Daniel Craig: New 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' Stills with Rooney Mara!

Check out Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in these new stills from the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, out December 21. Here’s what director David Fincher had to share with USA Today:

On casting Rooney Mara: “I wasn’t looking for someone who kicks ass. I was looking for someone who could project the kind of mystery of someone who is that damaged.”

On casting Daniel Craig: “He reminds me of Brad [Pitt] or Mark Ruffalo. They’re the kind of actors who will do eight or nine takes until the muscle memory kicks in. They make themselves totally available.”

On Rooney and Daniel’s chemistry: “You know how you get up in the morning to make your coffee and you’ll see your cats, kind of curled and natural? That was them. They were amazing colleagues.”

On casting Robin Wright as Erika Berger: “Actually, she wasn’t first on our list because we didn’t think we could get her. We wanted someone archetypically like her, but I felt the same way about Morgan Freeman for Seven. I figured he’d never do it, he’d just laugh at me.”

On his reputation for violent movies: “I have a much more colorful and sordid reputation as a purveyor of violence than I deserve. I just use it as a device for storytelling. (Tattoo) is an R-rated movie, but we didn’t get gynecological with the violence. I think we were as tasteful as you can be with a subject matter like that.”

    CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bissgirl

Love Daniel Craig. Think this movie will be great. Cant wait to see it!

  • Lola

I’m sure this movie will be a new half phenomenon and Rooney will get a (probably deserved) Oscar for it but it’s less than three years since the original movies came out… Hollywood, seriously. It’s also sad that neither of them stay true to the author of the book series’ vision and ideas.

  • Cas

I saw the original and this version looks like it’ll be good too.

  • asdaf

@Lola: I agree for the most part. It is unfortunate it’s only two years after the first version. But I’m still excited, as I have a feeling I’ll like this version more. And I personally think staying true to the intentions of the book’s author is not all that important. Movies have different “authors” than the books they’re based on. The books are always there if you want Larsson’s POV.

  • ha ha

cant wait, read all three books! i already pictured rooney and daniel craig as I read them

  • Cas

This site is a nightmare to try and post on today. Error messages constantly.

  • Lola

@asdffd, It is just a personal opinion of mine that if you do a movie adaptation of a book you should stay true to the book’s message and premise — I’m not trying to favour the original Swedish versions, because they didn’t do so either. Basically the jist of what I am opposed against is that the movies focus on and herald Lisbeth as this power-action-woman and make that the center of the story, when it was supposed to be about society and news, etc. That’s what I think is sad.

  • omg

I can’t wait! This version looks amazing! Well… it’s Fincher we are talking about, so amazing is the least you can expect.

  • KAKA

Can’t wait to see this! However, those stills aren’t “new”.

  • Mike

This is not a story of the ’personal’ revenge of Lisbeth. The matter of social evil and political corruption, the sexism were ignored. Mikael Blomkvist brings up these as a public problem, not a personal problem of Lisbeth, before the general public in the book. Michael Nyqvist is a good actor, but he was wasted in the movies. He was described as an ordinary and flat man in the Swedish versions. He must be the so called clearheaded storyteller. Shame. I hope Fincher has not made the same mistake.

  • lala

Why did Salander sleep with Blomkvist ONLY once on the Swedish one? After that, she even turned down him. That’s not faithful to the original!! They had sex many times, and Lisbeth induced even to have sex.

  • Mike

Mikael Blomkvist is a successful womanizer. He has his own rule and sometimes refuses a woman, but he basically does not chase one who leaves, does not reject one who comes. Blomkvist in the Swedish versions was not womanizer. He did not sleep with Cecilia, Harriet, Monica. Blomkvist was just portrayed as a drab man in the Swedish versions. I think Michael Nyqvist can perform a womanizer well, but Daniel Craig is better fit. There’s no place for doubt.

  • Amy

Fincher invited Daniel to join his new movie to him, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo. However, Daniel declined the offer. Okay, Daniel. I know he works excessively hard. lol

  • DD

I can’t stop thinking he looks like her father. Is his character in the book that much older than Lisbeth?

  • to DD

Lisbeth Salander is 24 years old.
Mikael Blomkvist is 42 years old.

