

im not surprised but im happy he’s finally out and proud.

  • ta

In a perfect world this wouldn’t matter.
In a perfect world we will look at the person, not their orientation.
In a perfect world no one would be killed by bigots.
In a perfect world an actor would not potentially hurt his career by revealing his sexuality.
But this isn’t a perfect world.
His ‘bravery’ for coming out should be praised.

  • yeah

@ta: In a perfect world this wouldn’t exist period. If eve didn’t eat that damn fruit because the devil told her. This is the same modern day problem, the devil tells you to give in and voila the world falls apart more and more everyday because of us sinners.

  • ted

Good but if we are going to praise the Gay community then why do I come here and always see women getting called ugly trannies or ugly man faces? Ultimately that is bashing the gay community because its used in such a negative connotation. I think Jared should not allow it if he won’t allow anti gay remarks, that is 100% anti gay.lesbian.trasngender bashing. so please fix this and no longer allow it. Thanks.

  • foxym

    Well, there’s something we didn’t know…. *eyeroll*

  • Oprah

I’m glad Quinto is happy with who he is enough to come out, that’s very brave for anyone to do.

  • ozzie

gay youth in this country need hollywood to come out of the closet … they have almost NO decent roll models outside of ellen d. and chris colfer. If they knew how much of hollywood is in the closet they wouldn’t feel so alone. everyone on the inside of hollywood know who these people are but its an unwritten rule to keep it to yourself. hiding behind your publicists and closed doors doesn’t help the community and says clearly “if your are gay you should be ashamed and hiding.” … cowards.

  • Okay?

People are surprised by this? No matter what anyone says, you can ALWAYS tell when a guy is gay and you CANNOT hide it.

  • Deb

Good for him and about time.

  • Kirsten

Bravo. So happy for him. :)

  • uhuh

omg burn in hell!!! i dont understand this its against the nature!!!!

  • SmackDatB

I think it is great he came out and recognized who he really is completely to the world. He no longer will have to be seen “hanging out” with women just to appear to be something he isn’t like he use to just a few years ago. Freeing yourself is the best gift one can ever give themselves and he just did that. I think he will continue to be able to get work in Hollywood. Neil Patrick Harris’ career actually got even better and bigger again after he came out of the closet more power to them both. There is a trend for sure being seen of more actors coming out of the closet. In a few more years time I imagine there will be more actors out of the closet than in as it becomes harder to hide it in the internet age and as peoples tolerance from other humans beings basic rights to exist grows. It may take time but it will happen. Congrats Zach!!!!! Your free. More power to him.

  • Whatever

I’d like all the people here who slammed me for telling you all he was gay ONE YEAR AGO to apologize. People said I was lying, I didn’t know, etc… Well guess what? HE’S GAY people!!!!

  • cari

Yes, you can hide it. You’d be surprised by how many actors, actresses, sports figures, singers etc. are gay. Some of the so called experts feel that 50 to 75 percent of actors/actresses are gay. And if you work in sports, you soon learn that there are many sports figures that are gay. Same goes for music. And politics. What is the real shame is that these individuals feel they have to hide their sexual orientation or they will lose fans, their jobs, and the respect of their peers. Because there are a lot of people out there like “Yeah” number 30 (in these posts) who feel they have the right to pass judgment, condemn and more.
So kudos to Quinto and hugs to those who feel trapped by circumstances. Hopefully some day it won’t matter and one will be judged on their own merits rather than their sexual orientation. Mmmm–kind of like the Star Trek philosophy!

  • Girl.

NOO. Now I can never have him. :(

  • lafamepoma

Ok, i think that homosexual people don’t have to say that they are; is like heterosexual people don’t say: I’m straight. The problem with society is that there are a lot of prejudices against them, so we have to fight against these problems, everybody needs to be happy.
