Angelina Jolie: 'In the Land of Blood & Honey' Trailer!

Check out the trailer for Angelina Jolie‘s directorial debut, In the Land of Blood & Honey!

“It’s a heavy film,” the 36-year-old actress, who also wrote the drama, previously told EW.

The movie centers around a young Serbian man (played by Goran Kostic) and a Bosnian-Muslim woman (Zana Marjanovic) who fall in love before the Bosnian War of 1992 pulls them apart.

Angelina cast local actors and scenes were shot simultaneously in English and the Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian language known as BHS. The English version is set to be released in the United States December 23!

Well, it looks like the Oscar race just got a major shakeup. Though it was slated for a release date in December way back in the spring, Angelina Jolie‘s upcoming directorial debut “In The Land Of Blood And Honey” has been a completely unknown element. With no festival appearances, and a lack of stills and promotional material, it was left up to speculation if the film was a misguided vanity project, a true awards season contender or something else entirely. Well, a very meaty trailer has now landed online and Jolie looks to have delivered something that could change up the game this fall.

The film, which has already courted controversy, stars Zana Marjanović (”Snow”), Rade Šerbedžija (”Snatch”) and Goran Kostic (”Taken”) in a romantic drama about the troubled relationship between a Muslim woman and a Serbian man in the midst of the Bosnian war. The spot shows that Jolie isn’t shying away from the grittier elements of the war, and the love story plays out against that backdrop with the leads questioning their own emotional motivations and trust. “The film is specific to the Bosnian War, but it’s also universal,” Jolie said earlier this year. “I wanted to tell a story of how human relationships and behavior are deeply affected by living inside a war.”

All in all, it looks quite handsomely put together, and displays a very strong directorial hand, with some good performances to boot so consider us very pleasantly surprised. FilmDistrict will release the film into theaters on December 23rd. Watch below.

First Trailer for Angelina Jolie’s Directorial Debut ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’

The film chronicles the romance between a Bosnian couple, Danijel and Lejla, who find themselves separated by war, only to be brought back together when Lejla is taken prisoner and incarcerated at Danijel’s POW camp. Heavy stuff, and a look into an aspect of modern history that often goes overshadowed by most. The trailer looks especially stark, not taking reservations in its depiction of violence or emotional outbursts.

Here’s hoping for the former, as the trailer certainly appears to deliver. Jolie’s already broken out as one of the few female stars who can successfully dabble in both serious drama and high octane action—

Angelina Jolie’s In The Land Of Blood And Honey Gets An Impressive Trailer

But taking one look at the trailer, its elegant photography and sense of tone, seems to indicate this is much more than a sensationalistic romance with guns going off in the background. At first look, at least, Jolie seems to be really immersing herself in recreating this enormous, destructive ethnic conflict.

    Actors Who Direct

Find out which actors have added “Director” to their resumes.

    Angelina Jolie
She’s an actress, mother, UN Ambassador and a world-wide sex symbol. Well, now Angelina Jolie can add director to her lost list of accomplishments. In the Land of Blood and Honey had the actress directing in both English and the language of the former Yugoslavia. “We actually shot a full version in their native language and we shot a full version in English,” Jolie told a Hungarian news outlet.

Looks fantastic. Crazy that there’s Oscar buzz for her first feature film. I’ll be happy if it just gets solid reviews though. So proud of her.

    It looks good, but sad.

  • @ bdj #13

Add a writer to the list since she (also) wrote the story in the first place.

Yes Angelina Jolie wrote and directed ITLOBAH. Angelina is a also a dedicated humanitarian, Mom and Partner. She walks the talk. It is all good.

  • Lynn

Before you thumbs down, this is not anything personal towards Jolie, as I don’t know the woman, but this movie looks unrealistic and I can really understand how women who lived through the reality would be insulted. It was a prison camp and even if they knew each other prior, any woman worth a grain of salt would have ended it real quick knowing the man was part of the group holding her against her will. This is only the trailer but if she continues to be with him through all the horror that his people do towards her people, and after he was holding a gun with just them two in the room, that is pathetic.

  • very cool

    @Katarzyna Nowakowski:

Perhaps you should go back to school to learn how to read and comprehend.
    a) the film already has a release date so it isn’t going straight to DVD
    b) it is an Indie which means it is not expected to bring in hundreds of millions of dollars
    c) Jolie cast locally in Bosnia/Serbia so unless you are a person who likes foreign films you aren’t likely to have heard of the actors. It is a solid cast.

  • neer

The first time I saw the trailer, I was just speechless.
For the trailer alone, one can really see that it’s NOT made out for vanity project. The subject is difficult but it will surely give its viewers the opportunity to think.
I am proud to be a fan of a very talented lady.

  • QQQQ

The hens never let up, do they… this is what the movie is about.
This love story begins in 1992 in a small city in the eastern part of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Lejla and Danijel are a young couple in love, who get separated at the beginning of war activities. Danijel’s father is a stern high ranking officer of the Yugoslav Peoples Army and appoints his son to the post of commander of a POW camp. Danijel’s moral principles don’t allow him to accept this position, but he unwillingly yields under his fathers pressure.
By the stroke of destiny he meets Lejla again, but this time he is the camp commander and she is a prisoner there. Their relationship reaches a completely new dimension. Danijel is in an unenviable situation and tries to find the best solution, acceptable for all. The question is whether such a solution even exists.

im such a loony ive watched the trailer literally 5, im so freaking proud of Angie..i love the music and everything about the trailer..

No matter what she does, it is amazing. She is a Renaissance woman for the new millenium. At a time when women (in HW) have seemed to backtracked in their behavior, becoming, once again “sex-ploited” objects, she shows that true talent rises above categorization. Amazing, amazing Angelina.

Have you seen the movie yet? Have you read the screenplay?
Sorry but I will never agree with your opinions. Also, you sound like a crazy fool who continues to admire a self-centered, pathological liar Cougar Sugar Mommy ANUSton who looks like an old transvestite horse.

  • Me

Apparantly this site is ran and monitored by a jolie fan. The only opinions that stay are ones that praise Jolie. Maybe because half of you sound like PR people. Any thumbs down I just did marked as a thumbs up, which is just showing there is a reason ALL the remarks showing are in favor of Jolie. A comment section is supposed to be for everyone, not just people who like her. Very dishonest. I’ve noticed it before on this site.

I understand where you are coming from, but there are true stories and examples of this theme with the Nazis and women who loved them, but had a different race/nationality. I don’t know where you are from, but I am Serbian and even now there is a lot of hatred and tension between certain Serbs and Croats etc, but they do fall in love and rise above the hatred. I think that is what this film is about. A love struggling to rise above the hatred and prejudices of a war torn “Yugoslavia” –the Bosnians, Croats, Serbs, Muslims. I think Jolie given her volunteer work is trying to present a story that shows the futility of hatred and war and the effects of love – good or bad.

    Sultan Al Darmaki’s beautiful inspirations
    Emily Shardlow
    Oct 20, 2011
Less than a year into his career, SULTAN AL DARMAKI became the first contemporary Middle Eastern designer to have his work picked up by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London when a pair of his shoes – the golden Lydia stiletto – was chosen to represent contemporary Middle Eastern fashion in the museum’s permanent collection.
By his own admission, Sultan Al Darmaki, the creative force behind the couture footwear brand Darmaki, is rather taken with Angelina Jolie. “What I love about her is that she’s a rebel in her own way,” he explains. “The way she dresses on the red carpet is simple and elegant, but at the same time very striking – she still manages to capture attention.”
