Billy Crystal Steps in to Host Oscars 2012

Billy Crystal is replacing Eddie Murphy as host of the 2012 Academy Awards.

“Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show,” the 63-year-old comedian tweeted on Thursday (November 10) – just one day after Eddie pulled out of the award show following Brett Ratner‘s resignation as producer.

The Academy officially confirmed the news, saying they’re “thrilled” to welcome Billy back to the Oscars stage. This will be Billy‘s ninth time hosting the Oscars.

Stepping in as producer is Brian Grazer, who has earned four Academy Award nominations and won for Best Picture in 2001 for A Beautiful Mind.

They should select one or two comedians to host such as Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg, Eddie Izzard, Rowan Atkinson, Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, Jeremy Piven, Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, William Shatner, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Tim Allen, Chevy Chase, John Goodman, Billy Connolly, Danny DeVito, Robin Williams, George Lopez, John Cleese or Steve Coogan.

Yes he is Showbiz Tonight Confirmed it and it should be good

  • Nicole

Ahh after last year’s fiasco, go with the safe horse who will do well! Doubt Eddie Murphy was every *really* going to do it. Gotta create drama to have some marketing/PR

  • Ann

Yea…as much as I like Billy Crystal there needs to be some fresh blood hosting the Oscars. I like the idea of Robert Downey Jr hosting.

  • l0nely-girl

    YESSSSSS! :D

  • JL

    Billy’s a good choice.

  • Boo

    Good choice.

    Awards have become meaningless.
So called “Oscar Worthy” roles are given to a handful of political activists masquerading as “Actors.

  • Lara

YES YES YES!! He’s hosted the Academy Awards 1990–1993, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2004. I can remember his 2004 opening (check it out below), it was hilarious. He’s done such a brilliant job over the years!
If this is true, I will so be looking forward to this up and coming Oscar awards ceremony.

  • OK

TBH, I was hoping those rumors of The Muppets hosting to come true.

  • Sharon

Well now I am looking forward to watching the Oscars. Welcome back Billy!! I can’t wait to watch!

  • Bella

Best decision this year! Wohoo, so i will watch it at 1 am here in europe.

  • Tula

It will be his 9th time hosting the event and I would like to see him co-hosting this time with another comedian to bounce off each other. He barely does any movies anymore so that would make it more interesting.
It could also be him passing the baton to a younger comedian and set up a new comedian host who can return and who is a Billy Crystal level player.

  • Bella

Wooohoo best decision ! I am looking forward to watching it during the night here in europe. Same procedure as every year, Billy.

  • venenosa

WTF? I wanted the Muppets to host.

  • Lara

total fa@total farse: You definitely right. It has seemed to be a cheep.

  • Rob

@total farse: Then don’t watch them. Because at the end of the day there will be 40 or so million tuning in to watch no matter how meaningless or boring they are. Give me an example of “political activists masquerading” for Awards… I mean if you think you’re better qualified to give awards out to film makers than actual film makers that’s cool..

  • Lara

I take that back the 70th Academy Awards were the best. His monologue was a classic.

I would have definitely watched if Eddie Murphy was presenting ! ..now I don’t know yet… Maybe I’ll just read about it the next day. Unless, the promo’s are awesome. I loved the promo’s from the last one.

  • janiece

Ricky Gervais should host it. The rating would be up if he did. Although some may think he’s too mean or insensitive, his humor would be a refreshing change in my opinion.

  • YAYA

I think people are too hard on Oscar host. It’s about the awards not so much the host. I think Billy can pull it off again. I would have liked to see Neil Patrick Harris..cause I think he should host all award shows LOL.

  • mkhay

    boring.
am i the only one who thinks he’s not funny.

  • Madhatter

Ha, I love him! I may have to rewatch The Princess Bride + When Harry Met Sally in celebration :)

  • madmax

I was thinking of two people who I wanted to see host, Billy Crystal was one (YES! I am so glad he’s going to do it)

and Ellen D was the other (I loved when she hosted. she cracked me up when she vacuumed the carpet)

  • YES!!!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Its about time!

  • Ronda

Yeah! I was hoping they’d choose Billy. IMO one of the best that’s ever done it;)
