Kirsten Dunst: Depression Is a Very Personal Thing

Kirsten Dunst makes an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in an episode airing today!

Here’s what the 29-year-old Melancholia actress had to share with Ellen:

On taking a break from Hollywood: “I definitely took a little bit of a break. And also, when you’re in your twenties you need figure things out and take a step back. I had been acting so long, all my life. I think I just needed a little bit of some perspective. It was good for me and it re-inspired what I do.”

On dealing with depression: “It’s not something I feel like totally comfortable talking about but yeah, it’s a very personal thing. It’s also interesting as an actress you’re supposed to be sensitive and vulnerable and have this side to you. But then your supposed to be super sociable and ‘on’ and like nice to everybody. That’s a weird dichotomy. It’s a lot to ask of a person. It’s not a normal thing.”

On how she feels about the red carpet: “I avoid the red carpet as much as possible. You have to do it to promote your movies obviously but you won’t see me at an event just for the sake of it.”

FYI: Kirsten is wearing a Dolce&Gabbana dress, Nicholas Kirkwood shoes, and Tom Binns earrings.

    She looks naturally and she is great in Melancholia / and the other actors too/. I like her because she isn´t typical hollywood star with fake face.

    Well, for someone avoiding red carpets at all costs, you’ve been awful good in them lately. Some terrific outfits and a very lean figure! Way to go!

    @julie:

    Did you just not read what she said? She does red carpets to promote her films. The one she has out now is Melancholia. Hence, that’s part of her promotional duties. Learn to read.

    @Wow: I think Julie’s point was that, even though she’s not on the red carpet much (and therefore not one of those people who’s there for attention), she STILL looks damn good. She understands that she has to promote her films. :)

    She looks great. I’m so happy to see that she’s openly discussing depression and the need for people to take a step back and just breath for a bit. Too many people both famous and not, shy away from the thought that they may be depressed because they don’t want to be labeled as such, but it’s crucial to talk about it and deal with or it’ll just keep popping up in life as you go along.

    Thank you Kirsten for bringing up this important topic! Best of luck to you in all you do.
