'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' Tops Box Office

Jude Law and Robert Downey, Jr.‘s latest film, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows took the top spot at the box office this weekend, bringing in an estimated $40 million in ticket sales.

Second place went to Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, which took in an estimated $23.5 million.

Variety reports that despite their box office totals, both films grossed less than the original films in their respective franchises.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol also brought in an impressive $13 million during a limited release – the film will open nationwide on December 21.

Below is Jude on Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update, where he took part in a segment called “Get in the Cage” with Nicolas Cage (played by Andy Samberg).

that’s because a lot students right now have Finals so a lot less. last year the movie came out right after finals and all the students wanted to go relax and watch a movie. I’m just saying that that is one demographic that did not go out this weekend to a watch a movie.

@marie: I was just about to post the same thing. The first film opened on Christmas Day so it’s understandable that it made more on it’s first weekend. It seems like all this hoopla over the box office numbers is nothing but a lot of wind blowing and writers jumping the gun on a non-story.
We saw the movie on Friday and loved it.

We saw Sherlock Holmes yesterday, and I’m planning to see it again sometime this week. Jude’s a perfect Watson.
Also, I loved his SNL skit from last night.

LOL at the fan club posting here giving excuses as to why the movie did far lower than the studio projections. Truth is the film isn’t as good as the first. Even Mission Impossible exceeded Sherlock in per screen average. Sherlock was expensive to make, it should’ve made a lot more this weekend given the amount of theaters it opened at.