Daniel Covers The January 2012 issue of British GQ
He plays one of the most iconic and identifiable characters in cinema but off screen he remains an enigma. In GQ’s extraordinary interview Daniel Craig, the spy who refuses to come in from the cold, reveals why he won’t play the fame game, his unique take on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and the extremes he has gone to in order to find the ultimate Bond.

Interview: Mark Strong on Becoming a Sultan
You starred alongside Daniel Craig in the early days in TV and later in film, and you’re both big-screen stars now. While you’ve maintained a relatively normal life, he’s hounded by the press and seems to hate it – why do you think some stars attract that sort of attention while others, like yourself, don’t suffer media scrutiny?
I’m very lucky. I still move around London on the tube, so my life hasn’t changed at all, except people might come up and say, “I like you in such-and-such”. Daniel is a very private person and values his privacy very much. But Bond is an iconic franchise. When he took that role on there was an enormous amount of interest in him, and that generally makes people want to hide, unless you are a naturally gregarious, very social sort of person. You’re first instinct is, “Oh my God, how do I deal with all of this.”

Daniel Craig – Daniel Craig Wanted To Protect His Marriage
Daniel Craig wanted to keep his wedding to Rachel Weisz a secret because he was worried it would be ruined if he made it public knowledge.

Daniel Craig didn’t want his wedding to Rachel Weisz to become “f***ed up” by making it public.

The ‘James Bond’ actor – who tied the knot with the actress at a private New York ceremony in June with only four guests present – admitted the couple wanted to formalise their union for “private reasons” and didn’t feel the need to share it with anyone else.

He said: “We got away with it. We did it privately. And we’ve got a lot of people to thank for that. But that was the point. We did it for private reasons. Because we didn’t want it f***ed up, because that would be sharing a secret.

“And the whole point is that it was a secret. A secret is a secret in my mind.”

The 43-year-old star – who met Rachel on the set of ‘Dream House’ late last year – explained married life is so far “very happy” and he is hoping to be in the relationship for the “long run”.

In an interview with the UK edition of GQ magazine, Daniel added: “I’m in love, I’m very happy. And that is as far as I’m prepared to go. Life is long, life goes wrong and I don’t want to say something now that might be thrown back later.

“Ultimately, people are saying, ‘Give it six months.’ Well guess what? I’m not responding. Life is long and I am hopefully in this for the long run.”

‘Dragon Tattoo’ finally screens: Awards await, but ‘Not a game-changer’

Finally, critics have started to screen “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” — one of two films, along with “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” that awards pundits have been waiting to ingest before getting definitive in their Oscar predictions.

Sony first showed its remake to the New York Film Critics Circle on Monday afternoon in Manhattan, about three weeks before its Dec. 21 release, under a strict embargo. And while the verdict is still very much out, several people who attended tell Variety that David Fincher’s adaptation of the first installment in the Stieg Larsson franchise should contend for several kudos, but won’t significantly disrupt what’s still an unfocused Oscar race.

“I thought it was a well-made film, certainly flashier than the Swedish version,” one viewer told Variety. “But I don’t see it as being a game-changer.”

Another attendee suggested that the R-rated thriller’s long-range awards prospects are “huge … especially considering what else is out there. Nothing’s coalescing around any one movie.”

The studio hasn’t yet skedded additional critics’ screenings and was keeping mum Tuesday about when reviews or social media opinions would be allowed. Of the NYFCC’s 33 members, 27 attended the Monday screening. At least 10 have active Twitter accounts; each was sticking to the rules as of Monday evening.

“Just left super-locked-down screening of ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.’ I’d tell you about it, but studio would sic Lisbeth on me,” tweeted The Star-Ledger/Newhouse newspapers’ Stephen Whitty.

Lou Lumenick, chief critic for the New York Post, posted to his blog early Monday: “I’m heading off shortly to see David Fincher’s ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.’ Hope it was really worth the New York Film Critics Circle postponing the vote on its annual awards for a day, until tomorrow. I don’t know when I’ll be allowed to share my thoughts about this one … .”

It’s true that the NYFCC — which moved up its vote this year to ensure it would be the first org to weigh in — delayed its selection by a day to squeeze in “Dragon Tattoo.” NYFCC will poll its members Tuesday, with an announcement of results expected by evening.

