On writing the movie during downtime: “Some of the very darkest sections were probably conceived in Shiloh‘s art class; I was in the back corner, waiting for the kids to finish. And then somehow it slowly ended up being read by Brad, and then friends. There was a discussion of making it, and I just was terrified to hand it over to anybody. It wasn’t that I said, ‘I’m going to write something, and I want to direct it.’”
On putting herself in others’ shoes: “I obviously put myself in the position of what would have happened if I were in this situation. If I were in love with somebody and we happened to be from separate sides of the conflict but we were in love before the conflict started, how far would I be able to go? How much could I be open to, and when would I start to close off? Is it love, or is it survival?”

I am happy to know that In The Land of Blood & Honey is beginning to get attention. This is exactly what AJ is trying to accomplish why she decided to make ITLBH, to create discussion & debates. Sure, initially the inception of this is out of her frustration which she put into writing then eventually she produced & directed it. Her main purpose is to impart INFORMATION….to educate the public on what really happened in that particular part of the world. She wanted to show how war can affect relationships. She wanted the international community to take part in helping the people who were affected. Also, she wanted the public to be AWARE that this is part of history and that there are lessons to be learned….that hopefully this same situation can be avoided to happen in the future.

I would like to believe that ENTERTAINMENT VALUE is never AJ’s agenda. Considering the very heavy subject matter, she knows it’s difficult to entertain people. Her main intent is for the public to understand what the film is trying to say…what’s its message. Critical or commercial success are the least of her concerns. The important thing is to MAKE THE PEOPLE THINK & LET THOSE WHO ARE CONCERNED TO DO SOME ACTIONS.

For this alone, I am proud to be a fan of someone who uses her power & influence through film to impart a message that matters.
