Neil Patrick Harris: 'Truly Sorry' for Saying 'Tranny'

Neil Patrick Harris carries his adorable 13-month-old son, Gideon, on Friday (December 2) in New York City.

The 38-year-old How I Met Your Mother star, in town to guest co-host Live! With Kelly, hailed a cab with partner David Burtka, who held onto Gideon‘s twin sis, Harper.

“Truly sorry for saying the word ‘tranny’ on Live this week. Twice! Should have been more thoughtful. Didn’t at all mean to offend,” NPH tweeted the day before.

The remark came on Thursday’s show when Neil inhaled sulfur hexafluoride (“helium’s evil twin”) during a science segment that lowered his voice.

“Put the lotion in the basket,” NPH said after realizing he sounded like Silence of the Lambs‘ Buffalo Bill.

“I’ve never sounded more like a tranny in my life,” he later said after his voice returned to normal.

FYI: Harper is wearing 77kids Leopard Print Cord Jeggings.

Love them both and their adorable family.

The story is blown over all proportions about the word T****

We obviously need a dictionary for the words that are acceptable to use, and they obviously change from day to day.

Go NPH & David

call me crazy but..... @ 12/03/2011 at 2:55 pm

Sheesh! What’s wrong w using the word ‘tranny’? I use it all the darn time to describe Paris Hilton to friends. As in ‘Hey, yeah, she’s like a tranny w size 11 feet!’ Perfect description. Job done.

@Anna:
Pejorative. He drew laughs at the expense of a minority not well known with receiving respect in accord with their full humanity. His mea culpa was sincere.

Laughs at the expense at groups is OK where it is Republicans, Democrats, etc., that don’t have the long history of being so severely marginalized in the social contract and so often denied their basic human dignity.

As a gay man, he should realise that the only people that seem to be bothered by the word ‘tranny’ are the annoyingly politically correct people who, in fact, are not trannies themselves.

@Anna:

Really? How so?

Much to do about nothing.

@marq:

Thanks, I completely understand but how is it any different from a black people using the N word? You’d think a gay man would be allowed to use such words but I guess not.

@Anna: You do know that gay isn’t the same thing as a transsexual right? Do you think that it would be okay for lets say a latina person to use the n-word just because they’re a minority too?

(By the way I don’t think what he said was really a big deal…)

wait anna i’m black you better not be talking about the n word.

@tyra.b.lover: You’re not black. And btw, I don’t use the N word to refer to anyone and yes, i am black.

@tara:

Actually, in a lot of places it is ok for a Latina person to use the N word for that exact reason. It’s much more hurtful hearing the N word from a white person than a Latina. So maybe in this case it’s more hurtful to hear Neil use the word tranny because he’s gay and should have known better. No idea. All I know is that people are way too sensitive these days.

And it doesn’t even have to be a traditional minority:

I don’t get the criticism on this one. He used the word in the right context.

everyone is so f’in sensitive these days.
Really? There should be a guide to what people allowed to say.

@Anna: What are you? The ambassador for all black people or something? I’m black and I don’t care if you are Latina, White, Asian or even Black. I do not want anyone to use the N word. It’s equally bad to hear it from all of the above.

@A:

Socially it’s more acceptable to hear the N word from a latina than it is from a white person. Trust me, if a latina comedian said it on tv people would laugh but the minute a white comedian says the N word all hell breaks loose. It’s a sad truth, but it’s the truth nonetheless.

SO WHAT if he said tranny???????????????????

This politicallly correct nonsense is getting ridiculous! I’ll use whatever word I want [including the N word, the T word, the F word] and I don’t care who gets offended! SO THERE!

@Anna: What part of “I am black” do you not get? I am black! And I am telling you that it’s not ok. No one gets a pass, not even another black person. Like I said, the N word is bad no matter who says it. Latinas/Latinos do not get a pass! Most black people do not like it coming from anyone, let alone another black person. Do not let social media fool you. They do not represent the majority of us, not by far.

@josie: You’re such a bada*s. A legend in your own mind. Offending people is so “cool” and “progressive”.
Not really, it just makes you look like a dumba*s.

bobbyweiner @ 12/03/2011 at 6:39 pm

its slang not a slur. people are too sensitive…so if I say homo or hetero instead of homosexual and heterosexual…I’m using a slur? too funny can i still call a jewish person a jew?

@A:

I’m talking about the way it is in the world of entertainment. Also, who the hell said I wasn’t black? Please. I’m black as well.

I always think its hilarious when I hear black people say.. Oh I don’t like the N word.. I don’t care who it comes from… black, white, hispanic, asian whatever.. I don’t care. You do not use that word..

and then..

You hear them say Ooh look at that N*gg*.. he’s fine.. blah blah
and they are blasting rap music that blatantly uses the word all over it.

It’s a word. Get over it.

People that use that word just show how ignorant they are. Just like using any other SLUR racial or sexual in a bad way.. IT’S the same thing.. Just a word.

btw please leave out.. oh you are white comments you dont know blah blah.. because I’m mixed and a minority in many different ways..
and I have been called those things before..

You have the freedom of speech in this country which is also the freedom to say ignorant things and make you look like what you are.. or not..

And no… I still don’t like hearing any slurs.. but you have to look at the situation also.. I doubt this celebrity was using it in a mean way. He was making a joke.. about a movie..