Fincher’s adaptation is “much more faithful to the book (than the Swedish version),” another person said. “It should have enough of a push between being very arty and very smart … it really does hit that sweet intersection between artiness and commercial appeal.”

As to whether the film’s violence might be a turn-off for Academy voters, bear in mind their history of crowning bloody and disturbing material like “The Silence of the Lambs,” “The Departed,” “Gladiator,” “No Country for Old Men,” and “Unforgiven,” among several others.

“(The brutality) is much more subdued in this film (than the Swedish version),” one person said. “But it still has a lot of impact.”

And so the extremely early, incredibly limited consensus seems to be: “Dragon Tattoo” is a serious player, but it’s not going to bulldoze its way to awards glory right out of the gate, leaving the Oscar race suspense to build — for now.

With “Dragon Tattoo” now in the mix, Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” which opens Dec. 25, is the only major contender that hasn’t screened yet (Warner Bros. is expected to set dates by the end of the week).

One person who doesn’t seem to be counting on Oscars is Fincher himself.

“There’s too much anal rape in this movie” to get nominated, Fincher half-jokingly told Entertainment Weekly. “I think we’re very safe.”

His words are so suggestive… Hmm, two or three really good hooks?

Daniel Craig determined for ‘perfect’ Bond
(Cover) – EN Movies – Daniel Craig has vowed to make a ‘perfect’ Bond movie even if it ‘kills [him]‘.

The British actor will make his third outing as the suave spy in the new movie Skyfall. He previously played James Bond in Casino Royal and Quantum of Solace.

Daniel is confident he can improve on the first two movies and is excited about the new script.

‘There’s a perfect Bond movie out there. And I’m going to find it if it kills me. Which it might. I have to be that way about it. The script that we have at the moment ‘ and this is not just actor hyperbole ‘ I’m genuinely excited about it,’ he told the January issue of GQ magazine. ‘There’s a really good hook. In fact, we now have two or three really good hooks, two might work and that’s what you want. That’s what we had in Casino.’

In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is put the test when her past comes back to haunt her. Bond must track down and destroy an enemy when MI6 is attacked.

Daniel believes the latest 007 instalment ‘ which is being directed by Sam Mendes – can be a hit if the project stays faithful to the original idea.

‘But ultimately because it’s based on source material, the book had those hooks. We’ve got those in this script and as long as we hit those, the rest of it is hopefully going to come together,’ he added.

Skyfall is currently in production and will be released worldwide from October 2012.

I guess his new tattoos are linked to Rachel… Agh, she’s lucky!!

    Daniel Craig has ‘personal’ tattoos
Daniel Craig says his new tattoos are “part of a stage” he is in.

After spending years in the limelight the 43-year-old actor is keen to keep certain aspects of his life private.

Along with details about his recent marriage to actress Rachel Weisz, the hunk is content to keep the meaning behind his body art a secret too.

There a words inked on his right bicep and a mystery symbol on his left arm.

“There are mine. They are two very personal tattoos. Yes, they are [new]. They’re just part of a stage I’m in.

“You should see the rest of my body. Then you’d be intrigued. Oh boy. It’s been a very complicated couple of years,” he laughed to the January edition of GQ.

The actor is famous across the world for playing suave spy James Bond.

He is currently filming the new Bond film, Skyfall, and can soon be seen in the thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Although Daniel dreamed of becoming a movie star he never believed he actually would make it.

“I didn’t get into this business to become famous. Genuinely,” he explained. “You know what, at the back of my head, there was probably always an idea, ‘God, I’d love to be a movie star.’ But honestly, I came from Liverpool. I thought would be fat chance of that happening. I just wanted to be an actor and do my thing and this has happened.”

I really didn’t know who they are!! Their show is not broadcasted in my country (Probably it may be broadcasted with a pay channel). So I didn’t get what he meant, but I do get it now cuz I saw the video. It’s called the ‘Kim Kardashian’s naked yoga session’. lol

    Craig goes unrecognised on subway
Actor DANIEL CRAIG relishes his time spent in New York, because he’s barely recognised and gets to travel on the subway.
The James Bond star wed Rachel Weisz in Manhattan in June (11), and the pair is often snapped as they go about their day-to-day duties.

