Billy Crystal Steps in to Host Oscars 2012

Billy Crystal is replacing Eddie Murphy as host of the 2012 Academy Awards.

“Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show,” the 63-year-old comedian tweeted on Thursday (November 10) – just one day after Eddie pulled out of the award show following Brett Ratner‘s resignation as producer.

The Academy officially confirmed the news, saying they’re “thrilled” to welcome Billy back to the Oscars stage. This will be Billy‘s ninth time hosting the Oscars.

Stepping in as producer is Brian Grazer, who has earned four Academy Award nominations and won for Best Picture in 2001 for A Beautiful Mind.

They should select one or two comedians to host such as Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg, Eddie Izzard, Rowan Atkinson, Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, Jeremy Piven, Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, William Shatner, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Tim Allen, Chevy Chase, John Goodman, Billy Connolly, Danny DeVito, Robin Williams, George Lopez, John Cleese or Steve Coogan.

Yea…as much as I like Billy Crystal there needs to be some fresh blood hosting the Oscars. I like the idea of Robert Downey Jr hosting.

    Awards have become meaningless.
So called “Oscar Worthy” roles are given to a handful of political activists masquerading as “Actors.

YES YES YES!! He’s hosted the Academy Awards 1990–1993, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2004. I can remember his 2004 opening (check it out below), it was hilarious. He’s done such a brilliant job over the years!
If this is true, I will so be looking forward to this up and coming Oscar awards ceremony.

    Tula Says:

It will be his 9th time hosting the event and I would like to see him co-hosting this time with another comedian to bounce off each other. He barely does any movies anymore so that would make it more interesting.
It could also be him passing the baton to a younger comedian and set up a new comedian host who can return and who is a Billy Crystal level player.

    Rob Says:

@total farse: Then don’t watch them. Because at the end of the day there will be 40 or so million tuning in to watch no matter how meaningless or boring they are. Give me an example of “political activists masquerading” for Awards… I mean if you think you’re better qualified to give awards out to film makers than actual film makers that’s cool..

I take that back the 70th Academy Awards were the best. His monologue was a classic.