But Craig admits he’s rarely bothered when he’s by himself – and even enjoys rides on the subway without attention from the public.

He tells Men’s Journal magazine, “In New York, people are starring in their own movie. They have more important things to think about.”

Daniel Craig on ‘Quantum of Solace’: ‘We were stuffed’

The actor on his hopes for ‘Skyfall’ and ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’
Daniel Craig has spoken exclusively to Time Out about his upcoming role in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and his hopes for next year’s ‘Skyfall’, his third stab at playing James Bond, this time under the direction of British director Sam Mendes. The 43-year-old British actor has also expressed his frustration that the last Bond movie, ‘Quantum of Solace’, was not the rousing success it should have been.

Talking of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, which opens in cinemas this Christmas, Craig admits he’s confused by those critics who have interpreted Stieg Larsson’s novel as being sexist. The book – and the new film – tell of Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), a young Swedish woman and top-grade computer hacker who is repeatedly abused by men. She is joined by a disgraced journalist, Mikael Blomkvist (Craig), in the hunt for a serial killer of women.

‘I get a lot of questions from people saying, “Do you think the film is sexist?” But I don’t see it,’ Craig says. ‘With anything like this that becomes a phenomenon, people analyse it up its own arse: “Ah, I see it now! It’s sexist!” People point out to me that the original book was called “Men Who Hate Women”, and ask, “Do you see anything in the title?” It’s like, no: it’s about men who hate women isn’t it? Just because he’s writing about misogyny doesn’t mean he’s a misogynist, does it? I don’t see it.’

Craig is full of praise for his co-star, Mara (‘The Social Network’), who won the role of Salander after fierce competition from well-known actresses and other lesser known names. ‘There was a whole shenanigans going on while she was being cast, and David Fincher was adamant,’ Craig explains. ‘When she puts the hoodie on and the leather jacket, she looks like a 14-year-old boy, she looks sexless. Which is perfect.’

Talking of the film’s director, Craig identifies ‘The Social Network’ as a turning point in Fincher’s career – a sign of a new maturing of the already-celebrated director of ‘Fight Club’ and ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’. ‘You see someone who is getting as good as they can be,’ suggests Craig. ‘That is exciting. It’s unusual. A lot of directors have a big splash and then slide rapidly. It’s like he’s changed his attitude to filmmaking, and that’s a great thing as an artist to do… Great artist? F*cking hell! He should be paying me money for this!’

Turning his mind to Bond, Craig admits that ‘Quantum of Solace’ (2008) was a frustrating experience, not least because the Hollywood writers’ strike meant they ended up filming with an incomplete script. ‘We were f*cked,’ he says. ‘We had the bare bones of a script and then there was the strike and there was nothing we could do. We couldn’t employ a writer to finish it. There was me trying to rewrite scenes – and a writer I am not. We were stuffed.’

In contrast, Craig says he could not be happier with the script of ‘Skyfall’, which he is filming now with Mendes until the end of next May. ‘I’m genuinely really excited because we’ve got a script. I think this one is better than “Casino Royale”. I really do. It’s a totally original story. There’s a long thought process that’s gone into it. I read it and it just works as a story.’

Craig believes that the fact that both he and Mendes are British, roughly the same age and share the same memories of growing up with Bond, has greatly helped the planning and execution of ‘Skyfall’.

‘Early on, we sat down and we just rabbited for hours about “Live and Let Die” or “From Russia With Love”, and talked about little scenes that we knew from them. That’s how we started talking about it. That’s what we have tried to instil in the script.’

A full interview with Daniel Craig, in which he talks about ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, ‘Skyfall’ and more, will appear in the next issue of Time Out London, dated December 8-15 2011 and on shelves from Tuesday December 6 2011.

‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ opens on December 26 2011. ‘Skyfall’ opens on October 26 2012.

Daniel Craig Stunned By Mara’s Early Commitment To Character
Daniel Craig has revealed that he was impressed with Rooney Mara when he read with her for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Craig and Mara take over the roles of Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s interpretation of Stieg Larsson’s popular novel.

And Craig admits that he was stunned by how far Mara went into the character so early on in the process of the movie:

Speaking to Total Film the actor said: “I went to read with Rooney in Los Angeles, what feels like another lifetime ago, and I was incredibly impressed by how far she was into the character at that stage.

“I actually thought that’s who Rooney was, but thankfully it’s not.”
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo rounds off a busy autumn for Craig as he has already starred in Dream House and lent his voice to The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2011 and could well feature during the awards season.

And Craig will be returning as 007 and he is currently filming Skyfall, his third outing as James Bond – which will be directed by Sam Mendes.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is released 26th December.

Daniel Craig Calls Kardashians ‘F*cking Idiots,’ Talks ‘Dragon Tattoo’ And Reality TV In British GQ
Craig’s secrecy serves him well when it comes to his film career. He has had to keep his mouth shut about “Dragon Tattoo,” though he did rave to GQ about his co-star, Rooney Mara.

“Poor girl,” Craig sympathizes. “She’s not been allowed in the sunlight either, she’s borderline anaemic. But she’s incredibly sexy and incredibly beautiful underneath all that. That’s what you discover, and [director] David [Fincher] was absolutely adamant that was what we needed to do to discover her, both as a character and an actress. I think that was a great decision.”

Daniel Craig Does Not Like The Kardashians
I can certainly see where Craig is coming from and it actually made me stop and think about how other, higher up celebs may view the Kardashian Klan. There are some seriously talented actors and actresses in the entertainment industry, so it must be upsetting to see reality stars receive such an enormous amount of fame and fortune for doing absolutely nothing. It’s got to be at least a little demeaning, so I can certainly understand the resentment Craig has for them. Why is the world so obsessed with this family? It still remains a mystery to me, but one thing’s for certain — I’ve definitely developed a newfound respect for Mr. 007.

  • Fio

OMG! I rememberd her suddenly. She said she wanted to be a Bond girl before. I wonder if she still wants it tho…

ah-i agree with Dan on this issue and is too stupid to go farther. I am freaked out because that is what “the world ” thinks about this family–that they are the royal AMerican family and should demand the same respect. whaaaat?say it aint so Fio!

it is all the reality tv that has exploded and it just keeps getting more “tom-green” or that type of humor/entertainment of this generation. Sad really. and the new book out that everyone is reading “The Hunger?”(this the one? Dan did a movie a little bit different than this one tho)…yeah, its been done before. so, you youngins-ask your elders…have you seen this come to pass? yes, but now it is your turn and this doesnt impress me, nor bothers me, work it out, do what you want, see ya on the other side? well, come on elders, say, “no, this is just distasteful, use your money for education and to better yourself and the world, love each other, love dan in the van, stop removing womens’ love buttons, live equally, and imma jus sayin, yo”….

anyhoo–Dan aint gonna say any more on the subject-ask him, i bet he wont. (btw Dan, I didn’t know the placenta was shown! JHC-i couldnt look at MINE, let alone a reallity idiot! yikes. point taken–you are upset when they figure out they want to be left alone now, they made a misstake!too late, too much capital to make on them now.)

so, fio, back to my original statement—Bruce jenner is the dad of all these women who have their brains in their push-ups. That being said, that is why the older generation may be paying attention too. And maybe why this group is liked. AND their brother is well-liked on a diff reality show!! sooooo—i say, go Dan! once again–go DAN!!

another thing i have noticed, he has been hanging round people that he learns from? Harrison and him talked about love and to grab it and get married-why not he & calista did….. he is hanging around Ms. Woods and her baby–maybe she can throw some phermones his way. AND DAMN DAN–i am getting the GQ mag just cuz you look FABULOUS! Ms. woods did well again.
hi mendel–i am ok. i got out and walkd back looking for the buck-or parts of my car (mirror) and he was gone–this is a stupid move, cuz if he had brain damage–well, i have heard stories!! and glad to hear you did participate in the strike. excellent. so, any changes? if not, we have some good deals on abandoned tents in some prime city locations!!

come on Mendel–no matter what state you were in riding the tube–his presence next to you would oooooze and you would feel him before you even looked up. whew…hot in here?

anyhoo—this is funny. if you can get passed the psychobabbling of projection—-and this is what those “girls” are all about–everyone belittles them–every talk show they are on—they are tools. and now I am starting to feel sorry for them. someone should slap their momma!!
